When I found out my placement for the 2013-2014 League year, I could not have been happier. I have worked as a freelance writer, editor, and blogger for the past five years, so to say that editorship of the Parishscope is right up my alley is an understatement! It’s an honor for me to take the helm of such a high-quality publication that reaches not only our active members and sustainers, but also the community.

Past editors Jennifer LaPierre and Emily Nickelson, along with their predecessors, have done a terrific job, turning the Parishscope into a fun, informative, and highly professional magazine of which our League is exceedingly proud. My goal this year is to maintain that high level of quality, find ways to improve and streamline our processes, make it easier for League members to contribute, and find more ways to make the Parishscope an effective tool in promoting the JLSB within our community.

President

As it always does, summer has flown by, and its conclusion brings the commencement of an exciting new League year. Many of us take summer vacations, and for anyone traveling with children, the sentiment, “Are we there yet?” is a common refrain. I heard those words repeatedly on our family’s summer vacation, and my answer was usually the same: “Not yet, but we’re closer than the last time you asked!” or the slightly more sarcastic, “If we’re still moving, we’re not there yet!” As an organization, the JLSB has undoubtedly made our community a better place to learn, live, and work.

Although our 80 years of service have produced exceptional programs with measurable impacts, we must continue to identify and meet the needs of our community and our members.

Are we as a League “there yet”? No, but we continually make great strides to better our community and our members who live and serve in it. The positive impact we make is a testament to the caliber of women who choose to become active members and sustainers. If all we were looking for as members was a place to volunteer, our options would be many. What sets a League member apart is that she desires formation of friendships, a comfortable environment in which to learn, opportunities for networking, and the desire to develop herself and offer her expertise to teach and develop others—all in a fun, nurturing atmosphere.

Are we as individuals “there yet”? Certainly not. One of the most wonderful benefits the League offers is constant training, either through education workshops, formal training, guest speakers, conferences, mentoring, or development received through a placement. Take advantage of every opportunity you are offered this year.

Eagerly accept a challenge when you can—chal-

lenges have the potential to grow you like nothing else can. Every placement is important and offers a growth opportunity. Have fun getting to know other like-minded women and find inspiration knowing the impact we make. One leaf does not offer much shade, but many leaves together provide cool rejuvenation. Likewise, our impact is much greater as an organization than what any of us could achieve alone. The League is a catalyst for continuous personal development if you actively engage with each other and in your placement.

Over the summer, I have had the privilege of working with many of our League leaders and volunteers as we plan and strategize for the year ahead. I have come to appreciate what a talented, energetic, intelligent, motivated group of women comprise the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier.

As our 80th Anniversary celebration winds down, it is hard to imagine our community without the JLSB. For 80 years, the JLSB has continued the mission of our original 98 members. Through their time and talents, members over the years have led the way in creating a better community, inside and out. Are we “there yet”? Not yet, but we’re closer than we have ever been. Last year alone 239 women contributed 16,554 hours of volunteer service resulting in the equivalent of $366,505 donated to our community, specifically targeting families at risk. I encourage you to get involved this year as we stretch ourselves in giving and serving to propel the League into the next 80 years.

The Law Office of Flowers and Long, LLP is pleased to announce the addition of their associate attorney, Sarah Margaret Smith (Provisional), and would like to welcome her to the firm and the Shreveport-Bossier legal community.

Morgan Trahant-Lang (Provisional) was voted one of the top orthodontists in Shreveport-Bossier for 2013 in SB Magazine.

Currently, she is the only female orthodontist in Northwest Louisiana.

Ellis “Elley” Blaire Wilkinson was born on January 27. She was welcomed by proud parents Laurin Wilkinson (Active) and Ben and big sister Brinkley.

On Mar. 4, Katherine Douthitt (Active) and her husband, Jeff, gave birth to a baby boy, John Cook Douthitt, whom they call Cook.

Daphne Mijalis (Active) and her husband, Alexander, welcomed their third child, a baby girl named Evangeline Margaret “Evie” Mijalis, on April 15. (photo 2) In May, Ebony Mikle (Active) was awarded the Red Apple (Excellence in Education) award at Atkins Technology Elementary for increasing her students’ academic achievement and decreasing their behavioral referrals. In August, she was also appointed the 5th grade chair for her grade level for the 2013-2014 school year. (photo 3)

In June, Krystle Beauchamp (Active) joined the staff of the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana as Director of Development.

Bridgett Bushnell (Active) and her husband, David, had a baby boy, Harper James, on July 31. He weighed 9 pounds, 12 ounces and was 22 inches long.

Ellen Erwin (Active) and her husband, Clay, welcomed their first child on August 12.

Trigg James Erwin was born at 2:40 p.m. weighing 8 pounds, 1 ounce and measuring 21 inches long.

Come relax and reconnect with ladies of the Junior League for fellowship and news on what our organization is busy with this year. Mark your calendars and come when you can.

career/occupation: Registered nurse/Clinical Liaison for LifeCare Hospitals What made you decide to join the Junior League? Did your mom’s experience have a positive impact on you?: She was the main reason I joined. My mom was in the Junior League as long as I can remember! I have seen her over the years make wonderful friendships that were started while she was in the League. I also see how she has remained so active volunteering in the community long after she became a Sustainer. I love hearing stories of what the League was like when she was an active member!

What has been your favorite aspect of League membership?: Working with groups of women who share a desire to volunteer and make a difference in our community. I love seeing all of our hard work come together and go toward a good cause.

What is your placement this year?

What are you most looking forward to about it?: Advisor. I am very excited about my placement this year, and I think it will be a great way to meet more League members and see all different aspects of the League. For the past three years, I have served on the Market committee, which I loved, but I think it will be fun to experience the League in a non-concentrated placement!

What would you say to your daughter if she asked you why she should join the Junior League?: Oh, I would tell her absolutely! I have loved my time in the League and most of all loved sharing such a fun experience with my mother as a Sustainer! It is a great way to get involved in the community, make a difference, and meet some wonderful women! Nothing would make my mom happier than to see her granddaughter in her red JLSB apron selling Pepsi at the Red River Revel!

What is one of your best memories as a League member?: My 1995 placement as the Red River Revel Chairman was one of my favorite League memories. Kip Holloway took me up in a scissor truck and we went above the Revel site. We looked over the entire Revel and saw wall-to-wall people. Such an exciting moment to see all of our hard work paying off.

What was your favorite placement?: All of my Revel placements; I continue to serve on the Festival Production Committee 20 years later.

Did you hope that your daughter would one day join the JLSB?: Yes, I had so many fond memories of my 13 years in the JLSB and hoped she would serve in the community as I did.

What is it about the Junior League that keeps membership relevant to generations of women?: It is a great way for women with common interests to give back and improve our community. jlsb.org | Fall 2013 Parishscope

Provisional Members 2013-2014

The beginning of fall marks a new season for so many. School is back in session, Saturdays are filled with football, and the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is celebrating a new Provisional class. Hard to believe it’s that time of year again! It is an exciting season, and we warmly welcome our new members who will help the League continue its tradition of “promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.”

The provisional members will be guided by an exceptional group of provisional advisors, Mollie Chelette, Maria Frank, Erin Leigh Garrett, Whitney Gates, and Julie Richardson. The Provisional Leadership Team, along with Assistant Provisional Chairman, Shelli Murphy, planned and presented the JLSB Provisional Retreat on

August 10 at East Ridge Country Club. This was the first opportunity for provisionals to see and hear the impact the JLSB has made in this community. A full day of activities included teambuilding games, Revel Pepsi sign-ups, community placement information, and an opportunity to hear from the JLSB Board. New friendships were forged and commitments were made that will only grow over time.

One of the many benefits of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is the diversity of the women who give their time and talents back to the League and the community; this year’s provisional class is no exception. Lawyers, nurses, doctors, non-profit professionals, teachers, entrepreneurs, and public relations specialists round out what is sure to be a dynamic group of women.

They are excited and ready to start serving alongside you in the community.

Summer Camp

Health Literacy

Health Literacy Initiative Summer Camp began a new partnership this year with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Ten Junior League volunteers worked with over 50 fourth- and fifth-graders each Tuesday and Thursday for seven weeks. The JLSB volunteers planned a lesson, craft, and snack pertaining to a different theme each day. Throughout the summer, the program welcomed speakers from The Swim School,

Shreveport Police Department, and Shreveport Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Unit, who spoke to the children about water safety, stranger danger, and fire prevention and safety. We also hosted a fitness instructor from the YMCA to teach the children a kickboxing/aerobics class. We incorporated a few new topics this year, like teaching the children about table manners, being respectful, and saving money. The JL volunteers and the children of the Boys & Girls Clubs enjoyed the new partnership.

Launched in June 2011, the Health Literacy Initiative promotes healthy lifestyle choices to school age children. The Health Literacy Summer Camp takes place twice a week throughout the month of June. This year, we were thrilled to present the program at the Boys & Girls Clubs summer program.

By Caroline Young, Feature Writer As the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier continues to grow and flourish, it is a rewarding experience for members to look back on the many projects and programs that we, as a League, have created to help improve the community in which we live.

In 2008, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the JLSB, the League made a $75,000 donation toward the construction of a pavilion at Sheriff’s Safety Town, which works to ensure that all members of our community are knowledgeable and aware of various safety issues. This pavilion became the hub of Super Safety Saturday, an annual event that offers safety education to hundreds of children from the Shreveport-Bossier area in just one day.

Super Safety Saturday’s mission is “to raise awareness of safety issues and educate the public on specific safety concerns affecting children.” Sheriff’s Safety Town’s aim is “to protect children by teaching safety skills and allowing them to practice those skills in a safe environment.” With two such similar goals, both organizations clearly put the safety of our children first and foremost. As unintentional injury stands as the leading cause of death in children ages one through four, the JLSB felt that this project would be one that could make a significant difference in the lives of the members of our community. Similarly, because involvement with the community is such an important part of the Junior League, members felt that this emphasis on safety and healthy living, especially in the lives of children, could make a great difference in the Shreveport-Bossier area. Since the project’s start in 2010, hundreds of people have attended Super Safety Saturday, a safety clinic that benefits those that live in our community, hosted by Junior League members at Sheriff’s Safety Town. Free to anyone who wants to attend, Super Safety Saturday provides a wealth of

information about a myriad of topics to parents and children in our area.

Different stations at Super Safety Saturday provide a variety of information to participants.

Adults brush up on driving safety and are refreshed on railroad and pedestrian rules. Children and parents benefit from reviewing bicycle safety. Children who bring their bicycles and helmets can pedal through Safety Town to experience bike safety rules first hand.

The proactive knowledge of understanding “stranger danger” and how to dial 9-1-1 both significantly benefit children. In addition, booths provide information on gun safety, proper nutrition, water safety, study skills information, Internet safety, and dental care, just to name a few. Parents can also learn how to properly install a car seat and receive information about Shots for Tots. The first 500 children to visit all of the designated safety areas with their supplied “Pit Stop Safety Pass” will receive a goody bag.

League members play a role in Super Safety Saturday by running different stations and activities. In addition to running the educational and informative safety booths, League members are responsible for the Touch-a-Truck feature, Health and Safety Resources, and the Family Fun Zone, which includes bounce houses. While Super Safety Saturday is designed to be informative, it is also fun!

Super Safety Saturday head volunteer, Lecie Israel, and her committee have been working tirelessly to make this year’s Super Safety Saturday the best yet.

Lecie says the committee feels a special obligation to represent this particular event as JLSB members because “this event is the single largest one-day event where we, as an organization, give back to the community.” With such a variety of events, booths, and fun, those in attendance are sure to enjoy themselves.

day

I have many fond childhood memories of the Red River Revel, especially spending time at the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier’s Artist for a Day tent. I can remember creating wire sculptures, sand art, and mosaic tile murals. Those childhood memories were a strong influence on my decision to join the JLSB and on choosing this placement.

My goal for this year’s Artist for a Day tent is to continue the tradition of providing opportunities for children to create art, form strong, positive memories of this fabulous art festival, and maybe inspire a future JLSB member.

The Artist for a Day tent invites all children attending the Red River Revel to stop by and create masterpieces utilizing different art techniques and mediums. The Artist for a Day tent is open from 4-8 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. Each day, a different guest artist and medium are provided by the JLSB free of cost to children.

The JLSB wants every child to have an opportunity to experience the joy of creating an original piece of art.

2013 of several popular projects such as Emily Shaumberg’s Shaving Cream Art, Kimberly Searcy’s ModgePodge, and Mark Burt’s Model Magic Monsters, while introducing one or two new art projects with Kelly Wiggins. We also plan to hand out Art Project Cards with the art materials and instructions for that day’s art project. These will provide the children with guidance to replicate the art projects at home.

Mark your calendars for Oct. 5-12 and make plans to come down to the Festival Plaza for the 2013 Red River Revel. While at the Revel, make your way to the Children’s area and come create art and memories with the JLSB volunteers at the Artist for a Day tent.

Volunteer of the Year 2012-2013

Deidre Rollins

As head volunteer of Between the Lines, Deidre Rollins did an incredible job and showed outstanding leadership skills, pioneering the Junior League’s new community project that strengthens bonds between incarcerated parents and their children. Under Deidre’s leadership, Junior League volunteers visited Bossier Medium Security Facility on four occasions and recorded more than 65 inmates reading books to their children. Deidre thoroughly prepared her volunteers and maintained close contact with them throughout the project.

Between the Lines’ inaugural year was highly successful. Over 100 children received a giftwrapped book and CD recording of their parent reading the book to them along with a personalized message at the end. Providing comfort in times of parent/child separation and promoting literacy, this project is one that Deidre is thankful to have led. She is thrilled the project is continuing during the 2013-2014 League year and is lending her support as an advisor to its new volunteers. Thank you so much, Deidre, for your hard work and dedication!

When I began thinking about the qualities I would look for in the recipient of the President’s Award, I thought about those of a servant leader.

A servant leader listens, has empathy, is persuasive, has foresight, has stewardship, and builds communities.

During my tenure as President-Elect and President, I have witnessed all of these qualities in these two ladies. They have quietly, tirelessly, and without fanfare served the JLSB. They are both humble servants who are great leaders!

The Junior League’s Scholarship Program recognizes graduating female seniors in Caddo and Bossier Parishes who are dedicated community volunteers, good students, and are admired by school administrators, community leaders, and ministers. The outstanding recipients of this year’s $1,000 scholarships far exceed the program’s requirements.

Grace Ann McCurdy, a 2013 graduate of Loyola College Prep in Shreveport, maintained a 4.17 GPA, led several school organizations, and was co-captain of the varsity cheerleaders. She has demonstrated her commitment to voluntarism by serving as an officer in FAiTH (Flyers Aiding the Hungry), leading vacation bible school at St. Joseph Catholic Church, taking mission trips to Jamaica and South Dakota, and devoting more than 250 service hours to our community while participating in projects such as the Kiwanis Club Coat Drive, the Cinderella Project Dress Drive, Operation Support Our Troops, and Providence House.

Cassidy Horton, a 2013 graduate of Airline High School, maintained a 4.0 GPA and was one of three students accepted into the prestigious Science and Medicine Academic Research Training (SMART) Program as a researcher. As part of the SMART Program, Cassidy spent 700 hours over 11 months at the Biomedical Research Foundation at LSUHSC searching for cures to serious illness. Cassidy is an active community volunteer with The Hub (a ministry for the homeless) and KidZone children’s ministry at First Bossier. Cassidy’s passion for serving others extends internationally, as she co-founded the Dignity Project (www.daysofdignity.com), which provided 6,000 girls in Kenya with sanitary supplies, hygiene education, and hope for their future.

In partnership with the Association of Junior Leagues International, the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is again able to offer a series of educational opportunities to the membership through AJLI’s website.

Through online workshops, webinars, selfpaced courses, and on-demand recordings of previous presentations, Junior League members can access these leadership tools at their own convenience. These offerings serve as valuable opportunities for members to continue their professional development as leaders in the community at a pace and time that fits their individual schedules.

Beginning in October and continuing through May, AJLI will launch its yearly series of “Webinar Wednesdays.” Each webinar is offered on the second Wednesday of each month and is one hour long. These sessions focus on community and civic leadership and engagement and are designed to appeal to all members of the League. Previous webinars are available for download.

Members can begin the self-paced course entitled “Building Leaders and Blazing Trails: Changing the World with The Junior League” at any time.

This one-hour, four-session course explains how the Junior League empowers its members to take advantage of opportunities for community leadership and personal growth and development and demonstrates how the League supports members making a difference in their communities.

The Issue Based Community Impact Series units are one-hour on-demand recordings also available to League members. Each unit pertains to a different aspect of working within an issue-based approach to sustained community impact, which is foundational to the Junior League’s mission. The units are designed to help Leagues and volunteers focus their efforts and build strategies to maximize their impact.

In order for JLSB members to access these exciting educational opportunities, they must log on to AJLI’s website, www.ajli.org. First-time visitors must register with their JLSB Member ID, which is located on each member’s personal profile page.

October 10, 2012 Dr. Jacqueline Rivas: Volunteering Around the World: Is It All the Same?

This Webinar will bring volunteers in the Junior League closer to what other volunteers around the world are doing.

Concepts, ideas and trends in volunteering in other countries will also be presented as well as compared to the United States.

Jackie is a researcher on volunteering in Mexico, a country she has lived in for over 50 years. Her experience in the Junior League of Mexico City was key to developing an understanding of the importance of this activity in the Mexican context. As an advisor in Civil Society matters to the current Mexican President’s wife, Maragarita Zavala and a member of the Global Philanthropy Committee of the Council on Foundations, she will share her years in the volunteer scenario and her international knowledge as well as the information that has come through her current investigations. jlsb.org | Fall 2013 Parishscope

Communit y Advisory Board The Community Advisory Board (CAB) is an innovative and effective approach to provide a bridge between the Junior League of ShreveportBossier and the community. The CAB is comprised of volunteers from diverse backgrounds who each share a common interest in the League, its projects, and improving the community in which we live. Members serve to promote and foster greater dialogue, education, and understanding between the League and our community.

The JLSB thanks its Community Advisory Board members for their service, especially Bess Elder, who has served since 2007 and is rotating off of the CAB this year.

Bess Elder has been a wonderful asset connecting the JLSB with the needs of our military community. She is married to retired Lieutenant General Robert Elder, former Commander of the 8th Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base, and has served as chair of the board of directors of SB Squared, as well as on the boards of Catholic Charities and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC). She also works as a coach for Louisiana Association for Nonprofit Organizations (LANO) helping local nonprofit boards improve their governances. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and a masters degree in counseling from Louisiana Tech University.

We also extend thanks to our returning CAB members: Sonja Bailes is the public relations liaison for Bossier Parish Schools.

She worked 20 years as a broadcast journalist and news anchor before transitioning into public relations. She serves on the Salvation Army Advisory Board and the Bossier Parish 4-H Advisory Board. She has also served as assistant to the president of the Shreveport Journalism Foundation and as chair of the sponsorship committee for the Bossier Parish Community College 100.

Richard Corbett is a lieutenant in the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office and program director for Sheriff’s Safety Town. He has served on the boards of the Kiwanis Club of Southern Hills-Shreveport and the South Shreveport Business Association. He was named “Distinguished Graduate” for his academy class, is a graduate of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce’s Greater Shreveport Leadership Program, and is a 2009 “40 Under 40” honoree. He was also named the Kiwanis Club of Shreveport’s 2011 Lawman of the Year. He has a degree in criminal justice and an MBA from Centenary College.

Dr. Tom Harrison is the executive pastor at Broadmoor Baptist Church, serving on the church staff since 1981. He currently serves as chairman of the board of trustees for New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and as a member of the 2020 Vision Committee for the Louisiana Baptist Convention in addition to serving on the board of directors for the Mexican Indian Training Center. He holds a B.S. in education from Baylor University, a master of divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and he returned to New Orleans to receive a doctorate of ministry in discipleship in 1993.

Jim Henderson is the chancellor of Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC). Prior to becoming chancellor of BPCC, he was the senior vice president for career and technical education at the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.

He has also worked for the Louisiana Department of Labor and, prior to that, spent 15 years in executivelevel management roles in the private sector. He has bachelor’s degrees in journalism and English, a master of science degree in human performance technology, and a doctor of management from the University of Maryland. He has also completed the Institute for Educational Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Shelly Taylor is president and CEO of the Louisiana Association for the Blind (LAB). She serves on the board of directors of the National Association for the Employment of People Who Are Blind (NAEPB) and as VP of the Operations Committee.

She is also chairman of Ethics, a BSC committee member, and a member of the Commercial Business committee. She is a member of VisionServe Alliance and Rotary International. She earned a B.A. in liberal arts, magna cum laude, from LSU and an MBA from Centenary College. In 2010 and 2012, she was honored as a nominee for the Greater Shreveport and Bossier Chambers of Commerce’s ATHENA Award.

Peanut Butter Bread 2 cups flour ½ cup sugar 1 tsp salt 3 tsp baking powder ½ cup peanut butter 1 ¼ cup milk

Sift flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Mix the peanut butter in with fork. Add milk and bake in loaf pan 1 hour or more at 300 degrees.
