R

egardless of the subject, Joyce’s work reveals a tug of war between realistic and abstract elements. This conflict usually results in the background breaking up or challenging the foreground.

The texture and contrast of color in the paintings is achieved through the rapid application and detraction of oil with knives - a technique she developed in her endeavor to add immediacy and freshness to the work. Extreme variations of texture accomplished through the manipulation of the paint enables her to inject emotion and empathy for the subject. Her paintings evoke that which is universal, yet personal.

Joyce continues to explore other methods to enhance the painting surface and also experiments with encaustic wax.

Although her work is always transforming, the need to bring the human element to the work remains constant and her desire to pull emotion from the viewer vital.

he Jazz Age. It was an era of ballyhoo and bee’s knees. Of hooch and high stepping. And, in a country tired of WWI, a time for breakout new music – jazz – to fuel the fires. Jazz giants shaped the sound. Earl Hines, Mary Lou Williams, Roy Eldridge, Kenny Clarke, Billy Eckstine, Erroll Garner, Art Blakey, Billy Strayhorn and more made Pittsburgh in the 1920s and 30s one of the most prolific times and places in American music.

The Speak Easy. Welcome to a world of sipping sidecars and shimmying slide trombones. We mean hot cornets with cool brunettes. And a mix of Bix, Basie & Bessie too.

In Pittsburgh, everyone knew a place. You know, that spot to wet your whistle.

A friendly speakeasy. A corner “blind pig” establishment to put the right “twist” in your day. We had literally a thousand of them. ...And we had almost as many concoctions that served the purpose. Sidecars and Gin Rickeys. The Highball and the Old Fashioned. French 75s and Mary Pickfords. And, of course, the Corpse Reviver to start the next day over right.

The Fashion. The Jazz Age was more than flappers, it was a fashionable fusion of flexibility and function, accessorized with flair. Gentlemen entered the “modern era” with an eye toward automobiles, aeroplanes and a sleek style that saw “tails” shorten to tuxes and suits cut closer to the body. Collars were turned down and Fedoras with wide bands ruled. Cloche hats and the bobbed cuts were in. What else was new? The cocktail dress, a French innovation for an American clientele who wanted to go from afternoon into the evening cocktail hour with as little fuss as possible. Matching hat, gloves and shoes and the perfect little glass of something.

I

n 2016, Women of the Club (WOC) started informally with the goal of making female members of the Club feel at ease dropping in to meet colleagues over a drink or a meal.

With the backing of Club management, Colleen Pietrusinski and Penny Zacharias started holding casual monthly get togethers. A few friends meeting over wine or a bite to eat in the Reading room.

As word spread, WOC grew beyond anyone’s expectations and these small gatherings turned into themed events where everyone was welcome, men as well as women and guests.

Participants enjoyed spirit tastings, chocolate making, holiday décor workshops, defense classes, behind-the-scenes Club tours.

Eventually, a bold idea took hold. What if this informal group hosted an event to give back to the community and make a difference in the lives of women in crisis?

With the seed of an idea and the full support of the Club, the WOC dove into creating an unforgettable evening to benefit United for Women through the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Over a year later, the result was Tale for All Time: The Gilded Age. On February 28, 2020, nearly 200 guests were taken on an immersive theatrical experience presented by Bricolage through four floors and 17 rooms of the Club.

The timing was fortuitous.

Just two weeks after the inaugural Tale for All Time, the first pandemic lockdown shocked the nation. Funds were suddenly and critically needed to help women and families manage through the unexpected crisis.

In 2022, the WOC still operates without a roster of membership. There is no board of directors, no written bylaws.

Only a group of women committed to creating a welcoming atmosphere for all and determined to help improve the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors through events like Tale for All Time.

In 2022, WOC members and guests have already celebrated over sushi, crepe making and a live performance by the Pittsburgh Opera – look for future events online.

o much has changed since our streets buzzed with sounds of Jazz punctuated by countless whistles signaling the end of yet another shift. The decade of the 1920s also saw the dawn of modern philanthropy, a commitment by corporate leaders to provide a more coordinated approach to addressing poverty.

From these early charitable campaigns emerged what is now United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, mobilizing the caring power of individuals, businesses, and organizations to serve the needs of people across five counties.

This holistic approach to meeting essential human needs has never been more critical. Last year through United Way’s 211 human-services hotline, we received more than 135,000 requests for assistance. Nearly 6 in 10 come from women who are experiencing food insecurity, facing homelessness or can’t afford to keep utilities on.

The pandemic only made the situation worse for financially struggling women, especially mothers raising children with few options for childcare. Today, women are far more likely to face food or housing insecurity and live one unexpected car repair or health issue from long-term crisis.

United Way helps navigate women through times of personal economic crisis and works to get them on the road to more solid financial footing.

That’s why this evening is about more than reveling in the gayety of a bygone era.

ne of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano, Hines was born and raised 12 miles from Pittsburgh in Duquesne, PA. At the age of 17, he moved to Pittsburgh to take a job playing with vocalist Lois Deppe at a Pittsburgh nightclub called the Liederhaus. He was paid board, two meals a day & $15 a week.

As Hines put it, he was playing piano in Pittsburgh “before the word ‘jazz’ was even invented.”

By his 25th birthday, he led his own orchestra that performed up to four shows a night at The Grand Terrace Café – a Chicago speakeasy controlled by Al Capone.

When he died in California at the age of 79, his Steinway was auctioned for the benefit of gifted low-income music students, as he wished.

OY ELDRIDGE 1911-1989

B

orn on Pittsburgh’s North Side, Roy “Little Jazz” Eldridge started playing piano at age five, but by age 11 was locking himself in his room for hours to perfect his fiery, energetic trumpet style.

After being expelled from school in the ninth grade, he hit the road to perform in bands throughout the Midwest, eventually landing in New York, Chicago, and then Paris.

Known to be fiercely competitive, he would finish gigs and then challenge other musicians to an improv contest to see who could play the best. With his incredible range and lightning speed, he rarely lost.

In 1941, Little Jazz became the first black musician to become a permanent member of a white big band when he started traveling with Gene Krupa’s Orchestra. Racism made touring difficult – Eldridge usually couldn’t stay in the same hotels or eat in the same restaurants as his colleagues. During one incident in York, PA, Krupa was arrested and fined after getting into a fist fight with a restaurant owner who refused to serve Eldridge.

he Jazz Age brought great progress in America—and Pittsburgh. As the world emerged from war and pandemic, a sense of optimism shaped the city. Skyscrapers soared, industry flourished, and Pittsburgh’s iron and steel forged a strong new America.

It was also a time of advancement for many Americans. Women gained protected voting rights with the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment and began entering the workforce in increasing numbers. The Harlem Renaissance ushered in the Jazz Age, and the fight for equality for Black Americans gained organized momentum. Progress was not universal, however; the 1920s also saw the rise of hate groups intent on denying universal freedoms.

Still, a new era had taken root.

AXINE SULLIVAN 1911-1987

H

ailing from Homestead, Maxine was a jazz vocalist from the mid-30’s until just before her death in 1987 at the age of 75. She started her music career in her uncle’s band The Red Hot Peppers in which she occasionally played the flugelhorn and valve trombone.

Despite success as a vocalist and movie, TV and stage actress, Maxine took a break from performing in the late 50’s and early 60’s to work as a nurse.

Her second husband (she married four times) was to band leader John Kirby. In 1940, Sullivan and Kirby were featured on the radio program Flow Gently Sweet Rhythm, making them the first black jazz artists to have their own weekly radio show.

enny Clarke, known among musicians as “Klook” for one of his characteristic drum licks, started life on Wylie Avenue in the Lower Hill District. He was orphaned at age five, moved into a Pittsburgh orphanage and learned to play the drums in the orphanage’s marching band.

Clarke dropped out of Herron Hill Junior High (now Margaret Milliones Technical Academy) at the age of 15 to become a professional musician and soon started touring with Roy Eldridge through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia.

In 1943, Clarke was drafted into the US Army. During basic training, he married singer Carmen McRae and went absent without leave for almost four months. Eventually he was found and sent to Europe where he was discharged in 1946. Around this time, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Liaquat Ali Salaam.

Spending the next couple of decades living in both New York and Paris, Clarke circled back to Pittsburgh to teach jazz at the University of Pittsburgh in 1979.

n the early 1920’s, the pioneers of jazz were reshaping Pittsburgh - giving life to a new art form popular in the 2,000 speakeasies that dotted the city.

Against this vibrant backdrop, a young accountant named Louis Plung launched Louis Plung & Company with his wife Jane from their kitchen table on Douglas Street in Squirrel Hill. The year was 1921.

Corner drug stores, neighborhood groceries…Lou & Jane’s goal was to help those businesses succeed by providing high-quality, personalized tax, audit, and consulting services. That’s still our goal today.

As the firm and the city evolved, Lou & Jane moved the firm into the Law & Finance Building in the early 1930’s and Louis Plung & Company has been downtown ever since. Through the jazz age, the industrial age,

Renaissance I & II and into the current era of stateof-the-art healthcare, education, tech, and robotics, the goal has always been the same.

oted for his rich, bass-baritone voice, Billy was a renowned jazz vocalist and horn player.

He usually performed as Billy Eckstine because a club owner said the original spelling was “too Jewish”.

Nicknamed Mr. B, he was also revered as a style icon.

He designed and patented a high roll collar that formed a B over a Windsor-knotted tie – known as the Mr. B Collar. In addition to looking stylish, the collar expanded and contracted without popping open, allowing his neck to swell while playing his horns.

He grew up in Highland Park and his childhood home on 5913 Bryant Street is now marked with a State Historical Marker.

His career suffered a setback after LIFE magazine profiled Eckstein in their April 1950 edition. One of the photos showed Eckstein surrounded by a group of white female admirers, one of whom had her hand on his shoulder and her head on his chest while she laughed. Controversy ensued that had a direct effect on the trajectory of Eckstein’s career.

When he died at the age of 78 his final word was “Basie”.

ittsburgh is a storied city whose streets have long been alive with a mix of innovations.

During the 1920s to the 30s, it simultaneously served as an industrial hub, medical center, and home to some of the world’s best known jazz influencers.

P

Among the roaring steel mills and rail activity, the legendary sounds of jazz poured from ballrooms, clubs, and theaters throughout the city. The Hill District hosted acclaimed jazz greats from around the country, and also was home to First Lady of Jazz, Mary Lou Williams, who grew up in Pittsburgh.

The story of Pittsburgh would be incomplete without a chapter on its vast contributions in the health care and health insurance spaces—areas that UPMC and UPMC Health Plan have proudly pioneered. While the heartbeat of jazz was very much alive in Pittsburgh during this time, so too was the spirt of medical innovation and its power to help and heal communities.

By 1920 the Pittsburgh Hospital for Children (now UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh) had medical and surgical wards, an x-ray area, operating rooms, a dispensary, and a nursing school. The push to pioneer continued, and with every innovation, the next chapter critical to helping communities across the city and throughout the region was written.

n 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, giving many American women the right to vote for the first time.

The next few years ushered in what would be known as the Jazz Age, an era marked by new music, dance and fashion. This time period was also characterized by more economic and social freedom for many women.

Fast forward 100 years, when the World Economic Forum’s 2020 Global Gender Gap Report was released, revealing concerning findings. According to the report, if progress continued at its current pace, it would take women two-and-a-half more centuries to economically catch up to men.

As one of the largest U.S. financial institutions, PNC believes it is wellpositioned to tackle this challenge and shorten that timeline. In September 2021, the bank announced Project 257SM:

Accelerating Women’s Financial Equality, an initiative designed to help close the 257-year economic gender gap and expand on PNC’s decades-long track record of supporting female financial decision makers.

Additionally, PNC engaged more than 50 employees — at least one in each of PNC’s markets across the country — who identify as women or nonbinary to serve as Activators for the organization, helping to select and mentor SheEO Ventures.

PNC has identified four areas of focus that contribute to the disparity:

“As a financial institution that prospers when our customers prosper, it makes perfect sense that we would want to help tackle the economic gender gap,” said Beth Marcello, director of PNC Women’s Business Development. “Project 257 aligns with our brand purpose – when we accelerate women’s financial equality, we are making a positive difference, leveraging the power of our resources to help all move forward financially.”

In 1878, brothers Michael and Obediah Haymaker drilled in Murrysville, PA seeking oil. Instead, they found gas 1,460 feet below the ground. Historians recognize this well, the Haymaker, as the birth of the modern natural gas industry. Its existence came at the same time as industries were flocking to the Pittsburgh area. There were many companies formed because of access to this new source of energy.

Peoples has been providing natural gas service since 1885. Today, Peoples is the largest natural gas distribution company in Pennsylvania and serves approximately 760,000 customers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky. Peoples is also proud to employ approximately 1,500 people who live and work in the same communities we serve.

During her 37year career with U.S. Steel and its predecessors, she became the first female executive in the company’s storied history, attaining the office of executive vice president and chief financial officer. A Pittsburgh native, Gretchen helped guide her hometown’s most foundational corporation through periods of change and economic recovery while exhibiting “extraordinary grace and dignity,” said U.S. Steel’s then-CEO John Surma at the time of her retirement. “We are fortunate to have benefitted from her financial expertise and dedication.”

Away from her demanding career, Gretchen also took on leadership roles in the community including being the first-ever female president of the Duquesne Club. She also served on the board of directors for USG Corp. and Highmark.

It’s fitting that once again Gretchen is a pioneer this evening, becoming the recipient of the inaugural Women United Leadership Award. The Women United Leadership Award honors individuals who inspire leadership in other females through their actions and contributions to business and our community at large.

In addition to her many philanthropic efforts, Gretchen has been a consummate leader for United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, including 12 years of oversite of the Finance and Audit Committee which ensures financial stewardship at the highest level. Gretchen also led the effort to establish United Way’s Good Neighbor Center, focused on volunteerism across our community.
