idot is a typeface characterized by increased stroke contrast, condensed armature, hairline strokes, vertical stress, and flat, unbracketed serifs. It is a Neoclassical serif typeface. Firmin, along with Giambattista Bodoni, is credited with designing and establishing the “Modern,” “Neoclassical,” or “Didone” classification of typefaces. Didot is named after the famous French printing and type producing Didot family. The most famous Didot typefaces were developed in the period 1784–1811.

Firmin Didot (1764–1836) cut the letters, and cast them as type in Paris. It comes from a group of typefaces with the same name.

Firmin Didot – born 1764 in Paris, France, died 1836 in Mesnil-sur-l’Estrée, France – punch cutter, type founder, printer, publisher, author. Studied classical languages. 1783: cuts his first typefaces and reworks his father’s roman alphabets.

Didot comes from a group of typefaces with the same name. During the latter part of the 18th century into the early part of the 19th century, there was a famous French family named Didot.

Firmin Didot created most of the original Didot typefaces between 1784 and 1811 by cutting out the letters and developing the type.
