ing until they get most of the answers correct. Alternative game play is to pose a mystery question that corresponds to each numbered debris object. Participants try to correctly match which question goes with what object. Sample question: “If I don’t get recycled, the wind may toss and turn me and send me into the ocean. I may be thin, but my lifespan littering the ocean may be 15 to 1,000 years as I take this long to decompose. I am one of the ocean’s biggest marine debris problems. Who am I?” (Answer : A Plastic Bag.)

Ocean Objects - ACTIVITY IDEA Containers filled with ocean specimens (good and bad) are designed to get kids thinking about what’s in the ocean, while at the same time, challenging viewers to identify and calculate the number of objects contained within. To make a big statement, fill a small portable fish tank with organic elements such as sand, rocks, plants and water to create a natural environment. Add to this peaceful scene ocean debris like toothbrushes, toys, and everyday discarded items. The goal is to juxtapose a serene aquarium setting with unrelated objects that pollute the display. Next to the tank, place a poster with some thought-provoking questions. Can you count the fish? (There are purposefully no fish in the tank.) Would you like to live here? How did all this stuff get here?, etc. The tank can be used as a visual statement or it can be incorporated into a guessing game that helps identifies some of the problems that recycling and reduced use can prevent.

Counting Populations - ACTIVITY IDEA Using the supplied name tags with assigned numbers and a central chalkboard, children attending World Oceans Day can be part of an allday number lottery. Akin to tagging and tracking fish in nature, kids will be able to see a regular posting of how many fellow children have entered the aquarium or zoo. Every half-hour, a few random numbers will be selected as World Oceans Day superstars. A chalkboard in a central location will list the selected numbers each half-hour, as well as what the total number of entries (kids) for the hour. The child’s chance of being selected (percentage) can also be calculated and listed each period. Through this activity, kids gain an understanding of how their chances
