Our building is not a formal exploration of design but an exploration through material and construction methods. We explore how building new conditions and deconstruction old creates and opportunity crafting new experiences, engaging community and fostering human experience

Through this it creates a juxtaposition of new place identity and old place identity breaking down and addressing each scale of the project

Our building proves to approach design through the careful manipulation of material, context, active program spaces, and existing conditions that allow us to emphasize the existing human experience and place identity while also creating a new building identity.

DESIGN CONCEPT

CHARLOTTE NC TIMELESS MOMENTS I IJonathan Logan

BUILDING USES A FOCUS ON MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION AND EXPOSED MATERIAL DETAILS TO CREATE AN OVERALL EXPERIENCE FOR WORK AND PLAY.

USE OF WOOD AND STEEL DETAILS CREATES AN UNIQUE DESIGN AND EXPERIENCE, WHILE FOCUS ON NET ZERO DESIGN THROUGH THESE FEATURES ALSO HELPS TO CREATE AN EXPERIENCE.

EXPERIENCE

THE BUILDINGS IS CREATED THROUGH THE CAREFUL CONSIDERATION OF MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION, NEW AND OLD PLACE IDENTITY IN A FORM OF THRESHOLDS, AND CONNECTING SPACES AND COMMUNITY TOGETHER THROUGH CAREFUL PLACEMENT OF PROGRAM.

FOCUSED PROGRAM/DESIGNED PROGRAM WAS AN ORGANIZATION OF WORKSHOPS THAT WOULD ENGAGE IN THE ACTIVE BUILDING COMMUNITY. THIS WOULD ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE AND HELP TO CONNECT TO THE NEW AND OLD PLACE IDENTITY. THE SPACES ARE BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ALLOWING ENGAGEMENT THROUGHOUT THE WHILE PROGRAM

OTHER THAN THE EVENT SPACES WHICH ARE A NEW CONSTRUCTION CREATING A COMPLETELY NEW PLACE IDENTITY WITH IN THE ORIGINAL BUILDING AS WELL AS THE NEW, PANEL SYSTEMS ARE IMPLEMENTED. THESE PANEL SYSTEMS ALLOW PROGRAMS TO HAVE A LEVEL OF CONNECTION. THEY HELP TO CREATE PHYSICAL OR VISUAL CONNECTIONS OR CREATES PRIVATE CONNECTIONS THAT STILL ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY. INSPIRED BY THE CHARLES AND RAY EAMES HOUSE THESE PANELS ARE SIMILAR TO STORE FRONTS AND MADE FROM WOOD, HOLDING DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATERIALS

LIGHT COLLECTION

THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF AREA CALCULATED FOR THE PV PANELS ON THE ROOF AND FACADE IS AS FOLLOWS:

SOLAR PANELS: 14,614 SQFT X 6

FACADE PANELS: 107.50 SQFT X 117

TOTAL SQ-FT: 100,261.50 SQ-FT

THE TOTAL SQ-FT IS CALCULATED WITH THE TOTAL PV CELL SURFACE AMOUNT WHICH IS 80% OF THE PV AND WITH A 15% EFFICIENCY THIS IS THE TOTAL OUT PUT OF COLLECTED ENERGY YEARLY AND DAILY:

ENERGY = AREA(SQFT) x EFFICIENCY x USABLE SURFACE x 365

DAILY ENERGY COLLECTION: 12,031.38 kWh

YEARLY ENERGY COLLECTION: 4,391,453.7

WATER COLLECTION

THE CURRENT BUILDING DESIGN DOES NOT INCORPORATE A WATER COLLECTION OR REUSE STRATEGY. AS A SUSTAINABLE DESIGN APPROACH FOR BOTH SITE AND BUILDING, A WATER COLLECTION SYSTEM IS INTEGRATED INTO THE BIG ROOF AND ALONG THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING. THIS FEATURE IS A COMBINATION OF WATER SPRINKLERS AND SMALL MICRO ECOSYSTEMS UNDERNEATH THE EXPOSED ROOF. THESE CRAFTED PANELS HANG FROM THE EXPOSED ROOF STRUCTURE COVERING THE SPRINKLERS AND ALLOWING FOR WATER TO DRIP NATURALLY DOWN ONTO THE PLANTS BELOW. ADDITIONALLY ANY RAIN THAT FALLS IS COLLECTED INTO STORAGE UNITS UNDERNEATH THE BIG ROOF AND FRONT OF THE SITE. THIS IS THEN REUSED TO WATER THE PLANTS OR IS REUSED INTO THE BUILDING.

BASE MODEL Filter into building Storage Storage Filter Filter TIMELESS MOMENTS I I Jonathan Logan ZERO WATER

THE BUILDING DESIGN WAS ORGANIZED TO SUPPORT LARGE AMOUNTS OF AIR FLOW THROUGH THE BUILDING WHICH BEFORE CREATED A LOT OF STALE AIR. 3 EXHIBITION/EVENT SPACES WERE CREATED TO ALLOW FOR AIR TO BE CIRCULATED THROUGH THE BUILDING ALLOWING AIR OUT AND IN.

ADDITIONALLY THEY WERE DESIGNED TO PULL IN AIR FROM BOTH OF THE WIND TUNNELS FROM THE FRONT OF THE SITE NEAR THE BOILER YARD AND THE BIG ROOF. THIS DESIGN HELP TO CUT DOWN THE AMOUNT OF NEEDED COOLING DURING THE SUMMER AND REGULATE SPACES WHEN NEEDED. THE ADDITIONAL CORRIDORS ALSO HAVE SUPPORTED OPERABLE WINDOWS AT THE TOP TO HELP WITH MORE AIR FLOW IN THE TIGHTER SPACES.

FOLLOWING THE OPERABLE WINDOWS, ANY OF THE NEW STRUCTURE THAT WAS ADDED TO THE BUILDING WAS ADDED AS PINE OR OAK WOOD THAT IS LOCAL TO THE CHARLOTTE AREA. THESE WOODS ARE ALSO RECYCLED TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF CARBON EMISSIONS BY AROUND 60%

THE BUILDING IS EQUIP WITH AIR HANDLING UNITS THAT HELP TO CONTROL THE BUILDINGS VENTILATION THROUGH SPACES. THIS ADDITIONALLY PUSHES AIR THROUGH THE LARGER SPACES AND CORRIDORS TO NATRUALY VENT THROUGH THE BUILDINGS DESIGN. WHILE THE VRF SYSTEM HELPS TO HEAT AND COOL THE BUILDING, HOT AND COLD GAS LINES ARE RUN THROUGH THE SMALLER SPACES HEATING UP OVERALL SPACES IN AN AREA WHILE NATRUAL VENTILATION AND THE VRF SYSTME HELPS TO CONROL THE AIR.
