isitors who come by boat undoubtedly get the best views of Gig Harbor, but if you’re not into boating, you have a different option for kicking it up a notch. Gig Harbor also is a popular destination for those who visit the region by plane, thanks to the Tacoma Narrows Airport. In addition to attracting pilots with its scenic location and prompt service, the airport is home to Pavco Flight Center, which offers charter and scenic flights. You can tour Mount Rainier and other vistas by air and even customize your own route. Stratos Jet Charter Services is another option for getting around in style. The company tailors travel arrangements to individual needs and has access to any type of charter or jet plane. Stratos is known for accommodating last-minute requests — you can be up in the air in your private jet in as few as four hours. Pavco Flight Center and Executive Terminals provide full-service aviation services at the airport. Fuel and concierge, aircraft rental and maintenance, passenger lounge, car rental and other conveniences are available for travelers. The Tacoma Narrows Airport is operated by Pierce County, which purchased the facility in 2008. A general aviation airport situated on 644 acres, it prides itself in being a relaxed alternative to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and that makes it a preferred choice for celebrities, executives and aviation enthusiasts alike. Reflections at the Airport is the newest addition at Tacoma Narrows Airport. The family-friendly diner opened in fall 2011 with a comprehensive menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant keeps things lively with happy hour, Sunday brunch buffet, four-course wine tastings and live music Friday through Sunday. Patrons can enjoy the view of aircraft takeoffs and landings along with made-from-scratch cuisine. On July 1, the airport will host the second annual Tacoma Freedom Fair Wings & Wheels. The event will bring an air show, fireworks, kids activities, food booths, car show, beer garden and other fun, including rides by a World War II B-17 Flying Fortress.

ig Harbor is an enticing shopping destination that has a blend of locally owned and national stores that cater to all lifestyles and budgets. Each area of the peninsula has its own unique combination of boutiques, specialty shops and department stores.
Historic Downtown Gig Harbor’s oldest commercial area, the downtown waterfront, remains a major shopping attraction. A variety of quaint shops are sprinkled along the bay, from one end of the harbor to the other. Several art galleries, women’s boutiques and gift shops offer hours of browsing, and if you get tired, you’ll find plenty of restaurants and cafés mixed in — from Java & Clay for a latte, Kelly’s Café for American fare, to Brix 25 and Green Turtle for fine-dining experiences. The Gig Harbor Fly Shop, Heidi’s Sweet Shop, Wild Birds Unlimited, Kit Kuhn — A Jeweler Designed for You and Daddy O’s Skate Shop are among the many specialty shops. Don’t miss Misty Meadows Antiques within a quick dash west of downtown. On the north end of the harbor, Finholm District adds to the mix with a family-owned grocery store, more shops and restaurants, including Anthony’s.
Kimball District Located just five minutes from downtown, the Kimball District is a must-stop for scrapbookers, runners, bicyclists and snowboarders who can get a little shopping done while they indulge in their hobbies. You’ll also find fine and costume jewelry at Clark’s Jewelers, home décor at Plush Home Furniture and all things gardening at Wilco. While you browse through the area, stop in for an espresso or a refreshing Yoguccino shake at the cozy Kimball Espresso Café, a popular coffee shop that doubles as an art gallery. Several fast food restaurants are

located on Kimball Drive, along with several diners that offer ethnic cuisine, including Kinza Teriyaki and Gateway to India.
West Side Gig Harbor’s fastest-growing commercial district, the West Side mixes the old and the
new. Uptown Gig Harbor, an eclectic shopping center with an urban flair, is a familyfriendly destination where you’ll find several apparel boutiques, an independent toy shop, gift and décor stores and several equally tempting dining options, such as Blazing Onion, Pizzeria Fondi and Green.House. Point for a cup of espresso, or the quirky Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop. If you need a little break from shopping, check out the movie listings at the state-of-the-art Galaxy Theater. During the summer, Uptown hosts the Saturday farmers market, and there are various other events throughout the year. Uptown’s neighbor, the Safeway Shopping Center, is a recent addition to the West Side and is slated to accommodate even more retail stores. Other establishments on this side of town include the Olympic Village shopping center, the Harbor Greens organic grocery store, Morford’s Hallmark, a longtime icon, and The Wine Studio, a charming wine shop and tasting room.
Rosedale Mostly a residential area, the Rosedale neighborhood is a destination worth exploring. Take the scenic drive through the quiet countryside and bucolic farmlands, and enjoy a little shopping at the gorgeously landscaped Rosedale Gardens and at the Raft Island Roses nursery. The Rosedale Market, which has been part of the neighborhood since the 1940s, sells a little bit of everything, including espresso and deli foods. The market is famous locally for its brush with Hollywood a few years ago (known as Templeton’s back then) — it was in a scene, albeit quick one, in the movie “Enough,” starring Jennifer Lopez. Another fun stop in Rosedale is Chalet in the Woods, a Scandinavian-style chalet filled with European gifts and clothing and surrounded by several acres of beautiful gardens and woodlands.

A busy commercial district that continues to grow, Gig Harbor North is home to many national retailers, from Costco and Target to Pier 1 and Big 5 Sporting Goods. Pet supplies, home improvement, wine and spirits are among the categories covered in this district. Gig Harbor North’s convenient location and variety of staple stores make it an attraction for someone looking to cover all bases in one trip. It’s also a budding casual dining area, with choices that range from an alwaysbustling Starbucks coffee shop to one of the locals’ favorite spots, Blue Cannon Pizza.
Purdy and Key Peninsula As you’re exploring the area, wrap up your treasure hunting on the Key Peninsula. Purdy, located en route, is where you’ll find fresh, in-season produce at the busy Local Boys market, an eclectic mix of knickknacks and gifts at Country Expressions, 2 4 < W W W. and several dining choices, including the Floatation Device, a popular hangout, and Massimo Italian Bar & Grill, which offers great dining with a waterfront view. As you travel north on state Route 302 and onto the Key Peninsula Highway, you’ll find several fun stops along the way. CostLess Pharmacy, despite its name, has a lot more to offer, including local souvenirs and unique gifts. Sunnycrest Nursery and Blue Willow Lavender Farms also will delight you with unique gifts. And if you get hungry, you’ll find a few good choices located right off the main highway, from The Gourmet Burger Shop for mouth-watering burgers, to Lulu’s for comfort food.

‘Meet Me At The Tides.’ The Tides Tavern is a historic downtown icon and all-occasions adult destination

T
he name of Tides Tavern is nearly synonymous with Gig Harbor. It’s rare to meet a local or visitor who hasn’t heard about the popular destination, which has been a downtown icon for nearly four decades. If the designation of “tavern” conjures an image where locals like to hang out, then Tides fits the bill. It’s a great place to get a feel for the town and catch up on local news. But the Tides is also much more. It attracts an eclectic mix of patrons that ranges from boaters and newlyweds to businessmen and prominent community leaders — which means, on any given day, you’ll see people wearing everything from cutoffs to suits, and everyone looks equally comfortable. The unassuming décor is part of a friendly atmosphere that’s complemented by prompt service. Despite the constant hum of conversation and a frequent full house, the Tides manages to create an intimate setting in
which patrons can carry on a business lunch conversation or enjoy a small party. The food is the main attraction, including the two bestsellers, the fish and chips and the clam chowder. The fish and chips, proclaimed the best on the coast by Coastal Living magazine, are made from an originalrecipe ale-beer batter and have been a staple for years. Other popular choices include burgers and pizzas, but even the pickiest vegetarian will find several mouth-watering choices. In addition to the staples, there’s a rotat-
ing menu that changes four times a year to take advantage of seasonal bounty. Some of the ingredients are sourced locally, including an optional organic beef, added last year from Gig Harbor-raised, grass-fed cattle. Chef Ernie Davis is especially passionate about fresh fish, and he has his own smoker out back for adding extra flavor to some of the seafood. “Chef Ernie is always trying to find the best of what’s available, and find the best sources,” says Dylan Stanley, who recently became the company CEO. A breakfast on the weekends (9 to 11 a.m.) is a popular addition, and on occasion, you’ll catch live music or a benefit event throughout the week. A city-owned adjacent parking lot recently was paved and expanded, providing much-needed and easy parking. The Tides is located in one of downtown’s oldest buildings, which started out as a mercantile built by town pioneer Axel Uddenberg. It was adjacent to the only public W W W. one to purchase one of the many styles of branded apparel and send in photos of them wearing it in different corners of the world. Through the years, photos have been taken under water by a scuba diver, on Saddam Hussein’s throne by a U.S. soldier, and at the South Pole, among other places. A world map on the company’s website is dotted with those destinations, showing proud fans who donned T-shirts or sweatshirts at the equator, in front of a pyramid in Egypt and by a sunken World War II ship off the coast of Guam. “The Tides is an icon,” Mackenzie said. “I didn’t realize how much of an icon it was until I started working here. The deck is so popular during the summer that many regulars prefer to wait a good amount of time just to get a spot and enjoy the beautiful scenery that includes sailboats coming in and out of the harbor. Make sure to wear sunscreen as you linger on the deck on a lazy summer day, but don’t worry if you forget it, because staff keep it on hand for guests. ferry dock landing at the time — and since it was the pre-automobile era, the business was a popular destination back in those days as well. The tavern was added in the 1930s, possibly as a celebration of the end of Prohibition. It sold beer for 20 cents a bottle. For about four decades, the tavern exchanged hands several times. When Peter Stanley acquired it in June 1973, a new era began. An extensive remodel and the addition of food were two major changes that launched a vibrant business, which has remained a downtown mainstay. Stanley is not likely to retire any time soon, but his children, Mackenzie and Dylan, are now second-generation entrepreneurs who are helping to carry on the tradition. The siblings recalled growing up around Gig Harbor and hanging out outside of the tavern, which is restricted to those 21 and older. “They passed food to me through a window,” Dylan Stanley said. “We have good memories of hanging out on the deck.” “The staff has fun together, and that exudes to the customer,” Mackenzie Stanley added. “We enjoy being here, and we make sure customers have fun. ... The Tides is about creating a place where people can enjoy themselves, meet their friends and have fun.” Patrons take their love for Tides seriously. A tradition dating back decades invites any-

eryone is very friendly.” The employee list includes four sets of sisters, two sets of sisters-in-law (some of whom are related to the sister sets) and two mother-son teams. Furman’s sister, too, works at the Float. Furman is known for his generosity. Not only has the business contributed thousands of dollars to local schools and sports teams, he also regularly takes customers on his “bus” to the Puyallup Fair or Tacoma Rainiers games. And when there’s a major game at Peninsula High School across the street, he offers his lot for parking, then shuttles people up to the school. With such a welcoming atmosphere, it’s no surprise the Floatation Device is a popular place for get-togethers. One or two parties are scheduled on the average week, from birthdays to reunions. The restaurant doesn’t charge for using the space, and it can accommodate about 80-100 people in one of two rooms. Partygoers can decorate for the occasion to their hearts’ content. “We try to accommodate anything possible. We don’t like to say no,” Furman says. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, there are other types of party-

“If you leave here hungry, then something is wrong,” he says. That may explain why Tuesday nights are packed. The “Tightwad Tuesday” special — two Float burgers and fries for $10 — has been offered at the same price since it was added to the menu two years ago, despite an increase in costs. For Furman, the restaurant is not just about making money: As long as customers are happy and business is steady, he says he’s content. Tuesdays are not the only busy days. The clam chowder, previously served on Fridays, was so popular that it’s now offered Friday through Sunday, in part because elderly customers didn’t like driving on Fridays when roads are busier. The clam chowder, too, has a steady following. Furman says some customers come from as far as Graham and Poulsbo every week just for that. Since Furman took over ownership six years ago this July, the menu has been expanded to include more vegetarian options, steaks and sandwiches. Another addition was an “advanced citizens” menu (for those ages 60 and older). The menu, however, is not the only attraction. The restaurant is like a big extended family for the staff — literally in many cases — and that doesn’t escape the patrons. “Everybody who works here is local and lives within a few miles,” Furman says. “Ev-
ing. Thursdays and Fridays bring karaoke nights, and on Saturdays, local bands provide entertainment on a rotating schedule — Rock ’n’ Roll and classic rock along with some country and blues. The Float is also home to trivia leagues that compete online with teams around the world. Soon, even fourlegged customers will be welcome, sort of. The restaurant is in the process of fencing part of the grass and turning it into a “dog park” so dogs can hang out outside while their owners dine. The Float attracts a diverse range of customers, from submarine engineers and landscapers to retired teachers. Furman says the best compliment he’s received, on more than one occasion, is from people who make Floatation Device their standby choice any time they want to eat out.

Children get their own titles for screening at the Kids Fest, and budding filmmakers can test their talents under pressure in the 72-hour competition. Since no film festival would be complete without celebrities, the Gig Harbor event is no exception. Although the stars’ names are kept under wraps until closer to the event, the bar has been set high — last year, Julie Andrews graced Gig Harbor with her presence. MARITIME GIG The fun starts on Saturday morning the first weekend of June with the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, followed by the ever-popular Maritime Gig Family Fun Run. Runners and walkers will gather for the start at 3125 Judson St. in front of the Visitor Center/Chamber of Commerce offices. The race route follows Harborview Drive and back to the Visitor Center. As the runners head toward the finish line, participants in the Grand Parade will be staging and preparing for the firing of the cannon to start the parade festivities at 10 a.m. sharp. You won’t want to miss the excitement of the Pirates of the Peninsula Yo Ho Grand Parade, traditionally one of the local favorite events throughout the year. Then be sure to bring all the kids and grandkids to the Children’s Fair from noon to 5 p.m., when they can enjoy hands-on events and activities such as T-shirt painting, interactive art projects, bouncing on a pirate ship and much more. For the third year, adults parched from the warmth of a sunny day can enjoy a cold
beer or glass of wine in the beer garden located in the parking lot of The Maritime Inn, just steps from the main festival. Music is a main part of the Maritime Gig, starting both Saturday and Sunday at noon. Local favorite Soulstice (Fleetwood Mac tribute band) starts it off this year, and The Shy Boys (voted South Sound Magazine’s Best Band of 2011) hit the stage for one of the summer’s annual highlights from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, enjoy the annual Blessing of the Fleet among many other activities. “The Blessing,” as locals call it, is an annual ceremony which celebrates Gig Harbor’s rich heritage of commercial fishing. HARBOR HOUNDS Pups and people make the trek to Gig Harbor each September for the annual Harbor Hounds Walk the Town event. A vibrant arts community fills the calendar with events all year long, from theater productions and symphony performances to art walks and hands-on artistic pursuits.
Outdoor summer concerts Summer Sounds at Skansie, celebrating its 10th anniversary, is downtown’s signature summer event series. Every Tuesday evening from June 26 through Aug. 28, Skansie Brothers Park is packed with lawn chairs for the popular, free attraction. The 2012 lineup includes several returning and local favorites that include The Coats, Perry Acker band and Pearl Django. Not to be outdone, the Uptown Gig Harbor shopping center kicks up the heat on Thursday evenings in July and August. The Shy Boys, Common Ground and Michael Anthony Pratt are among this summer’s acts.

Artistic flair A vibrant arts community makes Gig Harbor a magnet both for artists and art patrons. A collection of art galleries downtown cater to all tastes and budgets, and an art walk every first Saturday of the month gives you a chance to meet some of the artists. Local arts organization Peninsula Art League coordinates a juried art show at the Gig Harbor Civic Center (Aug. 9 through Sept. 13 this year), a popular Gig Harbor Arts Festival (July 21-22), as well as member shows around town and rotating art exhibits at Kimball Espresso Café. On the Key Peninsula, Two Water Arts Alliance is known for its Spring Fling, an artsy affair that doubles as a fundraiser for its programs. Every fall, the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula areas become a destination for art lovers, who can take a scenic drive around the area and stop at various studios during the two-day, free Open Studio Tour. The self-guided tour Sept. 15-16 includes demonstrations and a peek at the magic behind the artists’ work, as well as an opportunity to buy incredible art — directly from the creators.
Art walk Historic downtown Gig Harbor is home to a lovely collection of art galleries, most of which highlight a variety of Gig Harbor and Pacific Northwest artists. The first Saturday of every month, the Gig Harbor Art Walk takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunset Magazine dubbed it “one of the five best small town art walks in the Northwest.” Pick up an Art Walk map at a gallery or our Visitor Information Center, located at 3125 Judson St., and make your way around to the galleries, all within easy walking distance. Each month, the galleries feature different artists, and many serve refreshments. The heritage of Gig Harbor defines who we are

ommercial fishing may no longer be Gig Harbor’s main industry, but the community has maintained pride in its roots. A walk through downtown gives a glimpse into the rich maritime history of the area, thanks to efforts to preserve both the city’s historic heritage and the small-town atmosphere. The waterfront today remains the home of a busy commercial fishing fleet, and during the offseason, visitors may catch a view of fishermen getting ready for their next adventure on the seas. But there are year-round opportunities for history buffs as well, including self-guided tours to view historic buildings, such as net sheds, interpretive markers with information about landmarks and history, as well as activities at the Harbor History Museum and Eddon Boatyard, both located downtown. HISTORIC MARKERS About five dozen historic markers are scattered around the Gig Harbor Peninsula — as far as Fox Island and Key Peninsula — and they provide information about historic locations and buildings, as well as about environmental points of interest. FISHING NET SHEDS Gig Harbor’s commercial fishing history began with immigrants from Croatia and Scandinavia at the turn of the 20th century. The pioneer families established a tradition that has

lasted for many new generations. The waterfront was bustling with activity at its modest docks and net sheds — covered sheds built on wood pilings. The net sheds provided a storage area for nets and gear along with an easy way to transfer them to the boats. Today, 17 historic net sheds remain, making Gig Harbor the area with the largest inventory in Puget Sound. Some of them continue to be an integral part of the working waterfront. The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation listed Gig Harbor’s commercial fishing net sheds on its 2008 list of most endangered historic properties. Boaters get the best view of these interesting structures, but there are many viewpoints from the land as well. The net shed located at the Skansie Brothers Park is the only one that that’s publicly owned, and it’s currently being restored by the City of Gig Harbor. The century-old building will
be available for tours and programming once preservation efforts are complete in 2012. Besides the park, a good vantage point from land is off Stinson Avenue, where you can get a good view of the Tarabochia, Bujacich and Lovrovich, all working net sheds. In the upstairs loft, visitors can see a partially lofted Thunderbird, the first step to building a brand new Thunderbird. T-Bird No. 2, scheduled for a May 2012 launch, and T-Bird No. 11 are being restored in the boatbuilding shop. The jointer shop that was historically used for smaller projects serves as the entry into the boatyard and is heated with a huge woodstove. Stop by for a cup of coffee. The BoatShop hosts a variety of classes, from knot tying to basic navigation, but where you can really get into the action is the Boatbuilder for a Day program. Every Saturday through mid-September 2012, you can help build a 15-foot Lake George rowing boat alongside professional boatbuilder Tom Regan. Students can work on specific areas of interest, such as planking or finish work, depending on the schedule.
GIG HARBOR BOATSHOP Boat building is another major part of the maritime history of Gig Harbor, which was the birthplace of the Thunderbird sailboat. The Eddon Boatyard, where local boatbuilder Ed Hoppen experimented to create the Thunderbird, is now home to the nonprofit Gig Harbor BoatShop, as well as the Thunderbird Sailboat No. 2. HARBOR HISTORY MUSEUM The Harbor History Museum, which moved to its current building in 2009, serves as a cultural and community center that preserves and showcases the history of the area and the region. Although the museum features a broad spectrum of themes, maritime history plays a prominent role. The first Thunderbird hull and the 65-foot fishing vessel Shenandoah are displayed in the museum’s Jim and Carolyn Milguard Maritime Gallery. The Shenandoah is undergoing restoration through 2013, and on weekends you can see shipwright Nate Slater hard at work — and join him, too. Volunteers can drop in for a few hours to help with the restoration of the purse seiner, which was built in 1925 right in Gig Harbor, at the Skansie Ship Building Co. The museum’s permanent exhibit includes a photo collection of the old ferries and steamboats, a video about the commercial fishing history that you can watch in the theater, and for the kids, there’s a giant magnet wall with hands-on, beachthemed play. ross the Purdy Bridge at the edge of Gig Harbor and soon you may feel like you’re driving in the middle of nowhere — but give the Key Peninsula a chance, and you’ll appreciate its unique character. Time has not touched the idyllic rural setting of the Key, as the locals call it.

Key Peninsula is the answer when the road calls for a swift getaway from the hum of city life. Once you get there, you’ll be tempted to hide the watch and all the electronic gadgets so you can take in all the leisurely rhythms of country life. You’ll also be pleasantly surprised to find a vibrant community that loves to put together a party or two and has several annual traditions, including a community fair. RECREATION Two state parks, Joemma Beach and Penrose Point, have waterfront access and cover a range of recreational possibilities, including kayaking, hiking, saltwater fishing and birdwatching. Views of Mount Rainier from Penrose Point and the Olympic Mountains from Joemma Beach create a majestic setting, and both state parks are open for overnight camping. (Note that the state of Washington now requires a Discover Pass for all vehicle access to state parks.) Maple Hollow, another waterfront park, boasts 1,400 feet of secluded beachfront and is accessible both by land and kayak. At Volunteer Park, you’ll find a vibrant hub for local adult and youth sports, along with a popular skateboard park. The Key Peninsula Civic Center, the site of many local events, offers access to outdoor tennis courts and a newly installed children’s playground. The center also is home to the Key Peninsula History Museum, where volunteer docents are eager to share interesting facts about the community. FOOD AND SHOPPING The Key Peninsula has a descent number of dining choices, so don’t worry if you didn’t pack a picnic. Excellent Mexican food and atmosphere are the signature at El Sombrero, and if your taste buds prefer American, homey fare, try Lulu’s or The Roadhouse instead. But if you love hamburgers, many argue that the newest kid on the block, The Gourmet Burger Shop, has the best burgers around. Make a stop at Ravensara as you drive 4 2 < W W W. on state Route 302 not only for a cup of organic java but also for a treat from Two Clouds Bakery (the brioche bread and the scones are to die for but face stiff competition from the muffins and peanut butter cookies). Several farms are open to visitors during the season. They sell local produce and food, including eggs and honey. You can also tour many of these farms at a special farm tour event on the first Saturday of October. Take home a Key Pen souvenir and stock up on necessities at CostLess Pharmacy, or find a unique gift made by local artists at Sunnycrest Nursery, or do a little treasure hunting at Angel Guild Thrift Store. Oenophiles would be amiss if they don’t drop in at the Trillium Creek Winery, where French-born winemaker Claude Gahard and his wife, Claudia, are happy to give visitors a tour of the vineyards and a taste of their lowsulfite wines. And be sure not to miss a visit to Blend Wine Shop in Key Center. CELEBRATIONS AND THINGS TO DO The Key Peninsula is known for its community spirit where neighbor helps neighbor — and locals don’t turn down the chance for a party, either. Annual celebrations include a livable
community fair in May, a logging show at Old Timers Day in August and Key Fest, a community fair complete with a carnival and parade. For the 10th anniversary of the fair this July, there will even be fireworks and other surprises. The Longbranch Improvement Club, a unique building that’s on the National Historic Register, is a common venue for concerts and dances, along with the Key Peninsula Civic Center. The LIC’s annual traditions include Labor Day and Memorial Day dances. If you’re visiting in August, check the schedule for outdoor movies hosted by Key Pen Parks (www.keypenparks.com), and in the spring, dress up for the artsy Spring Fling affair organized by Two Waters Arts Alliance. Key Center is as close to “downtown” as you’ll be on the Key, and it’s a good destination if you miss nightlife during your visit. O’Callahan’s Pub gets rocked by live bands and special events, including DJ music every week, and Blend Wine Shop showcases local talent at poetry nights and open mics. Go ahead and linger on the Key. The locals understand the desire to hang on to the quiet pace. You’ll be back to civilization soon enough, but don’t be surprised if you feel the urge to return to the “middle of nowhere,” preferably sometime very soon.

“This is one of the best accessible areas in the Sound because we have a lot of parks and public beaches,” says Blake Merwin, owner of Gig Harbor Fly Shop, which sells fishing gear as well as offers classes and guided fishing trips. “We also have a lot of lakes in the area and the state stocks some of them with trout.” Merwin says there are many advantages to hiring fishing guides because they know the best local spots and can offer various tips. Depending on the time of year and the species of fish, you may not even have to go far — some of the trips are right on the beaches of Gig Harbor. New at the shop this year are guided flyfishing trips on kayaks. These single-person, pedal-powered kayaks are designed for fishing and use a propeller. “In the Sound, we like fishing when the tide is moving, and with the kayaks you can stay in place or move when you pedal and still continue to fish,” he says. The kayaks will also be available for sale and for rent, and the shop will offer deliveries to several local spots. The main species found off the local beaches and from fishing kayaks are cutthroat trout, but once in a while lucky anglers will catch a salmon. “That’s always a nice surprise when you hook into one of those,” Merwin says. The guided trips can be arranged for one person, but trips for two to three people offer better deals. And those who prefer to discover fishing on their own can take advantage of classes instead. The Gig Harbor Fly Shop has an extensive list of introductory, intermediate and advance classes that combine a little classroom experience with getting up close and personal with the fish. The beach classes, at $99 per person, are
especially popular. “The beach class is focused on teaching people how to fish locally on Gig Harbor beaches. We give anglers all the information and tools to be able to go out on their own,” Merwin says. During the winter season, anglers can come into the shop to take fly-tying classes instead. The classes range from teaching basic fly tying to specialized flies for different species (check the website, www.gigharborflyshop.com, for a complete schedule of classes). If you prefer lake fishing, Gig Harbor’s Sweetwater Angling & Guide Co. knows the best spots. Co-owner and local grad Gus Garcia says most of the guided lake trips are within a 45-minute drive from Gig Harbor. The company also specializes in trips to local beaches and streams, as well as several major rivers around the state. Garcia says the average local trip takes four to six hours and the main species are steelhead, salmon and trout, depending on the season. The guides provide everything the anglers need for the experience trip, including gear as needed, boat or raft, even snacks and transportation (www.sweetwaterangling.com for a list of all locations and options). “You can just focus your time and effort on enjoying yourself,” he says. In addition, the company has a licensed saltwater captain and sightseeing can be incorporated into the trips. Vacationing couples are frequent customers at Sweetwater Angling and Garcia notes that women are the fastest-growing demographic in the industry. “We have so many opportunities to do different types of things,” he says. “It all depends on your interest.” Learn more at www.sweetwaterangling.com
NOT INTO FISHING? STAND UP AND PADDLE! Stand-up paddle, a.k.a. SUP, is one of the newest and fastest-growing watersports. It requires no experience, but it can be physically challenging because it uses the body’s core to “surf.” The SUP is a large surfboard-like board that you stand on, and you use a paddle to propel it. The sport, which is believed to have been born in ancient times, was popular in Hawaii years ago and has been revived in recent years. Lee Murray, owner of Lee’s SUP located near the Jerisich Dock downtown, says stand-up paddleboarding is a very easy sport. “Gig Harbor is a great place for it,” he says. He rents SUPs at $25 for two hours, and surfers can launch them straight into the water from his location. The shop is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Thursday from May 1 to mid-September, and on the weekends during the winter season.On Saturdays when the wind, tide and weather are generally good, paddlers can drop by the business at 9:30 a.m. and join in with an adventure-paddling group that explores together. n the past few years, Gig Harbor has become a popular destination for runners. The local running community has embraced a variety of races year-round including a half-marathon. Many formal and informal running groups are active in the area, and a specialty footware store, Route 16, is a mecca for runners and walkers, thanks to its very knowledgeable staff and selection of gear. Miguel Galeana, owner of Route 16 Running & Walking, says when he first opened his shop in Gig Harbor, there were fewer than half-dozen races. Now, some avid run-

ners see this area as a growing mecca for the sport. “This is one of the most active communities when it comes to physical fitness,” he
says. “Somebody started a culture here, and it continues to grow.” Some of the more popular running trails are at McCormick Forest Park, Sehmel Homestead Park and the 360 Park (on the Key Peninsula); the Cushman Trail is a top choice for those who prefer paved surfaces. But runners can also be frequently be spotted downtown, taking advantage of the scenery and low traffic. From the Maritime Gig Run in June and the Turkey Trot in November, to the Run for Burma in March, Gig Harbor is a magnet for runners who love a little competition mixed in with quaint atmosphere. Many of the local races serve as fundraisers for various causes and receive overwhelming support. Leslie Mayne, founder of Race for a Soldier half marathon, says the entire community wrapped its arms around the race, which is now in its second year. More than 350 volunteers came out in force for the inaugural event to make sure the runners — about 1,400 registered — had plenty of water stations, cheers from the sidelines and other support. The race, which also includes a 2-mile run and a kids’ fun run, raised $44,000 in its first year for several organizations that offer therapeutic programs and other services to soldiers and combat veterans. Mayne lost her son in 2009 to a drug overdose following severe post-traumatic stress issues related to his tour in Iraq. She started running as a way of coping. “Running allowed me to process my thoughts and it was good therapy. So I started thinking how I can help soldiers,” she says. “(The event) has a lot to do with my passion to help soldiers reclaim their lives.” The race is designed both for experienced runners and those trying a half marathon for the first time, while new runners will find just the right amount of challenge on the two-mile course (Sept. 23; www.raceforasoldier.org). “September in Gig Harbor is beautiful,” Mayne said. “It’s a great time of the year, and it’s a beautiful run.”
Bicycling and bike rides Gig Harbor has a good network of bicycle-friendly paths that includes paved lanes, shared-use trails and bicycle lanes. The relatively low traffic, the scenery and the mix of easy and challenging roads make this an attractive area for bikers. Stop by Old Town Bicycle on Kimball Drive for maps, gear and minor repairs, or make an appointment if your bike needs more extensive work. If you love the idea of scenic “touring”
on your bike, check out the annual Ride Around Puget Sound (RAPSody) event in August. The two-day, 85-mile experience includes riding over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and through Gig Harbor; participants may also opt for one day instead. Another organized ride through the area is The Peninsula Metric in June, and if you’re looking for serious competition, check out the Gig Harbor Circuit Race that is part of the Lake Washington Velo Circuit Race Series. 10301 Bujacich Rd NW, north of prison 122 acres. Has abundant wildlife with over four miles of trails of varying ease and difficulty for walkers, runners, cyclists, and horses. Trails wander through old growth forest and offer views down into the McCormick Creek canyon. There is also a meadow with picnic tables 100 yards from the entrance.

20 acres in 10 parcels, Wollochet Dr & Artondale Dr NW Undeveloped but includes 854 linear feet of shoreline between the confluence of Artondale and Wollochet Creeks with the saltwater marsh and estuary area of Wollochet Bay.

34 acres, 1502 Lucille Pkwy NW Offers over 1000 feet of Tacoma Narrows shoreline access, excellent fishing and views of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Entrance sign leads down a paved road taking visitors inside the park and its partially landscaped grounds. A paved path winds toward a gazebo and the sandy-rock beach. Two telescopes provide beach and bridge buffs alike an up-close view of the bridge.
3507 Ray Nash Dr. NW & 36th St 3.6 acres includes a rustic 1938 CCC building and picnic shelter, tennis courts and a small ball field. The site has served as a school and community hall, and is available for meetings, classes and social gatherings.
1453 Ozette Drive, south end of Fox Island 5.5 acres. The picturesque great fishing spot includes a concrete fishing pier accessible via paved pathway and handrails, restroom and picnic area.
82 acres, 10015 Sunrise Beach Dr. NW Includes beach access with over 2,400 feet of waterfront on Colvos Passage, open grass areas, walking trails, is a popular diving destination, and has spectacular views of Puget Sound and Mt. Rainier.
5 miles, 3100 – 14th Ave NW to Burnham Drive Owned by Tacoma Public Utilities and permitted for use to PenMet Parks (2010) and the City of Gig Harbor. Trail heads at 14th Ave, Olympic Drive, Kimball Drive, Grandview Street and 96th Street. The Trail is a 16-foot wide paved asphalt pedestrian route exclusively for nonmotorized uses, with rolling hills, smooth pavement and easy accessibility. Trail is great for kids of all ages south of Olympic; hillier between Grandview and 96th St.

360 Regional Park
SR 302 at 114th St. This 360 acre property located on the north end of the Key Peninsula includes over 3.5 miles of trails accessible to walkers, equestrians, and mountain bikers (non-motorized). The main trial is a 2.5 mile loop that takes about an hour to walk and smaller trails that cut back and forth through the meadow in the middle of the property. There are 6 benches along the main loop, trailhead kiosk with map, and limited parking space at trailhead.

Rocky Creek Conservation Area
SR 302 at 150th Ave. The area covers over 224 acres of park, open space, and conservation land and is managed jointly with Pierce County and Key Pen Parks for enjoyment of existing ecosystems. Rocky Creek has over 3 miles of walking (non-motorized) trails, 2 benches, trailhead kiosk with map, and limited parking space at trailhead. The property consists of wetlands, two streams, and various plants and wildlife.

4411 Van Beek RD KPN Lakebay, WA This 58 acre site offers a circular trail with mid-point access to a stretch of beach along Puget Sound with views of Mount Rainier. This park includes an improved walking trail, picnic area, and walking access to the saltwater below.

Franciscan Health System St. Anthony Hospital, owned by Franciscan, opened in 2009 to bring 24/7 emergency care to the Gig Harbor Peninsula. The state-of-the-art, 80-bed facility has won several awards, including for its high patientsatisfaction scores and its green design. The hospital features a quiet, warm atmosphere enhanced by an array of beautiful, original art, an outdoor healing garden and a popular café that many consider Gig Harbor’s best-kept secret. The Milgard Medical Pavilion, adjacent to the hospital, includes a cancer care center and services that range from chiropractic and physical therapy to dentistry and nephrology. It is also home to the popular Healthy Reflections Medical & Day Spa, which has been voted as “best spa in Gig Harbor.” A regional cancer care center, located at the park, is affiliated with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
