WELCOME!

GET TO KNOW MANUEL ANTONIO

At the end of the first millennium, a subset of the Boruca people left Colombia and went north. They were known as the Quepoa Indians. They settled the Caribbean islands off the coast of Panama, a large portion of south central Costa Rica, and made Manuel Antonio their winter residence. Palenques, or circular cane-and-thatch homes, made up the settlement.

While Spanish conquistadors from Mexico and Panama advanced in two waves between 1519 and 1523 to capture most of Central America, Costa Rica remained mostly unconquered until 1560.

The first Spanish explorer to visit this shore, Ponce de Leon, was scared off by the Quepoa in 1519 when he suggested landing during their sacred season of harvesting turtle eggs. However, the Quepoa welcomed Juan Vasquez de Coronado when he came in 1563 as long as he helped them recover hostages abducted by a tribe further down the coast. Coronado assaulted the adjoining settlement and set the Quepoa prisoners free in one of his most difficult engagements.

Pirates, including Henry Morgan, Francis Drake, and William Dampier, were the first Europeans to find Manuel Antonio. Legend has it that somewhere in the lands originally inhabited by the Quepoa tribe, there lies a trove of hidden riches. The infamous English privateer John Clipperton thought that more than 700 tons of gold, silver, pearls, emeralds, and other precious stones were stashed away close to the Mission of San Bernardino de Quepo. Clipperton began his long and renowned career on the South Seas in the late 1600s. It might have been the looted treasure from Panama, where all the gold and gems from North and South America were sent before being dispatched on shipments to Spain. A galleon and two other huge ships that were “carrying an enormous weight of treasure that caused the ships to sit low in the water” managed to escape when Henry Morgan

2

assaulted the wealthy Port of Panama in 1671.

Clipperton reasoned that in order to prevent a raid at sea, the treasure ships would have needed to be promptly unloaded. Where else except the Mission of San Bernardino de Quepos makes sense. Take a peek at the monkeys in the trees the next time you put on your hiking sandals and go for a walk in the forest. Does that kapok tree have an emerald buried in it?

Mission Juan de Pizzaro, who had been sent by the King of Spain to supervise the settlement of Central America and Costa Rica in particular, created and ruled San Bernardino de Quepos for ten years. Nearly 200 years before California’s first mission, San Bernardino de Quepos, a Franciscan mission, was founded in the Puerto Escondido region. The first orange and other citrus plants were brought to the Naranjo River valley during this voyage. It remained in operation until 1716.

The sixth canton in the area and the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park, Quepos is now the capital of the canton of Aguirre. With hotels, stores, libraries, environmental organizations, yoga, pilates, restaurants, and a wide range of recreational activities, it has a little bit of everything. Meanwhile, its new marina preserves its status as a recognized hub for sport fishing.

Welcome to Quepos and Manuel Antonio then, whether you’re an adventurer, a beach bum, or even a pirate, as here is your new uncharted territory.

The Port of Quepos, once a major exporting port, was mostly unnoticed until the late 19th century when banana production led to its prominence. The United Fruit Company operated the port from 1930 to the late 1940s, employing people from Central America. However, the Panama Disease destroyed banana crops, leading the company to focus on less profitable African oil palms, causing the area to collapse and the port to become obscurity.

It was never easy to go to Manuel Antonio or Quepos. Access to Quepos was limited until well into the middle of the 20th century by an inadequate and convoluted network of roads, a railroad spur from Parrita, or a tiny plane operated by the Alpha Company that actually landed on the beach, but only during low tide. Nevertheless, in the 1960s, American surfers, hippies, and fishermen started returning to Quepos and Manuel Antonio, and by the end of the 1980s, Sansa Airlines was operating regular flights to the region. With its ancient western-style houses, dirt roads, and immaculate beaches, Quepos won over Americans. Quepos and Manuel Antonio started to establish a reputation as a center for adventure tourism.
