Application for Master's Degree in Interior, Architectural and Spatial Design

Four years studies both in the school and practice is a process of finding myself in architecture. I am interested in exploring the relationship between place and surroundings and how contemporary architecture can evolve, exist, and harmonize with historical contexts. Bsed on the architecture’s social dimension, as well as its capacity for artistic and cultural expression, I recognise the collective process by which buildings and cities are made as part of an ongoing economic, social and cultural continuum. I approach projects by a strong concern for the direct emotional effect that architecture can have through its physical and pictorial presence, material association and constructional directness. I eagerly seek insipire, challenges, and growth in the journey...

01. A New Urban Road Created

Type: Academic Study (Individual) Year: 2022

Site Location: Hiroshima, Japan

Tutor: Leonora Aigbokhae

Programe: Cultural Market

Hiroshima was rebuilt rapidly after the atomic bombing, fueled by the determination of its residents. However, contemporary Japanese society can often feel oppressive, especially for young people.

A cultural market is proposed to revive the local society through a series of traditional crafts selling and workshops. It encourages people to know and participates in the production.

A landmark alongside the market is Arcade in the north. Thus, a new perpendicular urban route was created from the peace memorial park passing by the Arcade until to the market.

Threshold : A Welcoming Gesture

There are many school buildings around the site which showed an extremely closed gesture by these spatial languages and gave a depressed sense for people who used the spaces.

The threshold of the market is compeletly open for public. People from Arcade are attracted by the canopy and the cafe aside from the canopy that both showed welcoming and celebrating gestures to creat lively atmosphere. At the same time, windows under the eave provide light to the interior spaces and ventilation. It potentially reaveal and symbol of the theme for the market and attract people further explore the market due to the inspiring timber mortise and tenon truss structure.

The Craftmen's Drama

Hiroshima is known for its traditional artistry and craftsmanship, to be found in items like washi paper, sake, ceramics, and art brushes. Unfortunately, these traditions are disappearing following social iterations. The production of making crafts are seem like a performance. Letting craftsmen go back to the 'stage' is important. At the same time, it is a useful way to create a lively public atmosphere in the market and attract people to know and participate in the series of activities. In the central, a shooting lightfrom the sky going through the traditional timber mortise and tenon truss to the workshops further celebrates these crafts productions.

The lightweight timber frame structure are designed into the market which is environmental-friendly and adapt to the traditional culture market in Japanese context. The timber truss formed by traditonal Japanese tennon structure which give the support for the roof structure and give the unique interior expericence for people who have been to the culture market. At the same time, the earthquake proofing foundation is constructed on the top of flexible pads that isolate the foundation from the gound.

A Journey through the time: Preserving & Decaying

Type: Academic Study (Individual)

Year: 2023

Site Location: Liverpool, UK

Tutor: Gareth Puttock

Liverpool has a rich history of docks and played a significant role in the global slave trade in the 19th century. However, in the late 20th century, the city’s docks and manufacturing industries declined sharply, leading to high unemployment and a shift in its identity.

The proposed museum aims to preserve Liverpool's memory by encouraging engagement with its history through contemporary artworks by Martin Parr and Lubaina Himid. Additionally, public spaces like the library and art studio will inspire future artists and expand the local art scene.

02.

From the Rooms to the City

The museum is a threshold for the city located between St.George's Quater and Waterfront Quater where is the route people who arrived the city have to pass by. Memory is considered inseparable from time and scenes. Tourists from a series of rooms in the museum where help them to understand more about the city then further explore the city. Three civic ourdoor activity spaces are connected in the urban perspective. The rooms and landscape create a cohesive sequences from intimate spaces and extends outward to shape the urban experience.

A storytelling from the city: Past

The decaying brick wall of the existing pub building are preserved which symbolize the history of the decline industrial city. Going further, people start to know the history of Liverpool as the key dock city dominated slave trade around the world. The deep shadow courtyard would have a strong contrast with the bright garden at right which encouraged people have relfection about the history of the city.It inspired by aesthetics of decay by Dylan Trigg.

Encounter the Brightness

The futurists cinema facade is preserved well to clad on the wall of the deep shadow courtyard. The bright interiors and dark deep shadow courtyard make people recall the glory period but it still exists in different way. Then people go up to the library and a roof top to stay people enjoy and admire the surrounding heritages. The garden symbolizes brightness and light. There is a spill out space at the back of the the site to connect the community. A sidewalk activated to weave the museum and the Western Approaches museum where ignored by most of people.

03. A place where everyday life can be staged

Type: Personal Project

Year: 2024

Site Location: Sheffield, UK

Programe: Theater + Atelier

The City

Sheffield played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution, with many significant inventions and technologies having developed in the city. London Road eads south from the city. The cultural diverse neibourhood where communites gathered and surrounded by a variety of pubs, shops, and takeaway resturants. A library and an abandoned cinema have now been mostly demolished as part of the redevelopment works. Thus, a civic and community landmark is proposed to strengthen the diversity character and serves as a hub for the local community to gather, learn, and engage.

Unveiled A Place of Gathering

The Square, as a place of meeting, passage and waiting, is metaphorically linked to the idea of Theatre. People are actors and spectators at the same time, one observes and is observed. It is a place where everyday life can be staged.

On the other side of the atelier, garden provides a piece of the quiet space where people enjoy in the nature.

A Destination for citizens

The theater stands as a quiet beacon at the corner, its form exuding a civic character through its public spaces, while the interiors embrace a more domestic atmosphere. Moments like these invite the public to engage with the theater in a mindful way. The foyer is designed as a colonnade with a domed ceiling at the center, emphasizing arrival and the gathering experience. The auditorium is highly flexible, creating a sense of indeterminacy, while the timber finishes throughout add warmth and intimacy to the space.

Bracknell Road, Meadowbrook

Warfield, Berkshire, UK (Residential) 6m

Professional Practice Works - Stage 0-3

The site is located on Bracknell Road on the grounds of a former school and has many good quality oak and elm trees, which create restrictions but also a beautiful setting. The project brief is to develop the site and the existing building to create a complex of large family homes. The site naturally splits into two sections – a narrow tree-filled area to the north and a large open area to the south that is surrounded by trees.

My role for the project is mainly from Stage 0 of the RIBA workstage. I took part in site visits and drew lots of complex survey drawings after measuring on site. Under the direction of the director, I helped to produce drawings to present to developer in the meeting then prepare the planning application document. During the process, I made significant contribution by using my advantages on modeling and rendering.

Spyhill

Spyhill, Aberdeenshire, UK (Residential) Professional Practice Works - Stage 2-3

Spyhill steading is located in the rural area of Aberdeenshire. Near the site, there are several similar farmsteads located, that vary in size and function. A second type of building typologies in the area, are the free-standing cottages.

The proposed development of Spyhill seeks to part demolish, retain and refurbish the existing historic barn structures, to create two new homes and build a new third home on the vacant land to the west. Both hail from Aberdeen and have been working and living in London.

I began working on the project after a decision from client’s comments. Supervised by the the director, I prepared ‘Design and Access Statement’by producing the high quality renders after preparing a series of 2D drawings with complexed updates and models.
