To so many, the spring season translates as a time for new beginnings as the grass greens and the flowers bloom. It is a promise of the warmth to come.

I think we can all agree that the spring of 2020 did not bring such inspiration, as the world fell victim to the global pandemic that is COVID-19. It has been a year of masks, social-distancing, and fear of the unknown. But take heart because it has also been a year in which you, as ladies of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier, have shined your brightest. In spite of the challenges we have faced since the latter part of the 2019-2020 League year until present, we have successfully adapted to change through the creativity, tenacity, and grace of each individual lady. This spring, we have cause for celebration!

In this issue, you will read how the women of JLSB have profoundly impacted our community both as a group and individually, and you will also see how we continue to boldly live out our mission as an organization through our strategic plan. It is my hope that the news of the positive strides that we have made will inspire you this spring, and that you will, once again, happily welcome this sweet season.

While gathering my thoughts for this issue of the Parishscope, I went back to our Spring 2020 issue, an issue that came out just before our world was seemingly turned upside down by the pandemic, to reflect on what life in the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier was like “pre-COVID.” To be honest, it has been hard lately to imagine or remember how we operated before Zoom meetings, virtual fundraising events, and voting via Google forms. In that issue, 2019-2020 President Katherine Douthitt shared a quote by Helen Keller in her letter, and rereading that quote led me to the one above.

It’s funny how a different quote by the same influential person could be so fitting a year later when little about this spring bears resemblance to February 2020— right down to the snow-covered grounds and subzero wind chill temperatures outside my house as I write this. But maybe it is also a bit poetic—a metaphor for the fact that while the world around us may look and feel completely different one year later, at our heart, the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier and our mission remain the same. I see that mission reflected in our members who continue to rise to every challenge placed in front of them. I see it reflected in the community and populations we serve.

Here are a few ways we have achieved success in this mission over the past few months—despite the trials that seem to persist all around us:

Our King Cake Classic 5K – 10K – Fun Run went completely virtual this year and wrapped up in the middle of one of the biggest winter storms we have seen in this area in decades. We appreciate everyone who participated and shared photos and stories of your runs. Our committee did an incredible job thinking outside the box and our Communications team really took advantage of the opportunity to take our social media presence to the next level throughout the week leading up to the virtual race days.

Designer Bag Bingo has also made the tough decision to move to an all-virtual platform and will be launching the JLSB “Bags, Bourbon, and Bling” virtual raffle in March. This new socially distanced event will be held April 18 – 22 via virtual and social media platforms and will feature two separate categories of raffle items. Read more details in the pages of this issue.

The Red Apron Pantry continues to operate without interruption, and while MAGIC has moved to all virtual, as well, they are still meeting twice a month over Zoom and having success in creating relationships with the mentees they serve through the VOA’s Lighthouse program. And our third year-round community placement, Safe Sitter, has had its own set of challenges related to the pandemic but that team has continued to push through and will be hosting sessions this Spring.

In January, the Board did a mid-year check in on our strategic and annual plans, and I was very pleased to see the tangible results of what all we have accomplished so far in the 2020-2021 League year. I invite you to read an update on this strategic plan progress in the pages of this issue. While working to accomplish a number of strategic plan items this year, we have also been planning for the future of the League and particularly next League year.

President-Elect Sarah Giglio, President-Elect-Elect (and current EVP) Margaret McDonald, and Executive VicePresident-Elect Michelle Wallace recently attended AJLI’s first virtual Winter Conference to receive necessary training for their leadership roles. An added bonus this year was that several of our other slated 2021-2022 board and management team members were also able to participate in this virtual conference at no extra cost to the League. I feel certain that the future of the JLSB is bright with these capable women at the helm.

I am sure there is so much more that has been accomplished in the past few months that I have failed to mention in this short letter. Goodness knows things have been anything other than quiet or easy, but through all of it, I can say without hesitation that my soul continues to be strengthened and all around me I see ambition inspired and successes being achieved. And more than anything, I am thankful for the community that is the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier so these trials do not have to be faced alone.

THE POWER OF COLLECTIVE IMPACT

Since 2014, Community Foundation of North Louisiana has hosted Give For Good, an online giving challenge that encourages everyone to get involved in philanthropy.

Now approaching its seventh year, the event has raised over $12 million for hundreds of North Louisiana nonprofits. Last year, the CFNLA staff was unsure of what to expect when giving opened just five weeks into quarantine. But as we are shown time and time again at the Foundation, this community is generous, kind, and supports each other in times of need. During Give For Good 2020, $1.98 million was raised by more than 5,500 donors from 49 states and six countries. As many local organizations continue to face challenges posed by COVID-19, the importance of philanthropy—especially through online giving—is greater than ever.

In the past year, nonprofits have had to remain flexible and innovative as needs, information, and guidelines constantly evolve. As many in our community face financial uncertainties, the demand for nonprofit services and

programs has increased. New safety and cleaning protocols add costs and staff time to existing programming.

While expenses rise, fundraisers have been cancelled or downsized, leading to funding gaps in many organizations providing critical assistance to those in need.

Addressing these gaps as a single donor may seem overwhelming, but this is where the power of collective impact comes into play. Our donations create a greater effect when working together. The median gift in Give For Good 2020 was $50. Out of 10,000 gifts, 62% were under $100. The average amount that each nonprofit raised was over $6,000. Seeing a $10 donation become part of a nearly $2M impact is the rewarding (and fun!) part of philanthropy.

This session will involve small group discussion, participant involvement, and time for Q&A. Morgan is an Orthodontist specializing in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. She is the first female orthodontist in Northwest Louisiana. In addition to her private Orthodontic practice, Lang Orthodontics, Dr. Lang travels to over 20 schools in the Shreveport-Bossier area to educate classes on health and nutrition, and to encourage children to care for their teeth from an early age.

Sarah and her husband, Preston, co-own Lowder Baking Company which began as Lowder King Cakes sharing small batches of king cakes and cookies with family and friends out of their own kitchen. Since opening their brick and mortar location on Fern Avenue in early 2019, they have expanded to offer a large variety of baked goods in addition to their well-known King Cakes.

Lindsey is a double board-certified facial plastics surgeon and the only female in the state of Louisiana with a solo private practice. She is also the founder and proprietor of startup businesses Every Man a King distillery and The Revenir Restaurant aimed at revitalization of downtown Shreveport.

What a year it has been for the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier! Who would have thought that so many things could happen in such a short period of time…

COVID-19, hurricanes, and what can only be described as a “snowmageddon”! I want to commend Saige and the entire board and membership for their “can-do” attitudes. Every single project and event had to be rescheduled, rethought, or redone. I am so proud to be associated with such a committed group of women!

I have been privileged this year to serve as the Sustainer at Large on the Board. Although much has changed since I was President many moons ago, much is still the same. We still have an amazing group of women volunteering their time and talents to improve our community. And, like us, they will go on to be Sustainers and continue to improve the community for many years to come.

Once you are a member of the Junior League, you just can’t stop volunteering! The training that the League provides is carried into many other nonprofit (and for profit) organizations. How many of us have been to a meeting led by someone who was not Junior League trained and thought “if she/he had been in the League, that meeting would have taken an hour instead of two!”? Or started a position with another nonprofit and found that there was no notebook for that position? I truly never valued hand-medown notebooks until the Junior League!

Thankfully, many Junior League members still serve in multiple organizations in many capacities to make our community the best place it can be! Junior League Sustainers continue to serve Shreveport, Bossier, and beyond; and our communities are better places because of all of our dedicated and trained volunteers! Kudos to each of you who continue to serve in other nonprofit organizations!

Because of the state of the world right now, we have been unable to plan Sustainer events this League year but we hope to be able to resume activities very soon. I certainly miss seeing all of you! In respect for everyone’s health and safety, we have postponed the Sustainer of the Year luncheon for this year. If the League is able to have a May meeting, we think it would be fun to include the Sustainers, so stay tuned!

Since we haven’t had Sustainer events this year, I thought it would be fun to share a few “throwback” photos from my time in the League. All of the ladies in these photos became my great friends, and I have continued to serve in other organizations with many of them since we became Sustainers. I am forever grateful to the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier for giving me the opportunity to serve with so many wonderful women and providing me training that has been invaluable in continuing my voluntarism as a Sustainer.

PROVISIONAL

It’s hard to believe we are quickly approaching the end of the League year. I cannot brag enough about what a wonderful job our Provisionals have done navigating these strange times with us. Through virtual meetings, distanced holiday parties, virtual Annual Interviews, and distanced Community Placement Observations these women have shown flexibility, diligence, and excitement for the Junior League and an eagerness to be a part of giving back to the community.

Ending the year 2020 strong, our Provisionals were able to have their first in-person gathering in December. What better way to gather than in the form of a holiday party? With COVID guidelines in place, we were able to spread out, socialize, and make our very own holiday wreaths to take home.

For some, it was their first time making a holiday wreath; for others they were able to share their tips and tricks with their fellow Provisionals. It was a great time had by all and a fun way for the ladies to spend time together and celebrate the holidays.

January gave the Provisionals an opportunity to reflect on their League year so far, with them getting to participate in their first yearly interview. The ladies were able to share about their experience so far, discuss where they saw themselves going within the League, and preparing to finish out their Provisional year strong. We are so thankful for their great feedback, it is essential in making our Provisional program stronger each year.

In February, the Provisionals have had more opportunities to observe our Red Apron Pantry in action. Ladies take part in the packing process, where they gather up and bag/ box the healthy food needed for each household in preparation for distribution day. Provisionals were also able to distribute the packaged food to those members of our community who are highest in need. Provisionals were also given the

opportunity to learn more about the impact of social media for the JLSB at our February Provisional meeting. They learned how social media allows us to gain community awareness and draw in new members. They also learned about the moving parts within the League that are associated with a successful fundraiser—which helps the Provisionals gain understanding of the importance of our Fund Development events and the need for shifts.

Coming in March, our Provisionals have the exciting task of selecting their first official placement, which they will carry out during their first year as Active Members of the Junior League. Provisionals will select their inaugural placements from one of our community-based placements, allowing them the opportunity to be a part of the work we do within our community—a great way to see how integral all the parts of the League are in making changes for our community.

Although this Provisional year has thrown many obstacles in our path, I am constantly amazed at how our Provisionals have pushed through and made the best of every situation.

Nothing has been ideal this past year and it has definitely been a challenge to get a real experience of everything the League has to offer. Through it all, these ladies have been constantly seeking out ways to get involved in the scheduled community activities. I am so proud of their eagerness to dive into all that the Junior League offers and it is a constant reminder of what a wonderful asset they are to our organization. Thank you on behalf of the Provisional team, to all of the Actives in Community and Fund Development placements, the Board, Sustainers, and anyone who has sacrificed their time to educate, encourage, and be a model to our Provisionals.

Your time has not gone without notice and you are truly appreciated. Together we have made this a great year!

KingCake Classic VIRTUAL 5K / 10K / FUN RUN

THE 2021 KING CAKE CLASSIC WAS A VIRTUAL SUCCESS!

In early December 2020, the King Cake Classic Committee, with support from the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier’s Board of Directors and Management Team, made the difficult decision to transition the 5th Annual King Cake Classic to a completely virtual event to protect the health and safety of all its participants. With this change came the opportunity to extend the dates of the race and reach potential participants outside of Northwest Louisiana! It also pushed the committee members to think outside of the box for ways to create a fun and engaging online experience, all in a matter of weeks.

The Virtual King Cake Classic came together thanks to strong support from community sponsors, race participants, and even restaurant patrons. Torchy’s Tacos and PizzaRev, both new sponsors for the League, hosted profit-share events. A Kid’s Choice and Red River Bank were also first-time sponsors of the King Cake Classic. The committee is especially thankful for returning sponsors Quality Shades & Shutters, jweinland Group Benefits, Southern Roots Dentistry, Jennifer Bradford Photography, Lowder Baking Company, Christus Shreveport-Bossier Health System, and Sid Potts, Inc.

To encourage registrations and enhance the virtual race experience, Clarkes Jewelers, lululemon, and Breathe Yoga Shreveport all donated fabulous prizes for raffle drawings. Every registered participant was entered into a drawing to win one of three $1,000 gift cards to Clarkes Jewelers as well as an invitation to a private shopping event. Every participant who visited the lululemon popup shop and showed they were registered for the King Cake Classic was entered into a raffle to win a piece of gear valued up to $148. Finally, participants who shared their race selfie to a discussion in the Facebook Event were entered into a raffle to win a gift from Breathe Yoga Shreveport. Each raffle drawing was recorded and shared on the League Facebook page.

In total, there were 126 Virtual King Cake Classic participants and 29 were out of towners from as far away as Arizona, Florida, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. Leila Gerencser of Bossier City, LA, and Bobby Bruno of Bossier City, LA, were the overall 5K winners.

Catherine Guidry of Shreveport, LA, and John Baker of Fort Worth, TX, were the overall 10K winners. Congratulations to the overall winners, age group winners, and every Virtual King Cake Classic participant! This event would not have been possible without these road warriors.

INITIATIVE 1.2: Evaluate obligations, placements, and slated positions to ensure that members’ time and talents are used effectively and efficiently during tenure of membership. Addressed through Operational Planning and feedback from members to their Council VPs during project wrap up meetings and post-placement surveys.

INITIATIVE 1.3: Assess and review role of advisor and member relationship to ensure that individual members’ needs, strengths, and goals are being reviewed and assessed on a yearly basis. Also on-going – The Nominating

Chairman and President have worked together to develop a framework for the advisor/membership relationship and how it should function throughout the League year and a member’s experience.

INITIATIVE 1.4: Ensure that strategic direction is communicated to members and that members’ voices are reflected in strategic direction of JLSB. Implemented a member engagement survey to inform November small group meetings this year as well as the reintroduction of Education Workshops to address member feedback concerning member experience and development. We have also added a “comment box” to the member homepage on Digital Cheetah for feedback to be given throughout the year. (✓) INITIATIVE 1.5: Create a committee to research, develop, and implement a plan with a variety of opportunities for members to connect to other members. Member Engagement Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator. (✓) INITIATIVE 1.6: Evaluate content of Provisional Program and memorialize processes utilized to select Provisional Community Project. It was determined during the 2018-2019 League Year that there would no longer be a separate community project specific to the Provisional class but rather Provisional members would observe existing community placements throughout their Provisional year. (✓) INITIATIVE 1.7: Create an acknowledgment committee to recognize significant events in lives of members. The Membership Council works with the Board and Management Team to ensure life events are recognized properly by the most appropriate member in leadership. The Celebrations section of the Parishscope also highlights exciting life events of our members.

INITIATIVE 1.8: Assess and utilize training budgets to empower members to become the best civic and community leaders. One unforeseen benefit to the pandemic has been that our financial resources have been able to be stretched to include more members than in the past since AJLI training opportunities have all been virtual this year. Additionally, we have been able to allocate resources to members for them to participate in other virtual training opportunities through sister Leagues like the Junior League of New Orleans.

INITIATIVE 1.9: Review, adjust, and develop new opportunities for Sustainers to be regularly engaged in leadership development and community impact efforts. The pandemic has caused us to be in a holding pattern due to the demographics of many of our Sustainers. Our hope is to combine the honoring of the Sustainer of the Year with our May End of Year Celebration to connect Sustainers with Active members and celebrate the League as a whole on that day instead of separate celebrations for each member group.

INITIATIVE 1.10: Evaluate the AJLI Membership Rollout Transformation.

STRATEGY 2: The JLSB will operate from a

sufficient and sustainable resource base by employing effective fund development initiatives and prudently allocating fund development resources.

ADDRESSING THE PILLARS: III, I, IV INITIATIVES TO ACHIEVE STRATEGY 2: INITIATIVE 2.1: Evaluate the allocation of all fund development (ways and means) resources, including fundraising events budgets, value of volunteer hours, ways and means financial obligations, and membership dues. Our current Fund Development Research & Development chair has done extensive work in this area over the past two years. This chair is now included in all Fund Development event wrap up meetings in order to collect this much-needed data.

INITIATIVE 2.2: Assess current fundraising events strategy and develop and implement criteria for selecting fundraising events. We are utilizing data collected from Initiative 2.1 to access all current fundraising events, but this year the data is skewed due to the pandemic. It is the decision of the operational planning committee to not make changes at this time. (✓) INITIATIVE 2.3: Develop an investment plan utilizing a third-party consultant. In the 2018-2019 League year, we diversified our savings accounts to maximize our interest returns and also established an endowed fund with the Community Foundation of North Louisiana.

INITIATIVE 2.4: Deplete cookbook inventory with the understanding that cookbooks can be utilized for marketing efforts. The current cookbook committee has come up with a number of new, innovative ideas for moving the cookbook inventory. Sales have been strong despite limitations related to the pandemic.

INITIATIVE 2.5: Research and develop a long-term individual giving campaign to expand our current individual giving campaign (1933 Society).

INITIATIVE 2.6: Develop a committee focused on researching and applying for grants.

INITIATIVE 2.7: Manage current and fixed assets in a prudent manner.

INITIATIVE 2.8: Create, improve, and solidify corporate community partnerships. We have expanded our partnership with Christus to include community partner highlights related to healthy living in our JLSB internal communications. We also added Clarkes Jewelers as a year-long corporate/community partner this year.

INITIATIVE 2.9: Utilize Donor database in Digital Cheetah to track past, current, and potential donors. INITIATIVE 3.5: Incorporate brand standards as outlined

by AJLI. Work on this initiative began several years ago with a revision to the Parishscope and social media presence to adhere to AJLI brand standards. This year we have been working on a revised website to comply with these standards on that platform, as well. The new website will launch before the end of the current League year.

INITIATIVE 3.6: Ensure accurate internal perception of the JLSB through consistent messaging in a variety of communication formats. On-going work by the Communications Council in conjunction with the Executive Vice-President and President. (✓) INITIATIVE 3.7: Assess, review, and develop, as needed, formal processes and standards for JLSB external communication, including social media and website.

INITIATIVE 3.8: Develop criteria to evaluate and maintain the integrity, quality, and accuracy of publications and distributions lists. On-going work of Management Team and the Communications Council. The Parishscope distribution list was revised this year to ensure all recipient information was updated.

STRATEGY 4: The JLSB will be a leader in affecting positive change in the Shreveport-Bossier area through impactful programming and the training of civic and community leaders.

ADDRESSING THE PILLARS:II, I, III INITIATIVES TO ACHIEVE STRATEGY 4:

(✓) INITIATIVE 4.1: Implement and grow the “Red Apron

Pantry” Project. Currently in our third successful year, the Red Apron Pantry was one of the only food banks in our area that remained open during the entire course of the COVID-19 pandemic and after Hurricane Laura. (✓) INITIATIVE 4.2: Create and develop processes to determine measurable impact of each current community project and their accord with JLSB mission. Our Project Research & Development team has worked with the Community Council this year to develop a comprehensive placement “exit survey” for members that will allow us to better collect quantifiable data related to our projects. Additionally the PR&D team is included in all wrap up meetings of community projects in order to collect data first hand, as well. (✓) INITIATIVE 4.3: Develop and implement criteria for continuing current community projects and selecting new community projects. The data collected as part of Initiative 4.2 is used by PR&D to address this initiative. (✓) INITIATIVE 4.4: Determine and implement an effective means for gathering input on needs and wants of the community. The development and utilization of the Community Advisory Board (a board comprised of representatives from a wide cross section of area non-profit and service organizations) has helped us gather this much-needed input.

INITIATIVE 4.5: Evaluate the community impact of a narrower or singular focus, such as an issued or demographic based emphasis. This initiative relies heavily on Initiative 4.4, and due to the pandemic, we have been unable to meet consistently with the CAB which has resulted in delays to this.

INITIATIVE 4.6: Explore community partnerships with other non-profit organizations.

INITIATIVE 4.7: Determine an effective way to communicate JLSB community programming and impact (to include education component addressing underlying issues being addressed by community projects) both internally and in the Shreveport-Bossier community. The Project Research & Development team is working to synthesize all of the information collected as part of Initiative 4.2 and supply that information to our Communications Council in order for them to effectively communicate our impact to our members and the community-at-large.

INITIATIVE 4.8: Create and utilize a community contact database. We have worked to update and expand our “Out of League” mailing list as a starting point for this community contact database.

It’s hard to believe it, but it is time to begin considering what your selection will be for your 2021-2022 League placement! If this past League year has shown us anything, it is that we are adaptable to change. A lot of placements turned out to be quite different than members expected when signing up, but each and every one of you continued to show up and get the work done despite the challenges we faced.

The placement process gives members the opportunity to showcase existing skills and seek out chances to dive into something new. Be sure to give the Placement Handbook a thorough read to see the different opportunities the League has available to you. The handbook will be posted on the Digital Cheetah homepage under the Resources Tab very soon.

When considering various placements, really evaluate how much time you have and want to dedicate to the League. We offer a wide variety of time commitment options. Some placements take a little bit of time consistently over all the months of the League year while some options will take a lot of time within a concentrated window. Please include any information regarding life events or scheduling conflicts in the comments section when selecting your placement online. The more information you provide, the better equipped we are to match you with a placement that will be a great fit.

If you are having trouble finding the best fit for you, the “Planning your JLSB Career” document, also found under the Resources Tab under Placement Handbook and Information, can help. This can help you identify your skills and where they could best be put to use to benefit the League. It will also give you an idea of skills that can be developed in a particular placement if you are looking to branch out and really try something new.

Another great resource is the League member currently in a position you are considering.

Fundraiser

BAGS, BOURBON, & BLING

As the Designer Bag Bingo Committee began planning the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier’s annual fundraising event, it quickly became clear that the restrictions and safety regulations put in place due to COVID-19 were going to pose a unique set of challenges. The Junior League still has a great partnership with the Horseshoe Casino, which was (and still is) willing to host us and give us unbelievable support. Almost a year into the pandemic, however, the number of reported cases of COVID-19 have not improved significantly, and many restrictions are still in place.

Additionally, many people do not feel comfortable attending large in-person events. For those reasons, we feel this year that hosting Designer Bag Bingo is not in the best interest of Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier.

For the past several months, we’ve researched other options, including creating a virtual Designer Bag Bingo.

We initially thought that our best and safest option would be to move the event online. We discovered, however, that the state of Louisiana does not allow an organization like ours to host online gambling, which includes bingo.

We are therefore creating a new event that draws inspiration from our Designer Bag Bingo event, which

has always included gorgeous handbags and multi-level raffles. This new event will be called Bags, Bourbon, and Bling. It will be a five-night virtual raffle!

Bags, Bourbon, and Bling will take place via social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Top prizes will include: Louis Vuitton and Gucci Handbags, rare bourbons, and diamond jewelry from Sid Potts and Clarkes Jewelers.

These prizes are included in our Bags, Bourbon, and Bling ticket category and the price of this ticket will be $50. We will draw one winner each night from this category.

In addition, we will offer a lower priced ticket called a “Treat Yourself Raffle”! This ticket will include spa treatments, local art, restaurant vouchers, costume jewelry, and more. This ticket will be $15, and we will draw multiple winners from this raffle each night. Tickets are on sale through our website: jlsb.org.

Why did you join JLSB? I joined JLSB to meet like-minded women—the go-getters, the leaders, the “hands and feet” of the community. A group of empowered women who crave the betterment of their community and its future are unstoppable!

Occupation: Intelligence Analyst with the Federal Government What is your biggest accomplishment so far career-wise?

In my career so far, I am most proud of my work in combatting Human Trafficking in the Shreveport-Bossier area. Traffickers prey on the most vulnerable persons, oftentimes their victims are minors. I work alongside a dedicated group of law enforcement personnel committed to rescuing victims and identifying and arresting those targeting them.

SARAH-BETH Y. BUMP, 4th Year Active

What is your biggest accomplishment so far career-wise?

I started my career with Progressive Bank in 2013. Shortly thereafter, I sought out another career opportunity and decided to leave the banking world. After realizing the grass isn’t always greener, I knew that Progressive Bank was where I was meant to be—the Lord will allow us to wander, but He will always lead you back home. From there, I worked my way from a part-time teller to Branch Manager. My biggest accomplishment in my career isn’t finite. It is knowing that every day, I have the opportunity to serve others, whether that’s through financial wellness and education or just brightening a customer’s day. These incredibly rewarding relationships with customers and co-workers alike brings so much joy and fulfillment to my life.

It really is true what they say—when you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life.

KATIE ADGER, 2nd Year Active

What has been your biggest accomplishment in Junior League?

My biggest accomplishment in Junior League is helping provide and serve the families in need of our community through the Red Apron Pantry. Being a member of Junior League has given me the opportunity to not only support those in need throughout our community, but has also allowed me to acknowledge the incredible need for services and community outreach programs such as the Red Apron Pantry. Seeing the smiles on the families’ faces when we hand them their groceries is one of the greatest joys I have ever experienced, and very little will ever be able to compare to it.

How do you feel your participation in JLSB and the training it provides can help you in your career?

My participation and membership in JLSB has helped me grow in my leadership role in my career. It has also helped me be able to recognize the financial education needs within our community and how to better serve those who may have never had the opportunity to learn these necessary life skills.

Why did you join JLSB? My reason for joining the JLSB was two-fold.

I wanted to serve my community through volunteering and I love how the League offers so many volunteer opportunities in various projects. My second reason for joining is I had recently moved back to Shreveport and knew the League would be a wonderful way to meet people.

Do you have any goals for future League years?

I hope to become more involved in the League in my future years, possibly helping develop new community projects.

How do you feel your participation in JLSB and the training it provides can help you in your career?

Participation in the JLSB has helped me have a more comprehensive understanding of the needs of the Shreveport-Bossier community.

My job is centered on serving the community.

I appreciate the League’s opportunities for self-development, especially with leadership opportunities. I tend to be introverted and such trainings will help me in my career and my aspirations to become a supervisor in my organization.

KATRINA FARRIS, 2nd Year Active Occupation: Pharmacist (Graduate Student Intern) What is your biggest accomplishment so far career-wise?

The biggest accomplishment of my career so far was finishing pharmacy school. Graduate school is already extremely challenging, but being a single mom of a toddler while in school full time, and working a full-time job, made me appreciate every moment we spend together now. I missed moments that I will never get back, but everything we had to go through to get where we are today, makes the hard times that much more worth it. I have a career that I am proud of and I can provide my son the life he deserves. I will also say that being named one of Shreveport’s Top 40 Under 40 professionals last year was a very noteworthy accomplishment as well!

Why did you join JLSB? I originally joined Junior League to network, but in the time that I have been in the League, I have gained so much more. I have been blessed with true friendships with women that I would have never crossed paths with if it wasn’t for Junior League. I have been able to fine tune my leadership skills, and also practice creativity with things like fundraising ideas that I wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to take part in. Joining JLSB was one of the best decisions I’ve made thus far.

Do you have any goals for future League years?

My goals for future league years are to do anything I can behind the scenes. I love the new diversity and inclusion initiative that Junior League is creating and I think that is where I can offer the most help. I do, however, love organizing, planning, and fundraising, so Designer Bag Bingo might be my happy place/ home for the next few years.

How do you feel your participation in JLSB and the training it provides can help you in your career?

I have never been a shy person, but public speaking and really connecting with the audience I’m speaking to has been something that I struggle with. I haven’t had any formal Junior League training on public speaking, but being in leadership positions within the League has helped me tremendously with my comfort level when speaking to my coworkers, patients, and even upper management when presenting research. I found that when I knew more about my topic, I felt less anxiety and was an all-around better speaker/presenter. I learned this tidbit about myself on my placement last year. New members have some great questions and having to research to find them answers, made talking to the ladies much easier and more authentic because I knew my subject matter.

FELECIA GIPSON, Provisional Occupation: Principal, Eden Gardens Elementary Magnet School What is your biggest accomplishment so far career-wise?

My biggest career-related accomplishment to-date is the distinct honor and privilege of serving the students, teachers, and families of Eden Gardens Magnet School each day. When I began my career as an educator, leadership was always my goal, and to lead such an amazing school is something that I treasure.

Additionally, earning my doctorate in Organizational Leadership in December 2020 solidified years of hard work and commitment.

Why did you join JLSB? My decision to join JSLB was based on an urge to contribute to our community in an impactful way and to surround myself with like-minded, driven women who empower one another. I am a native of South Louisiana, and when I moved to this area, I immediately settled into my career while devoting all of my time to my family and my studies. JLSB has provided an avenue that I can forever utilize to extend myself into the community in a way that benefits others. In addition, I personally benefit from the ability to build new relationships and networks.

Do you have any goals for future League years?

My goals for future league years are to further immerse myself in the JLSB mission, expand my leadership skills, and inspire others to do the same.

How do you feel your participation in JLSB and the training it provides can help you in your career?

JLSB allows me to serve the community in which I lead. This is a critical component of effective leadership. It’s important that leaders connect with the community they serve. Additionally, through JLSB, I am exposed to new people and networks. These benefits are both socially and professionally impactful. I look forward to growing and learning through the years.

Women’s Day

INTERNATIONAL

Monday, March 8 was International Women’s Day. This year in particular, we should reflect on what this day meant and celebrate the strong women around us, who, particularly in 2020, have gone above and beyond in creatively working from home, parenting in whole new ways, becoming at-home teachers for their virtual students, and business owners whose businesses look completely different now than they did in 2019. Since the global inception of International Women’s Day in 1911, the purpose of this day has been for “celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.” While we should be lifting each other up every day, it is nice to see a specific day dedicated to lifting up and celebrating our female colleagues, friends, and family members.

When asked to write this article about International Women’s Day, I was thrilled, because I have been so impressed by the women around me as we live in this time where adaptability and creativity are such important qualities. As you can imagine, the Board of Directors and Management Team for the Junior League of ShreveportBossier have had to learn how to pivot, and I have been absolutely blown away at their strength and flexibility. From making King Cake Classic a virtual event to the Red Apron Pantry never closing its doors (and, in fact, expanding to serve additional families) during the COVID-19 pandemic, the women of the JLSB have continued to shine and provide excellent services, resources, and events to the Shreveport-Bossier community.

The wonderful committee for Designer Bag Bingo worked hard to creatively look at how we can make their event this year successful and safe virtually. In creating Bags, Bourbon, and Bling to substitute our annual bingo games for 2021, they have done exceedingly well. You might think that our Revel Artist for a Day programming couldn’t

have happened because the Revel did not happen…but you would be wrong. Our innovative committee members did an amazing job adapting that community program to still reach many children and educate them about the arts in spite of the fact that the Revel did not happen in its traditional form. In addition to these outward-facing placements, our membership and communications teams have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support our members and promote the work of the women in our League.

These are yet more examples of women doing what women do best—creatively adapting.

So what are some ways that you can celebrate and participate in International Women’s Day, even if retroactively, here at home? You can use your social media to raise awareness, including the hashtag for the 2021 International Women’s Day theme, #ChooseToChallenge throughout the month of March. You can attend online panels/resources that are available to you related to women—our history, equality, and how much even one woman can accomplish.

Many of these resources are available to us as Junior League members on the Association of Junior Leagues International website (www.ajli.org). You can support womenowned businesses. You can donate to a women-focused non-profit. Read and discuss a book about a women you find inspiring or who you would like to learn more about.

And finally, something we should really be doing every day—you can and should acknowledge and thank the amazing women in YOUR life—who inspires YOU every day to be the inspirational woman that you are.

Let’s all take part in a celebration of International Women’s Day in our own little corner of the world. Let us continue to inspire change and progress, and let us never forget to lift one another up.

COOKBOOK RECIPE

What better way to celebrate warmer weather than having a few close friends over for an outdoor dinner? But what should you serve? How about a full-on salad supper—tossed salad to start, a pasta salad to follow, and a refreshing fruit salad for dessert! Here is where you can find the first two, and then a recipe for the dessert!

You can find a wonderful recipe for a layered green salad and a savory pasta salad with steak on page 63 and page 132, respectively, in our Mardi Gras to Mistletoe cookbook.

For dessert, treat yourselves and your guests to a fresh fruit salad. This recipe can be found on page 35 of A Cooks Tour of Shreveport: Favorite Southern Recipes.

FRESH FRUIT SALAD Fruit:

Dressing:

1 cup seedless grapes

2 egg yolks

1 cup diced bananas

2 tablespoons sugar

1 cup fresh or canned pineapple, diced

2 tablespoons orange juice

1 cup Bing cherries, pitted

2 tablespoons vinegar

1 cup oranges, diced

1 tablespoon butter

1 cup cantaloupe balls

2 cups sour cream

2 large plums, sliced

Salt to taste

2 cups miniature marshmallows

To make dressing, combine eggs and sugar. Mix

well. Add vinegar and orange juice, and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens. Remove from heat. Stir in salt and butter, and cool completely.

Fold in sour cream. Chill. After the mixture has chilled, combine with marshmallows and fruits which have been thoroughly drained and refrigerated for 24 hours before servicing.
