Work History

Graduate sustainability consultant (Full-time, Remote)

AES Sustainability Consultants Ltd, Devon, UK

Apr 2022—Present · 3yrs

Skillset(Operational Energy and Carbon Team for Existing buildings):

·Part L SBEM Calculations: Undertake detailed modelling using IESVE and provide technical advice to ensure compliance and documented through provision of an EPC.

·MEES Compliance: Provide with site surveys and EPC certification, and recommendations on improving performance to comply with the criteria set by Minimum Energy Efficiency standards.

·Net Zero Strategies: Model potential improvement measures and recommend energy retrofits and Low&Zero carbon technologies, aiming for Net Zero target with thorough report writing.

Key Projects:

· Norfolk County Council Decarbonisation reports

- Assisted in site surveys and performed SBEM calculations for a wide variety (144 buildings) of non-domestic buildings including fire stations, libraries, clinics, museums, offices, care homes, community hubs and workshops. Developed potential measures to reduce carbo n emissions through energy hierarchy (building fabric, services, renewables), and provide retrofit improvement reports.

· Northwest Leicestershire District Council MEES reports

- Updated EPCs and developed potential improvement measures of building fabric and HVAC systems for more than 60 non-domestic properties to achieve minimum energy standard (MEES).

· Wellington School EPC , Tauton

- Performed energy modelling based on on-site survey notes and generated EPCs for a mix of residential and commercial buildings for a funding bid, also providing recommendations for potential improvement measures in energy efficiency. Skillset(Overheating Team for New construction domestic buildings):

· Part O (England 2021/Wales 2022) & Section 3 (Scotland 2022) Compliance: Demonstrate compliance using simplified and dynamic methods. Prepare checklists for building control submissions.

· CIBSE TM52&TM59 Analysis: Develop dynamic thermal models in IES VE (ModelIT, Apache, Macroflo) to evaluate overheating risks in domestic and non-domestic buildings. Analyse simulation results in VistaPro, assessing internal temperature conditions against CIBSE TM52 & TM59 criteria.

· Overheating Assessment & Mitigation: Identified high-risk areas by assessing occupied spaces against CIBSE thresholds. Model potential mitigation measures to reduce overheating risks and ensure compliance.

Relevant Experience:

- Conducted overheating analyses using CIBSE DSY design weather data for over 100 house types and flats (predominantly naturally ventilated) across multiple UK sites, including locations with noise and air pollution constraints. Collaborated with SAP assessors to ensure compliance with Part O and Part L for major residential developers, including Vistry Group, Taylor Wimpey, and Bellway Homes

- Developed potential mitigation measures, such as mechanical ventilation, reduced solar gains (lower g-value), external shading devices, and improved thermal mass to reduce summer overheating risks and achieve compliance.

- Compiled detailed reports and checklists (simplified and dynamic) outlining overheating risk analyses and mitigation strategies, providing documentation for building control approvals.

Building Physics Engineer (Full-time, Hybrid)

Active building Centre, Swansea, UK

Dec 2021— Feb 2022 · 3mos

·Energy Modelling Demand (IESVE) and Generation (PV Sol): Developed dynamic thermal baseline models for new builds using IESVE to calculate energy demand with inputs taken from Building regulation Approved Documents and CIBSE GuideA. Simulated accurate energy generation using PV sol to assess feasibility of meeting demand and provided strategic recommendations for architects on the early design stage.

·Data Analysis: Undertook data sorting and analysis of carbon emissions from London boroughs and UK domestic EPCs using Excel, aimed at identifying market demands of energy optimisation and decarbonisation.

·Marketing Materials: Created booklets on active homes that highlighted benefits such as zero energy bills, specifically designed for developers to appeal to prospective buyers and promote sustainable living.

Architectural Assistant & Sustainability Consultant (MSc Live project, Sheffield, UK)

South Yorkshire Housing Association, Sheffield, UK

Jan 2021— May 2021 · 5mos

Retrofitted a 727m² care home at RIBA stages 0-4, comprising two three-storey buildings, with a focus on energy efficiency, net-zero carbon emissions, and occupant well-being. Applied holistic sustainable design strategies to enhance building performance and improve living conditions for the Beaufort community.

· Approach to Sustainable Architecture

- Achieved BREEAM Outstanding(estimation) with an estimated 85% score by implementing customised retrofit strategies while maintaining a £4,000,000 budget as per client expectations.

- Improved energy efficiency by 64%, achieving Passivhaus standards through fabric retrofits.

- Achieved net-zero carbon emissions by introducing suitable on-site renewable energy sources, including photovoltaic panels and ground source heat pumps, based on a comprehensive analysis of building structure and site conditions.

- Reduced embodied carbon by 50% through the use of low-impact materials and calculated with OpenLCA

- Realised 95% natural lighting through facade retrofits featuring integrated shading designs, combining shading functionality with aesthetic appeal.

- Mitigated overheating risks with passive cooling strategies such as double-skin facades and mixed-mode ventilation.

· BIM Workflow

Developed Revit-based models and collaborated with various plug-ins and software tools such as Designbuilder and IESVE, to simulate building performance, covering energy consumption, carbon emissions, thermal comfort, CFD, daylighting, material costs and spatial analysis. This comprehensive approach allowed for iterative design adjustments and validation, leading to a robust retrofit strategy.
