Leslie Smith Fall is upon us and while many of you are settling into a new school year and preparing your homes for a new holiday season, the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is busy getting ready for a new year’s worth of wonderful events for our members and the community. I hope you are all looking forward to the 3rd annual Kitchen Tour. Read about a newly added VIP option with provided transportation on page 20. I am most excited about the Pumpkin Patch at Provenance and can’t wait for pumpkin picking with my kiddos in October.

Letter From the

We hope that everyone has had a great summer and is ready for an engaging year with the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier! I know that many of you have already been working hard on your placements in preparation for this year and I am truly thankful to each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication.

I have been working on our 1933 Society and I am proud to say that we have had 45 members contribute and we raised $20,325. I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support for our League and our mission and I am proud that so many of you took the time and money to support us.

We value your support and we appreciate your trust in our League.

As I have worked to prepare for this year, I am committed to ensuring that our mission is the central focus of everything we do—promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. As I have met with many of our active and sustaining members over the last several months, many of you have told me that you joined the League as a way to give back to our community, but that you stay in the League for your own development. We live in a community that is fortunate to have many great nonprofit organizations where you could choose to volunteer your time. What makes the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier different from those organizations is that we are an organization of women committed not just to voluntarism and improving our community, but also to improving our community by developing your potential.

To help you in developing this potential, we have changed the format of our general membership meetings.

Our meetings will now be focused on education and training. We are planning to have training as the focus at all of our general membership meetings and will offer something that helps you all learn and grow as individuals. I hope you have already experienced this with our September general membership meeting and the great training provided by past JLSB Presidents Peggy Murphy and Ginger Lukacs. We are working on an amazing lineup for our meetings that I think each of you will enjoy. Stay tuned as we provide more information to you about that training.

I read Liane Moriarty’s book Truly Madly Guilty on my summer vacation and she had a quote that reminded me of what makes our membership in the JLSB special: “You could jump so much higher when you had somewhere safe to fall.” One of the best parts of being a member in the

JLSB is that we are truly a safe place for you to develop your potential. You do not have to be ready for any placement on day one, but we will work hard to support you and provide you a safe place so that you can become the best version of yourself. If you want to work towards personal development, remember to say yes when nominating calls you for a slated position or when placement calls to ask if you will take a leadership role that you did not choose. If nominating or placement calls, remember that they think you can do the job and we will work to help you succeed.

When you are choosing your placement for next year, remember to try something new or consider a leadership role even if you do not think you are ready. I can assure you that I was not ready to serve you on day one of my presidency, but with all of your support and guidance, I know that I will be ready on day 365.

You can also develop your own potential by developing someone else’s potential. Many of the leaders in our League simply said yes to a call to serve. Many of those leaders knew that they could do their placement because of the support our members would provide. So, let’s make sure that we are supporting our leaders and our members. If you are on a committee and you think your head volunteer is falling short in an area, criticize less and support more. If you have a particular skill set that your committee needs, offer your help, even if it is more than what your placement requires. We live in a world that is full of negativity and criticism; let’s make sure that we are all working to provide our members with a safe place to excel.

I recently met with a sustainer and she told me what she enjoyed the most about the League is that when you meet another JLSB member in the community, you automatically support her because you know that you both share the same commitment to our mission. Work with me this year to make sure that we are supporting and guiding one another. Take a chance with me and step outside of your comfort zone, because we have a safe place to fall. Commit to our mission of not just improving our community, but on developing our own potential. If we work on all of these things, I think you will find that the JLSB’s 84th year is not just a great year, but it could be your best year!

Sust ainer Advisor Letter From the

I am honored to serve as the Sustainer Advisor to the Board of Directors this year as well as the Sustainer Panel Chair. At our first Board meeting, I realized what a great group of talented ladies are leading our League this year!

This dynamic group is the first one to lead under a new governance structure.

Under the new governance structure, we are able to have one more sustainer representing us at the Board of Directors level. I am excited to be working with our new Sustainer-at-Large Shelly Ragle. Sustainers have never been more represented in our League at the Board of Directors level. What a wonderful opportunity to have our voice heard, support our active members, and help make an impact in the community!

I am not only excited to represent you at the Board level, but also about chairing the Sustainer Panel. Besides working on selecting our Sustainer of the Year, this wonderful group of sustainers works during the year to bring you several events where you are able to reconnect with friends and meet other sustainer members. This year we have partnered with Provenance Neighborhood to create a new fundraiser: The Junior League Pumpkin Patch.

In this inaugural year, the Junior League Pumpkin Patch will be mainly managed by our sustainer members.

We have many activities planned during the month of

October at the Pumpkin Patch, but we need your help to make it a success. We will have opportunities for you and your family to sign up for a shift. This is a great way to include your children and grandchildren that may need some service hours. It is also a great opportunity to dust off your Junior League aprons and create new memories while reminiscing about your previous placements or Revel and Rummage Sales shifts.

We will also have our first sustainer social at the Pumpkin Patch this year and I hope to see you there.

Please check League Links and your email in the weeks to come for more detailed information about the different activities planned. October will be an exciting month for us, but we are also excited about our other traditional events planned for the rest of the year: Past President’s Luncheon and the Sustainer of the Year Luncheon.

As our League leadership navigates the challenges of a new governance structure, I am convinced that we as sustainers play an important part by providing support to our active and provisional members. I hope that you will join me in supporting our League as a sustainer member this year by sharing your time, talents and/or financial support. Your help is appreciated by the many actives and provisionals that continue to move our mission forward.

Provisional Members

2016-2017

The 2016-2017 year brings with it exciting changes to the League, from the implementation of the new organizational structure, to two fresh Ways and Means events— Winter Wonderland and Clay Shoot. Also among all of the new, is a Provisional class full of bright, talented ladies who are ready to lend their time and talents to the community we call home.

The Provisional committee welcomed the new members with a fun-filled retreat at the Robinson Film Center on July 30. The slate of activities included information about the League and its history, Revel Pepsi sign-ups, mini-placements, and the chance to meet and hear from several Board members. The group also enjoyed playing trivia with The Trivia Guy, Jimmy Reed, complete with a round about the League. A representative from the Robinson also spoke briefly about the events put on by the popular entertainment spot.

The Provisionals also spent time getting to know the ladies within their smaller groups, as well as their individual advisor. This year’s Provisional committee is made up of Assistant Chairman Anna Brown, and advisors Hannah Alexander, Jennifer Cameron, Tara Jones, Liz Lafitte, and Allison Murray.

Along with the changes the League itself has in store this year, the Provisional committee is excited about changes we have made to the Provisional course. In the past, the ladies have attended meetings on each of the four councils. This year, those “core” meetings will be combined into two. This change makes room for networking and socializing events called Cocktails & Conversations.

In the past year we have learned that many of our Provisional members are new to the area, and crave not only a place to delve into the community and make their mark, but to create bonds and build friendships.

September will bring the group’s first Provisional meeting and the start of mini-placements for many. In October, the Provisionals will experience their first Ways & Means shift selling Pepsi at The Revel, while taking in the sights of the artists’ wares, sounds of bands taking the stage, and smells of tasty local fare.

This will be my third year working with Provisional members—I love meeting and getting to know all of our new members. Please be sure to offer words of welcome and encouragement to this group of energetic ladies as they begin their journey as members of the JLSB!

and Means

Each member’s Ways and Means obligation is vital to the overall success of the JLSB. This provides the financial support needed to fund our community projects and train our volunteers. There are several ways that Active and Provisional members can satisfy their Ways and Means obligation.

Provisionals can satisfy their $100 financial obligation by purchasing The Provisional Cookbook Package which includes JLSB’s three cookbooks, including Mardi Gras to Mistletoe, Revel, and A Cook’s Tour.

Provisionals are also required to work one 4-hour shift at Revel Pepsi or Revel Admissions AND work one 4-hour shift at one of the following fundraisers: Kitchen Tour, Winter Wonderland, 5k/10k Race, or the Clay Shoot or a second Revel Pepsi or Revel Admissions shift.

Actives can satisfy their $100 financial obligation by purchasing Cookbooks (JLSB or swapped cookbooks from other leagues), Kitchen Tour admission tickets, Winter Wonderland admission tickets, a yearlong sponsorship (1933 Society) or make a general donation to the League (in any combination). Note these purchases must be made on the JLSB website or in person at the JLSB office during office hours.

Actives in their 9th and 10th years of service (or greater) are only required to work one 4-hour Revel Pepsi or Revel Admissions shift.

Actives in their 1st through 8th year of service are required to work one 4-hour shift at the Revel Pepsi or Revel Admissions AND work one 4-hour shift at one of the following fundraisers: Cookbooks, Kitchen Tour, Winter Wonderland, 5k/10k Race, or the Clay Shoot or work an additional Revel Pepsi or Revel Admissions. Actives are offered additional flexibility with the option to ‘buy out’ a shift for $100 (deadline has passed) or complete a cookbook shift by making an assigned recipe for a specific JLSB event or working a cookbook event.

The League will continue several existing fundraisers including Revel Pepsi Sales at The Revel, Cookbook Sales, the 3rd Annual Kitchen Tour, and the 5k event.

JLSB members will also be given an opportunity to work the admission gates on the first Saturday of The Revel (sign-up will be in conjunction with Revel Pepsi shifts).

The annual 5k event will also include a 10k this year; the committee of runners is already hard at work and excited about the events potential.

Two new fundraisers are also being added this year, a family friendly Winter Wonderland event and a Clay Shooting event. Winter Wonderland will be held at Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club in Shreveport on December 4, 2016 from 2 to 5 p.m. The Clay Shoot will be held the morning of March 11, 2017 at Los Paloma in Benton.

Each members’ financial obligations must be satisfied no later than March 15, 2017. Your volunteer hours and financial obligations to the League are what creates a lasting impact on our community and makes our volunteers stronger!

A Partnership with Mooretown Elementary The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is so excited to return to Mooretown Elementary this school year. We are so eager to welcome back all administrative, teachers and faculty staff. Chancellor Gladney is thrilled to have the JLSB present to volunteer for another school year.

On August 11, the JLSB helped Mooretown kick off the school year with a back-to-school breakfast for teachers.

September will be a great opportunity to help serve at Back-to-School night and assist with greeting parents, selling school related items, and passing out dinner to parents and children. School supplies donated from the JLSB Membership will be presented to Chancellor Gladney to help with any immediate needs. Also on September 23, we will participate in a Million Fathers March to help support and encourage Dads at Mooretown Elementary.

In October, we will continue with the annual Jump

Start to Read program on October 27 and the Mooretown Fall Festival on October 28. It was such a great feeling meeting with Chancellor Gladney to get ready for another great school year. Last year proved to be such a successful partnership and we cannot wait to see how we can better serve and meet the needs of Mooretown Elementary for this current school year.

Volunteer opportunities will continue throughout the Fall and Spring. League Links will have the most updated information about these opportunities and requested donation items for general meetings. If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact me. Our continued partnership with Mooretown Elementary is so important to our community. Please help us provide support and spread the mission of the JLSB.

Miranda Weddleton & Jasmine Wallace The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier (JLSB) is pleased to announce Miranda Weddleton and Jasmine Wallace as its 2015-2016 scholarship recipients. Both were chosen for their academic achievements and service to their communities.

Miranda Weddleton graduated from C.E. Byrd High School this year with a 3.4 GPA. This fall she will attend Louisiana Tech University. She served her high school as part of Lyle’s Leaders and a Top Jacket and was a member of the 4-H Club, Astra Club, and Diamond Girls. She has dedicated 160 hours to volunteering with GREAT (Great Results Equine Assisted Therapies, Inc.), an equine therapy program for children and young adults with a variety of physical and developmental handicaps.

As part of her Girl Scout Gold Award, she became involved with the creation of an interactive herb garden

at Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Nature Park, where she designed, weeded, planted, and maintained the garden.

Jasmine Wallace graduated from Airline High School this year with a 3.8 GPA. She will attend Tulane University and plans to become a primary care physician. She has been a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Business Leaders of America, Girls State, and the Airline High School Newspaper staff.

She has volunteered with Volunteers of Youth Justice, Providence House, the Gingerbread House, and WillisKnighton Bossier. The community service project she is most proud of is when she learned to crochet and made 25 winter items to give out to the homeless this past winter.

The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier congratulates both of these outstanding young women on receiving the 2015-2016 JLSB scholarships and wishes them all the best for their futures.

Our Loyola College Prep friends and technology tutors have been greatly missed over the summer.

Summer Camp

Health Literacy Initiative

Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier members had a wonderful time this summer during the Health Literacy Initiative Summer Camp!

During this concentrated summer placement, the League partnered with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of America for the fourth year in a row. League volunteers had the opportunity to work with nearly 50 children ages six through nine. Each session included an educational topic, craft, and a snack. This year, topics included dental health, spending and saving money, stranger danger/traffic safety, fire safety, exercise, and nutrition. Community speakers who are considered experts in their field were invited to share their knowledge about these topics. We are grateful to the Shreveport Fire Safety Programs, the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Pediatric Dentistry of Shreveport-Bossier. The Tooth Fairy made a special visit and taught the children about the importance of taking care of their teeth. The Shreveport Fire Department brought a fire truck and allowed the children the chance to spray the water hose and climb through the truck. The children enjoyed a Zumba class, decorated a water bottle, and created a healthy snack during the session dedicated to exercise. Within our group of League

volunteers, we were fortunate to have professionals who also presented in their own field of expertise. Each League volunteer was responsible for planning and leading one session. Volunteers kept with the day’s theme when planning their craft and snack, such as decorating a piggy bank for the craft and making a “money tree” out of a snack of pretzels and grapes. Some of the more notable “kid favorites” included creating (and eating!) their own trail mix, designing their own bag to keep lost teeth in so the Tooth Fairy could easily find them, and learning about the proper food the body needs in order to live an active and healthy life.

Following the last session, each boy and girl received a gift bag. The bag contained items donated by the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, Shreveport Fire Safety Programs, and Pediatric Dentistry of Shreveport-Bossier. The bags also contained items such as playing cards, swim rings, a jump rope, and other small toys.

The children of the Boys and Girls Club of America and our JLSB volunteers found the Health Literacy Initiative Summer Camp to be both fun and very rewarding.

The ladies of the Junior League of Shreveport Bossier know that Fall has arrived with the kickoff of football and the Red River Revel. The Revel is right around the corner and we are currently preparing for our placement Artist for a Day (AFAD). AFAD at the Red River Revel Children’s Tent, has been an ongoing success for many years. Rain or shine, the children love to make crafts. Partnering with the Revel, we are able to reach an estimated 2,000 children during the week-long festival. Daily we bring free art projects for kids to help spark and inspire creativity. Our mission is to promote creativity and show children how talented they are while inspiring them with positive and encouraging feedback.

We have many crafts that children come back asking for such as Model Magic and Beaded Jewelry.

We keep the variety going by adding new crafts and changing them each day. Last year we introduced Rain Sticks which are mailing packing tubes with foil and rice inside to make the sound of rain. Each child can decorate them with feathers and designs, and

they love the noise. This craft will kick off our week, and new projects will be introduced throughout the festival such as canvas painting, finger puppets, rainbow fish, beaded jewelry, and keychains. According to The State of Obesity report, which is released by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Louisiana’s adult obesity rate is currently 34.9 percent. This is a significant increase from 22.6 percent in 2000 and 12.3 percent in 1990. In addition, it is estimated that 1 in 3 Louisiana children are overweight or obese.

To help combat the problem of childhood obesity, the Junior League started its Kids in the Kitchen initiative in 2006. The goal of this initiative is to educate children about nutrition, healthy meal choices, and physical activity as a means to foster a healthy lifestyle early.

Here in the Shreveport-Bossier area, the JLSB works to bring the same education and tools to our local youth through our Kids in the Kitchen initiative. As a project at the Red River Revel, JLSB committee members organize a program that impacts thousands of fourth grade students who attend the Children’s Day Program as a field trip through their schools. During this week, Junior League members produce an entertaining program that educates

the students about the importance of good nutrition and physical activity to create an overall healthy lifestyle. The children participate in a fun and engaging game show that compares healthy food choices to poor ones, learn how to make a healthy snack, and discuss their favorite ways to exercise. In addition, every child receives a jump rope and recipe book to take home and share what they learned with their parents.

This year, the Kids in the Kitchen Revel committee will work to combat childhood obesity through a fun program at the Red River Revel October 3 – 7!

It is hard to believe that we have already started planning for fall festivities and annual events. Even though the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier’s year has just begun, the Kitchen Tour Committee has been hard at work throughout the summer planning the 3rd annual JLSB Kitchen Tour! The Kitchen Tour has quickly become a wonderful addition to the Junior League of ShreveportBossier’s fundraisers. This year’s Kitchen Tour will be held on Saturday, October 29. It is an event that is great for anyone remodeling their home, kitchen or is looking for a fun way to support the community and JLSB! The Kitchen Tour will feature some of Shreveport’s most beautiful recently constructed or remodeled kitchens. We are again partnering with the Home Builder’s Association to select kitchens that showcase a variety of styles. This self-guided tour is perfect for anyone who is seeking ideas for their own home design project or simply appreciates the workmanship of true artisans. SB Magazine’s October issue will feature the selected kitchens in an exclusive spread. This spread is the largest donation that SB Magazine offers any community partner.

Kitchen and Bath Cottage will again serve as our home base for the tour. Brunch is a fabulous way to kick off the day with girlfriends before starting the tour and will be hosted at Kitchen and Bath Cottage from 9 to 11 a.m.

The official tour takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and we will announce the raffle and grand prize winners from 4 to 5 p.m.

I am also thrilled to announce the addition of a VIP Kitchen Tour Package. The VIP package will include the price of a brunch and tour ticket. Additionally, VIP guests will be privately transported to each home in a shuttle stocked with refreshments and champagne. VIP participants will also receive a specialty gift and swag bag.

The Kitchen Tour Committee has worked throughout the summer building on the successes of the previous two tours and planning another great event.

Anna served as a Provisional Director, mentoring and guiding new JLSB members through their busy and exciting first year in the organization. Anna “has gone above and beyond the job description of her placement this year, and according to those who have served alongside her, she has been a joy to work with,” said past president Lila Knicely. “She has a great attitude and has been dedicated to ensuring that our League’s provisional members have the best League experience possible.” The new members Anna worked with agree that she “put 110% into her Junior League position” and that she is an “encourager” and a “go-getter” who always has a smile on her face. Super Safety

It is hard to believe that Super Safety Saturday is right around the corner! The 7th Annual Super Safety Saturday, hosted by the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier and Sheriff’s Safety Town, will be held at Sheriff’s Safety Town on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. We hope that you will join us for the fun and festivities!

Super Safety Saturday is a free event combining family fun with educational activities found in our four Safety Pit Stop areas: Touch a Truck, Health & Safety Fair, Family Fun Zone, and Sheriff’s Safety Town. The first 500 children to visit and participate in all of the Safety Pit Stops with their supplied “Pit Stop to Safety Pass” will receive a fun goody bag at the end of their visit!

Touch a Truck is a must-see for the little ones! At Touch a Truck, cool vehicles of all kinds will be on display for children to experience first-hand. Get a close-up view of tractors, rescue vehicles, heavy equipment, recreational vehicles, a bookmobile, and even a helicopter!

Booths at our Health & Safety Fair will provide interactive experiences and important information to adults and children about a variety of topics including healthcare, wellness, and safety for everyday activities. This year, the Health & Safety Fair will feature demonstrations promoting safe sleep, drowning prevention, fire safety, motor vehicle safety, and suicide prevention.

The name says it all at our Family Fun Zone! Enjoy a cold treat from Happy Belly’s and listen to local entertainment at our Family Fun Zone! From fitness classes to special appearances by kid-friendly characters, you will not want to skip this Pit Stop!

Sheriff’s Safety Town gives you the opportunity to explore! Visitors can learn about severe weather in the Fire and Weather House, which will be open for tours every 30 minutes. The Safety Town child-sized neighborhood helps children learn the “rules of the road.” Children are encouraged to bring their own bike and helmet for a ride through the Safety Town neighborhood. A free child seat safety fitting will also be held on-site, courtesy of the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s office.

The League began its partnership with Sheriff’s Safety Town in 2008. In celebration of the JLSB’s 75th anniversary of serving our community, we donated $75,000 to assist in the construction of this unique educational facility in Caddo Parish. The funds were used to construct an outdoor pavilion in the Safety Town neighborhood. Since that time, the League has enjoyed hosting Super Safety Saturday as a way to stay connected with this wonderful facility and provide a free and fun educational experience for the members of our community.

Cookbook Recipe Honey Garlic Pork Tenderloin Ingredients: 1/2 cup creole mustard 1/2 cup honey 2 tablespoons lemon juice 8 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons pepper 2 pounds pork tenderloin Honey-Creole Sauce: 1/2 cup creole mustard 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup honey 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Directions: Marinate and roast the Pork: Mix the creole mustard, honey, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper in a large shallow dish or resealable heavyduty plastic bag. Add the pork and turn to coat.

Cover or seal tightly and marinate in the refrigerator for 3 to 10 hours, turning occasionally; drain.

Place the pork on a lightly greased rack in a foil-lined roasting pan. Broil 6 inches from the heat source for 5 minutes. Roast at 425 degrees for 25 minutes or until a meat thermometer inserted in the thickest portion registers 160 degrees. Let stand for several minutes before slicing.

Sauce: Mix the Creole Mustard, mayonnaise, honey, lemon juice and pepper in a bowl until it is of a sauce consistency. Serve the sauce with the pork.

At the May Dinner Meeting, outgoing president Lila Knicely announced Amy King and Ashley Rudd as the 20152016 President’s Award recipients. This award is coveted for the person or persons that the President believes truly embodies the spirit of the Junior League.

The first recipient of this award is Amy King, the JLSB’s office manager. Lila Knicely, 2015-2016 President said, “There isn’t anything Amy can’t or won’t do to help ensure that everything runs smoothly throughout the League year.

She has helped our head volunteers prepare for countless community projects as well as practically serving as an additional committee member for every fundraiser from Kitchen Tour to Spring Market. Amy keeps meticulous records and keeps every aspect of our League Headquarters in order. She has cleaned up after roof leaks and changed out ceiling tiles—she is really quite handy. To make a long story short, there really isn’t much that Amy hasn’t done this year and I am beyond grateful to her for that, because without her, none of what we have accomplished would have been possible.”

The second recipient of this award is Ashley Rudd, an active member of the JLSB who served this year as Parishscope Editor. Knicely said, “Over her League career, Ashley has created the first JLSB promotional booth at the Spring Market, helped develop the concept for the ‘I am JLSB’ video, and re-organized the Parishscope Business Manager placement to make it more efficient. Those who have worked alongside her describe her as someone who is ‘super Type A, fiercely loyal, and who believes wholeheartedly in supporting other women.’ This year, Ashley became a new mom, to a preemie no less, but she has managed to maintain her uncompromising work ethic, her great attention to detail, and her sense of humor.” Knicely highlighted Rudd’s “willingness
