What a year to be your Editor of the Parishscope for JLSB! I have enjoyed every minute of this 80th year, writing and researching every aspect and project of the League. What better way to learn about all of the opportunities the League offers its members! And to top it all, a tremendously successful tree planting project that will be cherished by our community for decades to come. Also this year, I was honored to attend the Organizational Development Institute with three other amazing members of the League. We exchanged ideas with other Leagues from across the country. It was such an eye-opening experience to hear what other projects are being developed in Leagues.

I hope you enjoy this final installment of the Parishscope for this season.

You’ll get a chance to know your 20132014 Board and also final thoughts from the newest sustainers. We wrap up our community projects and even have a date set for Super Safety Saturday for this fall!

It is hard to believe that it has been a year since I wrote my first article as the incoming President of the Junior League of Shreveport -Bossier.

In that article, three goals for 2012-2013 were set and it also reflected on the women who in 1930 formed the Junior Service League, which became the Junior League of Shreveport in 1933. I am proud to report the results of our year were remarkable. Continuing in the tradition set by those who paved the trail before us, we have directly served Shreveport-Bossier through our community projects that include Between the Lines, Bingo at LSU-Health Science Center, Health Literacy Initiatives: Kids in the Kitchen Revel, Health Literacy Summer Camp, Kids in the Kitchen-Spring, Super Safety Saturday at Sheriff’s Safety Town, Domestic Violence Education and Prevention, Artist for a Day at the Revel and Done in a Day. I am also pleased to announce that we had a very successful year with our fund-raisers: Pepsi sales at the Revel; sales of Mardi Gras to Mistletoe, Revel, A Cooks Tour cookbooks and Junior League Spring Market – Shopping for a Cause. Goal one was to make certain that our members not only knew our mission, but also understood how we implement the mission in every project, fundraiser, program, training and placement the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier produces. Through the community projects and fund-raisers, members were able to see how their hard work and commitment exemplifies our mission to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve our community.

In order to honor the 80th Anniversary of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier, goals two and three were set: Celebrate our 80th Year and ensure the viability of the Junior League of

Shreveport-Bossier for another 80 years. In this edition of the Parishscope, you will see a list of those who committed to the 80 x 80 challenge, where members gave an additional $80 to the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier and 80 hours of community service to the Shreveport-Bossier area.

You will also see a list of contributors who selflessly gave to our 80th Anniversary Project. This project planted 80 trees along Clyde Fant Parkway that signify the 80-year milestone in the history of Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. This project was able to raise funds for a restricted account and will make a lasting impact on our community that will be enjoyed for generations. Wow! What an impressive year and it could not have happened without the hard work and generosity of our members, partners and sponsors!

Throughout this year we have reflected on the past and the traditions of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. For 80 years, women in our community have been forming this incredible legacy started by our founders which created traditions continued by our members. Tradition is defined as an “inherited, established pattern of action or behavior and the handing down of customs from one generation to another.” A longheld tradition is each June, we begin again and our leadership turns over with a new President, Board of Directors, new Committee Chairs and Head Volunteers. In this issue you will meet the ladies who will be leading us as we head into our next 80 years. Our mission challenges us to move forward and build on the work of the volunteers who precede us. This is what has made us so unique over the last 80 years!

Over this last year, I have often quoted Nelson Henderson who said, “The true meaning

of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” So through the tradition and legacy, our members, together with our partners and sponsors, have planted trees that will provide shade for generations to come. The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier continues to impact our community 80 years later.

It has been an honor and privilege to serve the members and the community through my service in the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier.

This year has been especially rewarding and I appreciate the opportunity that membership gave me to serve as the President of this incredible

organization comprised of remarkable women in our community. I have had the time of my life and I am eternally grateful to Maureen Gamble, who served as our sustainer advisor, the women who served on the 2012-2013 Board of Directors and all of the thoughtful, committed women who make up the membership of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. Thanks for giving your time, talents and treasures to this place we call home!

Building Better Communities

The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is an organization through which talented, intelligent and diverse women truly achieve the goal of Building Better Communities. No one would argue that we have had a tremendous positive effect on our community during our first 80 years.

Something that I have considered in planning for the upcoming year is that we in the Junior League do build better communities—Inside and Out. Yes, we have started a multitude of projects over the years that have made our community a better place, but an often overlooked benefit of our organization is the internal community that is formed and enriched. As we enter our 81st year, it is important to realize that we are charged with serving not only the community outside the confines of our headquarters, but also building community among League members, sustainers and provisionals. Building that internal community means challenging one another to grow, encouraging our members to actively participate in training opportunities, getting to know one another and building one another up in all that we do. By building a stronger internal community, there is no limit to what we can accomplish collectively.

Promoting Voluntarism “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” – Winston Churchill Volunteering is something that everyone in our organization is currently doing in some way.

Whether it is in a community project or service within League fund-raisers or in a leadership role, we are all volunteers. It is the thread that binds us all together—our desire to give back in ways large and small. As you participate in your volunteer work this year, keep in mind that every job within our League is important. Every job offers an opportunity for growth, for meeting new friends and for setting an example for those around us. I love when Russell, William and Henry ask what I do at the Junior League…they get it confused with Little League! But, even at their young ages, they understand that volunteering is important to me and that it is simply something we all should do.

We talked a lot about “planting seeds” during our 80th Anniversary Celebration. Let’s continue to plant seeds of voluntarism as we move into our 81st year.

At times you may feel that to the world you are one person, but remember to one person you may be the world. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. Your volunteer service does make a difference in the lives of others and your own.

Developing the Potential of Women “Everyone needs to be valued. Everyone has the potential to give something back.” – Princess Diana The second facet of our mission is promoting the potential of women—note that it doesn’t say “members,” but “women”…all women. In order to move forward this portion of our mission, we must embrace the importance of all women in our community. We must be willing to meet them where they are, give them what they need and gratefully accept what they can give. We must enthusiastically support one another knowing that by making each woman the best they can be, we cannot help but improve our community. When we are our best selves we will be able to give back to one another, our families and our community.

I encourage you to take advantage of every training or education opportunity the League has to offer. Embrace your placement for the year as an opportunity to develop a new skill—step outside of what is comfortable for you. In my ten years in the League, I have found that my most fulfilling placements have been the ones that I felt least prepared to perform. I attribute my preparation to serve as President of this amazing organization to the mentoring and encouragement of other League members and knowledge attained from my diverse and sometimes challenging placements.

It is important that we all understand how each project, volunteer position and fund-raiser fit not only into our Mission, but also our Focus Area of serving women and children at risk. Our goal each year is to have a meaningful impact in our community—inside and out. I am a part of this organization because I believe I am a better person because of it. I am overwhelmed and amazed at the talent, commitment and leadership within our League. Our members, sustainers, provisionals and community partners continue to create an environment where we can constantly learn and where opportunities to improve our community abound.

As we begin a new year, plan to be involved.

Make it a point to get to know others within the League. Have fun with your placement. Get to know your advisor and communicate regularly with her. Connect with a provisional or a sustainer and serve as a mentor or a mentee. Think about why you are a member of the League and share your experience with others. Your Board of Directors is an exceptional group of women full of energy and commitment to making this a better organization. I am honored to get to work with them. We collectively believe that in order to lead effectively, we must first serve those we are charged to lead. You are all extremely busy and yet you choose to spend your valuable time participating in League activities and for that we thank you. We look forward to serving you this year as we Build Better Communities—Inside and Out!

Nominating Chairman Family: I am married to Daniel Baker. We celebrate our third wedding anniversary on May 1! We have not yet started a family but have our hands full with our handsome Australian Shepherd, Wally, and our two temperamental felines, Jeanne Marie and Skittles Louise.

Fun Facts: I love reading, shopping, outdoor projects, watching pretty much any show on BRAVO or E!, taking Wally for walks in our neighborhood, entertaining old friends and new, traveling, etc. I really enjoy watching golf and attending golf tournaments‌and might even start playing (much to my husband’s chagrin).

What you hope to contribute this year: I think it is important to be a valuable member of an organization. However, in order to add value to an organization, one must understand how that organization is run to fully maximize the benefits of the organization and to ensure the growth and betterment of the organization. As a member of the Board, I hope to gain a better understanding of how the League runs and what ways we can work to improve the League.

I also hope to meet lots of interesting and motivated women who share my same ambition for future improvement of the League.

Fun Facts: I love summer...the pool, the beach, the smell of sunscreen. I enjoy jogging and one day hope to tackle my first half marathon. I stay busy chasing after my girls, juggling my volunteer commitments and trying to cook dinner

Fun Facts: I love reading sci-fi or urban fantasy books. I also love running, even though the only exercise I seem to be getting these days is running after my 2 year old.

What you hope to contribute this year: I hope to contribute a positive attitude and welcoming personality. In my first few years in the League, I always knew the least about W&M Council. I don’t want members to hesitate to ask me for any information about our fund-raisers or members’ financial responsibilities!

During the 1990s, JLSB worked to make Sci-Port a reality in Shreveport. The initial idea came from an exhibit at the 1986 Red River Revel Exploratorium called Fossil Dig. The public loved the exhibit and interest in a hands-on science center grew. The governing body, the Exploratorium, was formed and brought two traveling exhibits, The Gateway to China and Dinomation Dinosaurs, to Shreveport. In 1991, JLSB members presented to the Shreveport City Council and the Louisiana State Legislature and received $14.5 million dollars to fund a permanent hands-on science center. A temporary science center located at 528 Commerce Street was opened in January 1994. JLSB donated $60,000 in honor of the JLSB 60th anniversary in 1993 to Sci-Port for the Kidspace Area. In addition to the JLSB donation, $40,000 was received from a National Science Foundation grant. JLSB members also volunteered time to Sci-Port. A new permanent 67,000 square-foot science center was opened on November 21, 1998. The Space Center, a 25,000 square foot expansion, featuring astronomy and space science exhibits and a Space Dome Planetarium, opened November 18, 2006.

In the 1990s, gang violence was a problem in Shreveport and JLSB took action. Guided by Shreveport Juvenile Justice, the JLSB produced a video in 1995 called Shreveport Gangs…A Brutal Reality. Male and female gang members were interviewed as well as Caddo Coroner Dr. George McCormick; Dr. Ernest Block, Chief of Trauma at LSU Medical Center; Shreveport Police Chief Steve Prator; and Bill Jolly, a probation officer for Caddo Parish Juvenile Court. Lori Baynham was the JL chairman and worked to bring awareness to the video through workshops and approximately 100 community viewings presented to 20,000–30,000 people. It was shown at the 74th Conference of the Association of Junior Leagues International in Phoenix, Arizona and was recognized for a Gold Addy® Award for Public Services by the Shreveport-Bossier Advertising Federation.

JLSB members helped at emergency shelters, and staffed the Disaster Relief Relay Center (located at the former South Park Mall) and the Humane Society. What a wonderful year I have had as the Sustainer Advisor for Shelly. I have made many new (and much younger) friends, had an opportunity to visit some friends that I haven’t seen in some time and relearn all the wonderful things that our League does to serve our community.

Betty’s selflessness is epitomized in a story shared by a fellow sustainer: She adopted a family of seven from Liberia by way of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, logging countless miles finding jobs, housing, legal and government assistance and medical care for them for three years before driving them to their new home in Amarillo, Texas.

Favorite Placement: There have been so many! Probably my favorite was the first time I ever did Kids in the Kitchen. I rapped about fruits and vegetables in front of a bunch of elementary kids...all I ever need is a little beatbox!

Favorite League Memory: This year’s Board of Directors has been the best! I have truly enjoyed serving with such an amazing group of ladies this year! What a great way to go out! I’d like to take ballroom dancing, learn to play the ukulele, play some Frisbee golf, play lots more tennis… and I’m sure I’ll continue to volunteer. I’d like to take what I’ve learned as an active member of Junior League and share it with other organizations. Thank you Junior League for all you have done for me! Favorite League Memory: At my provisional retreat, the facility forgot to open the gate for us so we had to climb a 6’ fence to the ropes course. What a sight it was to see 80 ladies climbing a fence! It was definitely a bonding experience.

What will you do with your free time?: Free time...what is that?! Being a mommy and an active member in my church will keep me busy!

As the 2012-13 provisional year draws to a close, I am struck by how fast a year goes by. It seems like it was only yesterday when I began planning for this year, not yet the Provisional Chairman. I was excited about the possibilities of educating and training new women to be the volunteers and future leaders of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier.

It was my placement, a job, but throughout the year, due to the wonderful provisionals and provisional directors, it became so much more.

From the reception at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum to the high ropes course at Camp Forbing to the May Dinner meeting where the provisionals become new members, it has a been a wonderful ride, complete with laughter, new friendships, hard work and lots of fun. Memories have been made that will last a lifetime.

By taking time out of their busy lives, our new members have not only made a difference within the Junior League but in the community as well. It has been a wonderful privilege to have worked with such an extraordinary group of women who will go on to do great things within our organization and in our community.

With temperatures fast approaching triple digits, the provisional year is ending, and in the words of Dr. Seuss, “Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.” Thank you, provisionals and provisional directors, for a wonderful year and all the memories we made!

Favorite league memory: This year has been fun, but the moment which touched me the most occurred when working the Cinderella Project. My “client,” a student at Fair Park High School, found the perfect dress for her prom after trying on nearly a dozen dresses. She looked so beautiful. I brought her to the next station, and she gave me a hug and whispered thank you.

She was truly grateful for the opportunity and I was just as grateful to help her.

League Day at the

League Day at the Capitol was hosted by Louisiana Junior Leagues on Tuesday, March 30. Seven members of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier made the trip to Baton Rouge to educate our Legislators about the mission, projects and impact of Leagues across the state. While the legislature was in session, Junior League members were recognized by both the Senate and House of Representatives and Tuesday, March 30, 2013 was declared Junior League of Louisiana Day via a Proclamation read and recorded in the House Chamber. We will proudly display this joint proclamation at headquarters. Members who attended were treated to lunch in the Senate dining room by Senator Barrow Peacock and then toured the Capitol building including a stop in the Governor’s office, the Senate and House Chambers, the rooftop and the back

hallway where Huey P. Long was shot. We were able to see both legislative bodies at work and the legislators and staff we met were so very appreciative of the work of the Junior League. Wrapping up the day, the Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Covington and Shreveport Leagues hosted a reception for league members and legislators at the Governor’s Mansion. Even those of us who had been to the Capitol many times learned something new—what a wonderful way to celebrate the 201st birthday of the State of Louisiana!

Members who attended were: Molly McInnis, Danielle Brown, Jennifer Landman, Stephanie Pringle, Kristen Gary, Sarah Brooks and Melanie Peacock.

We certainly enjoyed a fun and educational day of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities.

Hobbies: Baking and spending time with friends and family.

Favorite book and why: Mississippi in Africa, because I’m a history dork (can I say dork?) and this book intertwines my love of law, politics and fascination with cause and effect; how the smallest of things can have the greatest impact.

Favorite movie and why: This is a hard one, having worked in a video store I have so many. Five that come to mind would be “Little Miss Sunshine,” “The Usual Suspects,” “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Just Cause,” and “The Pianist.”

Favorite placement and why: I would have to say my upcoming placement. Next year I will be Education Assistant Chairperson, which is a two-year placement. So it will give me an opportunity learn and assist the current Chairperson with the goals, expectations and programming enabling me to focus on making a serious contribution to the League by presenting education programs to the league membership both provisional and actives the following year.

Occupation: Attorney, Caddo Parish Public Defender’s Office. I’m also on the faculty with the University of Phoenix.

Hometown: I was born in Shreveport, but actually grew up in Jacksonville, Arkansas.

College: I just “love” school…actually, the freedom that comes with being a student. Bingo!

“Put your marker on the free space,” is the first call of the game. What better way to spend a Thursday night than to play Hospital Bingo with the kids at LSU Hospital. We have had another great year with this placement. I have served on LSU Bingo for the past 4 years, and I have enjoyed watching this program grow. Initially, we had only a few children that would attend Bingo.

With the enthusiasm of the Child Life Specialist and the lovely Junior League ladies, the children now come excited and ready to win a prize. Hospital Bingo cards are drawn and announced in the Child Life Playroom, and are broadcast through a closed circuit television system on the pediatric floor of the hospital. This allows those children

who are too sick to come down to the Playroom a chance to have some fun and play Bingo. The volunteers have purchased prizes in the past, but this year the Junior League has purchased a minimal amount as more area churches have donated toys and prizes to the LSU Child Life Playroom.

Last year, we added a creative aspect to Bingo and started doing a seasonal craft at the end of each Bingo night. The children loved the idea of making something to take home which gave them a better memory of their visit to the hospital.

Whether you win or lose, everyone gets to choose a prize out of the enormous prize bucket, but ultimately each child wants to yell...“BINGO!”

For a period of two weeks in February, League ladies partnered with local organizations to promote healthy lifestyle choices for the children and youth of our community. This year, Kids in the Kitchen focused on nutrition and physical activity. Participants were educated on various topics and completed many fun activities as they traveled through our four stations—healthy food plate, healthy food choices, snack activity and exercise!

In the first station, we discussed the food plate diagram and what types of foods make up a healthy plate. Children also participated in an art activity where they drew on paper plates their own version of a healthy meal. In the second station, healthy food choices, we discussed different foods they like to eat and order at various fast food chains and convenience stores. We also compared and contrasted calories and discussed which choices were healthier. Children were giv-

en a healthy snack to go with some heart healthy tips stapled to it. In the snack station, children participated in creating their own yogurt treat by picking and mixing various healthy toppings. In the last station, children discussed reasons why exercise is so important for our bodies, types of exercise and how long/much we should exercise.

Children participated in charades, Simon Says, jump rope and hop scotch. All participants were given their own jump ropes and sidewalk chalk to take home.

Atkins Elementary, which was a new placement for Kids in the Kitchen, has already requested we come back next year. The coordinator for Atkins stated that this was the best program they had seen in several years for their student body.

By partnering with organizations such as Volunteers of America and Community Renewal as well as Atkins, League ladies were able to reach over 150 children.

Cookbook Mexican Slush Serves about 24

7 cups water 2 cups light rum 1 (12 ounce) can frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed 1 (12 ounce) can frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed 2 tbsp lemon-flavor instant tea granules 3 (2 liter) bottles ginger ale Maraschino cherries

Combine the water, rum, lemonade concentrate, orange juice concentrate and tea granules in a large freezer container and mix until the tea granules dissolve.

Freeze, covered for 8-10 hours or until firm.

Let the slush mixture stand at room temperature for 15 minutes.

Spoon enough of the slush mixture into glasses to fill halfway and top off with the ginger ale.

Garnish with cherries.
