It is wild to think this League year is coming to a close. It has been such a joy to be this year’s Parishscope editor. I thoroughly enjoyed encapsulating the memories from the year and the impact each of you had a hand in creating. It has always amazed me the amount of good we accomplish in a League year, but this year, bringing it together in each issue brought on a deeper appreciation for all the work that gets put into the League. From the Board to the head volunteers to the Provisional members, everyone plays a vital role in the League’s success, and it has been an honor to put that into print for you all to see.
As we dive into our final Parishscope issue of the League year, I challenge you to soak up the memories, remember your role in the change made for our community, and reflect on your impact in the League and in Shreveport-Bossier. We could not have gotten through this year without you, and I can’t wait to see what great things we will accomplish in the coming years! It has been a fun year full of laughs, hard work, and friendships. Enjoy a restful summer, and I look forward to an incredible 2024-2025 League year.

Wow! I cannot believe it is already time for me to write my final letter as Junior League President. This has been a year full of learning experiences for me that I will never forget. You always hear that the fall is the busiest time of year to the JLSB, but really, things never actually slow down!
This winter and spring, our members continued on with our MAGIC mentorship program in partnership with the VOA Teen Club. I am so proud of the work Angie and her team did to serve these high school girls. We are also honored to be providing two of the program’s graduating seniors with scholarships as they continue their education post college. Red Apron Pantry is still in full swing as well! This project is continuously running, so while other programs get a respite, RAP serves families 12 months a year. I am grateful to Tara Jones and her leadership throughout the year. She took on this role the year following being Communications VP, when we were left without a head volunteer. Tara helped to bring back the “client’s choice” model to our food pantry, which we had not been able to do since 2019.
The Provisional class has been hard at work as well, learning about all the different placements and training opportunities we offer. Many have gone above and beyond, signing up for more shift opportunities and filling in where needed. We are thankful for them, and I am excited to welcome these women into Active membership on June 1.
Designer Bag Bingo was a huge success as well! Under the guidance of Katrina Sproules, we hosted over 700 women (and a few men) at the Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino ball room on March 28. We had many wonderful community sponsors, like our presenting sponsor, Hargrove Roofing, that made this our most successful DBB to date! I cannot go without thanking Sid Potts for some of the most beautiful jewelry for our Diamond raffle! We would not have such a momentous event without their continued support. Each year, we grow and learn from our DBB experience, and I know we look forward to bringing it back even better next spring!
The Board has also been busy at work with a lot of restructuring our operations. One of the main focuses of our
Ginny Lamb
Strategic Plan we implemented last year was to ensure sustainability. We, like most organizations, struggle to find volunteers willing to take time to volunteer their time and talents. The membership voted to implement the changes proposed by the Ad Hoc committee and approved by the Board, and we are thrilled that we have streamlined our operations by bringing back a board structure that resembles the past. We also instituted a Code of Conduct into our Policies and Procedures that clearly says the expectations of membership.
Finally, the Board also voted to approve a $15,000 Capital Improvement campaign. By the time this issue reaches your mailbox, we will have fixed the peeling paint on the outside of the building, power-washed and re-striped the parking lot, replaced the outside lighting to brighten the parking lot at night and created a safer environment by making necessary repairs to the building. I am so thankful that we were able to make the difficult but extremely necessary decision to spend money on this. Our building is part of our image in the community, and we need to reflect what we want to see in Shreveport-Bossier. We must be part of the solution!
I am incredibly thankful for the friendships that I have made. I could not have made it through without this incredible Board and Jodi Rives. Her mentorship and friendship and unwavering support has guided me in the challenging times that I have faced. I have learned more than I ever imagined! I am thankful to be able to take this hands-on training as I move on to continue focusing my energies on the VOA of North Louisiana Board, my church, my children’s school, and wherever else I can find a need in our community. Thank you all for trusting me to lead the JLSB, and I look forward to continuing to support our work as an involved Sustainer!
Very Sincerely,
Ginny Lamb 2023-2024 President
I cannot believe we are here in the 2024-2025 League year! Twelve years ago, in 2012, when I joined the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier, I never imagined I would be writing a letter as the incoming president. The Junior League has given me more opportunities to grow and learn in the past 12 years, and that is what I hope to help provide members in the coming year. From learning how to run a fundraiser to correctly addressing invitations, the JLSB has given me opportunities to challenge myself and learn new skills that have impacted my life and career.
Before we embark on this new League year, it’s important to acknowledge the leadership of Ginny Lamb, our 2023-2024 President. In a year marked by challenges and adversity, Ginny led our League with unwavering grace. Her ability to rally the Sustainers, the foundation of our League, in times of need was truly remarkable. Ginny’s selfless dedication to our community, always striving for what is best for the League, kept her grounded throughout the year. It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside her, and I am grateful to have made a lifelong friend in her.
As I envision the future of the Junior League of Shreveport Bossier, one-word resonates: Unity. Unity, the state of being united or joined as a whole, is the essence of our membership. We are a diverse group of women, hailing from different backgrounds, beliefs, occupations, and hometowns, yet we come together to fulfill the mission of our organization. It’s awe-inspiring that a group of 125 Active members can make such a profound impact on our community, all because we choose to unite for a mission we all believe in. Our League has a rich history of greatness in our community, and this legacy will continue as our focus remains steadfast on our mission.
I hope to see our membership grow in several ways this coming year; Growth in numbers, growth through training and education, and growth in confidence for the placement they are given. Our Provisional committee this year has already started to work on recruiting amazing women from our community to join our 2024-2025 Provisional class. Still, I encourage all members to invite at least one person who is not a member of the League to attend one of our interest meetings. This will allow women who may not know much about the JLSB to be provided information about our many
Alex Person
opportunities to serve our community. This year, I hope to bring back more training and education opportunities to the general meeting and opportunities for members to grow through attending training offered in our community and through AJLI. Lastly, I hope all members will engage with their placement and committees as they grow confident in the skills required to complete the placement. Whether it be fundraising, inner League placement, Board experience, or outward facing in our community projects, I hope each member will learn something new about the placement, our League, and themselves.
This year will be fantastic as we all unite to support the Shreveport–Bossier community. I cannot wait to lead you and work alongside each member as we continue to make a difference in the community we all love.
Alex Person 2024-2025 President

It is hard to believe this League year has come and gone! The 2023-2024 Provisional class is full of strong, intelligent and driven women, who I know will continue to make Junior League Shreveport-Bossier successful in our community. On behalf of the 2023-2024 Provisional Advisors and Provisional Chair, we’d like to thank the Provisional class for their commitment to the League and encourage them to continue their dedication and involvement throughout their active years.
In order to fulfill the requirements to become an Active member in the League, each Provisional attended monthly Provisional Meetings, General Meetings, and observed a Board Meeting. In addition, they each observed shifts in our community placements including MAGIC, Red Apron Pantry, and Artist for a Day. They also assisted with fund development shifts at Red River Revel, Pumpkin Patch, and Designer Bag Bingo. All of these observation and volunteer opportunities were a great way for the Provisional class to really grasp the impact Junior League has on our community.
Our spring was busy with Provisional and General meetings, and the event of the year, Designer Bag Bingo! Our March Provisional meeting was held at the League office with a guest speaker, President-Elect Alex Person. Alex briefly reviewed the Placement Handbook and answered
Olivia Hoogland
questions to ensure everyone understood the options for their first Active-year placement. After the review adjourned, we gave each Provisional the opportunity to submit their placement rankings for the 2024-2025 League year. Thank you, Alex, for joining us at our March meeting and sharing your vast JLSB knowledge with us!
The saying, “April showers bring May flowers” reigned true, as our April GMM was postponed due to inclement weather. This in turn bumped our April Provisional meeting to the following month. We look forward to meeting as a Provisional class one final time for our end-of-year party/ meeting in May!
The success of this year would not have been possible without the leadership of Provisional Chair Lindey Smith and our team of Provisional Advisors, Anna Brown Priestley Chelsa Jackson-Reese, and Brenda Mosley. I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside each one of you!
It has been a pleasure to serve as a Provisional Advisor and to meet so many incredible women in this year’s Provisional class. I truly believe each and every Provisional member will be a huge asset to JLSB for many years to come!

It’s been a great year with MAGIC (Mentoring Ambitious Girls to Inspire Change)! MAGIC is a wonderful partnership between the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier and Volunteers of America (VOA) Lighthouse Teen Club. The program focuses on positive engagement and personal development, and provides the young women a safe space after school.
MAGIC is a wonderful placement for women who enjoy building relationships with others and working together to be positive influences in the lives of young girls, as a mentor. Creating a safe space for the girls to open up and share their feelings and opinions, laugh, play games, and learn new things is the greatest reward. At the end of a long day, it often feels as freeing to us as volunteers as it is to the girls. MAGIC meets the second and fourth Monday of each month, September through April. Volunteers share presentations with the VOA girls about a variety of topics such as social media presence, self-care, journaling, and healthy lifestyle choices.
Junior League volunteers have joined together with the coordinator of the VOA Teen Club to discuss how we would approach various topics and what would be best suited for this group of girls. In doing so, we have covered topics such as self-love, the importance of forgiveness, social media decency, red flags in dating, and etiquette training. This was my second year in MAGIC, and what a wonderful year it was. It has been such an honor to serve as Head Volunteer and share this League year with some amazing women. Breonka Burnom as Assistant Head Voluteer; Canisha Tisby, Cassandra Key, Emily Colvin, Grace Nichols, Haley Hennssey, Kinta Magee, and Wynnifred Sanders served as MAGIC volunteers and mentors to the VOA girls throughout the year. We look forward to continuing a wonderful MAGIC year this next upcoming school year! The relationships formed are truly life changing for us all and we are grateful for the experience.
Designer Bag Bingo was a great success! This year brought a bigger crowd, a tasty treat, and even more excitement. Over 700 attendees filled the Sam’s Town Casino & Hotel ballroom for a night of fun! This sold-out evening was an incredible gathering of women—and some men—from not only Shreveport and Bossier City, but also ones who traveled from Ruston and East Texas. Designer Bag Bingo was a huge success selling out at 720 tickets one month before the event. We were ultimately able to raise over $75,000 to help the JLSB continue to support the Shreveport-Bossier community with our various community projects.
This fundraiser would not have been a success without the generous support of local businesses in our community, as well as our League members, Sustainers, and 1933 Society members. We cannot thank our host Sponsor, Sam’s Town Casino & Hotel, enough for their continued generosity and support. Sam’s Town opened up their ballroom to over 700 people to enjoy an incredible pork loin meal with vegetables, a fun martini glass with pasta, and delicious cheesecakes to top off the dinner hour before playing 10 rounds of bingo.
JLSB Sustainer and KTAL News anchor Jackie Jovic kept the evening fun and entertaining while guests played 10 rounds of bingo in the hopes of winning a fabulous designer handbag with a mass array of colors and styles this year. Designer handbags included two Tory Burch, two Dooney & Bourke, and of course, for round 10, a Louis Vitton Speedy 30 handbag. Dillards’ stores in both Shreveport and Bossier City were generous in collectively donating a handbag each, along with some gracious friends of JLSB, Precision Redline, Simply Chic, and Honorable & Mrs. Justin Courtney.

We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors! Our presenting Sponsor was Hargrove Roofing. We are also appreciate of our community partnerships with Sid Potts and Christus Health. Our Platinum Sponsor, Sugah Cotton Candy, sprinkled a touch of a sweet treat on our tables that was perfectly topped with little edible handbags. We thank our Silver Sponsors: Clarkes Jewelers, BOM Bank, Graf Orthodontics, Miramon Law, Happily Ever After Bridal Boutique; and Bronze Sponsors: Red River Bank, Boujee Gleaux & Co., and Dr. Erin Walker Family Dentistry, along with all our Table Sponsors, who played a big part in making this the best bingo yet.
One of the biggest hits of the night, right before our last round of bingo, were our Diamond raffle items donated by our incredible community partner, Sid Potts. One lucky winner was able to walk away with a pair of 18kt white gold pavé diamond hoop earrings totaling a value of $10,800. Over 50 raffle items were up for grabs in between bingo games, including a vintage hand-painted Louis Vitton Crossbody that was a steal for the night, valued at $1,500, claimed by a lucky $10 “Treat Yourself” ticket winner! All raffle prizes were donated from local businesses across Shreveport-Bossier.
The Designer Bag Bingo committee is already planning next year’s event and can’t wait to see what they have in store for 2025! Keep updated on the latest Designer Bag Bingo news by following the JLSB Facebook and Instagram pages.

School is winding down and endless sunny days are fast approaching. Life is going to be gourd this Summer. Oh my, was that another pumpkin pun? I just can’t seem to stay away from them. It’s probably because I am already so looking forward to the 2024 Pumpkin Patch at Provenance! It seems far away, but planning for this fabulous event has already begun to take place.
Pumpkins will arrive on September 28 with the Patch officially opening on the following Monday, September 30. As always, you can expect this year’s Patch to be full of family fun events while also being your number one stop for pumpkins of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Be sure to save the date—and room on your porch—because this is going to be a Pumpkin Patch you won’t want to miss!

This year’s Volunteer of the Year is Lindey Smith! For years, Lindey has been an outstanding volunteer for the JLSB. This year, however, she has gone above and beyond, standing out as an incredible volunteer and leader. She selflessly moved up to being Provisional Chair in the fall, and created a wonderful and supportive environment for our incredible Provisional class. She brought organization to the program, and developed fun activities for the advisors to lead our Provisionals as they taught them about the history of the JLSB. Lindey did all of this with positivity and a smile on her face. We are so fortunate that she will stay in this position one more year and lead the 2024-2025 Provisionals class. Thank you again for your selfless leadership, Lindey!
The President’s Award historically is awarded to someone who has given great support to the President throughout her term. While I had unbelievable support this year from family and friends, I would not have made it through this year without Jodi Penn Rives. She was a steady leader as we navigated unexpected challenges and was always there to answer questions and support me in any way I needed. Jodi’s guidance and institutional knowledge of both the JLSB and AJLI helped us make important improvements that we believe will create a more sustainable League. I am incredibly thankful that she agreed to be my Sustainer Advisor, and even more thankful to have her as a mentor and a friend. Thank you, Jodi, for guiding me through this year!
Each year, the Junior League is honored to award deserving seniors a scholarship as they graduate and continue their education. This year, we awarded one student from Caddo Parish, one from Bossier Parish, and two wonderful young women who have participated in our MAGIC mentorship program in partnership with the VOA of North Louisiana Teen Club.
Our Caddo scholarship winner is Analyce Jeane. Analyse is an ambitious young woman that loves serving her community. This May, she graduated from North Caddo High School with a 4.89 GPA. She has served her community over 2,000 volunteer hours and created her own fundraiser, Cupcakes for a Cause. This event raised over $5,000 for a mammography machine for the North Caddo Medical Center. She was inspired to raise money for this cause based on her own mother’s experience battling breast cancer, and wanting to bring the resources to her community in Vivian. We were honored to award a $1,000 scholarship to Analyce to help as she attends LSUS in the Fall!
Our Bossier Parish recipient is Hannah Grace Burch of Benton High School. Hannah Grace has dedicated hundreds of hours of service to her community by serving organizations like Common Ground, FCA, the Special Olympics, and more. She plans to attend Dallas Baptist University in the fall and intends to focus on Christian Studies and Political Science. She has a servants heart and wants to continue serving her community through her work.
Again this year, we were able to award two scholarships to our MAGIC program. This addition to our scholarship program was an easy decision to make. This year, we received two nominations for outstanding young women that have long been involved in our program. Ashanti Lemons and Jayla Jones have continued to work hard in school and we are so proud of them.
Ashanti is a graduating from Captain Shreve High School. She plans to attend Northwestern State University to study nursing. In her essay, Ashanti wrote “High school has taught me to cherish the time you have with your friends and family. It is a place where you learn and grow as a person. This is just the ending of the first chapter of my story, I have many more chapters to go through.”
Jayla is graduating from Southwood High School and plans to attend LSUS in the fall. She is interested in dentistry and wants to serve others. She is thankful to the VOA, her mom, and her mentors along the way that have pushed her to do her best every day. She feels high school has helped her to grow, mature and prepare her for her next steps.
The JLSB is so thankful we could honor all of these young ladies with scholarships. They reflect what we wish to see in our community and I am thankful that they wish to continue to grow and serve!

Leadership: As I begin writing this article, our leadership is attending Annual Conference in New Orleans. This year’s theme, “Unmasking Endless Potential” allows our Leaders to look at the potential within the Junior League of ShreveportBossier and our association at large; they’ll participate in conversations, including governance dialogue and business meetings, that provide member Leagues the opportunity to make decisions that drive the direction of the future of the Junior Leagues. Our Leaders will also network with other Leagues and learn best practices in membership retention, Sustainer engagement, fundraising, and nonprofit governance, plus share some of their journey from this year.
One exciting sidenote: AJLI President-Elect Alice Franz Glenn resides in New Orleans and served as JLNO President from 2018-2019. Alice’s experience in nonprofit management and strategic philanthropy will be invaluable as she leads the Association for the next two years as President.
I’d like to commend the JLSB Board and Management Team for the work they’ve done this year under the leadership of Ginny Lamb, President; Alex Person, PE; and Devon Leon, EVP. I’ve often mentioned to them that COVID was not kind to volunteer organizations and I watched as they persevered through some challenging times, celebrated successes, and completed the jobs they were called to do. Thank you for leading our League and making significant changes to sustain our longevity.
Members: This year also brought about the return of the Sustainer of the Year Luncheon, which honored two outstanding women: Ginny Murphy and Kim Poindexter, posthumously. We had a beautiful luncheon at East Ridge Country Club attended by 97 Sustainers, family, and friends of the honorees.
Virginia Barnwell Murphy moved to Shreveport from Charleston, SC, after marrying Tom Murphy and joined the Junior League in the 1980s. Her Provisional placement was the Lighthouse and, in true Ginny fashion, she has never left the Lighthouse (now the Volunteers of America of North Louisiana). Through her volunteer service she has touched the lives of hundreds of children in North Louisiana. She served on the Board of Volunteers of America from 2009 to 2015 and was a Cherish the Children Committee member
from 2010 to 2017. Other placements that Ginny had include: Puppets, McDade House, Call 3, and Charlie Bob at Louisiana State Exhibit Museum. Ginny also served on the Nominating Committee and as Nominating Chair.
Ginny’s passion for community service didn’t end with her tenure at the Junior League. She has continued to serve in various capacities in our community and has been an active member of the Board and multiple committees at Holy Angels; Volunteers of America (which now includes the Lighthouse); her church, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church; the Shreveport Garden Study Club; and her children’s schools.
“Ginny is a selfless community servant, always willing to offer her time, talents, and resources,” stated Vickie Meadows, Sustainer
“Ginny is one of those rare individuals who brightens the room when she enters. She is passionate about advocating for our most vulnerable citizens, individuals with disabilities. Always generous with her time, talents, and resources, Ginny Murphy exemplifies the excellent family member, volunteer, and board member. Her support has far-reaching and long-term results and helps us enhance the lives of those we serve,” said Laurie Boswell, Chief Executive Officer of Holy Angels
“Ginny is a dedicated volunteer, a gracious leader, and a thoughtful giver. She exemplifies commitment to service and is a true inspiration to women all over our community. Ginny is the right choice for the 2023 Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier Sustainer of the Year,” Sustainer Marti Lepow adds.
Our Sustainer of the Year Guidelines allow us to recognize a Sustainer posthumously and the committee was honored to receive the nomination of Kim Cotter Poindexter. For many of our members, reliving Kim’s League years and community service was a walk down memory lane filled with smiles and tears, as she is greatly missed.
Friend and Sustainer, Jane Bicknell, said, “When Kim passed away in March 2017, a big void was left in the Junior League, our community, and in many of our lives. The League and community lost a committed volunteer. Personally, we lost an incredible woman who was a loving wife, devoted mother, and a very true and loyal friend.
“Kim was the model volunteer. She was always avail-
able to help with any task—from the small dinner party to Bargain Haul! She was a perfectionist and always did things correctly and very well. Kim researched everything extensively. She loved a research project, leaving no detail uncovered or undone. Once she finished, she was confident that her research was successful!”
Her League career included Corresponding Secretary; Bargain Haul Chair with record sales of $120,000 with a net of $85,000; as President-Elect Kim fostered the process of changing the name from Junior League, Inc. to the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier, Inc.; Red River Revel Board of Directors; JLSB President; and Sustainer Advisor to both Bargain Haul and the JLSB Board.
After Kim’s Active service to JLSB, she passionately served GREAT (Great Rewards Equine Assisted Therapy), continued to serve at The Red River Revel as a Red Apron (Chair), the Ark-La-Tex Ambassadors, and the Cotillion Club. “Kim’s example of volunteerism made other volunteers, including me, excel. Any project she took on, she gave it ‘her all.’ She was a perfectionist and always researched the details and achieved wonderful results,” states Aliston Touchstone, Sustainer
“Losing such a trusted, kind, brilliant friend left a desperate hole in our community. As I look back on her contributions to not only the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier but this entire area, I realize that her gifts have continued to give. We have each tried to remember how to volunteer, how to lead, how to respect other’s opinions. Kim did a masterful job of sharing her talents without ‘showing off.’ She was, many times, behind the scenes, supporting and guiding leaders. She was simply THE BEST,” said Betty Henderson, Sustainer.
Mission: As you’ve read about the commitment to voluntarism that our Sustainers of the Year shared, you should be inspired to continue working in our community finding needs and serving others. As an organization of women whose mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training, there is nothing that we cannot do when our hearts are in tune with our community and we work together ‘on mission.’
In March 2000, during Celebration of Women Week, Kim Poindexter was asked to write an article on voluntarism for the Shreveport Times. I’d like share an excerpt from the article: “From the earliest days of our nation’s history, the spirit of volunteer service has been reflected in neighbors helping neighbors, communities reaching out to communities. For many, volunteering is key to a healthy, fulfilling, and meaningful life. Volunteering is giving. But there is so much more we can receive. Volunteering renews our connection to our community. We learn compassion, tolerance, and a sense of duty to respond when people are in need. Volunteers are committed citizens who continue to change our world, our community—one activity at a time.”
In closing, it’s been an honor and privilege to serve alongside our Board this year. We have much to be proud of and our future is bright. Next year, Vickie Meadows will serve as Sustainer Advisor to the Board and Heather Courtney will, once again, serve as Sustainer at Large. Their continued commitment to the League is commendable and they will need our support. Pay your dues, join the 1933 Society, attend events, follow our Instagram account (@juniorleaguesb), and most importantly, sponsor new members. Help the Junior League as we ‘unmask our potential’ in our community.

This heartfelt gesture remains etched in my memory as a beautiful and touching moment.

Any plans to serve in other community organizations in the future?
Yes! I’ve always loved volunteering and serving our community and look forward to continuing to serve.
When I joined the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier nine years ago, I was a person in search of a broader purpose. Every member of the JLSB has a personal reason that they decided to join this amazing organization. That reason for me was voluntarism. In college, opportunities for voluntarism and charity work abounded. Whether I was doing sorority philanthropy projects or volunteering through my campus fellowship group, there was always something at my fingertips to do for others. As an adult in the workforce, the opportunities for voluntarism must be sought out. Becoming a member of JLSB was vital for my growth as a woman, as a leader, and as someone who cares immensely for this community.
All JLSB Provisionals, Active members, and Sustainers should be very proud of the community projects that we have worked on this year. I truly believe that the four projects that we have are impacting so many people in ShreveportBossier, especially children. It is vital for League members to know and understand the impact we have. We work very hard every year as a League to raise funds, and we are blessed to be able to use those funds for lasting community outreach.
One thing that I want to highlight is the importance of coordination with other programs in our community. Working with and maintaining good relationships with our partners is fundamental to our outreach into Shreveport-Bossier. Our local community partners for our four projects are the Boys and Girls Club of America, the Red River Revel, Volunteers of America, and the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana. We are so grateful for the work that they do and are proud to be able to work alongside them.
The JLSB Active Kids project is a summer program that we do in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club. Meeting weekly in June and July, we enjoy providing activities, crafts, and snacks for the kids we see in the program. We do our best to encourage active and healthy lifestyles as they grow up. Our committee members get to build fun relationships with both the kids and also with each other along the way.
Our Artist for a Day program was one of our most resilient projects this year. Our committee leaders had a few unexpected hurdles to overcome, but we came together as a League and were able to have a successful event at the
Erin Walker
Red River Revel. We had phenomenal art projects for the thousands of children who came to the Revel. Being able to provide a free craft ensures that we are reaching all children to encourage their creativity. We are looking forward to finding a new partner in 2024-2025 to be able to launch a Spring event for Artist for a Day.
One of our busiest projects this year has been MAGIC, our girls’ mentoring program through the Volunteers of America. MAGIC has become a passion project for so many people who have been on the committee in the past and present. Building relationships with these young ladies and encouraging them to become strong women is one of the most important things our League does. This program has a lasting impact on everyone who commits their time and effort to the project. MAGIC spans the entire school year, and these girls are so worth our commitment.
Our final project, the Red Apron Pantry, is our nonstop, year-long project that gets no breaks. By the time the League year ends in May, the new Red Apron Panty committee has to jump in and be ready to start in June. This year, we have been able to implement the client’s choice program that COVID interrupted a few years ago. The families we serve are able to come in and shop around for the food items they want and need. Food insecurity is a real problem for many families in Shreveport-Bossier, and we are very happy to be working with the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana to help distribute much-needed food for so many people.
The 2023-2024 League year has presented some challenges for a few of the Community Committees, and I couldn’t be prouder of how these women have put their heads down, done the work, and gotten the jobs done. When women help one another, we truly are an unstoppable force. I want to thank my fearless leaders Devon Leon, Ginny Lamb, and Alex Person for always being there to support me; and my Assistant VP Ashley Morgan for being an amazing source of calm through some storms. To my head volunteers Amanda Dewett, Brittany House, Angie McCain, and Tara Jones, it has been a pleasure to work alongside you ladies. JLSB is indebted to all of you for your willingness to step into a role as a leader. It is not always easy, and I appreciate the sacrifices you have all made to ensure that the Junior League is creating a lasting impact on Shreveport-Bossier.
12 ounces fresh raspberries
3 cups Citron vodka
4 lemons, each cut into 8 slices
3 tablespoons sugar
6 cups lemonade (made from concentrate)
8 sprigs of mint
Mash the raspberries in a large bowl and mix in the vodka. Chill, covered, for 8 to 10 hours. Strain, pressing on the raspberries to extract additional juice; discard the solids. The raspberry vodka should measure about 3 cups.
Place the lemon wedges and sugar in a large pitcher and mash the lemons with a wooden spoon to release the juice. Add the raspberry vodka and lemonade and mix well. Chill, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 8 hours.
Pour the lemonade and mashed lemons over ice in eight glasses. Garnish each serving with a mint sprig.
Serves 8
4 (6-ounce) salmon fillets
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup peach jam
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 garlic cloves, minced
Line a broiler rack with foil and place in a broil- er pan. Arrange the fillets on the foil and sprinkle evenly with the salt. Mix the jam, soy sauce, and garlic in a bowl and spread one half of the peach mixture over the fillets.
Bake at 400 degrees for 18 minutes or until the fillets flake easily when tested with a fork. Remove from the oven and spread the fillets with the re- maining peach mixture. Broil for 3 minutes or until brown.
Serves 4
HERBED DRESSING
3 tablespoons minced fresh herbs (parsley, chives, basil)
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Juice of 1/2 lime
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1/ teaspoon Tabasco sauce
Yolks of 2 hard-cooked eggs
1 egg yolk
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
12 ounces tri-color rotini
Salt to taste
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 pound crawfish tails
1 cup chopped onion

1 tomato, chopped
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped water chestnuts
1 cup sliced black olives
1 cup chopped red bell pepper
Whites of 2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped
1 tablespoon rinsed drained capers
Pepper to taste
Process the herbs, lemon Juice, lime juice, vinegar, prepared mustard, salt, and Tabasco sauce in a blender until pureed. Add the hard-cooked egg yolks and raw egg yolk. Add the oil gradually, processing con- stantly until the oil is incorporated. If you are concerned about using raw egg yolks, use yolks from eggs pasteurized in their shells, which are sold at some specialty food stores, or use an equivalent amount of pasteurized egg substitute.
Cook the pasta in boiling salted water in a saucepan until al dente. Drain and toss with 2 tablespoons of the oil in a bowl. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons oil in a skil- let and add the crawfish tails, onion, garlic, and jalapeño chile. Sauté until the onion and crawfish are tender.
Toss the pasta, crawfish mixture, tomato, celery, water chestnuts, olives, bell pepper, egg whites, and capers in a bowl. Add the dressing and mix gently until coated. Sea- son with salt and pepper.
Chill, covered, until serving time.
