North Haven Garden Club will have a meeting on Thursday February 9, 2017 at the North Haven Congregational Church on 28 Church St, across from the Green, at 7:30 pm. The program “WOODY PLANT CARE” by Jude Hsiang. Jude is a certified UCONN Extension Master Gardener and coordinator for the program in New Haven County. She works at Broken Arrow Nursery and is a member of the boards of the Experiment Station Associates and the Connecticut Botanical Society. For years Jude has been exploring the use of plant pigments as dyestuff’s for fabrics and yarn.

Jude’s presentation will focus on selecting, planting, and caring for trees and shrubs for the gardener in our area.

The meeting is open to the public for a $5.00 guest donation.

Hamden: At the February 14th meeting of the Hamden Art League renown artist Deborah Quinn-Munson will present “Pastels and Watercolor – 80/20 Composition Is Everything”. Ms. Quinn-Munson will give a short presentation of her 80/20 concept which breaks the painting process down and illustrates the importance of designing with shape, value and color. She will follow with ‘an instant demo’ of a watercolor underpainting to which she will then apply pastel to enhance the color, value and selected details of her composition.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION The North Haven School District announces kindergarten registration as follows: Each elementary school in North Haven will be holding registration for incoming kindergarten students. A child is eligible to attend if he/she will be (5) years of age on or before January 1, 2018. North Haven: 40% of businesses never reopen again after suffering through a natural disaster, while another 25% later fail. So said Susan Shaw of Connecticut Rises, a statewide natural disaster recovery group. Shaw spoke recently at the North Haven Rotary, stressing the importance of preparedness and volunteering to mitigate damage from the next natural disaster.

Hamden’s Property Taxes

To The Editor: January 16, 2017 It is no surprise that Hamden’s property taxes have continued to increase. Both renters and property owners must pay. In the case of renters’ higher property taxes means more rent will be due at the end of each month. Property owners will see higher monthly mortgage payments or higher bi-­annual tax payments. Residents of Hamden have become accustomed to annual tax increases. The most recent budget passed by the Legislative Council saw the mil rate increase from 40.86 to 46.36 or 13%.

Property owners can no longer rely on local government officials to practice fiscally sound policies. They are going to the courts believing their voices continue to go unheard and that they are subject to taxation without adequate representation. Their last hope is that non-­ politicized third party (judge) will rule in their favor granting some relief to what they perceive to be an unduly heavy tax burden.

In response, the Legislative Town Committee has appropriated $100,000 of your money to put down any resistance to their authority to tax and spend. I find it ironic that the very folks who must argue in court for tax relief must also have to pay the town in the form of property taxes so the town can defeat their petition. This is madness.

It is no secret that registered voters in Hamden outnumber Republicans by at least 4 to 1. Thus, Democrats have had a stranglehold on Hamden’s finances for decades. The concentration of power in the hands of a few politicians have insulated them from any fear of voter revolt due to the lopsidedness of the numbers. In November, Hamden voters must decide if the course we are on is the right one or should we consider another approach. We cannot tax and spend our way out of this mess. In the coming weeks and months Republicans will lay out a path to end the madness. I am hopeful the voting public will weigh in this November and deliver a resounding mandate to change our course to more fiscally sound policies. The answer is not far off.

This whole budget process culminates with the Referendum on May 16 where the citizens will vote to accept or reject the proposed Budget. In principle, all this is truly democracy at its finest.

I will do my best to keep you informed every step of the way. The Board of Selectmen had a budget workshop on January 9. That workshop is one of my favorite meetings of the year;; it’s always at 8:00 AM, so it’s “just us.” Rest assured, the three members of your , BS, CPT, CSH BOS worked hard and well together. We submitted a budget to the BOF with the hope that there will be no need for a tax increase. Only time will tell if that hope can be realized.

But then a few weeks ago, it was reduced to only $3.8 million. Well folks, don’t panic;; the 3.8 million is still $500,000 higher than the $3.3 million we anticipated and budgeted for last spring. Like I said, pay close attention when people point to Hartford for blame.

Walt became seriously interested in woodworking soon after retiring as a Mechanical Engineer, and set up a well-equipped woodworking shop. Projects include custom furniture, unique custom moldings, and a rose arbor for the Cultural Center’s Colonial Garden.

He is also making maple bowls from a tree planted by his greatgreat grandfather in about 1845. Walt counted 175 growth rings in the tree trunk and found “tap holes” from maple sugaring done about 65 years ago.

Hamden Woman’s Club

North Haven: For every person addicted to opioids, many more people are affected. The opioid epidemic is a very real and dangerous public health crisis. Over ninety lives are lost each day in America as a direct result of prescription painkiller and heroin overdoses.

In Angel’s Arms is a company that serves to provide brutally honest, upfront information and education to the families of opioid addicts. The company is hosting an Overdose Workshop to help spread awareness regarding the dangers of opioid overdoses and suggestions on how to handle it should you witness one.

Those who attend the event will learn how to identify an overdose and understand when a person is most susceptible to suffer one. Topics of discussion include a demonstration of CPR, and information about the opioid reversal medication called Narcan including how it works, where to get it, and how to administer it. A limited number of Narcan kits will be available for a suggested donation of $45.

The workshop is free to attend and open to anyone who needs or wants the information. Please keep in mind the very graphic nature of discussion when it comes

to bringing young children to this event. This workshop is intended to be a safe space for anyone dealing with an opioid crisis to ask questions related to heroin, prescription painkillers, Narcan, and other relevant topics.

In Angel’s Arms offers many services to the community in addition to educational workshops including Recovery Coaching for addicts and their families, youth drug education, and motivational speaking. Recovery Coaching can be an asset to families who are overwhelmed and confused by their loved one’s addiction and need guidance to help understand the disease and identify appropriate treatment options.

Clients also learn strategies to help deal with an addict who is resistant to intervention. Addicts themselves can benefit from Recovery Coaching as an added level of support in addition to traditional treatment and professional counseling.

SHA Students Create Awareness Of The Power Of Words Peer Connection Words Matter Initiative

Hamden: The Sacred Heart Academy Peer Connection student organization, in conjunction with the Academy’s Guidance Department, is running a year-long Words Matter initiative. In the “How Words Can Build You Up or Tear You Down” campaign, Peer Connectors (PCs) work with underclassmen speaking to the power and impact of words through role playing, digital media, pamphlets, and guest speakers.

Since fall, black and white photos of PCs with words that have had a negative impact on them have been on display throughout the school. As the school year progresses, color photos of PC members with words that promote positive self-image will be displayed. In December, PCs created and presented skits to underclassmen demonstrating the impact of words.

Peer Connection, founded in 1984, is made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who embrace a “reaching out of hands” mission statement to provide support to others in the community. To become a “PC,” students go through an extensive application process and, if accepted, a rigorous training process. “Peer Connectors truly embody the values of Sacred Heart,” shared a member of the organization.

Award-Winning Puppetry Troupe To Perform “Jack And The Beanstalk”

Hamden: The Hamden Arts Commission will bring back the multi-award-winning puppetry troupe, Crabgrass Theatre, to the Hamden stage on February 4, as part of its Saturday Afternoon Family Entertainment Series.

The nationally-touring troupe will present their version of the classic tale, “Jack and the Beanstalk.” This innovative and exciting production is a feast of visuals and sound with a stunning, two-tiered stage, big and beautiful puppets, a rhymespouting giant, a marvelous growing beanstalk and a delightful musical score.

The event begins at 2 pm and will be held in the handicapped-accessible Thornton Wilder Hall, Miller Cultural Complex, 2901 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. Arthur F. Caldwell Jr., passed away Sunday January 15, 2017. Art’s story began on Friday, February 13, 1948.

He was the second child born to Arthur F. Caldwell Sr., and Agnes (Daunis) Caldwell and joined big sister Charlotte (Caldwell) Healey. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he proudly served his country in the Seventh Engineering Battalion, First Marine Division as a Combat Engineer in Vietnam before being honorably discharged.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; his daughter Kelli (#1 Girl), her husband Paul and their three children Nicholas (17), Jeremy (15) and Abigail (8); his daughter Kimberly (Peanut), her husband John and their two children Shauna (12) and Johnny (9); and his son Christopher (Da-Boy), his wife Kelly and their two children Qin (10) and Suze (7); as well as his siblings, Charlotte Healey, James Hannon, Maureen Orazietti and Tricia Slowik.

Maria Mendes Da Fonte Pires, 95, of Wallingford, wife of the late Antonio Gomes Pires, passed away Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 at Masonicare.

She was born in Portugal on Feb. 22, 1921, a daughter of the late Aurora Mendes and Francisco Da Fonte. In 1980 she came to the United States to be with family and soon was reunited with all four of her children.

She is survived by her daughters, Maria Aurora Jorge and her husband, Frank of Cheshire, and Aida Da Costa and her husband, Domingos of Milford, Mass.; her sons, Manuel Pires and his wife, Adilia, and Antonio Pires and his wife, Lisa, all of Wallingford; her siblings, Amaro Da Fonte and Aurora Do Eirao of Massachusetts; her grandchildren, Cristina Schwarz, Celeste Sobkiewicz, Nelia Guzik, Melissa Da Costa, Joshua Pires, and Noah Pires; her great-grandchildren, Kyle, Sonia, Romero, Neve, Lydia, and Adam; and several nieces and nephews.

Carl Christian Clark, Jr., 90 of Wallingford died suddenly at his home on Thursday, January 12, 2017. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy May Carroll Clark, and the late Anna Cofrancesco Clark. Carl was born in New Haven on February 5, 1926, a son of the late Carl Christian and Viola Hemstock Clark, Sr. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres.

Anthony (Tony) F. DiNicola, 86, of Hamden and Cheshire, passed away Wednesday, 18th January, peacefully and with loving family present. He was the beloved husband of Dolores Criscuolo DiNicola, who have been together for over 70 years and married for 65.

Tony was born in New Haven on December 7, 1930; son of the late Frank and Maddelena Palo DiNicola and served his country faithfully in the US Air Force. Father of Mark R. (Roberta) DiNicola, Anthony K. DiNicola, Cynthia A. (Raymond) Sirico and Tina M. Anita Louise DePino Palmieri, 51 of Hamden died peacefully on Friday, January 13, 2017 at the Connecticut Hospice, Branford after a long courageous battle with cancer, and with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Pietro Palmieri. Anita was born in New Haven on January 15, 1965, a daughter of the late Robert and Louise Cimmino DePino, and had resided in New Haven for most of her life before moving to Hamden twenty years ago.

Anita is survived by three daughters, Teresa L. Palmieri, Melissa M. Palmieri and Anita L. Palmieri, and one son, Peter A. Robert F. “Bob” Cremin, 83, of Wallingford passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret “Peggy” Augur Cremin. Robert was born in New Haven on June 11, 1933; son of the late Maurice and Helen Meany Cremin; served his country faithfully in the US Navy during the Korean War. Paul Joseph Rebeschi Sr., 88 of Branford passed away suddenly on Friday, January 13, 2017 at YNNH with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Olga Marie Rebeschi for 62 years. Paul was born in North Haven, CT on December Fourth, 1928, son of the late Joseph and Zorida Rebeschi. Paul served in the US Army during the Korean War and held the rank of Master Sergeant.

Cynthia Gagne’ of Northford died in her home on Saturday January 14. She was the wife of David Gagne’ of Northford.

She was the mother of David Edward Gagne’ (wife Anatar) of Northford. She was the sister of Sharron Burke of Niantic and Elizabeth Geuther (husband George) of New Haven. She is also survived by her dogs, Lila, Chico, Maisy, and Romeo. She was predeceased by her brother Terrance Lawrence Helminski.

Cynthia was born in Milwaukee on April 5, 1947, a daughter of the late Edward John Helminski and Elizabeth Louise Mauro of Branford. She was a member of the Hamden Elks Club and the Wallingford V.F.W. She was greatly loved by all who knew her.

Gertrude Eber passed away peacefully on December 18, 2016 at Whitney Center in Hamden, CT. Augusta Kaltman, known to friends and family as Trudy Eber, was born January 16, 1922 in the Bronx. She lived on Jackson Avenue (149 St) and then College Avenue, near her father’s Colonial Laundry on 167 Street. Her older brother Herbie and younger brother Leo were her siblings and lifelong friends.

Trudy and her friend Libby Barlas enrolled in Julia Richmond High School on the East Side for one year, but they transferred to Morris High School, the neighborhood school. Trudy thrived in her English and French classes while devouring books from the Public Library. Unfortunately, the Depression eliminated college as an option for the struggling family, so her formal education ended.

Trudy married her devoted husband, Morty, in 1945, their son Stuart was born.

Trudy was a committed anti-war activist. From the nuclear disarmament movement of the Cold War to the current efforts to curb gun violence, she was always willing to speak out publicly for preventing wars and murders.

When Stu turned twelve, Turdy reentered the workforce. She had a successful career as an executive assistant in an import business and a floral ribbon company because of her writing skills and work ethic.

Trudy’s grandsons, David and Michael, were her price and joy. And their children, Mason, Chase, Drew and Meghan, were four sources of “nochas.”

Trudy’s love of reading and writing continued through her whole life.

She also learned how to paint, the evidence of that was seen in her apartment and the hallways of Whitney Center.

Trudy and Morty moved to Whitney from Westchester County in 2000.

Morty died suddenly in 2003. Whitney was a true home for Trudy, a place where she met so many new friends and where her talents and interests flourished and were appreciated.

Her remains were entrusted to the New Rochelle Funeral Home, and are ploaced to rest at Wellwood Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY. A remembrance, “Trudy Eber In Her Own Words,” will be held at Whitney Center, 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden, CT on March 25 at 2:30pm.

Richard P. Reynolds, 76, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2017 with family by his side. Richard was the beloved husband of Catherine A. Reynolds for more than 53 years. A lifelong resident of Northford, he was born on April 13th, 1940; son of the late Edward T. Reynolds and Eleanor B. Fourth Annual Chili Cook Off

Hamden: Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven’s Sleeping Giant Build will hold its Fourth Annual Chili Cook Off on Sat., February 4, from 5-8pm at the Unitarian Society of New Haven, 700 Hartford Turnpike.

Aspiring or champion chili chefs, chili aficionados or those who just love to eat chili are invited to the Habitat for Humanity Sleeping Giant Build’s Fourth Annual Chili Cook Off. Guests sample meat and vegetarian chilies and vote for their favorites while chefs earn awards and bragging rights. A raffle and silent auction will also be held during the event.

All proceeds from the Chili Cook Off will go to benefit our homebuilding efforts in the New Haven and Hamden area in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven.

Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Children 12 and under are free. The entry fee for chili chefs is $5.

The Hamden Fathers’ 8th Grade Girls Travel Team used a balanced attack to upend Greenwich 41-31 Sunday at Hamden Middle School.

Hamden Fathers’ was led by their strong front court of Kandie Everette, Cami Tate and Montsho Canton. Everette scored a game high 13 points followed by Tate with 9. Tate also helped control the paint with several blocked

Rounding out the scoring for Hamden was Jada Murphy with 4 points and Diamond White with 1. The victory raised Hamden Fathers’ record to 3-1 in the FCBL and 6-3 overall.

Hamden: The Hamden Arts Commission will present the Elm City Girls’ Choir as part of its 2016 - 2017 season of “Peter C. Hereld Sensational Sunday Performance Series.”

On January 29, the Elm City Girls’ Choir will make their debut in Hamden’s Sunday Series with a performance entitled “United in Song.” Founded in 1993, the choir has received national recognition, touring extensively throughout North America and Europe, and has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Disney World, and on national television. Thirty-six members of the choir will take the stage.

Hamden: The ladies of St. Rita Church of Hamden, Ct. have formed a new Columbiettes Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus. An initiation ceremony was conducted in the parish hall on Saturday, January 14, followed by an installation of officers. The ceremonies were conducted by ladies of the Connecticut State Auxiliary. Kathi Wheatley, president of the new organization, expressed joy that her dream had finally come to fruition. After the ceremonies, the ladies were served a dinner prepared by the Knights of Columbus.

The Columbiettes is an organization of over 13,000 women who are affiliated with the Knights of Columbus. There are over 245 auxiliaries in the United States and Canada. Wallingford: The Wallingford Garden Club presented two awards at the January meeting. John H. Smith IV Hi, I turned twelve years old on January 18, 2017. I am now in the sixth grade it’s my first year in a new school. I am really having a good year and having a lot of fun. I have made a lot of new friends, I still have so many of my old friends with me from Middle School, I made the honor roll. This year I played flag football again and had a pretty good season, I think we only lost one game. I am playing basketball now and we have a really good team, I have gotten much better this year.

Most of my friends are playing too so that gives us more time together.

My sister Jayden and I spend a lot of time playing on our new lap tops and xbox we got this Christmas.

We had Christmas breakfast with two of our cousins, Isaiah and Sydney and exchanged gifts. My Mom (Tori) and Dad (John) are having a special birthday party for me and all my family and friends are coming.

Sydney Bridget Smith Hi, I will be four years old on January 26, 2017. This year is my second year of preschool, and I am learning so many new things.

My big brother Isaiah is now in the second grade and getting so much homework. My teacher gives me homework to, but not as much as Isaiah. I have made some new friends in school and I am having fun playing with the other kids.

Santa came to my house and gave me a lot of toys. I got a new kitchen, a lot of food to cook, some games and lots of toys. We had Christmas breakfast at our house and I got to see my cousins Johnnie and Jayden, and we exchanged gifts.

Later we went to New London and had dinner with my other cousins Paul and Madison. My Mom (Kristen) and my Dad (Dave) are having a Birthday party for me and all my cousins and friends are coming. It is going to be so much fun.

Anyone can experience hypothermia, although the young and the old are most at risk. Carry a winter survival kit in your car: sand, scraper, flashlight, flares, tools, blankets and some food. Indoors, keep your home above 65 degrees F for most of the time you are there.

If you know a senior who lives alone, make sure they are staying warm. Check on them frequently in cold weather months especially during storms. Help them to make arrangements for snow removal. Be sure they have their medications filled with a couple of “safety” days worth, in case they become snow bound.

If you suspect that a family member has hypothermia, get medical help right away. A delay could cause serious harm. Keep the person warm with blankets. Remove clothing if it is wet and replace with dry clothes. Handle the person gently and as little as possible. Sharp or quick movements could trigger heart rhythm problems. Do not try to rewarm the person in a tub. Do not massage the skin. Both of these actions could cause harm. In fact, handle the person as gently and as little as possible.

QVHD offers the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine (in the form of Tdap-tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) to parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, babysitters and other caregivers or contacts of newborns and infants 12 months and younger. If you are over age 18 and have never had a Tdap vaccine, (a combined booster immunization containing tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis protection) you are eligible to receive this vaccine. Coping with the Winter Blues

Hamden: Do you find yourself “down” in these winter days?

Lacking in enthusiasm and ambition? If you do, come to a discussion sponsored by Aging At Home on how to cope with these feelings. It will take place at the Spring Glen Church, 1825 Whitney Avenue on Thurs., Jan. 26 at 1pm. The discussion will be led by Dru Cherry, MSSW, LCSW and Sarah Whitson, MSW, LCSW. Come and share your stories and the ways you have learned (or not learned) to deal with the cold, snow and the short days.

You are also welcome to come if you don’t get the winter blues but might be able to offer some helpful hints to keeping cheery in this season.

This program is aligned with the mission of Aging At Home, the Greater Hamden based “village” which is a program of Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers and is committed to providing members with a social community and support services that enable them to stay in their own homes with independence and dignity.
