Hello!

My name is Jin Jang, and I'm a graduating transportation planning student in the urban planning program at the University of Illinois at Chicago With a background in computer science and anthropology, I have developed a unique perspective that allows me to approach planning challenges from a data-driven and analytical standpoint, while also recognizing the importance of understanding the lived experiences of communities

In my portfolio, you'll find examples of projects I've worked on that showcase my ability to utilize various software and programming languages to extract meaningful insights from data, as well as my proficiency in conducting literature reviews, synthesizing different viewpoints, and other qualitative research methods. I'm eager to demonstrate my commitment to creating more sustainable and equitable urban environments by using a holistic approach to planning.

Thank you for taking the time to review my portfolio, and I look forward to discussing potential opportunities to collaborate and make a positive impact in the field of urban and transportation planning.

Sincerely,

Jin Jang

Illinois Medical District Plan

Project Information

Course: Planning Studio

Semester: Spring 2023

Product: Paper, Presentation

Our goal as a studio of 18 members was to create a plan for the Illinois Medical District. As part of a large team, it was not possible to be a contributor to each and every aspect of our plan.

However, where I did leave my mark was in data collection and analysis. The following is a hot-spot map of where Illinois Medical District workers live - or more importantly for our plan, where they do not live.

Map was created through ArcGIS.

Complete Streets Corridor Plan

Project Information

Course: Complete Streets

Semester: Fall 2022

Product: Paper, Presentation

This project involved the redesign of the Grand and Hubbard corridor in Chicago using complete streets principles to create a safer, more welcoming environment for all users.

Top two images show a cross-section of the existing and proposed conditions for Grand Avenue, respectively. The bottom image is an idea for the corridor from the brainstorming process, although this idea was later scrapped.

All images created in Illustrator.

Tree Canopy Coverage

Project Information

Course: GIS I

Semester: Fall 2021

Product: Presentation

Our group wanted to know which Chicago community areas had the highest percentage of tree canopy coverage per land area. Further steps in this project involved a comparison between tree canopy coverage and income, as well as an expanded map containing all of Cook County.

Map was created through ArcGIS and Illustrator.

Regional Rail Proposal

Project Information

Course: Transportation I

Semester: Spring 2022

Product: Paper

As part of a paper advocating for a Paris RER or Berlin S-Bahn style regional system, I created maps showing what that could look like in Chicago.

Townhomes Poster

Project Information

Course: Visualization II

Semester: Spring 2023

Product: Poster

This assignment involved the planning and visualization of a plot of townhomes. Initial sketches were converted to 3D CAD models, and a poster was created to show off different viewpoints.

This poster used Sketchup to model the 3D environment and Illustrator to create the final product.

3D Visualization of Rail Access

Project Information

Course: GIS II

Semester: Fall 2022

Product: ArcGIS StoryMap

We visualized the gaps between transit demand and transit access. The following map represents the population (demand) as the height of the bar, whereas the color shows the average walk time to train stations (access).

The StoryMap (QR Code) has additional maps using other indicators of demand, and it details the methodology and process of analysis.

This project used the 3D capabilities of ArcGIS, and the following map was created using Illustrator.
