The Popsicle Dream is an intimate space for kids or adults to retire in a lush environment. It is facing out into the nature.

From the client’s property, one accesses this green haven from a rope bridge that connects the outer deck to the land.

The upper platform is the main floor of the structure. Someone feeling adventurous enough can also come up through a lower deck and ascend a custom-made steel ladder that leads to a trap door.

From the back side, climbers can work their way up onto a climbing wall that goes all the way up from the ground level to the upper facade.

The architecture of this stilted construction uses thin materials, trying to aim for an elegant and light look. It is a mix of modernist and tropical architecture, that provides large windows and a large sliding door.

The goal was to create a connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Salvaged windows are being given a second life by adding thin steel frames to them, that funnel the views and reinforce the presence of the glass elements.

The external sun blinds draw wide horizontal lines that work in harmony with the horizontality of the large exterior decks.

POPSICLE DREAM Like most of O2 Treehouse’s projects, this one has been prefabricated in house for the larger parts and has been re-assembled on site. The prefabrication includes the dry fitting of the structure, the framing of the wall panels, and most of the special parts like the steel brackets and the railing. A ceiling painting project has been performed by a local artist in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In the project, I was in charge of reworking a conceptual design to suite the client’s desires. I took care of detailing the construction model in order to solve the structural and fabrication problems. The steel parts

have been custom made and I provided any shop drawing or specification during the in house building process.

A substantial part of my responsabilities in the project, have been working on logistics, material sourcing and purchases, as well as coordinating the labor until completion.

Rosenberg project, Shoreline, WA O2 TREEHOUSE 2019-2020

The Seattle Nest has been the most challenging construction project for me to work on for a in house built creation.

Starting from a previous conceptual design, the project has grown along the way. It has gotten to be a treehouse with 210 sqft of livible space and with a triangular footprint of over 25 feet per side.

During the process, the project has gone through a structural engineering study, and through an analysis for the rigging.

Working on that project has been an important learning opportunity for me. It required coming up with 010

different custom structural and buildable solutions that we could implement within our budget and with our own shop set up.

The complexity of the project comes from the uneven shapes, the lack of symetry, and the free form roofs.

As a result, most of the parts of the construction are unique and have been very design and labor intensive.

Also, the client has had high esthetical expectations, requiring thin steel members, large glass panes, and setting high design standards in general.

The floor structure is made of large glu -lam beams, from 3 1/2’’ x 16’’ to 5 1/2’’ x 19 1/2’’, and regular floor joist.

The glu-lam beams are tied together with custom made steel brackets.

The middle part of the project is a curtain wall type of construction, with a steel structure and glass panes in front. These parts required laser cut parts to be produced and welded to regular parts like 2’’x4’’ tubing and iron angles. For the needs of transport and handling large parts, the North facade had to be divided into parts and we needed to come up with smart assembly systems to bolt them back together.

Other parts of the facade, like the wall angle brackets (see page 15), were also laser cut and formed from a seperate company. These parts are bolted to the facade parts. Their shape result from the different angles of the walls and roof.

Overall, the steel work demanded advanced welding skills, so that the complex parts have been made by Takuro Hashitaka from One Hat One Hand, in San Francisco.

The treehouse also include some special elements, like a custom elevator running through a steel funnel and pulled by a winch.

The fabrication of the treehouse has unfolded in four seperate stages.

The first step was prefabricating and dry fitting the floor structure, pre-cutting the large glu lam beams and joist as well as fitting the steel brackets.

Later on, the wall sections have been welded at One Hat One Hand’s facilities in San Francisco, while I was providing some laser cut and formed parts to work with. That part in itself needed some timeline and logistics management. I also needed to provide design information in the form of shop drawings or 3D renders.

Next, a crew of carpenters was in charge of dry fitting the steel walls and the roof skeleton. Most parts of the roof had been CNC cut previously.

They needed to be put in place and to comply with the digital model. At this stage, we could realize some of the blocking and custom parts and assess the implementation for the soffit, sheathing and finish details.

The last stage (currently in process), is the installation on site in the Seattle area.

My assignment on this project has also been sourcing and planning the installation of the glass panes and the windows. These are produced externally by specialized companies.

The glazing system itself required for me to design every aspect of it at a high detail level. This includes defining the rubber gasket thicknesses and hardness, the type of hardware, the spacers, or caulking products.

Likewise, the system had to be thought through in order to be installed the easiest way and to comply with a weather proof and insulated architecture.

The Gersten treehouse project is still in the designing phase.

It is a fully insulated house elevated in the trees, using modular building methods.

The plateform is made of the ‘‘tetratruss system’’ that O2 Treehouse developed and has been implementing over the years in multiple built projects.

The system is structurally selfsupporting and allows to cover large spans without the need of any beams.

The floors and walls are using the so called SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) system. These panels are made of 022

an insulation material sandwiched between two OSB boards, making it an efficient system to prefabricate and to install.

Thus, I have been detailing these systems in a 3D model, working on the modularity throughout the whole project, and coming up with custom and repeatable green roof and water drainage systems.

The architecture also hosts wide foldable glass walls to open up the structure as much as possible to the outside decks and to create generous views.

All the green roofs in the project are designed to be accessible and thought as Zen gardens and can be supporting some veggie gardening.

In September 2020, O2 Treehouse is launching a fundraising campaign for its ecotourism and hospitality franchise. The brand aims to create a network of ‘‘glamping’’ sites to be rented out and to accomodate a way to enjoy the outdoors.

During that time, I have been assisting the company on different aspects of the marketing.

I supported the operations by participating in the preliminary meetings for the start of the campaign.

I offered my input by brainstorming ideas and opinions about the visual content strategy.

I also produced visual content myself in the form of architectural views and animated gifs using Sketchup and 028

Photoshop. These visuals present the modular Tetratruss concept, the building process of the Glamping Tents and the Equilibrium Homes, the tensegrity legs concept, and exploded project views.

Finally, one of my roles was also to create and provide 3D files to third party companies for visualizations to be outsourced. I was in communication with the rendering companies and gave some feedbacks on the renders.

The main designer for the ‘‘Indiana Jones bridge’’ was Marianna Munguia Chang who was in charge of designing and modeling the bridge.

I first stepped into the project to produce some details related to the plank and louver brackets and to fabricate bamboo spacers, that fit between the planks.

Later on, as Marianna had completed the initial designing work I took in charge some of the management tasks 030

and some additional designing work for the project.

I participated in assessing the general rigging of the bridge, using wire cables and rigging components (turnbuckles, cables swages, eye bolts, etc.).

In particular, I detailed a rigging solution for the section of the bridge going through the trees , that worked as an intermediary point of rigging to split the span of the bridge into two sections.

Finally, I had to produce drawings and communicate design information to the installation crew.

In addition, I was in charge of designing and producing shop drawings for the steel posts that anchor the bridge on either side. The posts were partly made of laser cut pieces and were welded by an external welder (Pfunder Metal Werks).

The posts had to be designed in accordance with the general design.

The design of the posts required to take into account alignment of the cable connection points, the width of the bridge, and the design of the concrete casts.

The Branches Club House is my first built project working at O2 Treehouse as a lead designer and project manager.

It is a stilted construction with two room arranged on either side of a main ‘‘tree post’’. Both rooms are connected together and one can access via a ladder through a trap door.

A large netted area creates a hang out spot under the treehouse from which 034

you can enter into the lower room. The construction is made of prefabricated framed wall panels, a conventional floor joist, and uses some transparent polycarbonate panels for the roofing.

A special element of the project was to create self-made shingles from pine butcher block panels. These were CNC cut into the desired shape and painted, forming a unique ‘‘fish skin’’ facade.

The facade of the second volume is designed in contrast, using salvaged brown siding.

The structure on stilts, was using some carpentry joinery details and a point of rigging to the neighboring tree.

Some steel brackets have been made in house for the needs of the structure.

Participatory mobile-kitchen & multi-purpose carriage, Nantes, France ENSAN WITH ADÈLE VIGNE / NANTES NETWORK 2012-2013

The Légumobil project is a small mobile and adaptable structure that encourages new forms of urban and social encounter. It introduces animals and fresh harvest in the heart of the city. The project also raises awareness about the benefits of vegetarian meals and local supply sources by setting up various participatory actions and neighbourhood gatherings in the urban daily life.

Légumobil relies on a local network already settled on the Nantes Island and South-Nantes quarter : social workers, cooking specialists, artists, landscapers, benevolent people...

The project intends to evolve, adapt, and interact with this context.

The built project is a light and mobile structure that contains a kitchen and that can be animal-drawn.

The technical design is lowtech inspired and designed to save resources for minimal weight, costs, and easy implementation. In order to build the project on full42

scale, we had to take into account the human, material, economical, and time resources that we had at our disposal.

Some waste materials were used for the metal parts of the frame, and mainly FSC-certified wood for the rest of the construction.

Vertical labyrinth for the small ones MINIMAOUSSE IV COMPETITION 2010

The Nida’beille (honeycomb) is made of vertical nidagravel panels attached on a metal structure. It forms an obscur and imposing monolith at the children’s scale.

Its surface, covered by a smooth textile, has an alveolar structure.

These alveoluses create interesting optical effects, changing depending on your position. One can look out 48

from the interior without being seen from the exterior.

Looking closely through the pores, we enter the XXS world and our fantasy is stimulated.

Inside, you sneak in and climb on the obstacles until you reach the highest point of the labyrinth or spook and play hide-and-seek !

Bar-furniture for a firm’s lounge - Saint-Herblain, France FREELANCE 2011

The bar was designed to provide a catering spot intended for the interns of an education centre near Nantes.

The project was aiming to give a contemporary and cosy touch to the main hall. The use of colored translucent polycarbonate permits to release the zenithal light of the hall to the corridor and creates an invitation to the lounge area.

The light wood of the structure and the white shelves are meant to give a warm and sober aspect to the room.

The construction in real size of the bar was done by a professional carpenter with whom I collaborated until the setting of the furniture on site.

Outdoor metal table DO IT MYSELF 2011

During my student time, I had to find cheap alternatives to furnish my apartments. There were also some objects without real use that were being collected with time.

The approach here, to build this terrace table, was to consider what could be done from the waste of the appartment.

The construction required few tools and above all, few additional elements than the collected items. I additionaly used wires, some hardware and rubber caps.

As the table is made of bolt and embedded elements, it is easy to dismember for storage and to be put together again.

Pitch : An old farming couple is living peacefully in Lavau-sur-Loire in their lovely countryhouse with front garden since the eighties. Nantes, the neighbouring «green-city», proliferates and spreads steadily towards the sourrounding lands.

The couple’s life and their idle daily activities are gradually disturbed.

The sudden discoveries of the growing city is made of comic and improbable situations. The city of Nantes progressively reaches our protagonists’ house which persuades them to flee towards the ocean by the estuary. But as they are leaving, Saint-Nazaire, on the other side, has already caught up to them...

The scenario has been imagined after the grounds for thought of ‘‘My city tomorrow, Nantes 2030’’. The frontal vision of the city was inspired from the projection screen we had to use for the experimental approach of our teaching. The 320° screen called naexus, reminded us the linearity of the territory of Nantes’s estuary.

The Loire river is then the guideline that appears continuously on the screen thanks to our point of view. It connects the quiet town Lavau-surLoire, and the booming city of Nantes.

Elements will move from one side to another of the screen and make both worlds interact.

Site plan.

Our intention for the proposal was to preserve the unique design and spacial qualities of the historic building and to keep it as the center of the school complex. The needed extension is designed to be as functional and minimal as possible, as to not overbuild the area.

With the extended facility we aim to catch the special atmosphere of the site and create a dialogue with the surrounding vineyards and hills in which the school is built in.

Our choice was to distribute the added program surface accross two main extensions, limiting the size of the volumes.

The highlight of the project is to use 058

Program.

the sloped terrain and to insert our new buildings in the ground with facade surfaces on interior patios or only on one side of the new volume.

Thus, we are reducing the ‘‘visible’’ parts of the building from the outside and more integrated in the site.

A three-storey classroom wing sits between the access road and the existing building. It has its facades parallel to the existing geometries, letting a room for an underground floor that opens to a new schoolyard.

On the East side, a one floor building hosts the teachers’ work place. It is only visible from the interior courtyard as it is partially covered in the landscape.

SCHOOL EXTENSION We are entering the new extensions from the main lobby, keeping it the central area of the building.

The Western wing gathers new classrooms oriented West and East.

Located between the old and new planned building, the School Café is paired with the library and the lounge area, which open towards the ‘‘Action courtyard’’.

On the East side is the extended teacher area, a little isolated but still with close access to the kid’s playground.

As an extension of the 90s building, the new workshop/warehouse can be reach from the road and is isolated acoustically.

has a different use and quality: an introverted teacher’s courtyard, the South-oriented ‘‘Action courtyard’’ as a performance and outdoor projects’ stage, and the main playground linked with the main entrance/lobby.

The material language tries to match the existing materiality of the older facilities, and aims for an economical and sustainable basis.

The structure of the building and its hybrid ceiling are made with woodboards and concrete. These materials beside aesthetic bring the structural rigidity and acoustical comfort.

I worked on this small sized project in collaboration with the project leader and drafted details as the project was in its advanced phases.

I gained experience on various topics including the implementation of prefabricated concrete panels in the facade, the implementation of wooden frame windows and wood facade, roof isolation, or structural wood panel walls.

We had high expectations on the aesthetic of the project and were aiming for pure and minimal designs as well as reducing the costs to a minimum.

I had the opportunity to interact with the structural and thermic/acoustic ingenieurs in the different stages of the design while I was responsible for the drafting of the detail plans.

The building has a reinforced concrete structure on the East facade, on which the prefabricated concrete panels are hooked on, with a layer of isolation between them.

We experimented with several ornamental patterns on the panels like the example on the right.

The rest of the structure is a timber frame system with a timber top layer and wooden frame windows.

The green roof has a simple reinforced concrete structure. It is held in its periphery by the facades and in the interior by the massive wood panels used for the walls.

On its upper and lower periphery, there are prefabricated concrete panels, that give the impression of having two raw concrete slabs framing the middle of the building made of wood.

Sport Gymnasium Uhlbach, Germany ARCHITEKTUR 109 2016-2017

The Sport Gymnasium Uhlbach is a local sport facility near the city of Stuttgart.

The intention of the overall design was to fit smoothly in the neighboorhood with minimal volume and respecting the architectural style. Thus, the slopes of the roof refer to local architecture and limit the height of the roof on the street side.

The architecture is modernist inspired with a concrete structure and clinker facade. The roof structure is the structural challenge of the project. It is made of a main laminated wood beam through the length of the hall with intermediate side beams. A four sided laminated wood panel holds a large skylight, bringing light to the sport hall.

SPORT GYM I was involved on this project at different periods, mainly for the drafting of detail plans.

I could improve my knowledge on facades by drawing window details on this clinker wall facade.

On interior details, I was also in charge of the main hall wooden ceiling, as well as the details for the gym equipment (rings, ropes, etc.) that had to be planned with a structural engineer.

I also had freedom on interior design for the drafting of baths and dressing rooms where pieces of furniture and surfaces had to be planned.

Overall, I gained more experience here on the designing process with a project in the construction phase, learning more about detailling and how to deal with a tight schedule and reduced budget.

South facade.

The elementary school of Weinheim develops on the western site limit. It stretches out to the North to create a new signal from the main street and connects to the lobby of the existing Cultural Centre without major modification of the building.

The overall setting - the school building on the West, the Cultural Centre on the North, and the Gymnasium on the South-East, creates a maximal outdoor area, that is shared as a communal centre for culture, education, and sport. The oblong figure of the school also protects the adjacent neighborhood acoustically from the playground and separates clearly the new activities from the living area, respecting the scale of the nearby houses as well.

SCHOOL WEINHEIM The main entrance to the school leads to the forum. It is a wide open flexible space that gathers the canteen, the reception and lobby area, and a winter garden. The forum is in touch with the multipurpose and «all-day care» rooms, so that it can be used for extra educational events and shared with the cultural centre.

functions, organized as units, and separated by patios. The hallway is considered as a communication and movement area, while the work spaces benefit of a calmer orientation to the West or patios. Each Classcluster has classrooms, smaller team rooms, teachers’ team-rooms, free communication and learning zones, as well as outdoor terraces or « green classrooms ».

The new Clinic stands as a clear and free form in an open park enclosed by three major built limits and a main road on the South. The shape and positioning of the project aims to conserve the precious natural character of the site, and extend the green flow in an urban scale. Specific hills and trees conditioned the compact shape of the building and its angle, as well as defining and designing the outdoor spaces. As a result, we create fluid and connecting paths around the building and through the area.

The red colored concrete recalls the traditional red stones of the city of Freiburg. The white metal sunshades make the facade have a bright and evolving appearance.

Longitudinal section.

The groundplans develops around a central and open space lit by zenithal light. The main Hall provides quick access to all functions and gathers the public and social areas for parents and children. Internal functions are united around lighted patios and the whole plan avoids the classic linear corridor organisation.

The specific circular plan forms an 076

outter ring along the facade, where the patient rooms or therapeutic rooms are set. The ring plan allows a flexibility for the distribution of the rooms and an easy panoptical system to watch after the patients.

Above all, the main quality is the resulting wide, multi-use zones along the ring and patios to be used as playgrounds, communication and socialising areas.

The renovation of the Dornbirn hospital consists in the restructuration and ampliation of the surgery area, providing larger operation rooms and adding a fast-track unit. Besides, the planning includes the phasing of the construction process, in which the surgery area still needs to function.

Our proposal relocated the sterilisation area on a western extension from which the steril materials are supplied through a northern corridor along the facade. The patients come in and out from the opposite side. Thus, the new horizontal excrescence on which the rest of the building sits could later be expanded on the whole length of the building.

As a large scale project, the Uniklinik of Heidelberg has been a rich learning terrain as a young architect.

I have been working on the project on the implementation phases ‘LPH Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg - Neubau Chirurgische Klinik 1. BA - Kunst am Bau 5 to 7’. I participated on the drawing of details in the scales 1:20 to 1:10, for the designing of specific rooms or interior settings. For the project, I have worked on different door-types details, and their implementation in their constructive context.

Furthermore, I was responsible for graphic studies of material and color combinations in the interior spaces.

Thus, I was also involved in the constructive aspects while proposing specific products and having an overview of the interior design.

Hospital complex of Bolzano, Italy TIEMANN-PETRI UND PARTNER 2014-2016

The restructuration and extension project of the hospital complex in Bolzano, Italy, began in 2001.

The project goes from the urban masterplan to the development and construction of each seperate building in the complex.

The main concept is to create a new axis called «Magistrale» that connects the old buildings to the new planned buildings.

These are built as independent wings linked to this axis that facilitates orientation and commuting fast between the different areas. The masterplan is meant to be realised over three major construction phases.

The first phase (2002-2015) unfolded with the construction of the new Clinic, the first part of the «Magistrale», the new underground Garage, the landscaping of the main square, the « W »-Building, and the Waste processing and supplying building.

The second phase (2012-2017) consists in the renovation and topping up of the existing buildings, the construction of the bed-hospital, the South-wing, the X-ray therapy building, and the adaptation of the infrastructures.

The third phase (2017-2025) corresponds to the restoration and re-organising of remaining existing buildings and the extension of the connecting axis.

I was involved in the project for the development of a masterplan detailling the third phase. The project had run for about 15 years and it involved complex functionalities and a large program to get familiar with in a short time. As a large scale project, I needed to get to know the big picture as well as the specificities of the different areas.

We were planning different chronological scenarios to be studied.

We had to find temporary solutions for the different hospital sections to keep working during the constructions phases and how to introduce step by step the new planned functions.

The project required to deal with a vast architectural programm and to understand the functionnality of the complex.

Some drafts have also been made for the designing of new buildings.

I worked on this hospital complex project during my first work experience in the spanish office, San Juan Arquitectura. It was the winning project of a public competition for the city of PeĂąiscola.

The project was in its final phases and we defined all technical details. I was responsible for the drawing of 86

overall sections as well as carpentry and facade details.

So I had the opportunity to improve my constructive skills and my efficiency in 2D drawing on Autocad. The synergy with experienced architects has also taught me better teamwork efficiency on this type of complex building planning.

Within the San Juan Arquitectura office I also was part of the team responsible for the JosĂŠ-Tomas music conservatory.

We were in the construction plans phase and I had tasks on different fields of the project : rectifying plans and facades, drawing and referencing the carpentries, laying out the plans on large formats for the client, plans of details, etc.

This experience has permitted me to overview the complexity of the building and see the exhaustive elements that are to be defined until the construction begins and for the budget planning.

Arriving towards the entrance of the main hall.

The SMAC project is set between the Loire river and the prairie, at the East end of the Pinette island in a vast natural territory, and close to an interchange of the ring road of Nantes.

The project is an artistic complex dedicated to contemporary music.

The building leaves its mark on the identity of the place and radiates at

the Nantes city level. One of the major challenges was to find a dialogue between nature and architecture with regards and respect to the surrounding landscape.

The programme of the building includes two stages, a restaurant, a multimedia library, rehearsal studios and administration offices.

From the inside, we can experience different «space sequences» that open or shut by multiplying across over sights and orientations.

The pathways of the island are continued inside the building by trying to maintain fluid walking areas and to allow strategic points of view to the landscape.

In the context of reinvestment of the Loire riverside, it felt important to me that this territorial dynamic, the creation of public space, and the densification of cultural activity don’t hinder the value of the Loire islands.

The integration of the SMAC tries here to reveal and qualify more these islands and their naturality.

Transformation of an industrial plot - Granada, Spain ESCUELA TÉCNICA SUPERIOR DE GRANADA 2009

«Los Talleres» is a project situated at the fringes of the city of Granada, in an industrial area and at the location of former car garages.

The site is bounded on the North by an operational railway and by a crop plain on the South.

The first wish was to preserve the initial buildings at the edges of the site for their restoration into housings, workplaces, library and bar.

Covered parkings are gathered at the border of the road, in order to obtain an intimate block and maintain the cars outside the site.

In the center of the site we introduce patio houses and a community building for leisure and childhood activities.

In the North part of the site, a respite is created with the presence of a large public place on which the housings, and the public equipments are orientated : the library, the bar and the community building.

The trees already present along the railway are brought out. The strong idea for the restoration of the 98

former garages is the re-use of the modular opening system on their facade to open houses to the outside.

This way, public space becomes an extension of the houses. Free intermediate spaces are saved in the buildings to set winter gardens that are for inhabitants spaces to customize and to share.
