In such uncertain times, I’ve managed to find solace in the close exploration of cactus plants I have access to.

Studying these hardy specimens adapted for some of this nation’s most challenging desert landscapes has broadened my awareness of and gratitude for the privileges I enjoy living amidst the famously moderate atmospheric climate in San Francisco.

Long, sparse, dark colored spines.

Also known as the “Teddy Bear Cholla”.

Placed in antique painted terra cotta pot from a local crafter.

Also known as the “Jumping Cholla”.

Repotted from plastic container into dark green glazed pot.

Large, approx 40” tall.

Planted in large terra cotta pot with painted blue bottom and salmon colored rim.

Approx 4.5” diameter.

Center globular stem with six smaller globular stems. In green and brown ceramic dish.

Approx 6.5” wide and 3.75” tall. Multiple globular heads surrounding one main head. Placed in glazed terra cotta pot.

Also known as the “Ladyfingers Cactus”.

Multiple elongated stems. May need repotting in the near future. Placed in wooden planter.

Around 2” wide by 2” tall. Later found rot in plant. Cut away about 60% of plant and repotted in ceramic bowl with two tone bottom and green rim.

Four plants acquired, ranging 4” to 4.75”. All in plastic pots. One has smaller double head and multiple seedlings.

Main stem is exposed giving plant a high profile appearance. Tag indicates plant may be from border region.

2 - 3 layers of tubercles.

Dull colors. Might be mislabeled from vendor. Located in round ceramic dish with three others.

Small, single stem, approx 2” wide by 2” in tall. Located in oval shaped, light brown bonsai pot.

Approx 4” wide by 4” tall. Twisted and curved spines. Located in short earth tone pot.

All the text within this book is set in variations of Hatch, a typeface designed

by Mark Caneso and released through ps.type.lab - an independent type foundry that also functions as a custom lettering department for Caneso’s broader creative agency ppwrk studio based in South Carolina.

This contemporary slab serif typeface family is emphatically horizontal yet remains playful through its implementation of rounded corners on the letterforms throughout. Overall, the font is an absolute joy to use, with each weight meticulously spaced and in compatible hierarchy by default.
