The holidays are my favorite time of the year: family gatherings, home cooking and a time of reflection on the year. This issue brings you all the warmth of the holidays with two recipes from our cookbooks that will make your mouth water. Don’t forget that our gorgeous cookbooks make a great Christmas gift for a friend or family member. Keep flipping through the issue to find the continuation of our look into the past of The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. As we continue to reflect on the past 80 years of JLSB, this issue looks at the history and our leadership between 1952 and 1972. Then we look to the future as we prepare for our community celebration in February with the tree planting project on Clyde Fant Parkway. At this joyous time of year, you are all busy celebrating the rituals or traditions that you and your family have shared year after year. These traditions are comfortable and festive.

Maybe it’s hanging a favorite ornament on the Christmas tree, or unpacking an heirloom, or enjoying a favorite holiday dessert prepared from the same recipe that was passed down through the generations. Repeating the same treasured traditions makes the holidays even more meaningful and bonds us with family and friends who share them.

Sometimes, the holidays give us the gift of a little breathing room—time to step out of our daily routines and think of the bigger picture.

We begin to imagine new adventures for the year ahead and gear up mentally for new challenges.

We are inspired to set new goals and seek ways to stretch and strengthen our abilities.

For all of us involved in the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier, we find ourselves at a similar place this holiday season: valuing our past and looking ahead. We uphold our treasured traditions and reaffirm the values that have made the Junior League an organization that has made a lasting impact on the Shreveport-Bossier Community.

At the same time, we’re all looking ahead to transforming and positioning this organization for a bright and strong second eighty years.

This holiday season, many great things lie ahead for the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier.

We look forward to the unveiling of our 80th Anniversary Project—our gift to the Community and to our future. I hope that our tree planting project

will be an heirloom for our community and for our organization. I want to thank all of you who have already sponsored a tree to support our 80th Anniversary Project and if you haven’t had the chance to do so, there is still time.

We are also continuing the tradition of embracing the mission of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier—to promote voluntarism through our 80x80 Challenge; to develop the potential of women through training and educational opportunities; to improve our communities through our many community projects that meet the current critical needs.

But here’s a tradition I feel honored to repeat: As we do every year, this is the time when we thank you, our members, for all that you do. Your time, your dedication and your caring spirit make the Junior League of Shreveport Bossier such a wonderful organization. Your passion is resonating with those we serve; it is changing lives for the better; and it is helping to make our Community a better place to live.

In the June 1957 Shreveport Junior League publication “The Newssheet,” an article entitled “Protection from Fallout” discusses the four means of defending against fallout of an H-Bomb (or hydrogen bomb): evacuation, shelter, decontamination and education and training.

KTBS-TV, was at first a NBC affiliate, went on the air in September 3, 1955.

In 1961, KTBS became an ABC affiliate.

The R.W. Norton Art Gallery (Richard William Norton, Sr.) began being built in Shreveport in 1959. It was finished in 1961 and opened to the public in 1966.

In the 1950s, the Cold War was a concern for Americans, including Shreveport residents. Some JLS members volunteered at the Shreveport Filter Center, an aircraft warning center. According to the Federal Civil Defense Administration Annual Statistical Report of 1956, “It is accepted that the USSR has the capability of attacking any target within the United States or its possessions.” Shreveport and Baton Rouge were seen as target areas while New Orleans was a critical target area.

The Shreveport Filter Center ceased operations on January 31, 1960.

The first JLS Rummage Sale was on held in September of 1959 at the Agriculture Building at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds in Shreveport. Revenue for the Rummage Sale that year was $12,389.57. Each member was “responsible for $40.00 worth of rummage.”

Over 12,000 customers attended the sale.

A committee for the cookbook A Cook’s Tour was formed in January 1963. Each active member was required to submit a minimum of three recipes. Each recipe was tested. Lynda Perry won the contest to name the cookbook A Cook’s Tour. In 1964, each cookbook was sold for $3.50 with a shipping and handling cost of .25¢.

In 1967, the JLS changed the name and format of the newsletter from “Newssheet” to “Parishscope.” Betty Clay wrote in the 1967-1968 Annual Report: “We changed the name. We changed the format. We changed the advertising. We changed the content. We even changed the budget.

Sust ainer Spotlight Betty Ann Caldwell Morgan Burke I was born, May 4, 1923 (yes that makes me 89 years young), in Shreveport, LA and have lived here all my life with two exceptions: 1. At age nine, we moved to Dallas for Daddy’s job with the railroad industry; but he HATED it so we moved back in less than a year. 2. When I married, I moved to his hometown of Keatchie where we lived the farm life. Now I reside in South Highlands with my grandson, his wife and child.

My education began in a private school here, on the corner of Highland and Wyndotte Street, called Pleasant Hall. This school has long been gone, just as Mrs. Pleasant herself. A. C. Steere was right down the street from my family home on Ockley Drive which was convenient for the remainder of my elementary years from fourth grade going. My fondest memories of early education come from C. E. Byrd High School; both Polly and Justin followed there. My college career began at Centenary, and then I finished my degree in English Literature with a minor in Trigonometry at Tulane University of Louisiana at H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College.

In 1948 I married John Young Morgan, an attorney from Keatchie, Louisiana. We were blessed with a lovely daughter, Polly Decker Morgan, in 1951. John passed away from cancer in 1960.

Polly and I moved back to Shreveport and later in 1969 I re-married to Milton Pope Burke III. Sadly, he passed away in 2003.

Polly Decker Morgan (1951-1992) gave me a precious grandson, Justin Caldwell Owen in 1980.

Justin married Ella Vories Bridges (the assistant editor of the Parishscope this year) five years ago and they now have a two-and-a-half year old son (my great-grandson), Shepherd ‘Shep’ Caldwell Owen. Shep was named after my sweet daddy, Samuel ‘Sam’ Shepherd Caldwell. I am so thankful to have them in my life.

You asked if I would like to see my family, specifically my granddaughter-in-law, continue to serve the community through the League or other ways. I’m very proud of my granddaughter-in-law for her involvement in the Junior League and

the community, but frankly I don’t care what she chooses. Whatever she wants to do, that’s not my business.

I suppose most people don’t know my passion for dogs. I’ve always had a dog. When I lived in Keatchie, people would just drop dogs off in the country (cruel), so I at one time had NINE dogs.

My beloved dog Pedro is a Chiweenie. He was already named when I adopted him from the Caddo Animal Shelter. My biggest pet peeve would have to be people who don’t like dogs.

What are my hobbies/interests? Television!

I love television...any and all shows. I remember loving the radio before we had TVs. During my active Junior League days, my favorite hobbies included going to The Strand anytime the doors were open! My favorite movie of all time is Gone With The Wind. “Frankly my darling...” Clark Gable was the best looking thing!

My daddy, Sam S. Caldwell, was the most influential person in my life; he enforced in me to “always speak the truth even if it hurt.” He was mayor of Shreveport for three consecutive terms, 1934-1946. He was known for his honesty. He campaigned against Jimmy Davis during the 1944 Louisiana governor’s race.

I hated politics simply because I didn’t like anyone to say anything bad about my daddy.

During my high school years, my favorite way to spend my days were working as my daddy’s secretary a few days a week while he was mayor. The old City Hall is no longer there. Most of you probably aren’t even aware there was an “Old” City Hall. It is now an empty parking lot down the way from The Strand.

I joined the League in the early 1940s and the “placement” (though I don’t remember them being called that) I’m most fond of was being a chauffeur.

Back then a great deal of people didn’t own a car and if they did gas was rationed, due to the war, so my family having a car (or two) and with Daddy being mayor (somehow that meant he was allowed more gasoline?) my job was to help the community in taking people where they needed. Examples include the grocery store, hardware store, etc.

I have noticed a definite change in the diversity of the League in these past 80 years, but my most favorite part of the Junior League’s 80 years in Shreveport-Bossier is that we are steady in our mission to promote women in the community. It’s been such an honor to be part of the Junior League ShreveportBossier for the past 70+ years that I was even asked to be a member. My hope for the League is another 80 wonderful years giving to our community in ways we don’t even foresee as a need yet.

Wow! We had an incredible Fall!

The turnout for the Sustainer Open House was great; attendees picked up their yearbooks, purchased cookbooks and caught up with friends.

This year, the Junior League’s historian attended and brought along scrapbooks that date all the way back to 1933! We had a great time looking at the League through the years; the fashions have certainly changed! Did you know at one time the Junior League “apron” was actually a dress?

November was just as busy! A group of Sustainers attended The Junior League of Tyler’s Mistletoe and Magic Market. We had brunch, shopped the market and purchased perfect Christmas gifts. Also during November, we held the Past President’s luncheon, an event I look forward to every year. It gives us “oldies” a chance to discover all the wonderful projects our League is working on.

After an eventful fall, I look forward to the

holiday events! The Junior League of ShreveportBossier’s Annual Christmas Party will be held December 11 at the Uptown Shopping Center in Shreveport. We will start at Ristorante Giuseppe and then make our way through the shops. Be sure to keep an eye out for your invitation in the mail.

In January, we will have a chance to view Titanic: The Artifact Exhibit at Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center. We will meet January 15 at the museum where there will be free parking and a box lunch. We will make our way through the exhibit just before it sets sail out of Shreveport.

Don’t forget to begin thinking about an outstanding Junior League Sustainer that deserves Sustainer of the Year. Nominations are due February 1!

Ready to

The Community Foundation’s “Ready to Read!” project offers League members an opportunity to promote literacy. “Ready to Read” focuses on children who are in Head Start who promote into Title 1 AU elementary schools, with a goal to improve the percentage of 3rd graders reading at basic and above grade level to 95% in six years.

Three times a year (December 3-7; February 25-March 1, and May 6-10), a community volunteer will read to each K5 class room. Children will be given their very own book to follow along with the reader and then will take the book home to start their own library.

This year’s provisional class has had a busy Fall with educational meetings and volunteer work at various projects in our community. At the Fall meetings at LSU Shreveport and Sutton’s Community Center, provisional members learned the many aspects of the membership and community councils. Many of our Provisionals have already completed their community placements. Some volunteered at Super Safety Saturday, Art-

ist for a Day at the Red River Revel and Kids in the Kitchen, also at the Revel. Others have participated in projects such as Bingo at LSUHSC Children’s Hospital and Between the Lines, which is the Junior League’s new project for 2012-2013. Some of our provisional members have participated in Fall Done in a Day events and others will volunteer with Spring projects. It has been a great Fall and we are looking forward to an even better Spring full of fun, new friends and volunteer service.

Although we are fast approaching the holiday season and it seems that Spring is so very far away, your Market Committee has been working hard since this summer to plan for the Junior League Market: Shopping for a Cause 2013! While many of the details are still being finalized, here’s a quick “sneak peek” on what’s to come…

This Spring, Market shopping will be open on Thursday, March 7 through Saturday, March 9.

We are excited to be bringing Market across the river to the Shreveport Convention Center this year, allowing space for more merchants, more shoppers and more funds that will benefit our many projects and programs. With room for more than 140 booths, we will reprise many of your most beloved merchants and will be adding some fun new vendors to the mix as well!

To kick off Market season, we will be hosting the Second Annual Junior League of Shreve-

port-Bossier: Running For a Cause – 5k & 1/2-Mile Family Fun Run on Saturday, February 16 at 8:00 am at Independence Stadium. This fun-for-the-family event will provide a great way to break out of the Winter blues and support a good cause—your very own League! Traveling a course that will conclude on the football field inside the stadium, the 5k will end with an afterparty serving up live music, food, beverages and entertainment for the kids!

Once again, the Sustainer of the Year Breakfast will be held on the Friday of Market at 9:00 am at the Shreveport Convention Center and will provide Sustainers with preferred shopping before the Market opens at 10:00 am.

For our most popular annual event, Girls Night Out, the “Sweet Southern Shoppin’” will begin at 6:00 pm on Thursday and will feature great music, delicious drinks, hors d’oeuvres,

desserts and opening day shopping at Market. As always, we will have door prizes, exceptional raffle items and good times with good friends. This is not a night to be missed!

To honor our Patrons and Sponsors, the “Belles and Beauxs” Patron Party will take place Friday night starting at 7:00 pm. This year, we are excited to throw a Southern-themed soiree where Southern cocktail attire will be a must for the ladies and seersucker suits and bow ties will be encouraged for the gentlemen. The silent auction is shaping up to be full of must-have items and will be easy to find under the lights of the center courtyard. The music and merriment will flow from the very center of Market, surrounded by Merchant booths, allowing for convenient socializing and shopping all in one room.

Breakfast with the Bunnies was so successful

last year we decided to bring it back. This extraspecial event provides a chance for you to bring the kids to have breakfast and take spring pictures with some very special furry friends! You will have the opportunity to have your children’s pictures taken and then shop the Market while you are there. Come on by for the breakfast at 9:00 am on Saturday.

Violence

By Melanie Wise JLSB has a strategic goal to “be a leading force in the betterment of our community, primarily through projects that enhance the lives of women and children.” The new JLSB Domestic Violence Education placement encompasses the spirit of this strategic goal in a concrete and powerful way.

Domestic violence is a silent epidemic that impacts every demographic of this community. We all know that domestic violence is devastating to the women who are the victims, but it is equally detrimental to their children. Children who witness domestic violence experience difficulties in their development. Worse yet, they often carry with them a horrible lesson taught to them by the abuser in their family: that it is normal to use coercive power and violence as a way to influence the ones you love.* This perpetuates the cycle of violence because statistics show that boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to repeat the behavior with their own domestic partner.

This cycle must stop.

JLSB has partnered with the Providence House to be a leading force in educating our community about the wide range of services offered to assist victims of

domestic violence. The Providence House provides a safe and secure emergency shelter to women who flee their abusive partners. While at the safe house women have access to counseling services, job and housing assistance and legal advocacy. However, the Providence House’s mission to end domestic violence extends beyond the walls of the safe house. Staff is available to assist victims in developing an individualized “safety plan” to implement when they are leaving their abusive spouse or partner. They also offer assistance in filing temporary restraining orders. JLSB members will host educational meetings throughout our community to get the word out about the wide range of services offered by the Providence House.

We currently have plans to present educational workshops to churches, professional organizations and community groups.

This placement will have a positive impact on the lives of women and children throughout our community. I am so proud of the JLSB for taking on this important issue, and I am proud of the members of this placement who are working hard to make sure that this program will be a successful endeavor for many years to come.

Domestic Violence is serious and life threatening business. It can turn deadly quick. Recently a man held his wife captive in her car, shot and killed her and then was killed by the police as he was confronted. It seemed to some like it came from nowhere...but it didn’t—not for her and not for the many people who witnessed the signs. Everyone believed it couldn’t happen to her or anyone they might know.

What is Domestic Violence? Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other. Partners may be married or not married; heterosexual, gay or lesbian; living together, separated or dating. It is a crime that can include physical abuse, emotional abuse, economic abuse and sexual abuse.

How can I identify Domestic Violence?

Does he or she……

• Embarrass you with bad names and put-downs?

• Look at you or act in ways that scare you?

• Stop you from seeing or talking to friends or family?

• Take your money, make you ask for money or refuse to give you money?

• Make all the decisions?

• Tell you you’re a bad parent or threaten to take away or hurt your children?

• Act like the abuse is not a big deal, is your fault or even deny doing it?

• Destroy your property or threaten to kill your pets?

• Intimidate you with guns, knives or other weapons?

• Shove you, slap you or hit you?

• Force you to drop charges?

• Threaten to commit suicide?

• Threaten to kill you?

If you recognize even one of these you may be in an abusive relationship.

What can you do? Safety planning is essential whether you stay or leave. If you seek help from an attorney or courts for a Temporary Restraining Order, make sure a safety plan is included. Both are necessary to protect you legally and physically.

Call the 24-hour anonymous and confidential Domestic Violence Hotline, 318-226-5015, if you:

• Are scared and need advice

• Want to create a Safety Plan for yourself or someone else

• Want to do a Temporary Restraining Order

• Want to know how to help a friend, relative or someone you know

• Want to join a support group for those not in the Safe House

• Need immediate safety and shelter

• Want to report an incident or what you have seen, heard or suspect, we will contact the authorities

Why doesn’t she just leave? Statistics tell us that it takes a woman leaving seven times before she leaves for good. Most women and their children who choose not to leave don’t have the financial resources, the support of others due to isolation or the emotional strength. They are utterly afraid of their abuser and what could happen to them, their children, their families and their pets. We have seen this play out on the nightly news in our own community—which serves to make leaving even more fearful.

But there is hope. Providence House offers a safe place in an undisclosed location and a program of support for women. This program includes opportunities for women to choose their own path in life, improve their job skills or earning capacity and move to safe, affordable housing.

We know one thing at Providence House: If a woman chooses to have a relationship it should be out of a position of strength, not weakness. This, in most cases, gives her the option to choose what is best for her and her children.

Day in a

Welcome to Done In A Day, where making a difference intersects with providing a quick response to a short-term project. The DIAD team assists our community partners and other organizations through hands-on activities. In most cases, the project is a one day or weekend effort. DIAD allows our members who have obligations—whether work or family—the ability to find time in their hectic schedules to give back.

This year we have two DIAD project sessions, Fall 2012 and Spring 2013. This allows the League to double their DIAD volunteer efforts. We also have received additional volunteer assistance from some of our Provisionals. This is a great opportunity to collaborate seasoned volunteers with our newest members.

DIAD supports local community events that might not otherwise have the support needed to accomplish their goals. Examples of Done In A Day projects include The Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission, serving the homeless with a smile and a hot meal during lunch and dinner; The Shriner’s 90th Anniversary, assisting with the needs of the event and demonstrating children games and face painting; Barksdale Air Force Base—Operation Hero, a mock deployment for the children whose parent(s) will be deployed over the next 90 days; Northwest LA Food Bank, package food items to help fight hunger in our community; The Red River Revel Arts Festival, our DIAD members will assist where needed; Salvation Army Angel Tree will be held in the month of December, several of our DIAD members will assist in this amazing worthwhile cause.

Interesting trivia about you: I grew up on a small horse farm and competed in three-day eventing. My biggest event was the US Pony Club National Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. My competition horse was Valentino, a.k.a. Fudgie.

What have you enjoyed most from being a JLSB member?: I have loved meeting and working with other passionate women. They have encouraged and inspired me to be a better leader, citizen and person. The opportunities to serve my community have been rich and have left me so fulfilled.

What has been your favorite league placement thus far?: Watching Super Safety Saturday go from an idea to a project that just finished its third year has been wonderful.

I’m so very proud of everyone who has had a hand in its success.

What are you most thankful for?: I am most thankful for my support team—my amazing husband; my wise Mom; a God-send of a Mother-in-Law; the best, most loving friends a girl could ask for and five little cheerleaders who think I’m “Super Woman.” Without all of them, I couldn’t do all that I do.

Cookbook Peppermint Twist Serves 12

2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs 1/2 cup melted butter 3/4 cup butter 3 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar 5 eggs, slightly beaten 4 1/2 squares melted chocolate 1 1/2 cups whipping cream, sweetened & whipped dash of vanilla 1 (8 ounce) package tiny marshmallows 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy Mix first two ingredients and press into 13”x8”x2” dish. Cream butter and sugar, add beaten eggs and chocolate and beat well. Spoon over crumbs and set in freezer while whipping cream. Whip cream with a little confectioners’ sugar and a dash of vanilla.

Fold marshmallows into whipping cream and spread over chocolate. Crush peppermint candy with a rolling pin and sprinkle over whipped cream/marshmallow mixture. Place in freezer uncovered and when frozen, remove and cover with plastic wrap or foil. Return to freezer. Thirty minutes before serving, transfer it from freezer to refrigerator.

Peppermint Punch Serves 16

1 pint peppermint ice cream 2 cups dairy eggnog 1 (12 ounce) can club soda, chilled red food coloring 1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped 1/3 cup crushed peppermint candy 16 peppermint sticks Place the ice cream in a chilled punch bowl.

Stir in the eggnog and club soda. Tint as desired with red food coloring. Spread the whipped cream over the surface of the punch and sprinkle with crushed peppermint.

Garnish each serving with a peppermint stick.

Elba Hamilton

The Nominating Committee has slated Elba Hamilton as the president-elect-elect. She will serve as President of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier in 2014-2015.

The nomination was approved by the 2012-2013 Board of Directors. Active members confirmed the nomination at the November general meetings.
