OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION DESIGN AND PROJECT PHASES

INTRODUCTION THE 24th CSU California is planning to build their 24th CSU in a new location with current CSU’s being overcrowded and more people trying to gain access to higher education. The 5 proposed campus locations chosen for the next CSU to be built were Chula Vista, Concord, Palm Dessert, Stockton, and San Mateo. The five locations all have potential and would greatly benefit from a new campus being built in the location as it would drive their economy.

Some factors that planners look into when trying to pick locations include areas that have low transfer rates from community colleges due to commuting to a faraway CSU or University of California campus.

One major city that would benefit greatly from the new CSU being built there would be Stockton.

Once known for a gateway to gold rush locations, Stockton suffers from the great financial crisis and filed for bankruptcy in 2012. This led to an economic downfall and many citizens of Stockton to be place bound.This itself made Stockton a great candidate to build a new CSU campus in order to drive the city’s economy. Not to mention that Stockton already had a CSU Stanislaus satellite campus to build off of.

DESIGN PROCESS AND PROJECT PHASES As a class we broke into groups and started off researching how to design a campus masterplan. We spent the first few days looking into designing campus and masterplans before designing our individual buildings on one fo the five proposed new CSU campus locations. This allowsed us to understand the complex process we have to go through to build a campus that is succesful and encourages collaboration and connection within the community.

From this we moved on to individual building project that is part of a greater picture of our campus masterplan. I was assigned the CSU Concord campus and chose to design a recreation center on this campus.

The second half of the winter quarter was when we transition as a class to design CSU Stockton together, as our base location to design for. A new masterplan for Stockton was developed along with assignments of partner and building of choice. My partner Gabrielle and I got to design the academic building of Climate Science and Global Understanding.

HISTORY

DEMOGRAPHIC

Concord is the largest city in Contra Costa Country and the 8th largest city in the San Fransisco Bay Area with a popoulation of about 130,000. Founded in 1869 by Salvios Pacheco, Concord was a former coal mining site. Formerly called Todos Santos, Concord was a large agricultural area. My site is now a naval weapon base abd former wheat farm.

Concord is a city with beautiful nature and a rich history.

The demographic in Concord is majority white at 46.32% followed by the second largest ethnicity being hispanic at 32.26%.

The naval weapons station functioned as an armament and strorage depot during World War II. Concord had came up with a plan to re-use the land for development while maintaining the wide open spaces for parks.

The average household income is $85,275 in Concord whilst it has a poverty rate of 10.71% with black population having the highest poverty rate. The average earning for students with a high school grad is $ 32,000 while students with a bachelors degree would earn $61,790.

The highest rate of high school graduation is among white people at a rate of 95% while the highest rate of bachelors degrees is among asian people at 51.17%.

Some of the most popular majors are dental assisting, medical assiting, and general administrative assiting and secretarial science.

The most popular transportation method is driving alone at 70.1%. Most people commute to work and the rest either carpooled or use public transit. The public transit is highly underused and underutilized.

The most common jobs in Concord are office and administrative support occupations followed by sales and related occupations. Other common jobs include management jobs, food preparation and serving, and building and ground cleaning.

Concord has hot summer Mediterranean climate with mild to cold . The strongest wind comes from the south direction with average annual precipitation value of 18.1”. The Summer sun angle we want to be mindful of is 85 degrees while the winter sun angle we want to let in the building is 28 degrees. The air quality in Concord is good therefore outdoor activities and designs are encouraged. There is a tule fog from Mt. Diablo to take into account.

DEMOGRAPHIC

Before the European settlers were in California, the Yokuts, a group of Native Americans, were living in the Stockton area. The arrival of the Europeans killed off many Yokuts, while many others were forced into the missions. When gold was discovered in California, Stockton was one of the booming economic centers for commerce. The city of Stockton can trace its roots back to Charles M. Weber, a man who serviced gold miners in the area and founded Stockton in 1849 with a land grant from the Spanish.

In a city of 311,189, Stockton city is a very ethnically diverse city. The largest demographics being Hispanic or Latino ( 40.7%), followed by White at 21.5% and Asians at 21.8%. As seen on the graph in Figure 1, females aged 25-34 are the largest demographic in poverty. The median household income and per capita income in Stockton is lower than all of the USA with 20.5% of individuals below poverty level.

Today, Stockton continues to serve as a major shipping point for Northern California and has become a center for agriculture. 312,000 people now call Stockton home. In 2012, Stockton became the largest city to file for bankruptcy during the financial crisis. The city is still seeing the lasting effects of the recession as many people have fled the city to different areas of California for work and there is still a high poverty rate in the city.

Out of all the residents in Stockton. Only 5.8% are attending college and 17.7% are college graduates while 76.4% are high school graduates. The number of high school graduates to college graduates and currently attending college are disproportionately uneven, showing that many of these students don’t continue to pursue higher education after highschool.

Most people in Stockton work in offices, administrative support, sales and management occupations. With this in mind, Stockton is a caroriented city where many workers tend to commute to their jobs especially with Stockton’s lack of alternative transportation choices.

Stockton has a hot-summer mediterranean climate with mild winters and dry summers. The prevalent wind comes from the West direction and the sun angles we would want to pay attention to is Summer at 79 degrees while Winter is at 34 degress. Stockton receives an annual average precipitation value of 17.1 inch.

DESIGNING FOR THE FUTURE There are several reasons why higher education is very important for the future of the students and at larger scale the future of a city or even a country, Higher education serves as a tool to allow students to obtain the skills to pursue a career of their choice.

Depriving access to something as basic as higher education can indirectly harm the economy of a city as well as deprive a household from being able to increase their household income even with student-loan and other payments taken into account. In addition to that, it is for the individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personal development to develop skills they otherwise would not have developed just from obtaining a high school degree (e.g. communication and critical thinking skills). It also gives a chance for them to pursue a passion of their interest that a high-school degree might not allow them to.

It is important to create a space where higher education is viewed as a welcoming space, creating space for exchange of ideas and exchange of knowledge as well as learning each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perspective while maintaining a safe space. These are all very important in creating a succesful space for higher education. The lack of resources to fund the erection of new institutions as well as the shifting views on education is slowly reducing public funding for education. This forces colleges and univerisities to increase their tuition to be able to close the gaps which in turn makes education less accesible.

OUTREACH INTERVIEW To know more about Concord and the surrounding area as well as to learn more about CSU East Bay satellite campus, I interviewed a local from the area. Aaron James Capinpin, a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student, who currently lives in Clayton but used to live in Concord. Moving around the Contra Costa County, his family chose to settle down at Clayton which is also very near the current CSU East Bay. His family moved to Pittsburg because that was where his grandparents immigrated to from the Phillipines. After raising enough money, his family moved out of Pittsburg and into Concord and later Clayton. Aaron did not go to CSU East Bay because the campus was very small and he wanted a full college experience on a campus where he can interact with other students of his age while most students of CSU East bay are adults who are seeking a degree. He says that a well designed program and a nice surrounding campus area makes an ideal campus to go to.

Having a new CSU campus in Concord will help the economy as more people from outside the area will come to the city and bring in diversity. I asked Aaron how the transport system is around the area mainly from the county to San Fransisco and the local county public transport. He said that most people commute to their jobs and the bus system in Contra Costa County is not really used as often. The BART system is what locals use to go from San Francisco to Concord. Many people who work in San Fransisco likes to stay in cities such as Concord where life is less busy and more suburban as well as property prices being cheaper.I showed Aaron the location of the proposed Concord Campus (by the Naval Weapon Base) and asked how the traffic will be affected by a new campus being built there.

Since the campus is located near one of the busiest freeways, a new campus there will definitely cause traffic especially during rush hours where people are commuting from and to work. Having the new CSU campus being a non-commuter campus will benefit the area better than if it were a commuting school like the current CSU East Bay is,

Through watching Michael Tubbs, the mayor of Stockton, present on Ted Talk along with following the narrative around Stockton,I’ve learned that the history of Stockton and redlining of neighbourhoods really affected how Stockton is structured today. Michael Tubbs keeps in mind the question “who is our neighbour?” reminding everyone that whether it be someone who commited crime or not, they are still people of your community and how most of the time, the perpetrators were once the victims. Keeping this in mind, the “destiny of the city is tied by everyone” and that if Stockton was structured the way it is now like Jericho Road is designed for violence, then we should take action and fix this structure to be able to provide a harmonious community.

Further into research, only 31 juniors and 200 seniors took the SAT in 2019. However in 2020, The Gates Foundation paid for all students of Stockton to take the SAT. It was already an issue that some schools don’t offer A-G courses which are required to go to college. Parents are sending their kids to high schools that wont bring their kids to colleges. To add to that, 11,000 of the students in Stockton are homeless and depend on school facilities to open up at 4am for the students to shower. With this in mind, the CSU campus brings hope to attract higher wages to the area.

Currently , the parents of Stockton has established a carpool system to encourage students to go to school. The lack of daily attendance is affecting the funding of the schools as the funding values depends highly on attendance levels. The lack of Stockton’s public transport that is safe and easily accesible made it hard for students to go around Stockton if they had no car as Stockton relies heavily on their cars.

OUTREACH AND FURTHER RESEARCH

SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY We visited San Jose State University as a field trip to learn more about campus masterplanning as well as look at the types of buildings and design choices that were made by the planners and architects. Through this field trip, we agreed that SJSU is a very pedestrian friendly campus although located in an urban setting. The campus did a great job to create the borders for the campus without making it a harsh border that cuts off the campus from the city.

I liked the green spaces the campus has although not a lot of people walked over it like we do in CalPoly. I especially liked the outdoor spaces outside the student union as well as the study spaces inside the union where the mateirals used were very purposeful

STANFORD UNIVERSITY We visited Stanford University to look at their campus and planning. At first glance we realise there is a consistent cladding material used on every building, a beige colored material. The campus was a very bike oriented campus where everyone travls via bike to classes, it is almost scary to walk around as one of my friend almost got hit. The campus is so large that it would be faster to bike thant to walk. They also have an on campus bus system that can bring them off-campus. Most of their green spaces were not meant to be occupied or are barely occupied.

The world of university and higher education is a constantly changing. ‘Today, U.S. colleges and universities enroll more than 20 million students, an increase of 8 million since 1980 largely due to an increase in available graduate programs. Students today are a more diverse group than ever before , however, with the increasing price point and lowering budget of higher education the current landscape of the modern university might be in store for a major shake-up.

HOW MIGHT WE DESIGN FOR A GROWING AND CHANGING CAMPUS? . "More education is happening out in the field through immersive experiences and technology. This will cause campuses to fundamentally rethink their physical assets," says Traci Engel Lesneski, who led the team at Minneapolis architectural firm MSR, which designed the award-winning Visual Culture, Arts and Media (VCAM) building at Haverford College, in Pennsylvania. More and more campuses are leaning towards constructing “flexible” buildings, with an areas that are not singularly designated by traditional programs. With the establishment of common core in K-12 , higher ed is trying to catch up to a new wave of learning.

They are less focused on traditional lectures and isolated study and more on blended and online learning and collaboration. According to the New York Times article, “The Innovation Campus: Building Better Ideas,” by Alexandra Lange, innovative campuses are those that try to facilitate a pipeline to the real world. The future of higher education is not a campus that seeks to isolate its students from the community they reside in but to create and extension of the community.

Facilitating this major change is not necesarily easy. eas The advent of the online college and increasing budget cuts of public education has made universities increasingly hesitant to spend big money on expansive structures that might be made obsolete in the near future. However, as research and new ideas develop, the future of the college campus lies squarely in its ability to adapt the new climate it finds itself in

HOW MIGHT WE CREATE AN INCLUSIVE CAMPUS FOR ALL STUDENTS AND CULTURE?

The importance of campus diversity is a mainstream narrative among most institutions of higher education, yet the reasoning behind this importance remains largely understated or unconvincing outside of the academic world. A study by Nicholas Bowman on College Diversity Experiences and Cognitive Development found that found that informal, interpersonal interactions among students of variant races had larger positive effects on cognitive development than interactions among students of different class, gender, and other non-race factors.

The Bay Area's population is ethnically diverse: for example, roughly half of the region's residents are Hispanic, Asian, African American, or Pacific Islander, all of whom have a significant presence throughout the region. However, the wealth gap in the geographic area remains considerable, with the top ten percent of income-earners taking home over eleven times as much as the bottom ten percent. In addition to race, class diversity is also an important factor in maintaining a healthy campus environment. In Bowman’s study he also found that socioeconomic diversity does indeed benefit all students and that both racial and socioeconomic integration work in tandem to enhance and optimize outcomes related to racial diversity. diversit

HOW MIGHT WE CONNECT TO THE COMMUNITY OF CONCORD?

No college campus truly exists in the middle of nowhere. There is always a community and outside context the college must connect to in order to create an intergrated experience. There is a balance between isolating the student population from the larger city, or making the campus an integral part of the city. In each case there is a threshold experience that must be crossed, whether its by car, bus, train, or by foot. Each of these methods carry a different experience that must be considered.

In the case of Concord, a new California State University campus on the site would include integration with the expansive Concord reuse project. The 5,000 acre former inland Naval Weapons station is zoned to create a new central hub zone for the city of Concord.

For the new University, the question aks, how do we integrate into a community in a place that does not yet exist? By working with transportation systems that easily circulate from hubs of population to the campus threshold, we can easily make an inclusive campus that does not stand out from the rest of the city but elevates the conditions of the city of Concord.

HOW MIGHT WE DESIGN A SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS?

In a world affected by climate change, creating a campus that makes as little environmental impact as possible is not only a priority but a necesity. Colleges and Universities are huge population centers and has a large footprint on the land it sits on. By optiizing daylighting, heating, cooling, and greenspace, campuses can become a place that gives back to the environment rather than takes away from it.

California is a national leader in pushing for its construction to be sustainable and by 2030 aims to reduce statewide omissions by 40% as well as all new constructions must produce at least zero-net carbon. By designing the univerity we these goals as the minimum, the campus can not only be sustainable but can also be inspirational.

HOW MIGHT WE... (CAMPUS MASTERPLAN)

How might we change the narrative around Stockton by creating a safer campus that integrates into the community?

Finding a balance between creating connections without any harsh boundaries but also providing a sense of safety is important when designing the edge condition of a campus. This also affects the overall security of the campus and how the campus is perceived by those outside.

How might we provide students and the community with resources to better their education and empower them to learn?

Designing a space that encourages students to collaborate and gather can help facilitate the interaction between student and the surrounding community of Stockton. Placing buildings near the appropriate resources also encourages this idea.

How might we create a sustainable campus that utilizes green accessible transportation and regenerative properties?

To strive to design for net zero should be a goal all campus try to attain especially with THE 2020 and 2030 goals to curb impacts of climate change. Investing in green energy and aiming for net zero will require a longer payback time however, be more sustainable in the long run.

How might we design a regenerative building that promotes sustainability?

How might we facilitate interactions between students in different majors and encourage collaboration?

PROJECT AND DESIGN GOALS Through our design, we focused primarily on serving the students of Stockton and their involvement in working towards solutions for climate change. This meant that we chose programs that would allow for a fusion between environmental law and science, while allowing students to be a part of saving the planet. One of the ways we did this was by creating labs focused on climate issues such as waste, wildfires, and air quality. Different levels of interaction are also encouraged in the building through the lecture hall, solo study pods, group study pods, conference rooms, and social space surrounding the central atrium. We also provide outdoor spaces for the students and community, including amphitheater style seating that can be used as a social space, a presentation space, or nighttime movie viewing space. Students are reminded of sustainability through the use of visible solar panels on the windows, free sustainable material pods, and a sustainable clothing store/ DIY center.

WHAT MAKES A MASTERPLAN SUCCESFUL? We started off our masterplanning by doing a charette to set out our â&#x20AC;&#x153;How Might We...â&#x20AC;? goals for the future campus we are designing. We wrote our overlying goals on sticky notes and grouped them into 5 larger topics that we want to focus on.

Through this process we obtained our vision and goals for the campus masterplan. We had previously looked at succesful nolli maps of other campus and their planning and discussed how we could incorporate these planning ideas and our goals together.

We also did contextual resesarch as well as set our goals for the city we worked on. Keeping these in mind help us make a fruitful campus masterplan that is true to the vision of the group and the team. We used the nolli maps as our precedent and combined a few ideas together. We also looked into Sasaki designs and masterplanning to learn more from the professionals.

LEARNING FROM OTHERS

Carnegie Mellon is a private residential research university with about 14000 students. It is a relatively old university, established in 1900. It has lots public green spaces. There is a sense of orthogonal design, which provides organization, but also utilizes walking paths cutting throug the campus, for ease of movement.

MIT is an urban residential campus established in 1861. The campus is situated along the Charles River and is divided in half by the Massachusetts Ave. It is a private research university with 11 574 students. The campus plan is laid out and shaped by the streets of the city allowing easy access to transportation.

UC Berkeley is a public residential research university with about 41000 students. It is a staple part of the Bay Area, being established in 1886. It is well integrated into the city. It also has a variety of sports arenas and performing art spaces that are utilized by both the school and the community.

Columbia University is a private university that was established in 1754, located in Manhattan. It is a residential campus and has a total of about 27000 students There is a good public transport system in the city for the students to get around the city.

There is a clear grid within the campus that allows easy and efficient navigation.

Syracuse University was founded in 1831 and is a private university located in the heart of New York State. It is a residential campus and has a total of about 15000 students. The campus is on a hill but it is still easily walkable, there is also sufficient transport within the campus that includes buses.

UC Santa Cruz is a public residential research university with about 19000 students. It has easy access to the forest, ocean, and town. The campus is somewhat spread out; however, there is an established system of paths throughout, allowing for high walkability.

HKU is a relatively new university established in 1911. It is a residential campus focusing on public research and situated in Hong Kong Island with 22 514 students.

A University District is created by linking communities to maximize sustainability.

The layout of access points encourages a car-free campus.

University of Arizona is a public research university with about 43,000 full time students. It is a residential campus. The campus is broadly divided into quadrants.

They expand into the neighborhood with some campus housing. The gridded campus makes it easy to navigate.

Yale University is a private university that was established in 1701. It is a residential campus and has about 12000 students. The streets that run along the campus are wide for easy vehicular transportation. It is also mostly flat, making it easy to get around by walking.

The proposed location of the new CSU Campus by the naval weapon base already had a proposed zoning of the surrounding area. By designing a centralized entry road with designated quad areas. Our site is located by the freeway exit as well as a BART station. The academic buildings are gathered around the two quads towards the right and the housing are located at the two ends of campus, one by the entrance near the mixed use retail and other by the citywide parks, allowing some options.

The programs that we would want to block off noise from the campus area such as the stadium is placed on the outermost north corner of the campus. A transport hub on the middle north is also situated to allow students to travel out into the city or even to San Fransisco. A main axis is used to designate the vehicular traffic in campus and reduce car usage and encourage more pedestrian friendly routes throughout the campus.

We started off with the pairs making a campus masterplan for stockton with a base map. Gabrielle and I noted down the existing buildings and infrastructure we want to keep on site. We then zoned out the areas of where we want the cluster of buildings to be. We then gathered as a studio to agree on where things should be and where we want our main vehicular routes to be. We then placed our individual buildings onto the masterplan we agreed on.

This was the step where we left off for the end of winter quarter where we established where the main buildings are, our projects relative to the other as well as the adjacent buildings. We also established the quad areas on campus that we want to maintain. The main vehicular roads are obviously shows with the tape too.

We developed this masterplan after moving the PAC and commons to different locations. The commons being non-parasitic from the existing building and the PAC located closer to the transit center towards the downtown.

There are several clusters of housing distributed on the different quads on campus. The health center is situated on the north end near a local clinic.

This was the final masterplan with some buildings relocated. We removed the stadium and moved some of the housing to accomodate to where we would want students to live in adjacent to. The integrative recreation center is designed to bring the campus community and the community around concord together. The integration of multiple programs (such as labs, dance studio and a rentable recreation center) in addition to the recreation center. There will also be studying lounges for those students who want to work together at a location. The form overlooks the dining space and the residential area on respective sides allowing easy access for students to come in and our of.

Creating a new California State University in Stockton would mean providing jobs for thousands of people, giving the population access to higher education, and providing hope for the community that they can overcome their current hardships. The campus we have designed is focused on reviving the urban center of the city through interaction between the community and university.

The climate science building is located on the south center of the campus in the scientific hub.

FORM DESIGN CONCEPT Our building was designed to be part of the circulation between the Data Science and AI academic building. We are the intemediary indoor circulation path for stusdents who want to travel from one building to another. That was how we came upon the form as we arranged the programs around that path.

ACADEMIC DATA SCIENCE

Stockton, California is a city of 300,000 people an hour south of Sacramento. The city went bankrupt during the 2008 recession and as a result there are high crime and poverty rates. Students in Stockton come from very diverse backgrounds, with ¾ being students of color. The lack of an access to higher education is prevalent in Stockton because students are “place bound”, meaning they cannot leave Stockton to get a higher education for numerous reasons. Their options for college are limited to the local junior college, San Joaquin Delta college or Pacific University, an expensive private college.

To allow the building to breathe and bring in natural light, we made designed an atrium to fulfill that design goal. We then pushed and pulled our form to create outdoor spaces as well as respond to some of our interior spaces such as relaxing pods by our atrium area. The outdoor spaces created allows collaboration outdoors for those who prefer it.

PROGRAM DIAGRAM AND STRUCTURAL DIAGRAM PROGRAM DESIGN Our program starts with the most public programs on the first floor and the more generic programs such as labs and classrooms on the upper floors.

Followed by those, there is an environmental law center for people to do research and ask questions about climate change and the law surrounding it. Our four regenerative labs are also located on the first floor for people who are interested and have easy access to these rooms.

We also designed some collaboration spaces for different numbers of people under the atrium. Around the atrium space, we also placed some waiting or relaxing spaces for people who are waiting to go to class or rest after coming out of class.

Social Spaces

STRUCTURAL AND FACADE We chose heavy timber structure with CLT decking to make sure that our building is sustainable and environmental friendly. We try to reveal the structure/ expose the ceiling where possible to keep the warm aesthetic.

Our cladding system includes using white terracotta panels and red terracotta louvers to shade the unwanted sunlight. We also included solar panels on the roof top to try and achieve zero net energy.

In addition to that, some BIPV were used around the egress to generate extra energy though less effective than the roof.

Where needed (such as east side), large glazings were used to bring in light with solar performing tinted glass.

We designed our building to be sustainable in different ways. By putting solar panels on our roof, we strove to reach net zero and produce negative values to be able to allocate most of the energy for other facilites such as the recreation center and the health center that might require a great amount of electricity. By creating an atrium we can make use of stack ventilation which exhausted through our operable skylight roof. We also made use of radiant floor heating system and passive chilled beams for our heating and cooling system. Our facade also is designed to reduce solar heat gain by blocking off summer sun angles but allow winter sun to warm our building.

REFLECTION FOR DOUBLE QUARTER

REFLECTION This double quarter experience has taught me how to work remotely and be more dilligent with setting a workspace and setting my work time. Working with a partner remotely actually allows me to set my work boundaries and help me keep myself in check and help each other balance our work flow. Gabrielle and I like to do our own mini charettes which help us come up with ideas, we stay on calls like we would be in studio (seeing each other became our work time) to make sure we dont get distracted and make us feel more productive. I think that I managed to find a balance between studio work and my daily life (at home) even with the quarantine and the stress of the pandemic. I learned to be more flexible and creative with my approaches when doing my work. Overall, having Stacey as a professor made this experience much easier and we were all acquainted to zoom calls as a studio so the transition was pretty seemless.

Having learned revit in 2 quarters with the aid of our studio mentors and one-onone sessions helped getting in-dept as well as a variety of opinions and ideas. The occasional firm meetups was also very useful for us, especially when we had creative blocks. The BIM360 cloud system despite itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s complications was a lifesaver for me to experience a collaborative work and also practice great communication skills with my partner. Overall, this quarter was an eventful,educational and fun experience. Thank you Stacey and my studio for making it happen!

The twins Boop and Beep are going to college soon. The new CSU Concord is going to be accepting enrollments to their new campus that promotes a sense of community and focuses on providing an integrative student experience. Boop wants to learn Kinesiology as Boop loved exercising and understanding the human body's movement. Boop seeks a place where Boop can have easy access to the equipment that will aid in the educational process. On the other hand, Beep aspires to be a varsity basketball player who also likes to participate in extracurricular activities such as dancing. Recently Beep was injured so Beep needs to get some physical therapy for a while before being able to participate in more physical activities. On their down time, Boop and Beep likes to go take yoga classes and meditate to keep their mental health and well being healthy. A space that could allow both Boop and Beep to be able to meet new people with the same interest and feel like they belong.

ATRIUM MODEL

ENERGY ANALYSIS From lab 1, I talked about using overhangs to shade summer sun and allow winter sun to enter the space and heat up the area. The square footage changed from lab 2-4 to this because we eventually figured out the appropriate size for the programs and we have two separate buildings with different systems causing the increase in square footage. This also led to the increase in EUI at 165kBTU/ft^2/year (compared to my lab 4 that was 118kBTU/ft^2/year at ~80000sf) while the target EUI is 81kBTU/ft^2/year (on 2030). The dominant load is the heating load just like the one in lab 4 and the solution was to use passive cooling systems. I shaded used overhangs on the South side of the building and want to use louvers on the east and west side. We have narrow floor plates and windows on both south and north side to allow cross ventilation from the northwest wind. Our building shape is also elongated on the East-West Side. These were all the things I mentioned on lab 4 that would help with the design. The increase in square footage increased the eui compared to lab 4 hence the increase in value. The choice of using passive chilled beams and radiant floor system should help reduce the EUI by lowering the heating and cooling load. There would be significant lighting load when looking at the daylight analysis and this is something I should fix moving on with my project (narrower floor plates). Glazing on the east west has to be shaded.

Rainwater will be collected at the roof and direceted towards our rainwater harvest lab which is also located near an underground rainwater storage tank.

POWER We will utilize a campus powerplant that will provide power for most of the academic building due to the high demand for electricity. There are also PV panels on top of the roof that stores energy in the grid.

ANNUAL ILLUMINANCE The annual illuminance is not even. There are some areas are very dark with low ranges(0%-20%), while majority of the space ranges from 75%-100%. The higher the illuminance level, the better. lighting equipment will be very useful to light up the dark parts (towards center of floor plates). a lot of energy will be used to light the parts that are dark. Creating an atrium will help with the dark parts in the building and spreading light across the floorplates.

DAYLIGHTING ANALYSIS DAYLIGHT FACTOR This form provides uneven lighting in the building. Some parts dont receive enough sunlight on the worst case scenario.

The uniformity ratio of this form is 0, this means that the lighting in the building is very uneven with some parts really bright and others really dark.This will drive the shading device designs as the angles will affect the daylighting factor ratio. The minimum daylight factor is 0% while the average daylight factor is 4.6%. A higher uniformity ratio will mean that lighting is distributed more evenly in the building.

I've created narrow floorplates in the design in hopes of creating more even distribution of lighting however, this does not seem to be thin enough to allow that. It is evident that there are benefits to elongating the building the east-west direction increase exterior wall area and the glazing I put increasing daylight coming in the building. Using climate based building facade, you can reflect unwanted light and shaded glazing (in my case using vertical louvers on the east and west side).

OVERLIT AND UNDERLIT

The building has a SDA of 71%, which is below the desired SDA value but near 75%. It has a low ASE value of 21%. This is still high though higher than my lab 4 value. To fix glare and overheating, a shading device is important to maintain the SDA value and reduce the ASE values of my building. To reduce the overlit parts, possibly creating a larger atrium and testing out a different geometry will help reduce the overlit areas. I've applied shading on the south side.

The first floor has majority of underlit areas.
