The Ann & Bobby Bowden Family Legacy Award, sanctioned by the Bowden family, will be given annually at The Charlie & Tonja Ward Family Foundation's Championship Breakfast to a couple or individual who has demonstrated the character, faith, and family priorities of Mrs. Ann and Coach Bobby Bowden. The Bowden family has been a model family for our community, region, and nation. This award is a tribute to the Bowden family legacy. It honors individuals who embody the same values and who will inspire future generations to prioritize faith and family in their own lives. Nominations are submitted from the community and winners are selected by the Bowden Family Selection Committee.

CHARLIE WARD DISTINGUISHED EXCELLENCE AWARD HONOREE The Charlie Ward Distinguished Excellence Award is a prestigious honor bestowed upon individuals who exemplify the unwavering commitment to excellence as inspired by Colossians 3:23.

The award is a tribute to those who consistently dedicate themselves to being servant leaders and set a remarkable standard of diligence and integrity. Past recipients include Tony Dungy, Bobby Bowden, Earl Campbell, Carroll Dawson, and Rick Smith.

MISSION The Ward Foundation is a public charity, rooted in Christian values, supporting youth character development through sports, the arts, education and wellness to benefit underserved youth and supporting disaster relief initiatives.

David Ross

David Ross was born in Bainbridge, Georgia, in 1977, but was raised in Tallahassee, Florida. He was born into a family of athletes—his father, David Ross Sr., played in a men's softball league, and his mother, Jackie, played basketball. Ross' uncles were both football players in college. He attended Florida State University's laboratory school, Florida High School, in Tallahassee, Florida, where he played high school baseball.

Ross is one of five children.

Ross played college baseball for Auburn University and the University of Florida and participated in two College World Series. He started his major league career playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2002 and also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago Cubs. Ross had two World Series wins, one with the Boston Red Sox in 2013 and the Chicago Cubs in 2016. David then became manager of the Chicago Cubs from 2020-2023.

Ross resides in Tallahassee, FL and is the proud father of three amazing children.

Alison Posey Alison Posey is a sports anchor and reporter for WCTV in Tallahassee, Florida. Alison grew up an athlete, playing basketball and softball in high school. She earned a softball scholarship to St. Johns River Community College out of high school. She then continued her education at the University of Florida, where she played for UF's Club Softball team. Alison won a NCSA World Series title with the team in 2010.

Covering sports for Alison isn't just a job, it's a passion. From covering collegiate National Champions, to High School State Champions, to the littlest of athletes winning baseball World Series, Alison demonstrates the same attention to any athlete—big or small.

Alison became the first female sports director in the state of Florida for an over the air channel in 2015. She was named the 2018 AP Sportscaster of the Year for small market stations in the state of Florida.

2023 BOWDEN AWARD HONOREES

Dr. Tom Haney

Mrs. Dorothy & Dr. A.D Brickler* *(Posthumously)

Tom C. Haney grew up in Panama City, Florida. He enrolled at FSU on a football scholarship in 1960, but after his freshman year, gave up football to concentrate on premedical studies. He attended medical school at Emory University School of Medicine. After med school, he spent two years in the Air Force as a flight surgeon before completing his Orthopedic Residency program at Emory. He cofounded Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic with Dr. Doug Henderson and was an FSU team physician for 35 years, which included all of Coach Bowden's years as FSU's head football coach. His involvement at Florida State has included: President of his senior class, Chairman of the Alumni Board of Trustees, and, now, member of the FSU Foundation Board of Trustees. He was named to the Alumni Association Circle of Gold and is a Moore-Stone member of the FSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Tom was married to the late Dianne Haney for 50 years, with whom he had two children and five grandchildren. He and his wife, Wendy Walker, a fellow graduate of FSU, reside in Tallahassee.

When Mrs. Dorothy Anderson Brickler, and her husband, the late Dr. Alexander Dumas “A.D.” Brickler returned to Tallahassee more than sixty-five years ago, they began a legacy of faith, family, and service that continues to impact the community today. Dr. Brickler, a renowned figure in the world of obstetrics and gynecology, and Mrs. Brickler, an esteemed medical office manager, were true humanitarians. Dr. Brickler’s work would transform the lives of countless families in Florida's capital city and beyond. The women's pavilion at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare bears his name in tribute to a lifelong dedication to maternal and child healthcare.

Dr. A.D. and Mrs. Dorothy Brickler met as students at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Their friendship was the spark that began a lifelong partnership of service and commitment to their community. Mrs. Brickler earned a master’s degree in biology, and Dr. Brickler would go on to earn a medical degree from the Meharry Medical College School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. He served in the United States Air Force,where he completed his residency training as a military physician at Lockbourne Air Force Base Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

In 1957, Dr. and Mrs. Brickler made the pivotal decision to move to Tallahassee, Florida, where he joined his father-in-law, the Dr. R.L. Anderson, in medical practice. The practice, later known as Anderson-Brickler Midwifery & Obstetrical Services, became a cornerstone of maternal and child healthcare in the region. Dr. Brickler also practiced at the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Hospital. When the FAMU Hospital merged with Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, now known as Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH), in 1971, Dr. Brickler and Dr. Anderson made history by becoming the first black physicians at TMH. In 1982 Dr. Brickler was named "Family Doctor of the Year'' by the American Academy of Family Physicians and Good Housekeeping magazine. By the time of his retirement from full-time practice at the age of 90, he had delivered more than 30,000 babies over the course of his storied 60-year career.

Dr. and Mrs. Brickler provided a legacy of love, faith, family and service to their four children, and their families. As mentors and role models, Tallahassee is better because of the Brickler’s enduring impact, a testament to lives dedicated to healing, hope, and the celebration of new beginnings.

2023 CHARLIE WARD DISTINGUISHED EXCELLENCE AWARD HONOREE

Coach Sue Semrau If the world truly understood the immense impact a graduate from Shorecrest High School in Seattle, Washington, could have on the lives of millions, they would have been better prepared for the extraordinary influence Coach Sue Semrau, through divine providence, has had. Coach Sue, a remarkable woman who attended the University of Puget Sound, the University of California-San Diego, and the University of Southern California, has forged a career and life filled with remarkable achievements as the head coach of the Florida State University Lady Seminoles.

Coach Sue's accomplishments are so extensive they could fill numerous volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica. With an impressive career record of 470-271, she has been honored with multiple prestigious awards, including the Kay Yow Heart of a Coach Award, the Barefoot Coach of the Year Award, the Associated Press Coach of the Year Award, the WBCA Coach of the Year Award, the ESPNW National Coach of the Year Award, and she has been named ACC Coach of the Year four times. Her exceptional leadership qualities also led to her appointment as the President of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Additionally, she has contributed to USA Basketball, serving as a court coach for the Women's National Team.

Under Coach Sue's guidance, the Lady Seminoles made 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, reached the Sweet 16 five times, advanced to the Elite Eight three times, and secured two ACC co-regular season titles. As the winningest coach in FSU History, Coach Sue has achieved 52 victories against AP Top 25 teams, recorded eight consecutive 20-win seasons, and a total of 14 seasons with 20 or more wins. Furthermore, 22 players have signed professional contracts either in the WNBA or with overseas club teams. Notably, at the time of her retirement on March 21, 2022, she held the distinction of being the longest-serving head coach at Florida State University.

Head Coach Semrau fostered great success on and off the court for Florida State's women's basketball program through the emphasis on community service. Partnering with Samaritan's Feet, the team participated in shoe distributions worldwide and raised funds through Semrau coaching a barefoot game annually. Additionally, they made significant impacts throughout Semrau coaching a barefoot game annually.

Additionally, they have made significant impacts throughout the State of Florida; Bainbridge, Georgia; the Big Bend area; schools in Milwaukee, Harlem, West Chester, and Wadsworth, Ohio; Martinsville, Indiana, and Durham, North Carolina. Coach Sue’s reach of giving is not bound by the borders of our great Nation as she has blessed the lives of children in the U.S. Virgin Islands and youth in Dakar, Senegal. These connections fostered inspiration to both children and adults through visits to schools, playgrounds, and other community locations. Engaged in various charitable activities, such as visiting Boys and Girls Clubs, elementary schools, and hospitals in different cities across the United States, Coach Sue’s impact extends beyond the basketball court.

Despite all her professional accomplishments and accolades, Coach Sue remains deeply committed to her family. During the 2020-21 season, she took a single-year leave of absence to assist in her mother’s fight against cancer back in her hometown of Seattle, Washington.

She fulfills her duties as the Godmother to associate head coach Brooke Wyckoff's daughter, Avery, demonstrating her unwavering devotion to those closest to her.
