JACK AND JILL OF AMERICA, INC., was founded in 1938, in Philadelphia, by a group of African American mothers who wanted their children and teens to have “all the opportunities possible for a normal and graceful approach to a beautiful adulthood” in spite of the segregated society of the time. Since then the organization has evolved into one of the most well-known family organizations in the nation with 262 chapters representing more than 50,000 family members.

In 1960 – when the late educator, Henrietta B. Franklin, came up with the idea to form a local chapter of Jack and Jill – Montgomery County Maryland looked a lot different than it does today. African Americans accounted for five percent of the county’s population of 341,000, and they were barred from social and cultural activities that integrated them with whites, including public swimming pools, movie theaters, some restaurants and performance spaces. Mrs. Franklin was determined that her child would have access to cultural events and venues; the opportunity to develop leadership skills; and the freedom to form social networks in the midst of these trying times, and she saw Jack and Jill of America as a way to achieve those goals. She gathered several like-minded Mothers in the county and, with the assistance of the Washington, D.C. Chapter, their group was installed as an official chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., on September 30, 1962.

Since then, our Chapter has grown from 16 families to more than 100. For more than 60 years we have been an integral part of the Montgomery County Maryland community; conducting community service and organizing enriching activities for children. Our annual community-facing events include a “Jack and Jill Day” picnic in September; a Holiday Celebration in December; and our popular Community Spelling Bee and Oratorical Competition in February. Our programs are firmly guided by the belief that every child, given the proper guidance and opportunities, can be a leader.

In 2010, we began holding a Biennial Cotillion-Beautillion to further expand our leadership development programming for young men and women in the community. A portion of the proceeds from our 8th Biennial Cotillion-Beautillion will support the work of three 501(c) 3 organizations:

• Extraordinary Birthdays, which provides birthday parties and literacy support for homeless children.

• Wings For Joy, which provides programs and services to women and children including delivering backpacks, clothing, home and personal care items through local community centers, schools, and shelters.

• Jack and Jill of America Foundation, Inc., the philanthropic arm of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., which has, since its inception in 1968, distributed millions of dollars to communities all across America.

They ALL played a part in cultivating Diane Yates’s understanding, appreciation, and love of dance and music.
