WELCOME FROM THE EXECUTIVE

Welcome to the latest edition of the Enrichment Handbook for this academic year. The holistic education on offer at Jerudong International School has always provided exciting opportunities for co-curricular learning. We believe that taking part in activities outside of the classroom is as much benefit, if not more, to a student’s education.

Providing a broad and exciting enrichment programme requires a carefully thought out strategic plan for enrichment - one that maximises the opportunity for all students of all ages and abilities. For JIS, enrichment comprises our CCA programme, educational visits and enriched opportunities for service learning, active learning and creative learning.

This handbook allows you to see the whole programme on offer across the school year. We hope you enjoy reading about the opportunities available to students and if you have feedback or requests then please do not hesitate to get in touch with our dedicated enrichment team.

INTRODUCTION FROM THE ENRICHMENT TEAM

A fantastic suite of activities is planned for the new academic year.

We group the Enrichment programme under four main categories:

• Service learning

• Creativity and Arts

• Sports and Exercise

• Enriched Learning

These categories cover a very broad range of activities and interests and also fit into more formalised programmes that we deliver in school such as the IB Programme, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and Scouts. We hope that students will try to take part in activities across all of the groups, over an academic year.

Enrichment at Jerudong International School embodies our fundamental belief in providing a wellrounded education that extends far beyond the confines of traditional academics.

It’s about enriching the lives of our students by offering a diverse array of opportunities that stimulate their intellectual curiosity, nurture their talents and cultivate essential life skills.

Enrichment isn’t just about what happens within the classroom; it’s about providing a dynamic environment where students can explore their interests, discover new passions, and develop

Sport continues to offer new internal sports events, both competitive and non competitive. We aim to be inclusive but also want to provide our best sports people the opportunity to thrive.

Service Learning is an area we would like to continue to develop and encourage. Our fundraising activities have a student committee managing the funds and distribution through the JIS Student Community Fund.

into well-rounded individuals. Whether through arts, sports, community service or academic competitions, Enrichment at Jerudong International School is about empowering our students to thrive both inside and outside the classroom, preparing them for success in all facets of life.

SAFEGUARDING

Jerudong International School takes Child Protection seriously. Please be aware that CCTV is in operation at all times on the campus.

If you observe anything during your visit that makes you feel any concern for the safety and well being of a student, please approach a member of staff and ask to speak with one of our Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL’s).

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our students in accordance with Bruneian Law. Staff and Vistors are required to share this committment.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (CCA’S)

Last academic year (24-25) over 600 CCA’s were offered to students across the three School terms.

The graph below shows the percentage of Students in each Year Group that enrolled on at least 1 CCA throughout the year:

Co-Curricular Activities - Junior School

With over 80 CCA’s on offer each term to Junior School Students, from Art Lab to Gymnastics, from Fun With Science to What’s Cooking, and from Ballet to Karate, there is something for everyone!

Giving kids a chance to explore new ideas and build essential skills is at the heart of our Junior CCA Programme. We encourage all students to participate, to learn from their mistakes, to branch out with new skills and to work cooperatively with other students in social interactions. Learning has never been so fun!

With all our CCA’s, independent of the year groups they are available to, there are a range of different prices depending on factors like: equipment, location/ transportation, etc.

Co-Curricular Activities - Middle School (Year 7-9)

There are a large number of different CCA options on offer every term to Middle Year Students including those related to Music, Drama, Art, Eco-JIS, Scouts and Sports. With the range of activities available, there’s no doubt you’ll find something that suits your taste!

Our school is all about developing the whole person and CCA’s form a vital part of that process. Seizing the opportunities that are available is a big part of making the most of your chances of success in the long run. Get your friends together and join a club!

Co-Curricular Activities - Year 10 - 11

There is a broad range of CCA’s available to IGCSE Students. A unique activity that becomes available at this stage is the Duke of Edinburgh’s award. The Bronze International Award is open to Year 10 students and the Silver Award to Year 11 students.

Additionally, students have a broad spectrum of other activities to choose from at their fingertips. A few examples are Dance Groups, Drama, Music, Archery, Eco-JIS, Yoga, Robotics, STEM and Sports - you’ll definitely find something you like!

We strive to create an inclusive, welcoming and helpful environment in all our CCA’s - so don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new!

Co-Curricular Activities - Year 12 - 13

At JIS we encourage our most senior students to take advantage of all the opportunities available to them to prepare them for the real world. By completing the Gold International Award (Duke of Edinburgh), having the courage to step out on stage in one of our Drama productions, giving back to our community with the Borneo Project or being involved in the variety of Sports available at JIS, our students gain valuable lifelong skills that will shape them for the future.

With so much on offer, it’s easy to see why our most senior students at JIS are in a league of their own when they leave to take on the world!

Junior School CCA’s

The Junior School at JIS is focused on providing an academically challenging, as well as creative, holistic learning experience for all children. Our broad and varied curriculum is complimented by enriching opportunities to try new things and explore and develop interests. Children from Nursery to Year 6 regularly venture beyond the classroom in order to take part in activities that can range from sports to cooking, and from music to coding.

Throughout the year, our CCA programme (Link here) and innovative curriculum allows children to discover and develop their extracurricular interests; taking risks, experimenting and gaining confidence while expanding their range of skills. Every child has the chance to develop competency in the performing arts, sports, Art and DT amongst other areas.

Children across the Junior School take part in offsite educational visits where possible and when the aims of the trip cannot be met by our magnificent campus, with Year 4 to 6 taking part in residential trips which focus on developing leadership, team building, decision making and independence.

Student leadership helps to develop the whole child, and there are a range of opportunities throughout the Junior School. Our House Captains, Eco Representatives and School Council are active in developing competitions and events for their peers. The Polio Point reward system encourages an altruistic desire to progress and exemplify the Student Profile, and we have close links with a number of local charities.

Senior School CCA’s

Togetherness and Community are the two words that encapsulate the educational experience we strive for every child in the Senior School. We understand the great responsibility that every parent places with us by entrusting the education of their son or daughter with us and this is a responsibility that we take very seriously. Everybody in the Senior School at Jerudong International School (JIS) stives to ensure that not only does

every child reach their academic potential but as importantly are allowed to experience as holistic an education as possible. We want to create an atmosphere within the school that encourages every child in our care to move beyond their comfort zone, try something new and above all, have a fun and enriching time whilst doing it. JIS is a place where anything is possible and within the school we have an abundance of creative, sporting and service endeavours. I would encourage every student to try as many different enrichment experiences as possible during their time at JIS. Some of these will hopefully then develop into lifelong passions that help ensure a positive growth mindset where dreams can indeed become reality.

As a school we are continuing striving to be as sustainable as possible and above all we aim to inspire, positive, socially responsible global citizens who understand that local actions can have global effects. Above all, it is vital that our students understand that however small, their individual actions can have positive effects both within their community as well as the world beyond the school gates. Our Polio Points reward system challenges students to go beyond what they would normally do and achieve something memorable. This can take many forms, in the classroom, on the stage, in the sporting arena or working in a local NGO. Everything is possible at JIS, students just need to take the chance and try something new.

JIS is a safe, secure environment so to ensure that students do develop their own independent living skills, we encourage students in the Senior School to take part in the many educational visits that occur throughout their time here. From trekking in the rainforests of Brunei, to exploring the urban jungle of Singapore. We aim for every opportunity to be open to all - all we would ask of your children is that they volunteer for the ride!

1ST JERUDONG SCOUTS

Scouting exists to actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society. The aim is to prepare young people for the future and build stronger communities.

Scouts are encouraged to ‘do their best’ for themselves and for others. Scouts are kind, considerate and always ready to help other people. The founder of Scouts, Lord Baden-Powell wrote, “A Scout is a friend to all”.

1st Jerudong Scout Group is part of the UK Scout Association and has different sections for different age groups:

• Beavers (6-8 year olds - Y1-2)

• Cubs (8-10.5 year olds - Y3-5)

• Scouts (10.5-14 year olds - Y6-9)

Each section meets weekly, during term-time, and is led by a team of leaders who guide the Beavers/Cubs/Scouts to try new things, learn new skills and have lots of fun.

Whilst part of the CCA Programme, Scouting is much more than a term CCA! It is expected that students who join one of the sections work towards being invested into the Scouting Movement and progress through the Scouting Sections whilst at JIS attending the CCA in each Term of the academic year. If they leave JIS they can join another Scout Group - a benefit of being part of a worldwide movement.

Outdoor Education (Term 2 & 3, 2025)

Migrant Activity ( Year 4) 7th Jan

On January 7, Year 4 students at JIS took par t in a hands-on learning activity linked to their Unit of Work on ‘Moving People’. They role-played as refugees, packing a small day sack from home and being told there was an emergency requiring them to leave immediately. After gathering at a simulated 'Refugee Centre', they walked to a campsite where they built shelters using a limited star ter pack and foraged materials. The activity aimed to build empathy and raise awareness of refugee experiences, while also developing teamwork and communication skills. It ties in with their class novel The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf.

Fossil hunters! ( Y3) 15th January

Year 3 classes at JIS par ticipated in a fossil-hunting outdoor learning activity at the school campsite to kick off their new topic. Equipped with trowels, brushes, and collection pots, students learned about fossils and excavation techniques before exploring a dig site where staff had hidden real fossils. They discovered items like trilobites, shark teeth, coral, and more, sparking excitement and curiosity The activity ignited students' enthusiasm and imagination, with some even continuing their fossil hunt during lunchtime.

Bronze D of E Practice Adventurous Journey 1 ( Y10) 18-19th January

73 Year 10 students took par t in the first Bronze International Award Practice Adventurous Journey Over two days, they hiked more than 8km with a 500m elevation gain through Bukit Silat’s tough jungle terrain, facing steep climbs, river crossings, and rope descents. Wildlife sightings included snakes, insects, and a rare viper At their custom-built school campsite, students set up tents, cooked meals, enjoyed a campfire, and par ticipated in night walks or stargazing. Day two included a trek through jungle, tunnels, and along breezy beaches. The trip challenged students physically and mentally, helping build resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Bronze D of E Practice Adventurous Journey 2 ( Y10) 1-2

February

It was another epic jungle and beach adventure as 42 students, the second par t of our huge Bronze cohor t, took on their Practice Adventurous Journey in Bukit Silat & along the beaches to Berakas. Camaraderie, friendship, fun, challenges overcome & memories to last a lifetime! These experiences really do empower young people to develop skills such as resilience, adaptability, creativity, problem solving, decision-making and communication.

1st Jerudong Scouts Investiture - 3 February

There was much excitement at the investiture of the newest Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of the 1st Jerudong Scouts. Parents were invited to attend and all new recruits gave their promise before receiving their unique neckerchief and badges from Principal Nick Sheehan and Head of Lower School Paul Bannister New leaders also received a neckerchief! After photos of each section the cubs and scouts demonstrated how to light a fire & toast the perfect marshmallow!

Winter Camp - 6 February

annual Winter Camp is intended to give prospective boarding students a taste what JIS and Brunei can offer. In February, it was a pleasure to take some Chinese and Korean students to Temburong where they were taken up the river Batang Duri to Ulu Temburong National Park. After registering, we climbed 900 steps to the canopy walkway where we scaled the ladders 50 metres up the canopy for breathtaking views. It’s a highlight of any visit to Brunei and a eminder of how lucky we are to live in a country which is still so over 60% est. After taking in the sights and sounds of the canopy, we descended & a shor t way down the river for a swim in a waterfall. Finally we zoomed the rapids back to Batang Duri for a delicious lunch of traditional, local bamboo chicken. The students seemed to have a great time on their rainforest adventure, and hopefully left with a lasting impression of Brunei’s natural splendour!

Gold D of E Practice Adventurous Journey 1 ( Y12) 8-9 February

In Brunei it is often the heat we have to contend with, but, for 32 students on their first Gold Practice Adventurous Journey, it was relentless rain and mud! Saturday saw them complete the testing 13km ‘Bridge to Bridge’ route along the Kota Batu ridge, with 400m elevation gain, and, on Sunday, they tackled the potentially more challenging ‘9 hills’ of Bukit Shabandar over a similar distance, with even more elevation gain. What made the latter even more arduous was the relentless rain turning the deeply fissured paths into waterfalls with pools of unknown depths, hiding roots and rocks. We scrambled up and down, battling through the water, mud and vegetation & students were tested to their limits. Excellent preparation for the challenges they will face in Malaysian Borneo or China on their Qualifying Adventurous Journey Before that, there will be one final practice! Congratulations to all the students who conquered the trails and the elements!

Silver D of E Qualifying Adventurous Journey 1 ( Y11) 7-9 February

From February 7–9, Year 11 students completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Adventurous Journey with a 3-day, 2-night expedition in Ulu Temburong National Park. After hiking upriver from Batang Duri to set up camp, they trekked to a waterfall on day two for lunch and a swim. The final day began at 4am with a boat ride and a challenging climb to the 50m-high canopy walkway, where they witnessed the rainforest waking up. Despite rain, tough terrain, and personal fears, students showed resilience and teamwork. Staff praised them as one of the most accomplished Silver groups to date.

Pitcher plant Dissection ( Y9) 11 February

On February 11, Year 9 students explored plant adaptations through an outdoor dissection of pitcher plants at the JIS campsite. They learned how these carnivorous plants have evolved to thrive in Borneo’s nutrient-poor soils by digesting insects for minerals. Students hypothesized about the pitcher’s liquid proper ties and insect-trapping mechanisms before collecting equipment and carefully harvesting pitcher samples. They measured the fluid volume, tested its pH (around 2), and examined insect remains—finding ants, mosquito larvae, and even a grasshopper Exciting discoveries included pitcher plant crab spiders, sparking discussion and curiosity The lesson was hands-on, engaging, and memorable for the students.

Wild Robots! ( Y3) 10 April

Silver D of E Qualifying Adventurous Journey

2 ( Y11) 14-16 February

Our second cohor t of 21 Year 11 students completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Adventurous Journey with a 3-day, 2-night expedition in Temburong. After crossing the Temburong Bridge and river by boat, they hiked through challenging rainforest terrain to set up camp. Activities included swimming, water filtering, cooking, and a night walk revealing scorpions and other wildlife. Day two featured a hike to the scenic Sungai Panji waterfall, blowpipe practice, and spotting the rare Heteropoda davidbowie spider. On day three, students climbed over 900 steps before sunrise to the canopy walkway, where they were rewarded with views, gibbon calls, and sightings of rhinoceros hornbills. The trip was physically demanding, immersive, and deeply memorable.

The whole of year 3 went on an adventure to the beach. This trip was par t of a unit of work linked to the book ‘The Wild Robot’ by Peter Brown. The children were shown the video hook - a news repor t about how 15 shipping containers had fallen into the sea in Keppel Terminal in Singapore, with items expected to wash up in Brunei & Malaysia. The children then set off to hike via the campsite, through the jungle and the tunnel, to the beach. There they looked for, and found, ‘robot par ts’ and electronic components with instructions (these had been placed on the beach ahead of time). It was a fantastic way to engage the students and introduce the topic and will lead into them designing their own robots. What I love about taking learning out of the classroom is how engaged the students were, not just in the task but the environment. We saw mud skippers at the end of the tunnel, as well as swiftlets and a bat inside. The children caught and released ghost crabs and hermit crabs & hypothesised about why the former make sand bubbles. They collected shells and interesting stones which looked like fossils or sharks’ teeth and played in the shallows. It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning with so much learning & engagement. Thank you to the Y3 team for providing this fantastic adventure for the Y3 students.

Year 8 Year Group Camp - Temburong ( Y8) 14-17 April

In April, Year 8 students at JIS took par t in a two-day outdoor education camp in Temburong focused on building confidence, resilience, and teamwork. Split into two cohor ts, students began with trust-building activities at OBBD, including a 250m flying fox, a challenging climbing wall, and rafting to Sumbiling Eco Village. Encouragement from peers helped many overcome fears and complete the activities. Day two featured survival skill rotations such as shelter building, fire star ting, and water filtering, with students taking on leadership roles and being scored on teamwork. Mornings began with yoga, and evenings ended with karaoke and marshmallows. With no phones allowed, students bonded deeply through shared experiences, games, and reflection, making it a memorable and empowering adventure.

Year 4 Year Group Camp - on campus ( Y4) 17-18 April

Year 4 students enjoyed their first-ever overnight camp, designed as a gentle introduction to camping away from home. After dinner, they played ‘Capture the Flag’ and set up tents in the school gym for a comfor table indoor camping experience. The evening featured a magical campfire with songs, games, stories, and marshmallows. The next morning, students packed up early and hiked through jungle and a tunnel to the beach, spotting wildlife like swiftlets, a bat, and mudskippers. At the beach, they collected natural materials for ar t and explored the shoreline. Back at school, they took par t in activity rotations including Beach Ar t, Yoga, Football, and an Escape Room. Though tired, all students left with joyful memories of their first camp experience.

OFFSEAS Conference 26-27 April

I was thrilled to be able to represent JIS at OFFSEAS - The Outdoor Forum For South East Asian Schools 2025 in Bangkok. I presented about our Outdoor Education provision and it was great to be able to share some of the things we’re doing at Jerudong International School and the session was well received. It was also great to make and reinforce connections with many of the external providers we work with as well as colleagues working in outdoor education in other schools.

Bronze D of E Qualifying Adventurous Journey 1 ( Y10) 26-27 April

I’d prepped all the kit in advance, including 95 rucksacks, tents, Trangias, water filters, toilet tents & buckets and plenty of other items. The one-man positivity machine that is Ralph Morel, led 70 Y10 students, guided by 9 Award Leaders, on their Bronze Qualifying Adventurous Journey. We’d had to make some late changes to the route, due to par ts of the originally planned route being inaccessible. Maps had been redrawn & buses redirected, but we’d come up with a good solution. Students did very well on what was a challenging hike in very warm conditions. For the first time in their D of E journey they camped off site - at Tungku beach After setting up camp and cooking dinner there was a chance to enjoy the sunset on the beach. Sunday saw them do a shor ter hike and beach clean, removing washed up plastic & reflecting on human impacts on the environment, which links to many of their team goals. They collected 75 bags of plastic bottles and other rubbish, which hints at the extent of the problem. A real team effor t was needed to decamp & return to school, clean all the equipment & pack it into the stores.

Scouts Overnight Camp ( Y1-Y9)

3-4 May

Gold D of E Practice Adventurous Journey 2 ( Y12) 26-27

April

The second Practice Adventurous Journey for the 31 Y12 students working towards their Gold Award took place in April. On the Saturday they faced a challenging circumnavigation of Bukit Shabandar’s infamous 14 hills which saw conditions fluctuating between baking heat and deep mud. The majority of the students are preparing for their Qualifying Adventurous Journey in China, so they were (literally) cooking on gas , as this is what they will be doing there. We couldn’t stretch to impor ting yak meat, but there were some creative dishes & thoughtful menu planning. A smaller cohor t will be doing their QAJ in Mulu, Sarawak, Malaysia, so cooked using the Trangias that they will be using there. The campsite is looking a bit more natural with some grass coverage & the teams camped on our pondoks. Sunday involved some deep water to wade through on the old fire trail & a lovely little vine snake, Ahaetulla prasina. Thank you to John van der Marel, and the whole Gold team for your suppor t of the students in their final preparations for the biggest adventure of their lives!

JIS hosted its annual Scout Camp on Friday, the highlight of the scouting year, with Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts all taking par t. Y1 Beavers joined for the afternoon and evening, while Y2+ Beavers and Cubs camped overnight in the Spor ts Hall—some for the first time away from family Scouts camped at the pondoks, building fires, preparing food, and setting up tents. Activities included scavenger hunts, games, fire-cooked meals, marshmallow toasting, and campfire songs. The next morning featured breakfast, a scout-led tracking trail, wide games, a string trail, and a campsite gate built using pioneering skills. The camp celebrated leadership, resilience, teamwork, and the joy of outdoor learning.

Bronze D of E Qualifying Adventurous Journey 2 ( Y10)

3-4 May

The second cohor t of 48 Year 10 students completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Adventurous Journey over the weekend. Despite forecasted storms, the weather held up as students hiked a new scenic route through Bukit Silat, stopping for lunch and a refreshing dip at Wasai Berapi. After refilling water at school, they continued through jungle and beach to their off-site campsite, which required extensive logistical prep. Students set up tents, played games, enjoyed a sunset walk, and cooked dinner together A highlight was discovering and handling a rare sunbeam snake. Day two included a beach clean-up where students collected 60 bags of plastic waste, followed by sea play, decamping, and hiking back to school. It was a weekend full of teamwork, adventure, and meaningful experiences—away from phones and full of real connection.

Materials & Marshmallows ( Y1) 9 May

To wrap up their unit of learning on materials and their proper ties, our Year 1 students put their knowledge into action by working together to build shelters at the campsite, using a variety of different materials, including bamboo, tarpaulins, sticks and ropes made of cotton and plastic. They discussed which materials would be most suitable for strength, waterproofing, and stability They worked together, with only a little assistance from the Y1 teacher team, to tie knots, carry poles and thread ropes. After testing out their creations, they were rewarded with a special treat - gathering around the campfire to toast marshmallows. This was the first time some of the students had done this and they were surprised at the heat of the fire & the changes to the texture of the marshmallow once toasted. This was a great Friday morning out of the classroom with some real hands-on experience of materials and their proper ties. Thank you to the Y1 team for giving the students such a great oppor tunity

Gopeng Year Group Camp (Y9) 8-13 June

Fifty-one students and six teachers went on an unforgettable 6-day residential at Nomad Adventures Ear th Camp in Gopeng, Malaysia. From caving through Gua Kandu and whitewater rafting on Sungai Kampar (with water safety training) to mastering outdoor cooking, wilderness first aid and tackling high ropes at the award-winning Mountain School. They even hiked to the summit of Bukit Batu Putih for a breathtaking sunset. Throughout the week, students pushed themselves beyond their comfor t zones, embraced new challenges and grew as collaborative teams. We had some superb feedback from students and parents about the activities and they even loved not having their phones. We couldn’t be prouder of their courage, determination and positive spirit.

Science & Earth Week (Whole School) 16-20th June

JIS celebrated an inspiring week of outdoor learning, science exploration, and environmental action. A major highlight was the BioBlitz with Nature Wave, themed around Borneo Biodiversity With over 172 par ticipants—including students, staff, and families—625 species observations were recorded, 81 of which were new to Brunei’s iNaturalist database. Student Lina stood out with 100 entries, and a rare assassin bug (Eulyes preciosa) was discovered by staff member Chad Baxter The initiative showcased the power of citizen science in combating biodiversity loss.

The week was also filled with exciting cross-campus collaborations, with Junior School students visiting Senior labs for activities like synthetic blood-making, space exploration, and escape room challenges—many led by older students. Other highlights included Jungle Dave’s animal talk, Y7 raft races, dramatic science demos, a VEX robotics showcase, and interactive STEM carnivals.

Ear th Day was marked with a Zero Waste Picnic at the ODC, featuring student-run green businesses and conservation talks by 1StopBorneo Wildlife and Monkey Guardians. The week concluded with tree planting and the installation of bird and bat boxes built by Y7 students, emphasizing JIS’s commitment to leadership, sustainability, and a stronger bond with nature.

Enrichment Week - Outdoor Adventures (Y7-12) 30 June - 3 July

Our school year ended with an exciting, action-packed week of outdoor adventures for the lucky students who had chosen this programme for their Enrichment Week. The week unfolded as follows:

● Monday: Wall climbing at UP Climbing Centre, including a speed climbing ‘knockout’ competition, with pairs racing up two adjacent routes. It was hotly contested & support from peers was tremendous. In the afternoon we went to Hutan Simpan Berakas for mountain biking with Kingdom Rides. It’s safe to say, coming down was much easier than going up! Great determination & courage was shown, especially by our less experienced riders.

● Tuesday: In the morning students were given a beach survival challenge - teams had to construct something that would aid them in either survival or rescue with limited resources & what they could find on the beach. The winning team had constructed a simple shelter, attempted a solar still to get fresh water from sea water, and made an SOS signal. After lunch, the teams competed to find 12 hidden caches on campus, using a map & some clues then solved on anagram to win a prize.

● Wednesday: We went to Temburong for jungle survival training with Kommunihub. We attempted to make fire by friction, using the bow drill method and made rope by plaiting together the stripped veins from the lamba plant (Molineria latifolia). This rope was then used to make shelters, in teams. They were then shown how to construct a noose and spring snare, then had a go themselves. Finally, they practiced using a ‘sumpit’ (blowpipe) to hit a target (life-sized squirrel) at 6m. In the afternoon we climbed Bukit Patoi - 2K up & 2K down but nearly 300m of elevation gain.

● Thursday: Temburong again. It was an extravaganza of climbing & zip lining at Freme Rainforest Resort in the morning, then a boat ride up river (an adventure in itself as the water was low & the crew needed sticks to push!) to swim in waterfall pools & tube downstream.

HOUSE ACTIVITIES

We take great pride in our House System at JIS, where House sports play a significant role. Participation in these sports goes beyond physical activity; it fosters a sense of community and belonging among our students. These events not only promote teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship but also serve as a platform for students to showcase their talents in a supportive yet competitive environment, ultimately boosting their self-esteem and confidence. Additionally, House sports encourage a healthy lifestyle and provide students with a refreshing break from academic pressures. At JIS, we firmly believe that House Sports are indispensable to our students’ holistic development, nurturing pride, camaraderie, and a strong sense of support within our school community.

"The

The JIS Dive Club!

ocean stirs the hear t, inspires the imagination, and brings

eternal joy to the soul." – Rober t Wyland

At JIS, we believe in providing our students with unique oppor tunities to connect with the incredible natural world around us Living in Brunei, we are incredibly for tunate to be on the doorstep of not only some vibrant and biodiverse coral reefs, but also multiple fascinating shipwrecks This year, we are thrilled to offer both the PADI Open Water and, for the first time, the PADI Open Water Advanced cer tificates through our par tner Oceanic Quest Allowing students to explore this underwater wonderland firsthand!

How does getting the cer tification work?

There are two par ts to gaining this cer tificate. The first par t is learning the theory! Traditionally, this is done by reading the course materials online, however at JIS, the instructors come to us and teach the different sections in person in the classroom. This much more personable approach allows the children to ask questions, gain a deeper understanding of diving and also get to know their instructors prior to getting in the water (and vice versa!) Once the children have completed the theory, it’s time for par t 2 getting wet! The children will take par t in two pool days (at the weekend) where they will put their theory into practice in the safety of the pool Both diving instructors and fully qualified diving JIS staff members will be present, and this is about practising the skills until the children are confident The following weekend, we will then move on to diving in the sea, a very exciting day! The children will continue to practise their skills and after demonstrating them to their instructor, will get signed off and be fully cer tified divers! Your child has now automatically become a member of the JIS dive club!

What is the JIS dive club?

Diving is very much one of those ‘ use it, or lose it’ skill sets and so it is impor tant that the children have the chance to continue diving and hone their skills That’s where the JIS Dive Club comes in! We regularly organise fun dives, visiting and exploring the different dive sites around Brunei It also gives the children the oppor tunity to meet other like minded people in our community! It isn't just about learning to dive; it's about forging strong friendships and shared memories with like-minded peers who are just as passionate about adventure and marine life as you are! You’ ll also be given a JIS Dive Club t-shir t!

Yes! Our enthusiasm for diving naturally extends to a commitment to protecting the marine environments we are for tunate to experience Living in Brunei, we are surrounded by coral reefs that need our care The JIS Dive Club provides students with oppor tunities to become active par ticipants in looking after these ecosystems by volunteering with Reef Check, a recognised international charity dedicated to coral reef conservation

Through the Dive Club and working with Reef Check, you can get involved in impactful, hands-on activities that make a real difference:

Building New Coral Reef Nurseries: Our students can get involved in the fascinating process of building and maintaining underwater coral nurseries. This involves carefully preparing structures where small fragments of coral can grow, nur turing them until they are strong enough to be out-planted onto frames, essentially "gardening" our oceans back to health

Dive Against Debris: Sadly, human impact can be seen even in the most pristine environments Reef Check regularly organises and par ticipates in ‘Dive Against Debris’ Equipped with mesh bags and a keen eye, divers systematically remove harmful debris like plastic, fishing nets, and other rubbish that can smother corals and endanger marine life It's a direct, tangible way to clean up our underwater backyard

Coral Reef Surveys: This is where your diving skills truly become scientific tools! Students can be trained to par ticipate in Reef Check's comprehensive coral reef surveys. This involves identifying and counting species of fish, inver tebrates, and corals, as well as assessing the overall health of the reef The data collected by our student divers contributes to a global database, providing vital information to marine scientists and policymakers working to protect coral reefs worldwide You'll be par t of a global movement, gathering real data that drives conservation action

DRAMA

This term has, once again, been a very big term for both Drama and Music with multiple projects and performances taking place.

During Term 1, live performance remained a key focus with a varied range of student performance opportunities made available. As well as the many house organised lunchtime concerts, this term saw the ‘No Black Tie’ event held in the refurbished Black Box and the Camerata performing. We welcomed back the Gurkha Pipe and Drums and martial arts teams to join us in our annual International Day celebrations. Students performances included: songs in Malay, Gulingtangan and Indian dance. The end of term saw the Year 9 Music students giving lunchtime performances as part of their coursework and the JIS Jazz Band will be featuring in the end of year assembly.

With generous support from JIS, funds were made available for the equipping of a professional podcast room. The music department now delivers a weekly Pod Casting Club with students involved in all aspects of the production of a weekly podcast. This makes for a total of 14 weekly CCAs with further opportunities to come in Term 2.

Drama and Music (along with many students and staff from other departments) worked incredibly hard on ‘The Addams Family’ (the Senior Musical) this Term. ‘The Addams Family’ was a hugely successful show that showcased the amazing talent we have here at JIS! Performers on stage and musicians in the orchestra pit performed and played their hearts out for three sell out shows!

Backstage there were incredible student teams, supported by staff in; set painting, hair and makeup, set construction, stage management, costume and prop teams that made the production look, sound and feel as professional as it did. Each of these teams are built up of students and staff that devote countless hours to make a production like Addams possible. At JIS we aim to get as many jobs as possible to be done by students within the process. These students have amazing staff supporting and facilitating the work, supporting the students throughout the entire production. A production like this is only possible with a huge amount of people donating their time to ensure everything gets built, painted, sewn, wired up and made ready for the show. An amazing team!

In addition to the Senior Musical the Drama and Music departments also staged the Year 5 Production of Citizen Change, a play that explored the ‘Teaspoons of Change’ our students can make to ensure they make a real difference in the world. The Year 6 production Leadership….Dude! An Excellent Adventure! was a play that explored the idea of what makes a great leader. The new leader of the universe travelled through space and time to learn lessons about what makes a great leader.

Next term, even more opportunities and projects await!

• The Signup Workshop and Auditions for the Junior Musical are planned to take place in March. All students who take part in the Signup Workshop will be given a place in the cast, and any student who feels like they would like to audition for a Principal role can sign up for the auditions straight afterwards on the same day.

• Rehearsals will start in Week 1 of Term 3.

ARTS CENTRE

JIS Arts Centre is the main space for the Performing Arts at Jerudong International School, and one of the best in Brunei. The Arts Centre Team offers a CCA in conjunction with the major Music & Drama Productions throughout the year. This is an opportunity for students to become part of a professional theatre technical team, providing firstclass technical support to the performers on stage.

As well as providing our students with rehearsal and performance opportunities in a professional environment, the Arts Centre is available for outside commercial hire. We host a range of events, many of which are open to the school community and the general public.

Please visit our website www.jisartscentre. com for more information.

Education for Sustainable Development (EfSD)

We are immensely proud of the students and staff at JIS for their unwavering dedication and meaningful contributions to a wide array of sustainability initiatives throughout the year Their collective effor ts have led to the school being awarded the prestigious FEE Green Flag, a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship

From tree planting, aluminium can collections, and launching a brand new Plastic Recycling Hub, to beach clean-ups, reef ball deployment, and composting food waste, our school community has worked tirelessly to turn awareness into action

These initiatives form par t of our commitment to the Eco Code: “A Teaspoon of Change for a Sustainable Brunei”, and align with our school-wide theme of Climate Emergency, explored through four key subthemes:

Waste & Litter:

As par t of our Waste & Litter subtheme, this year has seen remarkable involvement from the JIS community in reducing and repurposing our school’s waste Our collective effor ts led to the successful collection of 200 kg of aluminium cans, promoting responsible disposal and recycling habits

We gathered an impressive estimation of 3000 kg of paper waste throughout the academic school year. These numbers reflect the ongoing commitment from students, staff and families as well as suppor ting circular economy initiatives, as we are receiving toilet paper from En-Evo for use in our school’s toilet

Waste & Litter

Biodiversity & Nature:

A standout initiative under this sub theme is our Plastic Recycling Hub, which has creatively transformed plastic waste into useful items like rulers and coasters. Most notably, the hub produced eco-friendly medals that were proudly used in our school’s Fun Run event, demonstrating how waste can be given a new life through innovation and care

The Outdoor Discovery Centre (ODC) continues to thrive as a student-led space dedicated to hands-on, meaningful sustainability projects. This year, many of the initiatives focused on the subtheme of Biodiversity and Nature providing students with oppor tunities to connect with the environment and contribute to its protection

This year, our sustainability journey has been marked by creativity, collaboration, and care for the environment From the youngest learners to senior students, the JIS community has been actively involved in a variety of impactful projects

Highlights include the creation of vibrant flower beds at the Outdoor Discovery Centre (ODC), designed to attract essential pollinators like butterflies and stingless bees In a beautiful example of cross-year collaboration, senior and junior students worked together to build an additional flower bed at the Forest School, enriching the space with native flora

The Junior Gardening CCA embraced the principles of sustainable gardening by planting ginger, turmeric, and potatoes, while the Monday CCA explored natural alternatives to chemical fer tilizers by making fish fer tilizer using organic ingredients

Other notable effor ts:

● The Scout Cubs' construction of a bug hotel, promoting insect biodiversity

● Ongoing composting programmes led by the School Houses

● Osprey House’s Green Business project, which featured stingless bee honey in their eco-friendly product line

The ODC also played a central role in promoting STEAM education, hosting biodiversity gardens and composting workshops, and contributing to the success of Ear th Week activities Our students also proudly par ticipated in BioBlitz, using the iNaturalist app to record and celebrate Brunei’s native biodiversity.

Energy:

As par t of our commitment to the Energy sub-theme in our sustainability effor ts, we’ve been closely monitoring electricity usage across the school. The table below shows the monthly variance in electricity bills from BPC, comparing the 2024/2025 school year to the previous year (2023/2024)

We are pleased to repor t that, while some months saw a slight increase, the majority of months recorded a reduction in electricity usage, reflecting our growing awareness and effor ts to conserve energy

Significant energy savings were recorded in most other months, especially in:

○ March: a reduction of 18.77%

○ December: down by 14.45%

○ January: decreased by 12 10%

○ October: dropped by 11.74%

These reductions are the result of both the installation of solar panels and our ongoing energy-saving practices such as switching off lights and air-conditioning when not in use, making better use of natural light and ventilation and raising awareness about responsible energy use among staff and students.

This progress is a great reminder that small changes lead to big impact and our school community is truly making a gradual teaspoon of change in reducing our environmental footprint

Marine & Coast:

We have conducted an estimated eighteen recorded beach clean-ups throughout the year, carried out under various initiatives such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, A Teaspoon of Change Week, Junior School projects, and the Sustainability House Reps initiative.

Our most notable clean-up was in collaboration with Green Brunei, during which we successfully collected a total of 1,300 kg of waste from the Brunei River Our student documented this initiative and par ticipated in the CNN Call To Ear th 2024 as the theme Interconnected generations through clean up campaigns to protect our marine environment Video link HERE

In line with our Waste & Litter subtheme, several of these clean-ups also served an educational purpose Students learned about the different types of plastic that can be recycled at our Plastic Recycling Hub As par t of the activity, they were guided to identify, clean and collect suitable plastic materials, which were then processed through the recycling hub.
