OUT & ABOUT REEL WOMEN’S MOVIE MARATHON Planned Parenthood’s first-ever Reel Women’s Movie Marathon: Real Women, Real Stories was a huge success! Held in October 2014 at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs, the event raised nearly $9,000 to support Planned Parenthood’s breast health programs in the Coachella Valley — all made possible through the generous support of our donors and volunteer committee, spearheaded by Eileen Stern. The event concluded with a Q&A with Jeralyn Brossfield, M.D., and Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest Board Chair, R. Elaine Hanson, M.D.

GET TO KNOW THE REAL PLANNED PARENTHOOD In November 2014, Kathy and John Allavie hosted an event at their Riverside home called “Get to Know the Real Planned Parenthood”. Guests had a chance to learn from Board Chair Elaine Hanson and Medical Director Kelly Culwell, M.D., about the comprehensive range of reproductive health care services, education outreach, and community engagement activities Planned Parenthood offers in Riverside. A few weeks later, our Riverside Health Center staff hosted several donors for a tour of the facility.

WORDS FROM DARRAH & ELAINE It seems as though the loud rhetoric filling the airwaves and print and social media is getting more extreme and inflammatory, even when we are talking about something level of health care. On occasion, our Riverside County health centers see protestors outside voicing their opposition to a woman’s right to access birth control and abortion.

We have to wonder why this is an approach so many are taking. Not only are these loud conversations obnoxious, they don’t work.

As people who have worked for Planned Parenthood for many years, we have seen firsthand that meaningful conversations happen when people engage in respectful dialogue. These conversations don’t have the fireworks that we see on television.

FOUNDATION NEWS We received $50,000 from the Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation to support family planning and increase access to birth control services. The Walter J. & Betty C. Zable Foundation seeks to continue the legacy of the founders by encouraging and promoting health, science research, assisting with programs that benefit youth, underprivileged individuals, and sports-related activities.

We received $5,000 from PPFA to continue the Promotores Breast Health Program, working with Latino communities in the Imperial Valley.

As of press time, several exciting proposals for funding are pending with the state of California, The California Endowment, and Susan G. Komen San Diego, among others.

We welcome Kersten Deck as our new director of institutional giving! Kersten was previously associate director of major gifts, and has worked at Planned Parenthood for seven years.

Thanks to all who made our debut with the Riverside County Give BIG event a success.

Held annually in November, Give BIG is a 24-hour online charitable giving event designed to inspire people to give generously to nonprofit organizations in our own community, organized by The Community Foundation. Nearly $2,000 was raised to fund Planned Parenthood programs and services in Riverside County during Give BIG, which also inspired support from new donors in the region.

OUR HEALTH CENTERS IN RIVERSIDE COUNTY AND BEYOND Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest has 19 health centers throughout its three-county region, five of which are located in Riverside County. Patients receive high-quality care at our centers in Moreno Valley, Coachella, Rancho Mirage, and family planning and specialty services centers in Riverside.

Planned Parenthood is proud to open the doors of its first health center in the Imperial Valley this spring! Through the hard work and determination of several supportive partners, a building in El Centro has been transformed into an ideal health center. This 6,500-square-foot facility can accommodate up to 30,000 patient visits annually. Staff worked with a leading architectural design firm and contractors, including some local contractors, to create a health center that focuses on patient-centered design, and will usher in a new era of care to a region that has shown significant growth and need.

The building also features a 1,500-square-foot area to be used as an administrative office, which will provide ample meeting space for our community and government relations staff, Promotores providing education and outreach, and countless volunteers.

Significant supporters of this project include K. Andrew Achterkirchen, Pat Wilson and Greg Rose, Sheryl and Harvey White, and several anonymous donors.
