A plant-filled staircase leads up to a tiny outdoor patio. Two couches, some stools, and a rug make up the lounge space. A larger table with a few stairs invites small group meetings.

“PERCHES”

“Perches” are places people choose to sit and stay. (The “stay” can be anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.) They tend to be randomly and conveniently placed, unremarkably ordinary in appearance, and surprisingly comfortable despite having zero back support.

Most often, the act of by 1 of 2 intentions:

1) To Sit and See

2)

1] PERCH ON STEPS 2] PERCH UP

People tend to perch on steps of grand entrances, mostly on the side and out of the way of the main path.

People perch on things that are up high because it’s fun. A high perch pairs well with “Perch with a View.”

4] WATER PERCH 5] GROUND

Perches by water, especially when the water is in arms’ or toes’ reach, attract both adults and children.

Section Snails Cathedral Concrete

Exposed concrete, rough aggregate, and visble grind marks speak of a certain “humanness.” The cathedral is revealing a messge through materiality: the church isn’t for the elite and polished, it’s there to be accepting.

Viewing Stones

Floor markers inlaid in the flooring act as joinery and markers for dances and ceremonies.

Stones become smoother over time as visitors are encouraged to touch them. Can this concept be applied to other materials within architectural spaces?

A Century Long Neck Cramp

Isabella Stewart Gardner specified that nothing in her galleries should be changed after her death; everything is in the same spot as when she originally placed it.

This poor head has had his neck craned up to the atrium for 100 years!

Railing with a Rest

Thin wood railings are used in the grand staircase in Renzo Piano’s modern wing. Over the view of the glass tunnel, he uses a flat piece of wood wide enough to lean on, providing a place to pause and look towards the historic building.
