When we saw the films, we were amazed, and we know you will be too. On the weekend of Sept. 4 - 7, teams from all over the Puget Sound region participated in Gig Harbor Film Festival’s Annual 72HR Film Competition. They were given 72 hours to write, shoot, and edit their films before the 6 p.m. deadline on September 7. The films were required to be: PG / under 5 minutes / and contain these three elements: 1. A misunderstanding. 2. A scream. 3. Contain the line: “Gig Harbor is a film friendly community.” 2014 was the competition’s biggest year yet. The Awards Ceremony will feature all of the films created for the 72HR event, with prizes for Acting, Writing, Cinematography, Editing, and end with prizes for the “Best Film” winners in two categories: youth 18 and under and adult 19 and up. This unforgettable evening will be MC’d by Phil Wilson, a local filmmaker, business owner, and current Professor of Digital Filmmaking at Olympic College.

The main component of the restoration project is the removal of both the Glines Canyon and Elwha dams. The dams, erected almost one hundred years ago, flooded Lower Elwha Klallam tribal sites and depleted the Tribe’s sacred salmon stock. The Strong People document both the recovery of the river and the return of the Klallam Tribe. The indigenous Klallam have long had their way of life impeded by the dams’ existence. DIRECTOR ROB UNDERHILL

They got it together. Then they fell apart. A neurotic couple’s obsession with a mysterious puzzle comically unravels their world, disconnecting them from reality and jeopardizing their fragile relationship.

Bragg N East is a gritty, police drama about hopeless lives in inner-city Raleigh, North Carolina-and of the hope-filled vision of a local cop, Robert, whose inspired outreach of love changes the lives of many in that community-especially that of the gang member and drug dealer, Dae’Quan.

“This offbeat comic mystery is a low-key, low-budget charmer. Jigsaw puzzles may not rank too high on the list of typical relationship hazards, but it’s the arrival of just such a puzzle that tests and threatens the bond between the titular characters in “Arlo & Julie,” a low-key, low-budget charmer that marks a pleasing shift into fiction features for writer-director Steve Mims after his 2011 documentary “Incendiary: The Willingham Case.” An offbeat comic mystery that doesn’t overstay its welcome at a spry 76 minutes, this adroit indie vehicle for actors Alex Dobrenko and Ashley Spillers...”

While the story line is fictional, it is inspired by true events and the experiences of Raleigh officer Robert Wagner, whose vision this film promotes and honors.

In June of 2006, the City of L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks granted the Chouinard Foundation, in the spirit of its namesake, an unprecedented partnership to bring free weekend art classes to the inner city of Los Angeles. As funding waned and the program closed, a documentary was created to depict the impact it had on its students.

Dancing With Thoreau is a unique environmental film told from the perspective of a naturalist and organic farmer, focusing on our individual and societal connection/disconnection with nature; what that means to us physically, emotionally and spiritually; and how we as individuals can deepen that connection and reap its many benefits. A primary goal of the film is to inspire people to become more engaged in the wonders of their local environments.

“CURLY” follows Gustavo “CURLY” Fernandez as he flourishes within this free art program and delves into the roots of the Chouinard Foundation, their inspiration and history.

DIRECTOR MAYNARD SEIDER What can residents of communities that have been devastated by deindustrialization do to improve their condition during a time of austerity, war and anti-labor attacks? The film focuses on the introduction of a massive museum of contemporary art in the same buildings that housed Sprague Electric Company in a typical New England mill town. Billed as an engine of economic development, the museum hasn’t produced the jobs it promised and the city’s downtown is semi-deserted. The film argues that national policy must change and that vibrant unions and social movements are needed to bring about a new ‘New Deal’ to deal with the social and economic crisis facing U.S. cities today.

Jessica Crowe is an ambitious business woman working for top advertising agency Garrison, Wyler and Frank. When key partner John Garrison asks her to work on a last minute and career-changing client proposal, she leaps at the opportunity. While working diligently through the night, she finds herself swept into a lonely, empty office building with a hidden camera watching her every move and she quickly finds that meeting her deadline is the least of her worries.

Filmmaker and captain of his own fishing boat, director Elijah Lawson’s short documentary is about the art of fishing for wild salmon. The stark and beautiful landscape of Southwest Alaska hides the fact that Bristol Bay is a dangerous and tricky fishery. Bristol Bay is home to the largest wild salmon run in the planet and is located in Southwest Alaska, north of the Aleutian Islands in the Bering Sea. Along with Director of Photography, Randall Peck, Lawson creates a beautifully evocative tribute to the Bay, a place where hard work and looking out for each other brings all kinds of people together. Director Lawson’s film is a tribute to the place and to the people who live and work there, and to one of the healthiest fisheries in the world.

Archer is enamored with duct tape. Duct tape chairs, posters, shoes, watch...anything that can be duct-taped...he duct tapes. During his morning routine, he often notices a beautiful girl walking down the street below his bedroom window. Each day, he adds a petal to a duct tape rose. While looking at the rose, he realizes that it’s completed and that he must find his dream girl to present her with the symbol of his affection.

His world is suddenly lit up when he spots his beautiful neighbor on the balcony opposite his new room. He tries desperately to be noticed, yet she remains stubbornly oblivious to his infatuation. SLYM is not giving up though — he has one more idea to try. Can he catch her attention and win her heart?

DIRECTOR BOB BALDORI*

DIRECTOR JOHN SLATTERY

Boogie Stomp! is a documentary film that will tell the story of boogie woogie, its origins, subsequent history and ongoing development while profiling its two greatest living players - Bob Seeley and Bob Baldori. Seeley spent his formative years playing with Meade Lux Lewis and other Jazz greats. Though playing in obscurity for decades at Charley’s Crab in Detroit, he became known to insiders as the best boogie and stride player in the world. Fellow Detroiter Bob Baldori has a rich rock history, and has played piano and harmonica with Chuck Berry since 1966. Together, they have teamed up and hit the road to revive America’s forgotten music. Boogie Stomp is a compelling story, riveting performances, fascinating interviews, foot-stomping’ concert and dance clips, tour footage from around the world.

Casablanca Mon Amour is a modern road movie that encapsulates the more complex and fractured nature of living in a world where TV and wars compete for headlines and occupy imaginations. Using movies as a road map between yesterday’s Hollywood and today’s Morocco, Casablanca Mon Amour offers a Moroccan perspective on the long and entwined relationship between Hollywood and The Arab/Muslim World. Casablanca Mon Amour offers more than a dry critique of the impact of media on culture. Instead, the film takes a human and humorous look at the effects Hollywood films have on people’s imaginations and affords Moroccan’s (our movie set ‘extras’)an opportunity to talk back—which they do in intelligent, witty and wildly ingenious ways. Casablanca Mon Amour uses the process of movie making as a way of turning the Great American Story on its head - and offering Hollywood and America a story about itself.

DIRECTOR ART HERBIG* Never Forget examines the ways in which the past the invades and shapes the present. Unquestionably, there are many memories of what happened September 11th, 2001. Beginning with interviews with people who experienced 9/11 as a volunteer at Ground Zero and building to those who experienced the attacks on television throughout the world, this film explores the ways that ‘we’ Never Forget. We live in a world where history seems like an ‘accurate’ depiction of the past. Public Memory challenges that assumption. Through an examination of the role of 9/11 ten years after the attacks, we explore how the relationships between individual memory, memorials, education, history, media, and politics shape our understandings of the past in the present.

DIRECTOR SCOTT SCHAEFER ATTENDING: STEVE EDMISTON* The Maury Island Incident tells the incredible, tragic, and forgotten story of Harold Dahl, who on June 21, 1947, alleged a UFO sighting over Puget Sound, Washington, sparking ‘the summer of the saucers’, the ‘modern era’ of UFO obsession, the first appearance on ‘Men in Black’, and a governmental battle over UFO sighting jurisdiction reaching directly to J. Edgar Hover. This incident – which has never before been turned into a film – happened just two days before Ken Arnold’s historic UFO sighting, and 16 days before the infamous Roswell crash. The summer of 1947 is noted by many as the “summer of saucers,” as numerous flying disc sightings were reported throughout the US, along with increased interest and investigation by authorities from the FBI and other government agencies. The film was shot entirely in the south Puget Sound area of Washington State, utilizing all-local crew and talent.
