Company Profile

Whilst cherishing our heritage, we acknowledge that we are not merely custodians of the past, but stewards of a living legacy. Through our OEM services, we merge tradition with innovation, crafting fabrics that empower brands to tell their own stories.

Our Story

The revival of the Thai silk industry by a legendary American.

Born in 1906 in Delaware and educated at Princeton University, James H.W. Thompson was an architect by trade, and after serving as a military officer in World War II, he settled in Bangkok.

He was captivated by Asia, especially for its culture and local crafts. He particularly fell in love with the art of hand-woven Thai silk, with its unique luster and texture. His entrepreneurial skills and design background led to him building a network of artisans, re-engineered looms, introducing new designs and techniques, and most importantly new colors to showcase to the world. Hence, in 1951 he founded the Thai Silk Company and commenced the brand’s international expansion and recognition.

On Easter Sunday afternoon in 1967, only 9 days after opening his new Surawong Road showroom, Jim Thompson disappeared mysteriously while on holiday in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. His disappearance remains the largest mystery in Asia to this day.

Our Company

The Thai Silk Company continues to be inspired by its founder’s values. Today, the Jim Thompson brand includes the manufacturing of fabrics for residential and commercial projects, as well as fashion retail, and F&B, and is recognized worldwide by discerning customers, particularly those in search of authenticity, originality, and refinement, and who share our aesthetic sensibility. Now, Jim Thompson is Thailand’s most visible iconic, global lifestyle brand.

With our unique heritage, extensive presence in Thailand, the originality and authenticity of our brand identity, the creativity of our designers, the quality and mix of our products and services, as well as our ambition to develop overseas, today, Jim Thompson is an iconic Thai lifestyle brand with a global reputation for beautiful silks, and beyond.

Jim Thompson is still privately owned by majority Thai shareholders and currently employs over 1,200 staff internationally.

Our Factory

Three hours Northeast of Bangkok, in the Isan conservation area of Korat lies our Jim Thompson factory & farm. Originally a mulberry plantation, the farm covers an area of 119 hectares, with its own reservoir to allow for totally organic farming and an abundance of wildlife. An area known for traditional silk making, this farm champions Jim Thompson’s values of nurturing a craft industry while benefiting thousands of families in the process.

Opened in 1989 to supply the growing demand for Jim Thompson products, our fully integrated mill prepares our yarns, dyes them ready for hand or machine weaving, as well as printing and finishing.

The factory not only produces textiles for residential and commercial projects but also produces fabrics for our fashion and home ranges, with unwavering commitment to excellence and exceptional design.
