In 2016-17, Todd Eastin begins his seventh year as the Director of Athletics and Fitness at South Mountain Community College. In the last six years, seven of SMCC’s nine Athletic teams have qualified for post-season play. During this time period, SMCC has won regional championships in Men’s Basketball (2010-11, 2015-16), Softball (2011), Men’s Golf (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016), and Baseball (2014). Since the 2010-11 academic year, four of the athletic programs have qualified for NJCAA National Tournaments, with the Men’s Golf program winning four National Championships (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016). In each of the last six years, the student-athlete cumulative GPA at SMCC has equaled or exceeded 3.20, while achieving a 33-year high at SMCC in 2012-13 with 3.35. As an Athletic Department, the Cougars’ annual fundraising for 2011 to 2016 averaged $100,000, but this total was topped in 2014 with $130,040.

Todd Eastin is in his 14th season as the Head Baseball Coach at South Mountain Community College. He has compiled a 478-291 record in his 13 years leading the Cougars. Eastin has been named the ABCA Region 1 Coach of the Year (2005 and 2014) and the NJCAA Western District Coach of the Year (2005). In 13 years at the helm of the Baseball program, the team has been honored as an NJCAA All-Academic Team in 12 of those seasons, posting a cumulative GPA well over 3.0 in each academic year.

Eastin was the pitching coach at SMCC from 1999 to 2003. During his 18 years at South Mountain, he has coached 57 professionally drafted players (49 in last 13 years) and 144 of his players (131 in last 13 years) have received scholarships to four-year colleges and universities.

In 11 of his 13 seasons, Coach Eastin’s teams have been nationally ranked by the NJCAA. The Cougars’ highest national ranking was a fourth place finish in the 2005 JUCO World Series. In his first year at the helm, the Cougars finished with a 26-win improvement (37) over the previous season (11). A new school record for wins was set in 2005, with 48 wins eclipsing the previous mark of 43. In 11 years, Coach Eastin’s teams have averaged 37 wins per season, including two Region 1 Division 1 championships, two District Tournament appearances, and one NJCAA National Championship appearance.

Todd Eastin was born and raised in southern California, attending Walnut High School in Walnut, CA. He moved to Phoenix after graduating high school and became an All-Conference and All-Region catcher at South Mountain Community College in 1994 and 1995. Eastin was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 1994 draft. He then went on to play at Div. 1 McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. He graduated from McNeese with a B.S. in Criminal Justice and Sociology.

He returned to Phoenix in 1997, and in the fall of 1998 began serving as an assistant coach at SMCC, under head coach George Lopez. In 2002, Eastin completed an MBA degree from Arizona State University, and in June 2003, Eastin became the head baseball coach at SMCC.

GILLUM Assistant Coach | 6th Season

Tyler Gillum enters his sixth year on the baseball staff at South Mountain Community College. Gillum serves as the infield and 3rd base coach, as well as assisting with hitters, strength training, and recruiting. Coach Gillum is also the Health & Wellness Faculty at SMCC. In his five seasons at SMCC, the Cougars compiled a team batting average of .306 while having 14 position players earn All-Conference honors, sent 33 players to Division 1 institutions, 5 players drafted and posted an overall record of 172-112. In the summers of 2012 and 2013, Coach Gillum traveled to the Myrtle Beach Summer Collegiate Baseball League to manage the Shore Eagles. For the past three summers (’14 - ’16), Coach Gillum has served as an assistant coach for the Brazos Valley Bombers in the Texas Collegiate League. In those three years, the Bombers overall record was 138-31 earning three top 5 national rankings (5th, 3rd, 3rd). The Bombers won three TCL titles with Gillum in the 3rd base box while also breaking numerous TCL and organizational records offensively. In that time, the Bombers had 15 players drafted and 18 sign professional contracts. In the summer of 2017, Gillum will be traveling to coach in the prestigious Cape Cod League for the Y-D Red Sox. Before coming to SMCC, Gillum served as the recruiting coordinator, hitting, and infield coach at his alma mater East Central University. The Oklahoma native graduated from Latta High School in 2005, where he was a member of 4 state championships. Following high school, he played two years at Seminole State Junior College. Gillum finished his playing career at East Central University earning a degree in Kinesiology (Teacher’s Certification) and a Master’s in Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration.

Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator | 2nd Season

Josh Garcia enters his second season on the SMCC coaching staff serving as the recruiting coordinator and working with the Cougar hitters and catchers.

In Garcia’s first year running the offense South Mountain improved in several categories as a team and individually. Batting Average went up from .311 to .317, On-Base Percentage went from .392 to .415 and Slugging Percentage went from .424 to .435. Runs Scored went from 357 to 421, Stolen Bases went from 68 to 124, Hit by Pitches went from 50 to 70 and Runs Batted in went from 311 to 348.

All team stats were done in 99 fewer Plate Appearances. Markus Montelongo (Long Beach St) went from .272 to .356, had 27 more hits, 23 runs, 15 stolen bases, 4 triples, 3 home runs and 19 RBl’s than the year before. Dusty Wright (Central Arkansas) went from .272 to .392, had 11 more hits 4 more triples and 11 more RBI’s than the year before. Rigo Aguilar (Central Arkansas) went from .317 to .372, had 17 more hits, 9 doubles, 10 RBI’s, 8 stolen bases and 8 walks than the year before. Brian Kiser (New Mexico St) had 20 more runs scored and 10 more stolen bases than the year before. Garcia is a familiar face to SMCC where he was an All-Region and All-Conference player in both his years (2008-2009) playing for the Cougars. After two successful years at SMCC, Garcia transferred to the University of Arizona to finish his playing career. Along with leading Arizona with eight homeruns his senior season, Garcia was also Team Captain during the 2010 and 2011 seasons for the Wildcats. Garcia comes to SMCC after being a full-time assistant for legendary coach Andy Lopez at Arizona. In Garcia’s three years on staff at Arizona each team (2012, 2013, 2015) led the Pac 12 Conference in Batting Average, along with coaching the Pac 12 Batting Champion each year (Johnny Field, Brandon Dixon, Scott Kingery). In 2012 Garcia was a vital part of the coaching staff that helped guide Arizona to their fourth National Championship and a share of the Pac 12 Conference title. In three years at Arizona, Garcia coached 10 hitters that were drafted in the top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft with one (Robert Refsnyder) making his Major League debut with the Yankees in July of 2015. Most recently, Garcia mentored Pirates 2015 first round pick Kevin Newman and Phillies second rounder Scott Kingery.

In 2014, Garcia served as recruiting coordinator and hitting coach at ACCAC conference foe Yavapai College. Garcia’s first recruiting class at Yavapai reached the NJCAA World Series. Garcia attended Phoenix Brophy Prep were he was First Team All-State and First Team All-American his senior year and was drafted in the 46th Round of the 2007 MLB draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Garcia graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Religious Studies.

TURK

Assistant Coach | 2nd Season

Jimmy Turk begins his second year as an assistant coach at South Mountain Community College in 2016. Turk is the outfielders coach and also coaches first base. He assists with hitting, recruiting and strength and conditioning. He was also recently appointed the new Sports Information Director at South Mountain in 2016. In his first season at South Mountain, Turk helped all three Sophomore outfielders go on to Division 1 schools (Long Beach St, New Mexico St and Central Arkansas), including five total Division 1 transfers. The team compiled a 38-20 record which was 4 more wins than the previous year, saw the team average rise from the previous year to .317 and almost doubled the amount of stolen bases to 124. Turk joined the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods League for his first season in 2016 as the team’s hitting coach and third base coach. He helped lead the team to a 36-36 record which was 5 wins more than in 2015 and 9th out of 18 teams overall. Waterloo hit .265 as a team which was 9th out of 18 teams, and saw Adam McGinnis hit .296 with 12HR and 62RBI. McGinnis finished 4th in the league in Home Runs and 3rd in RBI’s and also broke a 22 year old franchise record for RBI’S in a season.

Turk coached two Summer Collegiate All-Americans (Derek Hendrixson - 1st Team and Adam Mcginnis - Honorable Mention) in 2016. Turk heads back to Waterloo again for his second season in 2017 and is in charge of recruiting. Before coaching at South Mountain Community College, Turk coached for seven years at Slammers Baseball during the Fall and Summer in Colorado. Also two years at Ponderosa High School and three years at Cherry Creek High School winning a State Championship in 2012.

During his time at Slammers, Cherry Creek and Ponderosa, Turk coached 148 players who went on to play college baseball, including 73 who went on to play Division 1 baseball and 22 of whom were selected in the MLB Draft. Turk is currently an associate scout for the Tampa Bay Rays. Turk graduated high school from 6A power Owasso, in Oklahoma, winning the 6A state championship his senior year finishing 6th in the nation. Owasso High School has been to the 6A state championship 15 of the last 18 years winning 9 titles. He went on to play at Otero Junior College. From there he proceeded to Oral Roberts University where he was part of a team that received a preseason top 25 ranking after a 50 win season, finishing the season ranked 15 th nationally. ORU had captured the last 15 summit league titles before moving to the Southland conference. He finished his career at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Turk has a BSBA in Management with a minor in Marketing from Colorado State-Pueblo.

PADILLA Assistant Coach | 3rd Season

Dan Padilla is in his 3rd year as an Assistant. His duties include working with the infield, hitters, assisting in recruiting and field maintenance. Summer of 2016, he was the Head Coach of the Pacific Beach Pythons in the San Diego Coastal Collegiate League, where the team led the SDCCL in Wins, Batting Average, Hits, & RBIs while taking the National Division. He was also selected as the Manager for the National Division in the league All Star Game. In the Summer of 2017, he will be coaching with the Matsu Miners of the Alaska Baseball League. Padilla is a SMCC alum (‘12-’13). He then transferred and played one year at Central Christian College in McPherson KS.

DEPARTED COUGARS MARKUS MONTELONGO Markus hit .356 in 188 AB’s in 2016. He had 6 2B, 6 3B, 3 HR and 41 RBI’s. Montelongo also stole 19 bases, had 27 BB’s and 6 HBP. In 150 chances he fielded .980. Montelongo’s 6 3B’s on the year is tied for second all-time single season in South Mountain history wood bat era. Markus will be attending Long Beach St. University in 2017.

DUSTY WRIGHT Dusty hit .392 in 143 AB’s in 2016. He had 7 2B, 5 3B, 1 HR and 27 RBI’s. Wright also stole 7 bases, had 21 BB’s and 6 HBP. Wright was a FirstTeam All-ACCAC and Second-Team D1 All-Region selection. Dusty will be attending the University of Central Arkansas in 2017.

2016 Year in Review RIGO AGUILAR

Rigo hit .372 in 199 AB’s in 2016. He had 16 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR and 53 RBI’s. Aguilar also stole 14 bases, had 23 BB’s and 3 HBP. Aguilar was a Second-Team D1 All-Region selection. Aguilar’s 53 RBI’s is third all-time single season in South Mountain history wood bat era. Rigo will be attending the University of Central Arkansas in 2017.

BRIAN KISER Brian hit .288 in 156 AB’s in 2016. He had 7 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR and 26 RBI’s. Kiser also stole 21 bases which lead the Cougars, had 20 BB’s and 6 HBP. Kiser also had 9 sacrafice hits.

Brian will be attending New Mexico State University in 2017.

MARSHALL SHILL Marshall appeared in 24 games on the mound in 2016. Shill had a 3-0 record with 8 saves, recorded a 2.54 era in 49.2 innings with 24 strikeouts, giving up 46 hits. Shill’s 8 saves was second in the ACCAC. Marshall will be attending Lindenwood University in 2017.

SKYLAR PALERMO Skylar hit .205 in 39 AB’s in 2016. He had 1 3B, 1 HR and 5 RBI’s. Palermo was injured most of the 2016 season. Palermo hit .330 in 97 AB’s in 2015.

He had 9 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR and 23 RBI’s. Skylar will be attending New Mexico Highlands University in 2017.

Coming off a season in which the Cougars went 34-25 and lost in the Semi-Final round of the Region 1 Playoffs to Cochise College in three games, there was some excitement for South Mountain early in the fall as they returned two key arms on the mound and four position players that saw significant time as freshman and a solid group coming in including some transfers. Unforseen factors came into play for the Cougars as they readied to start the 2016 season. Losing their number 1 and 2 starters on the mound hit hard as it thrust some inexperienced freshman into those roles right away. South opened the season against some quality non-conference opponents at home the first couple of weekends. Taking on a solid Western Nevada group that would eventually win 43 games and lose to Yavapai in the District Championship later in the year was a good early test for the young inexperienced group. With Markus Montelongo and Dusty Wright being the only returners to see majority action the year before, the Cougars called upon three Sophomore transfers to step in and help fill roles in Rigo Aguilar, Jacob Aguilar and Brian Kiser. It would be a good early test to see who could step in and contribute for the Cougars. South Mountain faired well beating Western Nevada 3 of 4 on the weekend with a huge comeback of 9 runs in one game. Blake Nelson and Nic Lacayo emerged early as some of the freshman that would help the Cougars offensively and defensively. The Cougars would split a series the following weekend with another perennial power in College of Southern Nevada and would finish off early non-conference heading into conference play at 9-3. South felt good on where they were at playing well and getting some young guys solid innings against good competition. The Cougars would not fair well the first time through the Division 1 schedule of conference however as the lack of returners and inexperience showed. South Mountain started of their conference slate going 3-7. A solid showing over spring break against non-conference competition gave South some confidence heading into the Division 2 slate of their conference schedule.

Needing to show well to put themselves in the playoff hunt the Cougars answered the call going 12-4 improving their overall record to 15-11 in conference. Gaining some valueble innings of experience for the younger guys throughout a very tough conference schedule prepared the Cougars to fair better their second time through the Division 1 conference schedule. Knowing they needed to play better the second time through to have a shot at playoffs the Cougars really elevated their play and got quality play from both sophomores and

freshman stepping up. The Cougars started off the second half by sweeping two games at home against Yavapai which lead to a 7 game winning streak, sweeping Eastern Arizona, Central Arizona and beating Cochise in the first game on the road before losing the second game and ending the streak. South fiinshed at home against Arizona Western needing to take two games and have Yavapai lose one to secure a second seed in the conference and host the first round of Region 1 playoffs. South would win the first but a rained delayed second game hurt the Cougars as they dropped the final game of the regular season. The Cougars had finished the second half 8-2 and were 23-13 overall in conference earning them a three seed where they would travel to take on Yavapai in the first round of the Region Tournament.

For this group to go 38-18 showed alot of character, losing their top 2 arms and a starting position player to injury from the year before.

The team progressed well through the season and were playing really good baseball heading into the playoffs. Splitting the season series with Yavapai 2-2 the Cougars were confident in their chances heading into the playoff however Yavapai is always tough at home. The first game saw the Cougars jump out to a 5-0 lead early but could not hold the lead losing 13-6. On day two South jumped out to an early lead again, after a 2-1 lead through 2 innings, no one scored runs until Yavapai got 2 across in the bottom of the 8th with two outs to take the lead and hold on for the win 3-2 and eliminate the Cougars.

South Mountain finished the year 38-20. Jimmy Dobrash and Pono Anderson had good seasons being thrust in the 1 and 2 role on the mound. Kobie Foppe played solid at short and Connor Hughes was a great fourth outfielder for the Cougars. Tony Sepulveda gave South great innings on the mound coming out of nowhere, Dusty Wright earned First-Team All-ACCAC and Second-Team All-Region and Rigo Aguilar was also named Second-Team All-Region. The Cougars had 9 Sophomores move on to four year schools with 6 going on to Division 1 programs. Rigo Aguliar’s 53 RBI’s is third All-Time SMCC history in a single season during wood bat era. Nic Lacayo’s 14 HBP is tied for 4th, Markus Montelongo’s 6 triples is tied for 2nd and Marshall Shill’s 8 saves is tied for 2nd.

Cota was a 10th round selection of the Kansas City Royals in high school, but opted to attend SMCC in 2004.

After going 12-1 with a 0.98 ERA and 115 strikeouts, Cota signed a 1 million dollar plus contract. Currently with Royals.

Duffy played for the Cougars in 2000 then went on to Arizona State, where he was an 8th round selection of the Pirates.

He holds the single season hit and SB records at SMCC. He is currently the CF for the Pirates, with a MLB career avg of .269.

Interdonato played for South Mountain CC, under coach George Lopez, in 1997 and ‘98.

He received a scholarship to play at UNC-Wilmington.

Following his playing career, Interdonato began coaching at Wofford College in S. Carolina, where he became Head Coach.

Ka’aihue helped lead the 2005 Cougars to the JUCO World Series. In only one year at SMCC, he hit 10 home runs (4 in the JUCO World Series). He is currently in the Atlanta Braves organization, hitting 28 and 22 home runs the last 2 years. Currently in Double-A. Leon played for the Cougars in 2004 and ‘05. In the wood-bat era of the ACCAC, Leon is in the top 5 in hits, runs, stolen bases, avg, and triples in a single season. He signed with the Detroit Tigers in 2005 and in two and a half years, Leon has made his way to Triple-A. Lydy play for SMCC in 1987 and 1989. He was a 2nd round pick of the Oakland Athletics in 1989. Lydy hit 18 total home runs in his two years with the Cougars. He broke into the big leagues in 1993 (A’s) and also played for Baltimore, Chicago, and Houston organizations.

Menchaca pitched and played SS for the Cougars in 2000 and 2001.

He spent the next 5 years in the Seattle Mariners organization. He reached the Triple-A level in 2005.

Eddie is currently a coach for the Seattle Mariners rookie team in Peoria, AZ. Mueller pitched at SMCC in 2005 and ‘06. He is still the career wins, inning, and strikeout leader for South Mountain.

After spending 2007 at Arizona State University, Mueller was drafted in the 21st round by the Baltimore Orioles. He is currently in Single-A. Perrault pitched for the Cougars in 2001 then spent the next 2 years at Arizona State. He signed with the Arizona D-Backs in 2003 and reached Triple-A in 2004. Perrault was picked up by the Washington Nationals in 2005 and is currently pitching at the Double-A level.

Ransom played shortstop for the Cougars in 1995 and ‘96.

He was drafted in the 9th round by the San Francisco Giants, out of Grand Canyon University in 1998. He has played in the big leagues for six seasons, with the Giants, Rangers, Astros and Yankees organizations.

Retherford, along with Ka’aihue, Leon, and Mueller led SMCC to the JUCO World Series in 2005.

He went on to play ‘06 and ‘07 at Arizona State. He also helped lead ASU to the College World Series in 2007. Retherford signed with the White Sox and led the Rookie team in HR and 2B in ‘07.

He was named team MVP in 2008 at the Single-A level.

Vaughan pitched for the Cougars in 2001 and was drafted in the 3rd round by the Boston Red Sox in 2003(Arizona State). He has pitched in the Red Sox org. for the past five seasons. Vaughan holds a career ERA of 3.88 and currently plays for the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket.
