What’s New in the Red Cross Office…

OCTOBER 2011 Naples, Italy

This month the Red Cross has been busy helping out our community - both on base and off! We have been busy working on the Shelter on the Spine (SOS) event that went off so well, partnering with the military disaster services unit, the Red Cross DAT (Disaster Action Team) and the SET (Special Events Team) to raise awareness of disaster sheltering for the Naples community and raise funds to go toward the Navy Ball. We partnered with NSA volunteers to sell hotdogs, chips and drinks for that cause in the first week of October. We also have been moving forward with the Emergency English program, meeting with the Italian Red Cross to sign the program agreement and get our syllabus confirmed. We will definitely be beginning that program in November, on Saturday the 5th! The Red Cross Capo office has also been working hard talking to volunteers about all the leadership positions available. We have many exciting opportunities and hope that volunteers and community members will take advantage of them. Please review those leadership To volunteer for any upcoming events, or for specific volunteer opportunities on page 3 if you’re opportunities, please call our office—we’re always looking for interested in volunteering! volunteers! see page 3 & 4 for specific opportunities

Disaster Action Team “Shelter on the Spine” event By Lewis Heuermann, DAT Chair This week, we held “Shelter on the Spine” at Capodichino, where we sold hot dogs and gave tours of a mock disaster shelter. What an event! Thank you all for showing such great enthusiasm and showing the community what a sheltering experience will be like. Your hard work and encouragement made today a very fruitful day for the DAT. Along with several members of the community, we made contact with the Regional Disaster leader and the Chief of the Fire Department who will let us know when there are fires. We also met the manager for the Emergency Department who was excited to have the Red Cross as a part of their response team. In addition to all the above our Special Events team, headed up by Virginie Silva and Gillia Lambert, raised over $480 for the Navy Ball! What a great accomplishment!!! Check out the pictures of the event on the following page. M A R K

Update from our Station Manager: Jacquie Mack

Hello Naples Volunteers, October is a good month for all military and DOD personnel to think about Disaster Preparedness and what better way to start it off than with our "Shelter on the Spine" presentation being held Tuesday, Oct. 4th by our DAT Team. This is an excellent opportunity to view an actual shelter operation and see your American Red Cross at work during a simulated disaster. It is always important to be prepared when a disaster strikes and we are hoping this will get personnel stationed here in Naples to form a plan to care for themselves and their families if the need should arise. Also this month, the Naples Red Cross office will be participating in the Fire Prevention event being held at the Support Site on Saturday the 15th. This is a fun event for adults and children alike so come by and pick up information on how to prevent house fires and what to do should one occur. At this time we are currently accepting applications for the Dental Assistant Training program. This program is a wonderful opportunity for individuals to gain experience in the dental field and receive top-notch training all at no cost to the participant. This training is open to family members of our military and DOD community with valid ID cards. If you know of anyone interested in more information please have them contact the office. The training is scheduled to begin on the 24th of this month. Submitted by Susan Miller on behalf of Station Manager, Jacquie Mack
