A Letter from the Directors Greetings from Machakos! 2020. What a year! On behalf of our children, our families, and our team, we want to thank all our friends and donors for your generous and unwavering support during the most challenging year in memory. During a time when we’ve seen so many similar organizations close their doors, we are deeply grateful that your support helped keep Jitegemee open, operational and supporting our children in need.

CHALLENGES OF 2020 We started 2020 with great energy and high hopes, and like the rest of the world, we found ourselves scrambling to make sense of the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic. As schools across Kenya closed, we helped our students return home safely. Schools remained closed until January 2021. To date, Kenya has had over 174,000 COVID-19 cases and over 3,000 deaths. While these numbers pale in comparison with other nations, the burden placed on our healthcare system and the impact of the numerous lockdowns has been devastating. Nobody has felt this more than the vulnerable children and families we support.

However, despite the challenges of 2020, we remain hopeful and used the year to learn how to adapt and be flexible, even in the face of great adversity. What did we learn to do differently?

FOOD COMES FIRST Our parents rely on daily wages to feed their families.

So the lockdown was devastating and our children were soon facing food shortages. Jitegemee quickly adjusted the feeding program from providing daily meals to providing monthly food packages and distributing these to our 163 families. As the economy struggled, we also saw the neediness increase in our community. We further expanded our feeding program and distributed food packages to 40 families living on the streets of Machakos.

REMOTE EVERYTHING Working from home posed challenges for our team, some of whom did not previously have internet access. But we rallied around each other and used mobile phones and other resources to stay in contact.

As soon as it was safe to do so, we returned to our offices, masked and distanced. The bulk of our work remained online and our team provided support to students who tried to continue their studies.

Our phone bills soared as we conducted calls with students who struggled with challenges related to the pandemic. We partnered with M-Shule – a mobile phone app that allows primary school students to revise their work. Our children were happy to continue school work using their parents’ phones.

CHALLENGES OF POVERTY DURING COVID It was heartbreaking to be distanced from our students at a time when so many of them needed even more support. Being at home resulted in increases in domestic violence and physical or sexual abuse. As we return in 2021, we have seen the impact of the past 10 months of lockdown, particularly on our girls – some of whom dropped out of school or training due to pregnancy, early marriage, or the need to find work. Our team continues to work closely with our children and families to ensure all are cared for and find their way back to their educational path.

LOOKING FORWARD As we enter 2021, we are hopeful that our students will catch up on the lost learning in 2020 and we’re expecting a busy year with our adjusted school year.

While the pandemic is far from over, with the vaccine rolling out, and ongoing support from our partners, we have much to be hopeful about.

Change for Good The COVID-19 pandemic created many challenges and brought about change for Jitegemee in 2020.

Among them were procedures for keeping our children, staff, and campus safe, which included implementing social distancing, the use of face masks, temperature checks and handwashing.

4 University graduates in 2020 Congratulations to our 2020 University graduates! We are so proud of you for overcoming the challenges you have to get to this wonderful achievement!

• Meshack Wambua Nzioka graduated from Egerton University with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Statistics. Meshack also qualified at a CPA while at university. In 2018, he was awarded Jitegemee’s Alex Zakayo Scholarship for postgraduate studies.

• Christabel Makau graduated from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, with a Bachelor’s degree in Science (Mathematics). In 2020, she was awarded Jitegemee’s Alex Zakayo Scholarship for post-graduate studies.

• Faith Mwende graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts.

• Peter Nyadongo, graduated from Uwezo College with a certificate in ICT.

From the streets to the healthcare frontline “The job is demanding and tough, only worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, but I am glad I am here to be part of the first line of defense to ensure people in my community stay safe.”

In 2003, James Muema, now 29, was living on the streets of Machakos. His mother had left and remarried across the country, his father had passed away, and his grandparents were his caregivers. They didn’t have much money and struggled to care for and put all three children left in their care through school.

At age 13, James felt he needed to help take care of his two younger siblings and dropped out of Mumbuni Primary School a year before completing his primary schooling. He would stand outside major supermarkets in Machakos town and offer to carry the luggage of shoppers to the bus stop at a fee. One day, he was approached by Alex Mutiso, Jitegemee Founding Teacher, and after getting to know him, agreed to join Jitegemee’s rehabilitation program.

“Mr Alex was gifted as a teacher to gauge whether someone was best placed for formal education like I was, or those best suited for vocational training to ensure we had a future. I am very grateful to him, he gave me hope, motivated me and showed me I had options for my future to become self-sustainable,” James says.

In 2004, James completed Primary School and went to High School. But even with financial and other support offered from Jitegemee, he saw his siblings were still struggling. The food at home was still insufficient and he once again went back to the only way he knew how to provide for them: the hustling life on the streets.

“Being out of school for two years, I found it hard to go back to school, worrying about what would happen to my family. But Mwalimu Alex never gave up on me, he would come to talk to me, eventually convincing me to go back to complete my education to secure a better future,” James recalls.

In 2006, James again joined High School which he completed and from there went on to college to study pharmaceutical studies. The Jitegemee team sought a variety of colleges and in 2012, James joined the

Nairobi Technical College. In 2014 he graduated with a Diploma in Pharmacy and interned at Kitui Referral Hospital, Kitui Town, Central Kenya. Two years later, James received his Pharmacist license to practice.

And then moved back to Nairobi where he worked for two years.

“Pharmacy carries all aspects of other medical practices from clinical, laboratory and nursing which I enjoy,” James observes.

Today, six years since his graduation, James is the Kitui Sub-county Pharmacist and Lead Pharmacist at Ikutha Level 4 Hospital in Kitui County. This means he manages pharmacies across the sub-county of Ikutha, which covers 46 health facilities.

James has gone the extra mile to approach development partners to support the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE). This supplements the shortfall of PPE from government supplies and helps ensure the safety of frontline workers at the health facilities he oversees.

“I am extremely grateful for Jitegemee and the donors. If it wasn’t for our donors, Jitegemee wouldn’t be able to keep supporting needy children in Kenya, like myself, who desperately need this support for a better future.”

feeding and nutrition Program 2020 reminded us how central our Feeding and Nutrition Program is to all our work at Jitegemee. We continue to hear words of gratitude from our children and parents for the food packages which kept them alive and hopeful through the challenging months of 2020.

We provide daily breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea to our vocational program students; students receiving school or university support also receive these meals during their school holidays. We also provide meals to parents or those attending training at Jitegemee. In a typical year, we serve around 50,000 meals. We know that hungry children cannot learn, and therefore it is critical for our students’ success that they receive daily meals.

Our families received monthly food packages of maize, beans, cooking oil, green grams, salt and also soap. Many of our parents have told us that it is thanks to these food packages that their family made it through 2020.

Street business school bears fruit In 2020, our Street Business School program continued to provide economic support to parents trying to provide for their families. 39 SBS graduates from 2019 continued to run their small businesses, such as selling vegetables, poultry farming, or basket-weaving.

“My name is Josephine Kyalo and I am a grandmother to two children I now raise after their mother died. I worked casual jobs to try to support my grandchildren. I farmed for neighbors, washed clothes and carried luggage for shoppers at market.

I worked these jobs because it is so hard to get employment without formal education. As a young girl, I never went to school and so lack skills that would help me get a job.

My grandchildren receive educational support from Jitegemee and in 2019, they provided me with an opportunity to learn new skills and start my business.

I joined the Jitegemee Street Business School – which

helped me start making money by raising poultry. I joined a group of women at Jitegemee and we spent six months learning how to hatch eggs, care for chicks, and keep chickens safe from disease.

We learnt how to start small, manage customer relations, money, and ensure profitability. This was exactly what I needed to support my family. I have purchased chicks and I am proudly self-employed! I now can support myself and my grandchildren with the money I receive from my poultry business. The future now looks a lot brighter for us all.”

Machakos clean energy project In 2019, Jitegemee established the Machakos Clean Energy Project (MCEP), funded by the United Nations Development Programme’s GEF Small Grants Programme, to promote clean energy in Machakos and provide our parents with the opportunity to generate a sustainable income.

Jitegemee parents and alumni have become clean energy product sales agents, after receiving training on clean energy product knowledge, sales, and customer service. Before COVID-19 struck in March 2020, our sales agents had sold and distributed over 200 clean energy products in Machakos County, contributing to the fight against climate change.

During the 2020 lockdown, our sales agents were unable to do door-to-door sales, and instead used social media and phone calls to reach their customers. As Kenya reopens in 2021, this project will continue, and we are optimistic that this initiative will continue to have a positive and sustaining impact on our parents, our graduates, our community and our environment.

2020 financials Our 2020 expenditure was $225,316, and we raised a total of $300,054, which includes $8,263 in in-kind donations. Below is the breakdown of how we spent funds across our program, as is the breakdown of where our donations came from.

In 2020, almost 50% of our grant income was from grants that were disbursed directly to our Kenya office, rather than our USA office. This is a significant shift from our funding in the past, and one we are proud of. Historically grants have been awarded to our USA entity and funds are then disbursed to our Kenya office. We also started earning income from our shamb a (farm) on our campus, and in 2020 earned $874 from sale of eggs and vegetables. In

addition to income to the program, our parent sales agents collectively earned over $750 from sales of clean energy products, as part of our Machakos Clean Energy Project, funded by the United Nations Development Program. *Please note, this financial reporting is on an accrual basis but our 2020 USA tax filings are on a cash basis

thank you donors We are deeply grateful that 2020 was another year where we felt the generosity of our extended Jitegemee family. Thank you all for giving so much and continuing to make our work possible. This year we raised $291,791 (approx. Ksh30,346,264), and received $8,263 (Ksh859,352) in in-kind donations.

Stronger together.

In 2020, we received $291,000 in donations, ranging from larger multi-year grants to individual donations made on Facebook. We are grateful for every donation, no matter how small or big, as it is our community of donors that makes our work possible. We are particularly grateful to those who gave in 2020, despite the challenges faced by so many during that year.

We extend a special thanks to Segal Family Foundation for their ongoing support that goes far beyond our multi-year grant. We are also most grateful for the grants and additional support we received in 2020 from Elma Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme’s Small Grants Programme, both of which showed flexibility and additional support during a challenging year. We are also most grateful that we were awarded a loan through the US Government’s Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program, as part of the USA’s COVID-19 stimulus support.

IN HONOR OF THE KAPLAN FAMILY In December 2020, we had a ceremony to open our new Kaplan Family Foundation Youth Hub. The Hub was unveiled by Elijah Omoyo, Assistant County Commissioner, Machakos County. The Kaplan Family Foundation has been a longtime donor to Jitegemee, and back in 2003, gave us our very first donation of $5,000.

We will forever be grateful for Mr. Myron Kaplan and Dr. Annette Hollander and their family’s unwavering and generous support for Jitegemee’s children and families.

We are thrilled to name our Youth Hub in honor of the Kaplan Family, and know that this hub will provide a learning space for unemployed or underemployed youth in Machakos for many years to come. As part of our Economic Empowerment Program, young people will receive training on entrepreneurship, digital skills as well as job readiness. Again, a BIG Thank You to the Kaplan Family!

In-Kind DONATIONS also make a difference Although not reported as income, in-kind donations and revenue generated by our internal campus resources make a big difference for our children, families, and the Machakos community.

In 2020, Jitegemee received KSh 859,352 in in-kind donations. We also earned KSh86,560 in income from sales of eggs and vegetables from our campus shamba (farm). In addition, our shamba produced eggs, fruit and vegetables valued at KSh62,970 that was used to supplement our feeding program.

Our parents and children oversee our shamba, which produces spinach, onions, tomatoes, and also includes a poultry house. The revenue generated by our shamba is a small but important part of

our mission to become more self-sustaining as an organization.

As part of the UNDP-funded Machakos Clean Energy Project, our parents earned over KSh75,000 through the sale of clean energy products. We are so happy to see our families becoming more economically stable as a result of the support and training they’ve received from Jitegemee.

A salute to the jitegemee team We are proud of our team in Machakos for their dedicated and relentless support to the children and families we serve. In 2020, the team went above and beyond, while also dealing with the effects of the pandemic; trying to keep their families safe and some coping from the loss of loved ones. However, as always, they continued to put the welfare and safety of our children and families first and ensured their most fundamental needs were met; safely conducting monthly food distribution; ensuring younger students had access to mobile phone learning materials from M-Shule; and checking in regularly with our more vulnerable children and families.

We are so proud of Jennifer Katiwa, for being named an African Visionary Fellow by our long-term donor partner, Segal Family Foundation. Jennifer was part of a cohort of locally-based leaders of communitybased organizations who participated in weekly training and support and received professional resources that have strengthened Jitegemee over the past year. Congrats to Jennifer and thank you to Segal for recognizing Jennifer and Jitegemee in this way!

Bachelor’s Degree in Community Development Joshua Muema, School Support Manager Joshua joined the Jitegemee team in 2017 as our social worker, and at the time had a university diploma in social work. Since that time, he has been taking night classes at St Paul’s University and has received educational support from Jitegemee.

Thanks to his hard work, in 2020 Joshua graduated from St. Paul’s University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Development. Congratulations Joshua – your diligence is remarkable!

A big congratulations to Peter Muasya who was selected and graduated as a 2020 Metis Fellow. The Metis program develops the capacity of innovators leading high-quality education initiatives in their communities by providing them with tools, resources as well as mentorship.

meet miriam mativo, operations and finance Officer and jitegemee alum “If Jitegemee was not there for me I would not be here. I want to do even more. One day, I want to work for an international organisation, like the World Bank or the United Nations, which makes a global impact for those in need.”

At Jitegemee we love having our graduates join our team and give back to the organization that supported their education.

As a child, Miriam lost her mother at 10, and for a year was passed from one relative to another. Finally, Zipporah, her mother’s best friend took Miriam and her sister into her family of four children of her own.

The adjustment to a new family was challenging for Miriam, and Zipporah was struggling financially.

They connected with Jitegemee, and Miriam started receiving support for her schooling.

“Jitegemee made everything easier! I had a uniform, school shoes, they even paid for lunch and textbooks.

My only focus was to ensure I passed my exams and graduated from High School,” says Miriam.

Miriam worked extremely hard and scored 392 marks out of 500 in her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations, and joined Machakos Girls High School in 2008.

“The thought of someone giving their all so I can focus on my studies, was so comforting. I knew all I needed to focus on was working hard,” Miriam notes.

“It was nice coming back, but also quite an adjustment from my days as a student.

Miriam went on to succeed in high school and continued her studies at university. After graduating in 2016, from Laikipia University with a Bachelors in Economics, she worked in Machakos as a brand ambassador for Techno, a Chinese phone company.

When she saw a job opening at Jitegemee in 2019, she knew she wanted to put her skills and training to use for the organization that had provided her with solid foundation. She also wanted to contribute to the children following in her footsteps.

But this is just the beginning. Miriam wants to do more and use her skills in economics more extensively to support those in need.

Mwalimu Alex took me into Jitegemee when I was in class five when they started to support my education and now he is my colleague. It’s come full circle, which at times feels surreal,” Miriam remarks.

We are thrilled to have Miriam on our team and hope all her dreams for the future come to pass!

Staying Safe Our vocational graduates learned how to make reusable fabric face masks, and made over 350 masks that were distributed to our children and parents. We also distributed an additional 250 donated disposable face masks to our families to contribute to the safety of our community.
