ADVENTRUE + DARKNESS
A STOP ALONG THE WAY
The Stop Along the Way project revolves around the idea of an adventure. While there is only one structure visible from ground level, there are multiple spaces beneath with views of stunning natural light from above. The space aims to encourage the traveler to break from the beaten path and explore the unknown, while continuing their journey. This project was meant to be made up of subtractive and additive spaces that explore beautiful light. The entrance and exit are the subtractive spaces that hold up to four people. The two space in the center are additive and created by adding material underground as well as allowing the light to cut through the rooftop.
The two subtractive spaces were designed to bring the traveler in and out of the site. Immediately they face a decision as the entrance branches in two directions. The perspective images above show the experience each traveler will go through as they make their way further into each space. There is a mix of compression and expansion they will feel when entering the larger space. The exit consists of shear grade elevation as they make their way back to ground level.
The model was constructed of cardboard and wood. The cardboard acts as the natural ground that I cut out of to create the subtractive spaces. The wood allowed me to explore the meaning of additive spaces and how they can mix with the ground and other subtractive spaces as well as showing stunning light throughout.
INTENTION & REALITY
A WORLD DRAWN OUT
A World Drawn Out. project revolves around the idea of describing an architectural term to my fellow classmates by observing the built environment of the Seattle Central Public Library and creating hand and digital plans, sections and diagrams. The diagrams aim to describe the program I witnessed during my sit studies on the 4th floor of the Library called the “Red Room”. The diagrams to the right show the three programs I witnessed that include photography, conferences and individuals bypassing the space and not interacting with anything on the fourth floor at all.
NATURE INSPIRED + FORTHRIGHT
BUILDING SPACE IN PLAN OBLIQUE
Building Space in Plan oblique is a project that first introduced a plan oblique to visualize the architecture and spatial qualities of the Physics and astronomy tower at the University of Washington. I had to imagine, design, and draw a unique 3d view of the entry threshold and adjacent building space on the interior and exterior. I added some color in the drawings to highlight the vegetation in the open courtyard that led to the compressed entry threshold.
For this project I also created four perspective drawings to illustrate the feeling and mood of an individual walking from outside, through the front main entry into the lobby on the first floor. I also created a scaled plan, elevation and section drawing to provide detailed information for the viewer.
TONE & LINE
SPATIAL CORNER
A Spatial Corner project required hand drawn images of a single corner in Gould Hall that included three major x, y, z planes. This corner had to include at least three distinct building materials such as concrete, steel and glass. The drawing aim to show half line and half tone illustrations that represent a full range of lighted surfaces. Each drawing for this assignment was done from direct observation and with freehand lines, while only using a straight edge to lay down the guidelines.
MILITARY COMPASS
SIX VIEWS OF AN OBJECT
The Six Views of An Object project focused on hand drawn images of a common utilitarian object that could be held in one hand. I decided to use a compass from the military because I knew it would be challenging but also would be perfect for me to practice drawing curves in multiple views. I studied and analyzed the proportions of the object in order to draw the six images in 2D. I had to ensure I graphically analyzed the compass for its shape, proportions, and underlying geometry. With the information I was able to gather on the object I was able to produce an isometric view of the compass in great detail and accurate proportion.
DEFINING SPATIAL EDGES + TONES
COMPOSITE ISOMETRIC + DIGITAL
The Composite Isometric and Digital project was a project that I designed using two isometric objects from a previous project. The two objects were to be doubled allowing me four objects to design with, but the four objects had to be connected. Two of the objects had to be stacked vertically but every object had to be offset from one another to avoid aligning surfaces. This project required that I create multiple iterations in my sketchbook and on trace to create the alignment and direction each object would face.
HONOR + COURAGE + COMMITMENT
SEMPER FIDELISSemper Fidelis is the Marines Corps moto which means Always Faithful. Always faithful to Corps, Country and God. I served eight years as a United States Marine Infantryman. During my eight years I served many positions but the one position that had the largest impact on my life was when I was an Infantry Squad Leader. Tasked with leading 12 Marines in combat I was able to grow as a leader in many ways. The Marines Corps has taught me the value of teamwork and better ways to communicate with individuals from all over the world.
