ATYPICAL STORAGE Archive for Cummins Inc.
With the world of artifacts, documents, images, and data expanding at an inconceivable rate, this project considers the means by which architecture can embrace the storage of vast collections of various media, not only as a necessary element of program but also as rich formal and conceptual ground. As such, the project undertakes the design of architecture that performs like furniture, having its efforts divided between storing stuff and accommodating bodies.
The atypical archive presents a nested provocation: how does one house a collection within an interior and how does one join an established urban collection in a site?

THE AVAILABLE CITY: Floating Houses
This housing project is located in the midst of high rise luxury apartments in the River North area of Chicago. As an aggressive intrusion into the wealthy neighborhood, the complex floats on top of Erie Café – an existing single story restaurant that stretches along the river walk.
The name of this project <The Available City: Floating Houses> comes from the 2021 Edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial which aims to transform vacant spaces into collective spaces in downtown Chicago.

IN ZENITHAL LIGHT: Museum for the Work of Richard Diebenkorn
This project explores the experience of architectural space in zenithal light—of inhabited rooms on the ground illuminated by natural light coming from the sky above.
The Richard Diebenkorn Museum, proposed to be sited in Berkeley, California, directly to the north of the University of California campus, will house the works of a single artist, Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993), one of the most important Abstract Expressionist painters. The studio program has been developed in cooperation with the Richard Diebenkorn Foundation, and follows precedents of museums dedicated to a single artist, most importantly the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. The 100 paintings and 8000 works on paper held by the Diebenkorn Foundation, as well as a selection of paintings donated and loaned by museums and private collections, will constitute the new museum’s exhibition collection.
The museum will also provide a venue for exhibitions of the work of the San Francisco Abstract Expressionist school; the artists who taught them, including Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still; the artists who inspired Diebenkorn, including most notably Henri Matisse; as well as contemporary works of painting and architecture inspired by Diebenkorn’s works.

DANCE COMBINATIONS: House of Metamorphosis
Architecture is a discipline that forms spatial conditions and choreographs human movement. Its origins of influence arrive through creative processes – drawing, writing, modeling, and speculation. This project investigates the communication between architecture and the allied arts through exploratory exercises.
Among other visionary forces, I worked in collaboration with dancers, studying the translation of movement, light, and form as an act of reading. I explored the gap between the real and the imagined, the form/function dualism, and the relational networks that define the context of the project.

Analyzing the cloud of points gave hints to the dimension of the space between the roof and the dome of the Charola hall. The ceiling of the Charola hall is completely covered with paintings and masonry pillars that it was nearly impossible to identify the presence of any hidden elements above the ceilings.
It was possible to estimate the thickness of the hidden space as 3.5 meters by measuring the distance between the intrados of the dome of the Charola hall and the ground level of the roof.
The roof is primarily composed of main and secondary diagonal rafters and joists originating from the central king post, tied together with horizontal beams and purlins. The entire timber roof is supported by a thick stone masonry wall at the periphery and eight masonry columns circled around the geometrical center and aligned to the ornamental columns of the Charola room.

Digital Ceramics

At the turn of the century, the Hydraulic Press Brick Company in St. Louis was the most innovative brick company in world, producing one hundred million bricks per year by 1900. The abundance of clay and the affordability of bricks contributed to the longevity of building stock where even modest homes had ornamental bricks, corbeling, recesses, and extensions.
Historically, fired clay building components were valued for their strength, modularity, fire resistance, raw material availability, and aesthetics. Ceramic building units are pervasive in their use in the built environment, but have been underappreciated in contemporary architecture practice.
This project examines new possibilities for masonry and ceramics in architecture by merging digital fabrication and analog craft for the design and production of non-standard ceramic components in aggregated assemblies.

CYBORG The New Body
Intercalated by three different componentry, this jewelry is embedded in the body as hearing aids.
As an extension of the human body, the parure imitates the auricle in both its appearance and function. The organic outer layer protects the inner machinery that transfers sound to the tympanic membrane of the ear. Coarse texture derived from outer cutaneous tissue juxtaposes the polished skin of modern-day machinery.
As a hybrid entity, it encourages patients to come forward with their flaws and em-brace their uniqueness as individuals. This parure challenges the notion of able-bodied versus disabled in hopes of dismantling the social construction which imposes vulnerability on us.
