Explanation:Thefirstnumberafterthe modeldesignationrepresentsthetotalnumberofwheels(hubs)pervehicle.The secondnumberrepresentsthenumberof wheels(hubs)thatdrivethevehicle.Each modeldesignationalsocarriesasuffix, whichidentifiesthecabtype.

Thismanual,togetherwithmanualsfor specificcomponents,forexample,Volvo engine,Cumminsengine,Eatontransmission,etc.,containimportantinformationto beabletooperatethisvehiclesafely.They containadviceandinstructionswhichwill enableyoutogettheoperatingeconomy andperformancethatyouexpectfromthis qualityvehicle.

Allinformation,illustrationsandspecificationscontainedinthismanualarebased uponthelatestproductinformationavailableatthetimeofpublication.Ifany questionsariseconcerningthecurrentstatusofFederalorstatelaws,theappropriate Federalorstateagencyshouldbecontacted.

GeneralSafetyInformation

OperatingtheVehicle

Everyvehicle,includingheavydutyvehicles,hasblindspots.Thesizeofblind spotsvariesfromdrivertodriverandfrom situationtosituation.Asaskilled,professionaldriver, you areinthebestpositionto avoidaccidentsinturns,lanechangesor othermaneuvers.VolvoTrucksNorth America,Inc.providesstandardequipment (suchascabs,windshields,windowsizes andmirrors),preferredbymostownersand driversundermostconditionsandinmost applications.

However,duetodifferencesinthesizeof drivers,theirseatingpositions,thewaythat theyuseandoperatetheirvehicles,personalpreferencesandotherfactors,no combinationofmirrorsandothervisibility enhancementdeviceswilleliminateall blindspotsineverysituation.

Thesafeoperationofthisvehicleisupto you.Becauseofyourspecialpreferences, needsandcircumstances,youmaywantto addextramirrorsand/orothervisibilityenhancementdevices.Ifso,youshould contactanauthorizedVolvoTruckdealerto obtainthosepartswhichbestfityourown personalneedsandpreferences.

WARNING

Allitemswithinthecabmustbesecured beforethevehicleissetinmotion.This includes,butisnotlimitedto,drinks, clothes,books,televisions,etc.Inthe eventofacollision,looseitemscould flyaroundinsidethecab.Thiscould causepersonalinjury.

Nevertrytooperateorworkonthis vehiclewhileundertheinfluenceofalcohol.Yourreflexescanbeaffectedby evenasmallamountofalcohol.Drinkingandoperatingthisvehiclecanlead toanaccident,causingseriouspersonal injuryordeath.

OperatingInBobtailMode

Tractorsareequippedwithabobtailair brakeproportioningvalvewhichautomaticallyredistributesthebrakingforcebetween frontandrearaxleswhennothookedupto asemitrailer(bobtailoperation).

Whenoperatinginbobtailmode,therear brakechambersreceivereducedorproportionalbrakeairpressure.Whenthetractor istowingatrailer,therearbrakechambers willreceivefull(normal)brakepressure.

NOTE! Whenoperatingbobtail,becertain thatgladhands,trailerairhoses,electrical cableandconnectorsareproperlystowed andsecure.Donotallowthemtorubor chafeonothercomponents.

WARNING

Whenoperatingbobtail,thebrake systemonthevehiclereducesthepossibilityofrearwheelbrakelockup,except onfullpedalapplication.Whenbobtailing,becertainthatadequatepedal pressureisapplied.Thereisnoneedto reducepedaleffort.Failuretodosomay resultinincreasedstoppingdistances.

DoNotOverload

Thisvehiclehasbeendesignedandassembledforamaximumgrossvehicleweight rating(GVWR)andamaximumfrontand rearaxleweightsrating(FAWRand RAWR).Theactualratingforthisvehicle canbefoundonthelabelattachedtothe doorframeonthedriver’sside.Ifanyof thesethreeratingsisexceededandoverloadingoccurs,instability,poorhandling, failureofpartsandacceleratedwearcan occur.

UndernocircumstancesshouldthepublishedGVWR,FAWR,and/orRAWRbe exceeded.Failuretoobservetheseprecautionscanleadtothelossofvehicle control,resultinginacrashcausingseriouspersonalinjuryordeath.

Donotexceedtheloadratingofthe tiresorthevehicleweightratings.Overloadingmayresultintirefailurecausing lossofvehiclecontrol,leadingtoanaccidentresultinginseverepersonalinjury ordeath.

Operating

Beforedrivingthisvehicle,locatetheinstrumentsandcontrols,andbecome thoroughlyfamiliarwiththeiroperation. Afterstartingandwhendriving,always checktomakesurethattheinstrument readingsarenormal.

ChassisFrame

Framesiderailsareheattreated. Nowelding ispermittedbecausestructuralfailure mayresult.Donotdrillthrougheithertop orbottomflanges.Awarninglabelisalso attachedtotheframeforinformation.

Drillingispermittedintheframewebin accordancewithaspecifiedholespacing pattern.ConsultaVolvoTruckdealerto obtainapprovedholespacingdimensionsor refertotheFrameRailandCrossMember ServiceManual.

Framerailandcrossmembernutsandbolts shouldbecheckedperiodicallyandtightenedtothespecifiedtorqueifnecessary.

WARNING

Donotweldonanypartoftheframeor drillholesinthetoporbottomflanges. Seriousstructuraldamagecouldoccur.

FrameAlterations

Undernocircumstancescantheframebe cutandanextensionpieceaddedtoincreasethewheelbase.Theonlyalteration allowediswheelbaseshortening,where theonlychangeintheframerailisanew holepatterndrilledforthenewlocationof therearsuspension.

WeldingInVehicle

Donotweldanywhereinoronthevehicle beforedisconnectingbatteries,allelectronic controlunits(ECU)andinstrumentcluster. Seepage298formoreinformation.Donot useoxy/acetyleneweldingtorepaircab panels.Refertotheservicemanualsfor specificinformation.

ExhaustandNoiseEmissions

General USA

TheFederalCleanAirAct,Section203(a) (3),statesthefollowingconcerningtheremovalofairpollutioncontroldevicesor modificationofacertifiedenginetoanoncertifiedconfiguration:

“Thefollowingactsandthecausingthereof areprohibited:

(3)Foranypersontoremoveorrenderinoperativeanydeviceorelementofdesign installedonorinamotorvehicleormotor vehicleengineincompliancewithregulationsunderthispartpriortoitssaleand deliverytotheultimatepurchaser,orfor anymanufacturerordealerknowinglyto removeorrenderinoperativeanysuchdesignaftersaleanddeliverytotheultimate purchaser.”

Specifically,pleasenotethatnopersonmay makesuchchangespriortothesaleand

deliveryofthevehicletotheultimatepurchaser,and,inaddition,nomanufactureror dealermaymaketakesuchactionaftersale anddeliveryofthevehicletotheultimate purchaser.Thelawprovidesapenaltyofup to$10,000foreachviolation.

Modifications,suchasreprogrammingof thefuelsystemsotheenginewillexceed thecertifiedhorsepowerortorque,orremovingthemufflersareexamplesofillegal changes.

Changesshouldnotbemadetoacertified enginethatwouldresultinanenginethat doesnotmatchtheconfigurationofanenginemodelthatiscurrentlycertifiedto meetFederalStandards.

Canada

ThesameconditionsthatapplyintheUSA applytoCanada,withoneexception.After thevehicleissoldtoaretailcustomer,that is,theenduser,thejurisdictioncontrolling theemissioncontroldevicesbecomesthe provinceinwhichthevehicleislicensed. Nochangesshouldbemadethatrenderany orallofthedevicesinoperative.

Shouldtheowner/operatorwishtomake anychangestotheemissioncontroldevices,checkwiththeprovincialauthority beforemakinganysuchchanges.

Mexico

ThesameconditionsthatapplyintheUSA applytoMexico.RefertotheMexican FederalLawforEmissionControlwhich adherestoEPAregulations.Nochanges shouldbemadethatrenderanyorallof theemissionscontroldevicesinoperative.

Shouldtheowner/operatorwishtomake anychangestotheemissioncontroldevices,checkwiththestateauthoritybefore makinganysuchchanges.

CaliforniaEmissionControlWarrantyStatement

YOURWARRANTYRIGHTSANDOBLIGATIONS

TheCaliforniaAirResourcesBoardandVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.(VTNA)are pleasedtoexplaintheemissioncontrolsystemwarrantyonyourvehicle.InCalifornia, newmotorvehiclesmustbedesigned,builtandequippedtomeettheState’sstringent anti-smogstandards.VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.mustwarranttheemissioncontrol systemonyourvehiclefortheperiodsoftimelistedbelowprovidedtherehasbeenno abuse,neglectorimpropermaintenanceofyourvehicle.

Youremissioncontrolsystemmayincludepartssuchascarburetororfuelinjectionsystem andenginecomputer.Alsoincludedmaybehoses,belts,connectorsandotheremissionrelatedassemblies.

Whereawarrantableconditionexists,VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.willrepairyour vehicleatnocosttoyouincludingdiagnosis,partsandlabor.

MANUFACTURER’SWARRANTYCOVERAGE

Thiswarrantyisappliccableforaperiodoffiveyears,100,000milesor3,000hoursof operation,whicheverfirstoccurs.Ifanemission-relatedpartofyourvehicleisdefective, thepartwillberepairedorreplacedbyVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.

ThisisyouremissioncontrolsystemDEFECTSWARRANTY.

OWNER’SWARRANTYRESPONSIBILITIES

Asthevehicleowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceoftherequiredmaintenance listedinyourowner’smanual.VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.recommendsthatyouretainallreceiptscoveringmaintenanceonyourtruckbutVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc. cannotdenywarrantysolelyforthelackofreceiptsorforyourfailuretoensuretheperformanceofallscheduledmaintenance.

YouareresponsibleforpresentingyourvehicletoaVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc. dealerassoonasaproblemexists.Thewarrantyrepairsshouldbecompletedinareasonableamountoftime,nottoexceed30days.

Asthevehicleowner,youshouldalsobeawarethatVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc. maydenyyouwarrantycoverageifyourvehicleoraparthasfailedduetoabuse,neglect, impropermaintenanceorunapprovedmodifications.

EMISSIONCONTROLSYSTEMWARRANTY

VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.WARRANTSTOTHEORIGINALOWNER,AND EACHSUBSEQUENTOWNER,OFANEWTRUCKPOWEREDBYAVOLVO DIESELENGINETHATTHEEMISSIONCONTROLSYSTEMOFYOURTRUCK:

1Isdesigned,builtandequippedsoastoconformatthetimeofsaletoallregulations oftheU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgencyandtheCaliforniaAirResourcesBoard applicableatthetimeofthemanufacture;and

2Isfreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipwhichwillcausetheemissioncontrolcomponentsnottofunctionasdesignedforaperiodofuseof5yearsor100,000 milesor3,000hoursofengineoperation,whichevercomesfirst.

The5years/100,000miles/3,000hourwarrantyperiodshallbeginonthedatethevehicle isfirstdeliveredtothefirstretailpurchaserorifthevehicleisplacedinserviceasa demonstratorcompanyvehiclepriortothesaleatretail,onthedatethevehicleisthefirst placedinservice.

TheemissioncontrolsystemofyournewVolvoenginewasdesigned,builtandtestedusinggenuineVolvoparts,andtheengineiscertifiedasbeinginconformitywithFederal andCaliforniaemissioncontrolregulations.Accordingly,itisrecommendedthatanyreplacementpartsusedformaintenance,replacementorrepairwithoutinvalidatingthis warranty;thecostofsuchservicesororparts,however,willnotbecoveredunderthewarrantyexceptinanemergencysituation.Apartnotbeingavailableorarepairnotbeing completedwithin30daysalsoconstitutesanemergency.

Useofreplacementpartswhicharenotofequivalentqualitymayimpairtheeffectiveness ofemissioncontrolsystems.IfotherthanVolvopartsareusedformaintenance,owner shouldobtainassurancesthatsuckpartsarewarrantedbytheirmanufacturertobeequivalenttogenuineVolvoparts.However,theuseofotherthanVolvoreplacementpartsdoes notinvalidatethewarrantyonothercomponents,unlesssuchpartscausedamagetowarrantedparts.

RepairsandservicecoveredbythewarrantywillbeperformedbyanauthorizedVolvo TrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.dealerathisplaceofbusinesswithnochargeforpartsorlabor(includingdiagnosis)usingVolvopartsfortheemissioncontrolsystem,thatrequires replacementandiscoveredbythewarrantyandfounddefective.Incaseofanemergency, whereanauthorizedVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.dealerisnotavailable,repairsmay beperformedatanyavailableserviceestablishmentorbytheowner,usinganyequivalent replacementpartsandVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.willreimbursetheownerforsuch repairs(includingdiagnosis)nottoexceedVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc’ssuggested retailretailpriceforthewarrantedpartsandthelaborrateappropriateforthegeographical areaandthetasksperformed.

ReplacedpartsandpaidinvoicesmustbepresentedtoaVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc. dealerforreimbursement.

TheemissionscontrolpartscoveredbythisEmissionControlSystemWarrantyarelisted under"WhatIsCoveredbytheEmissionsWarranty."YouareresponsiblefortheperformanceofallrequiredmaintenanceonyournewVolvoengine,includingmaintenanceor repairsneededduetosevereoperatingconditions.VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.will notdenyawarrantyclaimsolelybecauseyouhavenorecordofmaintenance.However, VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.maydenyawarrantyclaimifyourfailuretoperform requiredmaintenanceresultedinthefailureofawarrantedpart.Receiptscoveringthe performanceofregularmaintenanceshouldberetainedintheeventquestionsariseconcerningmaintenance.Thereceiptsshouldbetransferredtoeachsubsequentownerofthe vehiclewiththeemissionwarrantedengine.

VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.wishestohelptoassurethattheEmissionControlSystemWarrantyisproperlyadministered.Intheeventthatyoudonotreceivethewarranty servicetowhichyoubelieveyouareentitledundertheEmissionControlSystemWarranty, youshouldcontactVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.WarrantyAdministration,(336)3932000.TheaddressandtelephonenumberofeachRegionalOfficeisinyourvehicle owner’smanual.IfyouneedadditionalassistanceorinformationconcerningtheEmission ControlSystemWarranty,contact:VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.,WarrantyAdministration,(336)393-2000.

WHATISNOTCOVEREDBYTHEEMISSIONWARRANTY

Thiswarrantydoesnotcover:

1Malfunctionsinanypartcausedbyanyofthefollowing:misuse,abuse,improper adjustmentsunlessperformedbyaVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.dealer,modifications,alterations,tampering,disconnection,improperorinadequatemaintenance,or useoffuelsnotrecommendedfortheengineasdescribedintheowner’smanual.

2Damageresultingfromaccident,actsofnatureorothereventsbeyondthecontrolof VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.

3Thereplacementofexpendablemaintenanceitemssuchasfilters,hoses,belts,oil, thermostatandcoolantmadeinconnectionwithscheduledmaintenanceservicesonce thesepartshavebeenreplaced.Anypartsreplacedunderwarrantybeforethefirstrequiredreplacementpointarewarrantedfortheremainderofthewarrantyperiod.

4ReplacementitemswhicharenotgenuineVolvopartsornotauthorizedbyVolvo TrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.

5Lossoftime,inconvenience,lossofuseofvehicleorengine,orcommercialloss.

6Anyvehicleonwhichtheodometerorhourmeterhasbeendisconnectedorthe mileage(orhours)hasbeenalteredsotheactualusagecannotbereadilybedetermined.

7AnyvehicleregisteredandnormallyoperatedoutsidetheUnitedStates.

WHATISCOVEREDBYTHEEMISSIONWARRANTY

ThefollowingisalistoftheitemsthatareconsideredapartoftheEmissionControlSystemsandarecoveredbytheEmissionWarrantywheninstalledasoriginalequipmentby VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.onvehicleswhichwerebuilttoconformtoEnvironmentalProtectionAgencyandCaliforniaAirResourcesBoardregulations

VolvoTrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.warrants tothefirstpersonwhopurchasesthisvehicleforpurposesotherthanresaleandto eachsubsequentpurchaser,thatthisvehicle asmanufacturedbyVolvoTrucksNorth America,Inc.wasdesigned,builtand equippedtoconform,atthetimeitleftthe controlofVolvoTrucksNorthAmerica, Inc.,withallapplicableU.S.EPANoise ControlRegulations.

Thiswarrantycoversthisvehicleasdesigned,builtandequippedbyVolvoTrucks NorthAmerica,Inc.,andisnotlimitedto anyparticularpart,componentorsystemof thevehiclemanufacturedbyVolvoTrucks NorthAmerica,Inc.Defectsindesign,assemblyorinanypart,componentorsystem ofthevehicleasmanufacturedbyVolvo TrucksNorthAmerica,Inc.,which,atthe timeitleftthecontrolofVolvoTrucks NorthAmerica,Inc.causednoiseemissions toexceedFederalstandards,arecoveredby thiswarrantyforthelifeofthevehicle.

TamperingwithNoiseControlSystem

Federallawprohibitsthefollowingactsor thecausingthereof:

(1)Theremovalorrenderinginoperativeby anyperson,otherthanforpurposesof maintenance,repair,orreplacement,ofany deviceorelementofdesignincorporated intoanynewvehicleforthepurposeof noisecontrolpriortoitssaleordeliveryto theultimatepurchaserorwhileitisinuse; or

(2)theuseofthevehicleaftersuchdevice orelementofdesignhasbeenremovedor renderedinoperativebyanyperson.

Amongthoseactspresumedtoconstitute tamperingaretheactslistedbelow:

Removingorrenderinginoperativetheair cleanerorintakepiping.

EngineCoolingFan

Removingorrenderinginoperativethefan clutch.

Removingthefanshroud.

Engine

Removingoralteringenginespeedprogrammingsoastoallowenginespeedto exceedmanufacturer’sspecifications.

ModifyingtheparametersoftheEngine ElectronicControlUnit.
