In rural Burkina Faso the literacy rate is around 25%. The Library in Gando was funded by ‘Schulebausteinfurgando’, targeting this issue by creating an inspirational building that would inspire learning. It will not only be a place to store books but it will provide internet access and a place to study. The building was built in two parts. The first phase (completed in 2012), Guinea is the inner core, it is a circular structure that allows air to flow through openings in the ceiling. The second phase involves building a facade that will both provide shelter and a seating area that wraps around the building. The innovation will Liberia be to create the facade from local eucalyptus wood which has never been seen as a suitable building material in Burkina Faso.
