THEEDITOR'SCORNER Probably the biggest obstacle anyone faces when they first have a great idea is to start. Most people with absolute genius inside of them die in unfulfilled obscurity because they were still waiting for the perfect time and the right conditions to start. For me, I'd rather be eating a half baked pie than to die of starvation. When this magazine launched a few months ago, I believed in, not only what it started out as, but what it would inevitably become. I believed that NGO leaders and humanitarians would understand and embrace my vision of creating a forum for all of us to share our solutions and visions for a better world. This is our magazine, everyone has a voice. It is not "The Jim Show" though the early issues were mostly my own writings while waiting for others to step up. I was not disappointed as you will see in this issue. Several inspired people are sharing their stories with us now.

Your are going to read contributions by Ms. Pam Cavallo who shares her program called Brain ABCs that is developing young minds. Ms. Hope Ansanelli, a former U.S. Peace Corp volunteer, who shares her views about the importance of mentorship. Mr. William I. Johnson of Tanzania's Sawil Pax Upendo Academy Centre for Children that is touching the lives of the disadvantaged, shares his passion and vision for a brighter future in East Africa.

I promised that this would be a magazine that you would feel and experience and not just read. We may care most about our own lives, circumstances and issues, but as feeling human beings and part of one global family, it is impossible to ignore the suffering of the destitute and even more so, to ignore the solutions being initiated by selfless humanitarians and the victories that we are celebrating. Consider how excited people become watching television shows when their heroes climb out of impossible challenges. This is real life my friends. Real heroes and real challenges with real victories and brilliant accomplishments.

This magazine gives you the opportunity to join us in the excitement and celebration as we lift single mothers, abandoned children and those living in unimaginable destitution into a new life and give them a ray of hope, a door of escape and a vision in front of them to strive toward.

The real heroism is how much has been accomplished by so few in virtual obscurity. We thank those heroes with our growing publication.

Heroes The world is full of heroism if you know where to look. There are selfless people everywhere who you will never hear about, reaching outside of their comfort zones and feeding the hungry, clothing those in rags and getting homeless people out of the cold, lonely streets at night. Adversity, whether their own or that of others, is what moves them to act when the rest of the world can not be bothered. It is the adversities, perhaps their own suffering that prompted their humanitarianism. You rarely hear of the child of a mega-star in any field becoming a mega-star themselves. More often you see someone become a hero after years of silence but persistent struggle. Trials and tribulations until the formula for success emerges. Then you wonder why you haven't hear of them sooner.

Villains It's easy to be a villain. You don't need to set out to destroy Gotham City or mail Superman Kryptonite. In the words of Edmund Burke, "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." Villains by omission. There is no neutral ground in the struggle to make a better world, not just for yourself but for others too. If you see suffering and walk past it, hear the cries of the destitute and ignore it and watch desperation around you and decide that it is not your problem, you are part of the reason for the suffering.

THETALLESTMIDGET Many people get out of bed every morning, drag themselves into a job and do just enough to keep themselves from being fired. One of the most powerful things that true humanitarians have is the passion to make their piece of the world a better place. Limitless. They seek out new solutions and better situations in places that would suffer crippling inertia without them. It isn't for a paycheck, most of us serve without one of those. We don't engage in the world's problems to stay just ahead of whoever is just behind us. Humanitarians reach into the impossible and create what has never been realized before. The idea of the "Tallest Midget" is how, too many people in the "Real World", live their lives. Looking to do the bare minimum of effort, making just enough money to pay the bills, doing just enough to keep the boss off their backs and treat the family just well enough to avoid a divorce and having kids that hate you. Average, ordinary, plain vanilla. On their deathbeds the mounting regrets are daggers that stab into their hearts.

Why do people realize what their lives could have been only when it's too late?

Recently, I heard someone say that they don't have to be faster than the fastest lion, only faster than the slowest gazelle. I came from a city where I was among friends and associates that, to this day, are experts in shortcuts, sidesteps, getting along by going along and assorted excuses. As the world's challenges mount around them, their sole concern is whether or not they will have to work late and miss their bowling night night.

Altruistic individuals are eager to sink their teeth into their impossible dreams. Their challenges are opportunities, waiting to be discovered. The tallest midgets in the world will never seek out those opportunities, therefore they think that they don't even exist.

People who are oblivious to problems don't look for solutions.

resourcefulness, can alleviate the suffering of people that perhaps they may never even meet. Do we do it all, everyday, perfectly every time? Oh Hell no! Failure nips at the heels of everyone that ever tried to accomplish anything no matter what field they were in. In fact, history teaches us that most new endeavors have a 10% chance of success with a 90% chance of failure, initially. Most see this and want to play it safe. Plant themselves in an office cubicle, get their reports in by Friday, get that paycheck and punch out. Human Drones that will soon be replaced by mechanical ones. AI is coming.

My friends there are no prizes, no award ceremonies for mediocrity and average. Ordinary is invisibility and the ones who are grinning ear to ear because they didn't get laid off, cut from the team, fired or whose life partner is still there when they got home, have died already and it is just the dirt in their faces and the wooden box that will make it official some years later.

Every amazing technological advancement in which companies are inventing, fields of medicine, science and artificial intelligence were, at one point, just the imagination of ordinary people, like you and I, who couldn't bear to live ordinary lives any longer.

Let's be one of those people, for the good of us all.

Mentorship should not be overlooked.

When I was a Peace Corps volunteer and hell, when I was making big decisions in my own life, I have found that having a long-term mentor was crucial to success. The children I worked with in Moche, just outside the city of Trujillo in Northern Peru, were very outgoing, extroverted, and full of potential.

Getting them to continuously show up for classes or courses that would give them useful skills, however, proved to be quite a challenge. Kids would ?show up? during unstructured activities. For example, everyday I walked out my door, a band of kids, almost like my own personal entourage, would start following me, asking me to play (and we would play for hours).

When those same kids and their parents, however, asked for English classes, the outcome would always be the same; initial excitement at the start and then dwindling participation.

This made me think, "okay, kids need discipline". On another instance, I attended a few sessions of a leadership summer program designed for the community?s youth in Moche that focused on discipline. I was there to shadow and observe the Municipality worker who led the course, and what I saw was not a need for discipline but a want for mentorship. The Municipality worker gave them workshops and showed them videos, but she wasn?t sitting one-on-one with the kid(s) and learning about their specific interests. When I was making big decisions throughout my teens and early twenties, I needed guidance. Fortunately for me, my brother was always there; he understood me well and knew which advice made sense to give and which to not. Kids need mentors who KNOW them and show that through the ideas and suggestions they offer. In all of my time in Moche, I never saw a teacher, or social program leader, give the kids specific one-on-one instruction or help. I would see traces of this with their parents, but sometimes, and I speak for many of us when I say this, we don?t always follow our parent?s advice or even receive the best guidance. The same goes for all children around the world; we need good mentors who work one-on-one with the youth if we want to see more empowered kids.

I sat on a Toronto runway in a plane that was being delayed because of a mechanical issue.

For three hours. Every twenty minutes the pilot came on the intercom to apologize for the delay. I don't think the Wright brothers had this many issues getting off the ground. Two movies later we were airborne. Arriving in Miami, everybody was frantically scrambling to make their connecting flights. I had a long layover so it didn't much matter where I parked myself. Do you believe in the energy of the Universe, a force greater than yourself that moves you toward or away from circumstances for a reason? I do. The delay caused me to be guided toward a lady and her partner who happened to be sitting next to me in an airport restaurant. We struck up a conversation and learned that we both work with children.

Pam Cavallo's program is BrainABCs. I was impressed, not only by her program, but the passion with which she shared it. There is a difference between someone doing a job to make a living and someone who does a job to make a difference. Pam believes she can develop young minds with her program and in so doing, change lives. I wanted to share her story and program in this magazine because of its value, her passion and commitment to make the world a better place.

As a special education teacher with over 30 years? experience, my desire to have an everlasting impact has never wavered. I believe that everyone can learn, can change and can grow. In fact, that has been a motto of mine not only in my classrooms and therapy practice, but in my personal life as well. You see, to create change, sometimes we have to look deeper than the ?behavioral? aspect of learning. We must look at the way individual brains are wired, how they take in information and then how they process that information in order to learn. Well, research studies from the 80?s taught us that through specific movements, we can actually rewire the brain and improve neural functioning from one side of the brain to the other. As much as I understood this concept, it was difficult for me to implement in my daily teachings. The experts in the field recommended walking in a figure eight pattern either by using tape on the floor, yarn or walking around two objects (chairs, toys, etc.)

Sounds easy enough, right? Well for some maybe it is, but that was not my experience. I needed something that would help my students and clients stay the course and maneuver their bodies through each turn of the figure 8 pathway. So, in the fall of 2016, I made a decision, and a promise to myself, that I would consistently encourage my clients to walk in a figure 8 pattern prior to any play or learning activity. I knew the result could be life changing! After months of trial and error I finally found it! A color-coded figure 8 on a soft mat material. And, low and behold, the neuromat was born. To date, I have witnessed amazing results. I am able to watch how an individual moves their bodies as they follow the colored circles on the neuromat. It is easy to determine what side of their brain is the dominate side.

Through repetition, the movement enhances brain activity to the non-dominate side.

So the quest began.

After months of trial and error I finally found it! A color-coded figure 8 on a soft mat material. And, low and behold, the neuromat was born. To date, I have witnessed amazing results. I am able to watch how an individual moves their bodies as they follow the colored circles on the neuromat. It is easy to determine what side of their brain is the dominate side. Through repetition, the movement enhances brain activity to the non-dominate side, which increases neurological processes.

But now the question begs, ?If I can change the lives of the children I work with, why can?t I change lives around the world??

This not only works with children, but adults as well. The reason is because the human brain has the capability to change throughout our lifetime. My vision, and mission, is to get the neuromat in as many communities as I can around the world. Those that are impoverished and do not have the resources to educational A child uses the Neuromat which creates programs and much needed therapy services could benefit from brain development unlike any other the neuromat. I?m looking for supporters and financial partners to program. help me influence and change more lives. It doesn?t matter where you live in the world, you should still have access to life-changing tools.

So what exactly is the neuromat? Well, it is a colorful, fun and easy way to facilitate walking in a figure 8 pattern. It offers parents, teachers and therapists a multi-sensory approach to teaching virtually any person at any age how to walk (forward/backward), crawl, hop, skip or jump in a simple figure 8 pattern. For years, we have known that this type of motor movement helps the brain to create new neural pathways and in turn make the brain more efficient. As one moves through the figure 8 pattern, the brain has to quickly send and receive sensory data from one hemisphere to the other.

The motor movement of walking in a figure 8 pattern is based on years of research. (www.infinitywalk.org) This strategic method encourages the brain to integrate many functional skills at the same time, thus increasing its ability to multi-task. When the brain is able to process sensory information, and turn those messages into appropriate motor actions, learning takes place. There are many different cognitive ability levels, but the ability to use the brain to the best of its?ability, is a skill that must be developed, practiced and maintained.

Research confirms that the brain is a very powerful and pliable tool. When a new neuropathway is formed, it must be practiced in order to become a learned skill. This new skill must be practiced again and again and again. Having said that, it is when this new skill becomes difficult and you work through the difficulty, that real change occurs. Muscles react much the same way. A muscle gets stronger when fatigue sets in and the muscle is pushed to go further. Think of your brain as the most important muscle in your body.

What I have found is that the vision of fund raisers is a tad myopic . There is no doubt that most NGOs are created for the betterment of those in dire need and desperation. Our own project, Changes for New Hope, also is a 100% donor sponsored and supported project and without contributions we would be in dire need and desperation ourselves.

The sad fact of the matter though is that most people are so engaged in their own lives, their own sense of what is important and their own personal satisfactions that the kids on a mountainside of the Peruvian Andes is the least of their concern. If people are being 100% honest, how concerned are they really about the sanitation issue in a Ugandan village or the dozens of people infected with malaria in a Nicaraguan pueblo? It isn't their issue.

People resent being shown, what I call, Poverty Porn. Miserable images of suffering children with flies buzzing about their heads, guilt laden videos of teary eyed hosts crying that death is inevitable without your immediate support. Guilt, like fear, is a poor motivator and in my view needs to be avoided like the plague that they are crying about. There is a way to present an ask, which does not insult the intelligence, nor rips out their hearts in the process. NGO leaders are not modern day Robin Hoods taking from the rich and giving to the poor.

After spending twenty years as a sales professional and mentor, I learned that people do what is in their own best interests almost without exception. People want to feel good about supporting a project as much as they want to feel good about eating in a fine restaurant. They wouldn't dine at a greasy spoon with health department violations and they wouldn't want to support a project that is not showing a record of success and a continuing pattern of actual support for those they purport to help. People love winners, they want to gather around the superstars, the successful in business and the entertainer with the largest crowds. Before you can eat apples, my friends, you have to plant apple seeds. It doesn't happen in reverse order. Sponsors want to see the success and how you are effective with what support you already have. A thousand wonderful ideas are, well, wonderful, but without results showing how a donor 's hard earned support was spent, those new dollars will never leave their wallets. I believe that people are good hearted and want to support the less fortunate in the world. I believe that they will contribute to your project but only if you are willing to get the order right. The horse before the cart.

Action, progress, results. Everybody has the audio part down pat, the visual is what supporters need to see. As project leaders, it is our responsibility to show we are the Real Deal. It is our responsibility to show that we have been as effective as possible with what we have been given. It is then donors will feel comfortable to join you in helping the less fortunate of this world. Then we all become heroes.

We want to recognize those individuals who are tucked away in places most wouldn't be able to find on a map, in virtual obscurity. The world will always recognize the high profile and glamorous people. This humanitarian award program is to connect the unsung heroes and heroines to the rest of the world. It is to honor their service and sacrifice, raise awareness for their projects and to gain support for the people they are selflessly helping with what resources they have available to them.

MEET OUR HERO AND HUMANITARIAN OF THE MONTH W ILLIAM I. JOHNSON

My first thought was, where is Mwanza Tanzania, East Africa?

My second thought was that if I didn't know, I was sure there weren't very many people who knew either and that creates a problem for William I. Johnson who is the founder and executive director of the Sawil Pax Upendo Academy Children's Centre of Tanzania there. He is yet another selfless individual whose heart reaches out to these disadvantaged children and serves them in virtual obscurity. Created in 2014, his vision is to provide care, love and free quality education to vulnerable children between ages three and six. He is also providing health care and nutritional benefits to them as well. He is reaching into the community to help rural families to become self supporting.

Here is William's story in his own words; There is still a great predominance of traditions and cultures practices in the mode of life of residents which affects the dignity, respect and development of women and children, mostly girls, compared to women and children living in urban areas where there is mixture of cultures, residents and a high rate of educated families.

Education is not necessarily given to children as a priority but just a privilege. Girls and less fortunate children in this area face considerable challenges in getting access to education.

We really want to help all the kids in rural areas to have access to education. Our activities and programs will benefit more of the less fortunate children because they are proven to be in high risk areas lacking education from the early ages due to socioeconomic and cultural challenges they face daily in the society. This makes both, their development and futures, in jeopardy.

The less fortunate rural children that we target in our activities are those abandoned by their parents due to poverty. Children abused due to their HIV/AIDS, albinism or disabilities status; children born to teenaged girls who got pregnant while they were in school and were expelled. Their male partners had refused to take parental responsibility of their children and lastly, children who are HIV/AIDS orphaned and other apparent vulnerable children in the community.

Our Centre strives to create a bright future for these children, enable them to help themselves, their communities and rescue them from the risk of joining the troubled streets to become obstinate to the community, nation and the world in the future.

These children must be protected from any abuse, cared for and given equal opportunities for a bright future.

Empowering these kids by giving them a free quality education, nutrition and health services remain our focus to insure they live a decent life regardless of their socioeconomic and cultural challenges.

2. To raise awareness for their projects by sharing their stories and projects with the world. Hopefully this will encourage fund raising efforts and support.

3. To draw corporate sponsorship to our program for mutual benefit. Corporate PR can be enhanced by their association. Funding for this program will be used as prizes to the winners of the award. Additional funding will support the projects throughout the world that meet criteria we believe is critical.

4. To develop an alliance among individuals to share ideas, challenges, "how to" support and stories of progress. To be there for each other in good times and bad. We are no longer alone.

5. To provide independent credibility to individuals leading projects for their further development.

6. To give you a platform and a forum for your ideas and thoughts. What you have learned, you can share.

7. To provide transparency for NGOs so that donors and sponsors understand that each partner is fully vetted and contribution can be sent with confidence.

8. To melt the indifference and apathy in the world that enables suffering in 3rd world countries to continue.

9. To present nominated NGO leaders with a humanitarian award for their selfless service toward the disadvantaged, under-served and destitute.

10. To ultimately alleviate the desperation, the destitution and suffering that countless thousands endure which we encounter each day and restore human dignity, compassion in action and well being for everyone.

Changes for New Hope is a registered NGO, non-profit organization with the Peruvian government since 2010. Our focus is to help children living in destitution and inadequacies in the Andean region.

This magazine is expanding that focus to partner with other NGOs and their leaders around the world.

The project creator is Jim Killon, an American born humanitarian, author/writer, exhibited artist, and life enhancement speaker.
