It’s been a crazy, wild run the last eight months and it’s hard to believe we are to the last issue of the spring! We’ve sure put on a lot of miles

going to sales and events.

Production sales have gone incredibly well, starting with female sales last fall and progressing into bull sales. It’s very encouraging when the market is up and the sales remain strong.

Weather is always a factor and for us. It’s been a fairly warm, dry winter which is nice for awhile but eventually raises concerns whether we will get enough moisture this spring and summer. We have faith that we will get some nice spring rains.

Our hearts go out to those in Texas who were affected by the largest wildfire in history in the Texas Panhandle. As of March 18, 1.5 million acres had been consumed over a three week period.

The Texas A&M Forest Service (TAMFS) said March 16, that the Smokehouse Creek Fire, estimated at a total 1,058,482 acres, was 100% contained, as is the 144,045-acre Windy Deuce Fire.

On Feb. 29, the Smokehouse Creek Fire surpassed a million acres and became the largest wildfire ever to burn in Texas, according to TAMFS. The fire, which started near Stinnett in Hutchinson County on Feb. 26, scorched about 90% of Roberts County, devastated Canadian and Hemphill County, and also burned por-

is yet another testament to family generational ranches with a passion for Herefords building on a legacy that will shape the destiny of the future.

Keith and Cheryl have four children Dan, Matt, Erin, and Kris. Dan oversees the purebred operation and is joined by his wife Kyla and two children Hollis and Ivy. Recently, Kris, her husband Weston, and their three children, Falon, Jensen, and Marty, returned to the ranch, where Weston leads the commercial cattle and feedlot aspect of the business. Erin and Adam with their son Kal reside in east-

a sporting event in town.

Family legacy

The story of Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch stems from humble beginnings and the journey Keith Fawcett’s great-grandfather John took in 1906 to move from Arkansas to the prime grazing land in the

Purchasing 800 acres for a mere $12.50 per acre, John’s determination to create a homestead for his four sons, including Keith’s grandpa, George, established Fawcett Brothers. For a quarter of a century, the family worked together expanding their ranching business, but in time decided to each venture on their own path.

George’s only son, Robert embraced the responsibility of land stewardship, striving to expand their holdings by acquiring land from his sisters and nearby neighbors. In a time when ranching experienced many changes from horses to tractors in the 1940s, Robert was known for

his steadfast commitment to “make the best better.”

As Keith came of age and began to work alongside his parents, Robert and Marjean, he too began to lease land. In 1980, Keith and Cheryl were married and together continued to grow the ranch. Robert and Keith established today’s well-respected Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch (FECR) in 1985, named

after the creek that runs through the ranch. Robert remained active in the operation until he passed away in 2019. Today the operation consists of a 900head herd, 90% of which are registered Herefords.

Line One Longevity

In his search for genetics to create a solid cowherd foundation, Keith settled on Line One females. With their maternal traits, proven longevity, and great mothering ability it was an easy decision that Keith has not ventured from. “The Line One genetics has been our backbone and with the recent focus on carcass traits in the Line One cattle we are assured we can produce cattle with a place in the modern beef industry,” explains Dan.

Yet, always looking to remain at the forefront of the seedstock industry, FECR recognized the demand for polled bulls over the last 5-10 years. “Homozygous polled bulls along with the genetic explosion that happens when mating Line One cows to a polled bull is something that not only helps us produce the polled bulls some customers prefer but, also the value of having some horned genetics not too far in their pedigree has proven to be important,” says Dan. Bulls such as NJW 79Z Z311 Endure 173D and NJW 84B 4044 Fortified 238F have been incorporated to fit this need.

Every February, FECR sells more than 100 bulls, representing two different calving periods on the ranch. Part of the cow herd calves from February to March in the northern part of the ranch, providing yearling bulls for sale. The other herd, located in the southern area of the ranch, calves from the end of March to May, producing two-yearold bulls for the annual production sale. The two-year-old bulls graze from May to October, experiencing a genuine commercial ranch environment with no supplement.

“We strive to produce seedstock that the commercial cattlemen can use to increase their return on investment,” says Dan. With maternal power functional for more than 10 years, the goal is to produce calves with added pounds

Raising registered Hereford bulls for the marketplace is FECR’s core business. The family diligently selects genetics keeping in mind the direct impact their selection will have on their herd and their customers. “We want all cattle producers to excel. If we work together, we can expect a great future in the cattle industry,” says Keith.

at weaning and feeder cattle that will finish at target weight plus offer carcass merit. Short-marked bulls are preferred for their ability to produce a Baldyfaced calf with no extra white.

The family is proud of the recent adoption of FECR genetics by their seedstock peers. The 2024, $130,000 top-selling bull at Colyer Herefords of Idaho stemmed from a recent purchase of ECR 628 Advance 9490 ET. Topp Herefords, Grace City, ND purchased ECR Venture 0225, which produced several high-selling bulls, and Upstream Ranch, Taylor, NE has made several bull purchases. Dan returned to Upstream and purchased a son, from a sire line originating from FECR. Plus, fellow South Dakota breeders, Rausch Herefords, purchased an FECR Endure son which they used heavily on heifers

Keith remarks, “We keep gaining momentum year after year as our cus-

tomer base grows but this all wouldn’t be possible without our repeat buyers.”

Feeder Cattle Fury

FECR-based genetics market acceptance has expanded into the feeder calf market, truly demonstrating acceptance with FECR-sired feeder cattle purchased by repeat buying finishing operations who buy with confidence because they know how the genetics will perform.

This was reaffirmed at the February 2024 Mitchell Livestock Auction Hereford-influenced sale. The load of the Fawcett family Hereford and Baldy calves topped the market that day not only in Mitchell, SD but across the whole country against steers of any color, averaging 633 lbs. selling for $3.20 per pound.

Weston, takes the reins managing the feedlot operation where 1,200 to 1,500 feeder cattle are backgrounded and the ranches’ replacement heifers are devel-

oped.

“We strive to bring in steers and heifers from our customers, however, once we are full, we will help our customers place cattle at other locations, doing our best to continue to help them get the best price possible,” explains Weston.

Steers enter the feedlot right off the cow in the fall and are backgrounded to reach 700 to 900 lbs. Depending on the markets and weather, steers are sold to finishing feedyards between

late January through the beginning of March.

Heifer mates to the feeder steers are delivered back to FECR and developed alongside the homeraised heifers and bred to black sires, then sold as bred heifers in

the fall explains Weston. “Over the years we have built a nice client base of customers that have had great success with our bred heifers. This has been a great asset to our program.”

Showring Success

The Fawcett’s made their mark in the showring as well. Keith had early notable showring achievements with the 1966 Champion American Royal Overall Steer with a Hereford and Reserve Champion in 1975, that set the stage for the family’s impact in the showring.

All of Keith and Cheryl’s children participated in 4-H and the junior Hereford program, and now the grandchildren are beginning their show careers. While each child having success exhibiting Hereford heifers and steers, they

Generations of dedication

Robert was a strong supporter of 4H and served as the Open Class Beef Superintendent at the South Dakota State Fair as the Open Class Beef Superintendent for many years. For Robert and Marjean, their time at the fair was considered their family vacation, where they cherished connecting with other breeders and families. Today, Keith, Cheryl and family continue to create cherished memories and are a staple at the South Dakota State Fair especially with the next generation’s show careers now underway.

The cattle business is more than just raising quality livestock, it is giving

back to the industry. Keith served on the American Hereford Association (AHA) Board of Directors starting in 2010. Keith and Dan have both served on the South Dakota Hereford Asso-

ciation (SDHA) Board. Keith’s vision was instrumental in initiatives such as introducing Hereford steak sandwiches at DakotaFest, a large outdoor farm

The entire family dedicates time to county and local livestock industry events.

“Whether its marketing bulls or females our goal is to help our customers achieve the bottom line they are striving for,” says Weston. Dan adds, “Customers keep returning not only for the cattle, but I’d like to think that our customer service is as good as it gets.” Keith concludes, “We focus not just selling a bull – but selling a program and want our customers to know that the FECR program will be there to back them up when it’s time to sell the offspring.”

Centered around family, the primary emphasis remains on customer service, breeding high-quality Hereford seedstock, and grooming the next generation to uphold the legacy. With increased family participation, multiple enterprises are flourishing, positioning Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch as a leader in both seedstock and commercial industries.

North Dakota Ag Hall of Fame Honorees

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota. com) – Leaders of the wheat and cattle industries, from opposite corners of the state, are the latest inductees into the North Dakota Agricultural Hall of Fame. Brian O’Toole from Pembina County and Roger Stuber from Bowmen County, ND are the newest members.

Roger Stuber, a third-generation owner and partner of Stuber Ranch near Bowman, ND has a lifetime of service to the beef industry on the local, state and national level. Stuber’s unique contributions to the U.S. cattle industry came through positions of leadership, including serving as president of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association, National Cattlemen’s Association (NCA) and American Hereford Association. He also served on the North Dakota Beef Commission and North Dakota Natural Beef. During his term as NCA President, Stuber was instrumental in the early planning stages of the beef industry’s long-range plan, which included unification of the four national beef industry organizations. A higher education that included courses in business administration and law served him well when, as President of the NCA in 1993, he was able to influence the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in Geneva, Switzerland. Stuber has been inducted into the American Hereford Hall of Fame and the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, was named “Trailblazer of the Year” in 1995 by Beef Magazine, and is a recipient of the ND Stockmen’s Association’s “Top Hand Award.” Today, the Stuber Ranch, under the direction of Roger Stuber and his family, is five generations strong. Stuber Hereford Ranch cattle have been sold throughout the U.S. and exported to countries as far away as Argentina and Kazakhstan.

Brian O’Toole traveled the world promoting U.S. wheat and North Dakota-grown wheat in particular. O’Toole is a partner in T.E. O’Toole Farms, a sixth-generation Centennial Farm in Pembina County. O’Toole served for 12 years on the North Dakota Wheat Commission and is remembered for his unwavering support for the development of hard red spring wheat vari-

eties that upheld a reputation for high quality. His passion for wheat and wheat promotion caused him to move through the chairs of U.S. Wheat Associates (USW), eventually becoming chairman in 2015. U.S. Wheat Associates is the industry’s market development organization, working to expand the market for U.S. wheat in more than 100 countries. During his service on the state Wheat Commission and USW, O’Toole traveled on trade missions to 23 of those countries, including Cuba, a market that had been closed to U.S. citizens for fifty years. Additional industry involvement by O’Toole includes chairing the ND Crop Improvement and Seed Association and the State Board of Agricultural Research and Extension’s Wheat Granting Committee. He served for 16 years at the Wheat Marketing Center in Portland, Oregon. O’Toole and his wife Sara farm with a son, daughter and son-in law. He is president of O’Toole Seed, a family-owned seed company. He has received Outstanding Young Farmer, Master Farmer, and Premier Seed Grower Awards.

The two men were honored during the Valley City Area Chamber and North Dakota Winter Show Ag Social on Wednesday, March 6th during the 87th annual North Dakota Winter Show.

Joel Lemer received the Rutledge Kane Showmanship Award during the ceremony and Lane Moellenkamp was named the 2024 Crop Show Honoree.

The North Dakota Agricultural Hall of Fame was established by the 1997 North Dakota legislature to provide a way to honor men and women who have made significant contributions to the state’s leading industry, agriculture.

tions of Carson, Gray and Wheeler counties in Texas and Ellis and Roger Mills counties in Oklahoma.

Our friend Lee Haygood, Indian Mound Ranch at Canadian, TX said while they lost some pasture to the fire, they didn’t lose any cattle or buildings.

“We have had quite a couple of days, but the outpouring of calls and messages has been awesome,” said Lee.

On the second day of the fire in Robert’s County we decided that our risk

After ending up in Elk City we waited for road reports to head back. I finally got to the ranch and there was still fire although the main line had passed.

We are so blessed that we are healthy and all of our livestock, barns and pens made it through the fire. I would guess we had 80% of the ranch burn but still consider ourselves very lucky. Thank you for reaching out and as time per-

mits I will try to get back to everyone.”

Several days later Lee added, “It definitely has affected the cattle, but they are coming back now and we are mostly calved out. We have found a couple of places to move cattle for the summer and we will move them right after A.I. on Memorial Day.” We’re happy that things turned out as well as they did for the Haygood family. There will still be challenges in the coming year.

We know that not all producers fared as well as the Haygoods and our hearts go out to everyone.

Many relief efforts are underway for those affected. Sadly two people lost

their lives in the fire. Hundreds of head of livestock were burned in the fire and many buildings were lost; miles of pasture and fencing were also lost. In the aftermath, moving cattle and other livestock to healthy pasture and finding feed is integral as is rebuilding of fences. Lots to do in the recovery effort.

As I write this, we are preparing for a series of spring snow storms. While we don’t welcome severe weather, the snow will give us much-needed moisture. I hope Texas and other dry areas will get rain and snow to help their situations.

Bovine High Mountain Disease, Brisket Disease, or Pulmonary Hypertension

Bovine

also known as Brisket Disease or High Mountain Disease (HMD) is actually not a contagious disease, but a physiological response of the bovine body to decreased oxygen availability (hypoxia) at high altitude. Dr. Tim Holt, D.V.M. has spent over four decades Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) testing cattle and researching the disease.

Brisket Disease, also known as High Mountain Disease, results in death due to congestive right heart failure secondary to Pulmonary Hypertension, which is an increase in blood flow resistance in the lungs.

“Low oxygen concentration at high elevation results in the constriction of the small vessels in the lungs to attempt to push blood to areas of the lungs in which there is more available oxygen,” Dr. Holt said. “This constriction of the vessels of the lungs over time results in a decrease in lung space for blood circulation causing the heart to work harder to push blood through the thickened, constricted vessels.”

This is the genetic aspect of pulmonary hypertension or Brisket Disease.

Eventually, the right side of the heart can become enlarged due to overwork, and its walls can thicken, leading to heart failure. Prior to death, the animal’s heart is working so hard that fluid will be pushed through the arterial walls, which accumulates in the animal’s body cavity and brisket area, hence the term, “Brisket Disease.” Hearts of cattle who die of HMD can be found up to twice the normal size.

“HMD is a whole cascade of body responses initiated by hypoxia,” Dr. Holt said. “When some cattle come to high altitude, they have a hyper response to the hypoxia, initiating the vasoconstriction cascade that can result in heart failure. The situation is made worse by the fact that cattle have small lungs in relation to their body size. The heritability of and genetics behind HMD seem to be multifactorial and not completely understood, but are actively being investigated.”

A PAP test is a means to measure

Pulmonary Hypertension or blood flow resistance through the lungs, making it possible to predict an animal’s survivability in high altitude. It has been determined that the low oxygen stress (chronic hypoxia) needed to stimulate problems is not present until approximately 5,000 feet elevation, therefore PAP testing below 5,000 feet makes it difficult to identify and predict the genetic aspect and survivability of the disease. It is also important to note that this pulmonary artery constriction (hypertrophy) secondary to high altitude hypoxia is chronic in nature making it a necessity for the animal to be in altitudes greater than 5,000 feet for a minimum period of three to four weeks prior to testing. The longer the animal is in high altitude prior to testing the more reliable the test is.

The higher the elevation of the PAP test the more accurate the results. When looking at the PAP score and the elevation at which it was taken it is important to evaluate where the animal will be living throughout its lifetime.

It has been determined that the expectation of the PAP score is to increase approximately 1- 1.5mm/Hg per 1,000 feet elevation climb if the initial test was taken at elevations greater than 6,500 feet. For example, if an animal is purchased, greater than 12 months of age and tested at 6500 feet and has a PAP score of 40mmHg, a 1-1.5mm/ Hg must be added to that score for each 1000 feet rise in elevation the animal is transported to. For instance, if they are to graze at 10,000 feet the true PAP at 10,000 feet would be approximately 44-46mmHg which is a moderate risk score, and a moderate risk animal for use at that altitude.

Dr. Holt noted that not all animals follow the above generalizations. In one study conducted in Laramie, Wyoming, it was shown at a statistically significant level that cattle tested at 5,000 feet and moved to 6,500 feet for three weeks and retested averaged an increase in the PAP of 7.2mmHg.

“Testing above 5,000 feet is the optimum elevation for evaluating a PAP score,” Dr. Holt said. “Evaluating age and elevation together is a must. If an

animal less than 12 months of age is tested at elevations lower than 6,500 feet the degree of inaccuracy is unpredictable.”

It is best to think of those cattle PAP tested below 6,500 feet as a screening test only and not a test validated for genetic breeding potential. A PAP test at this elevation can be accurately used to find those animals already experiencing pulmonary hypertension thus allowing management decisions at this time. The chance of getting a high false PAP reading is very rare at any elevation.

Cattle present extreme individual differences in disease resistance, with some animals appearing to be very prone to the congestive heart failure while others able to live at high altitude and have an elevated PAP test for years with no apparent problems. Even though they survive, their offspring may not. All breeds of cattle appear to be susceptible to this disease.

“High-PAP animals (>50 mm/Hg) have been found in all breeds tested,” Dr. Holt said. “Some breeds, and pedigrees within breeds, appear to be more naturally resistant to the effects of high

altitude, lending support to the conclusion that specific genetic factors can be managed to decrease clinical cases of HMD.”

Dr. Holt has tested over 490,000 head of cattle from which to base his observations on breed differences.

“Some blame is placed on the black Angus breed, and they do have higher numbers testing at failing rates; but we test more black Angus than any other breed. The more you have, the more you have to fail. Red Angus are similar.”

American Horned Herefords bred and raised at high

altitudes for generations tend to perform well under PAP testing, but Holt said this does not hold true across the Hereford breed; Canadian and polled Herefords have higher failure rates than their American horned cousins.

Some cattle populations have selfeliminated HMD.

“The Creole cattle in the Simi area of Peru have been living at extreme elevation for thousands of years, and they have no issues with HMD,” Dr. Holt said. “However, they are highly inbred and have a very small gene pool after many years of inbreeding. When outside sires are brought in, they lose 80% of their calf crop to HMD.”

Currently, the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture is trying to find a sire that can be used as an outcross on these cattle, and is looking at multiple breed options.

A combined effort between Colorado State University’s Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine programs is studying the relationship between HMD and Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF) or “Feedlot” Brisket disease and indicates that both are triggered by hypoxia. The latest research

Coleman Herefords at Westcliffe, CO, run their cattle at around 8,000 feet. Ken and his wife Suzanne started their registered herd in 1995. They sell breeding stock to ranchers running cattle as high as 12,000 feet so testing is important. This herd bull at Coleman Herefords had an excellent Pulmonary Arterial test score of 39.

indicates the feedlot death is most likely the same hypoxic cascade as seen at elevation, but initiated by other factors not related to altitude.

“We are a long way from solving this problem, but cautious breeders can use the same information that high altitude breeders use for sire selection to hopefully reduce losses of feeder cattle to BCHF. PAP testing a large group of cattle on feed in Texas shortly before slaughter revealed a high number of cattle sired by two particular bulls that would not be recommended for use at elevation.

“It’s not a mystery disease at all, we just need to figure out how to deal with it,” Holt said.

Ken Coleman is the 5th generation raising Hereford cattle on his family ranch near Westcliffe, in south central Colorado.

“My great-grandparents on both sides of my family homesteaded in this valley,” he said. “I didn’t go very far from my roots. I was raised with commercial cattle and my wife and I started our registered herd in 1995.”

They run their cattle around 8,000 feet elevation and sell breeding stock to producers running cattle as high as 12,000 feet elevation. He believes Herefords do a little better than Angus or Red Angus and other breeds of cattle but said that it’s “definitely not a given that just because an animal is Hereford it will PAP well.”

Coleman has been PAP testing his herd for 29 years, and says that improving his herd’s PAP scores is a “work in progress.”

“We tested our heifer calves a couple of days ago and about 80% of them had scores in the 30s,” he said. “Looking back at my notes from our early years of testing, out of a group of 20 bulls I’d only have two with scores in the 30s.”

Coleman started testing his heifers to help see how the progeny of different sires compared.

“Last year we had more test highs than usual, and a lot of them were offspring of a bull that PAP tested well,” he said. “We’re definitely going to have to have a lot of data to get it completely under control.”

When Coleman started PAP testing his cattle, there was no data out there for comparison to aid in recognizing what was good and what wasn’t.

“We have gone through a lot of trial and error,” he said. “Our cattle are all Line 1 Herefords, but we have learned that there are genetics we need to steer away from even within Line 1.

PAP scoring in simple terms, Coleman says, is similar to taking blood pressure. Scores from animals tested over 6,800 feet should be in the 30s, and he is com-

fortable with scores up to 42 at their elevation of 8,000 feet. Besides the test score, other things need to be factored in.

“Body condition, age, or a bout of bad pneumonia at any time in the animal’s life can all affect PAP scores. Most of the time cattle don’t get Brisket Disease until colder temperatures arrive,” Coleman said. “Around here the majority of the cattle in the valley leave for the winter; they’re taken to lower elevation. We keep our cattle here year-round.”

Coleman has taken cattle to a lease near Jefferson at 10,000 feet elevation, and he feels that is a good test for his herd.

“They did great and grew well up there,” he said. “I do think that I’ve made a lot of progress through the years just in natural selection; the ones that do better are the better PAP’ing ones. Sometimes if one doesn’t slick off, or doesn’t look well, that’s what you have going on.”

University of Wyoming researchers Dr. Hannah Cunningham-Hollinger, Dr. Cody Gifford, Dr. Shelby Rosasco, Dr. Scott Lake and Ph.D. student Chase Markel are working to evaluate PAP measurements on cattle at the Laramie Research Extension Center, with a predominant focus on finishing cattle and BCHF.

“We are investigating the role that various metrics including feed efficiency, growth, performance, age, sex, inflammatory indicators, respiratory tract microbiome, carcass characteristics, and genetics may have on risk for BCHF and/or HMD,” Dr. Cunningham-Hollinger said.

This research is not alone in challenging the notion that HMD is solely the result of heritable traits, Markel said.

“Instead, these studies suggest that various environmental and management factors influence HMD and can also influence the risk of BCHF. Factors such as the degree of adiposity, age, and sex of feedlot cattle are now recognized as potential contributors to BCHF risk.”

While HMD predominantly affects producers at high elevations, Markel

said there is compelling evidence indicating significant downstream consequences of this condition regardless of altitude.

“Although the exact cause of BCHF remains unconfirmed, its disease progression closely mirrors that of HMD, albeit triggered by different variables,” he said.

Markel also cited Dr. Holt’s research in the area of HMD.

“A significant portion of the research on breed differences regarding HMD has been conducted at Colorado State University, with credit to Dr. Timothy Holt and his colleagues for amassing a large sample size,” he said. “Dr. Holt’s research demonstrates clear distinctions in HMD risk among different breed types. For instance, findings indicate that the American Horned Hereford exhibits the highest degree of resistance to HMD, while Red and Black Angus cattle are identified as the most susceptible of the common beef breeds.”

Cunningham-Hollinger said that while HMD has been something only high elevation ranchers were concerned about, the potential downstream impacts on carcass metrics and feedlot death losses due to the relationship between HMD and BCHF impact the entire cattle industry.

“The research we are seeing at high elevation where carcass metrics are being impacted by high PAP brings alarming concerns for our industry,” she said. “We are seeing sub-clinical cases with significant impact on other traits such as feed efficiency and carcass quality.”

“In states like Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas, among others, feedlot cattle are experiencing BCHF-related issues regularly,” Markel said. “Although the exact cause of BCHF remains unconfirmed, its disease progression closely mirrors that of HMD, albeit triggered by different variables. Additionally, while there is limited reporting on the downstream consequences of sub-clinical BCHF on carcass attributes, preliminary data from the Gifford/Cunningham-Hollinger lab suggests that this condition may significantly affect consumer beef products beyond the observed death losses in feedlots.”

James “Jim” Dale Bellis, 67, of Aurora, MO passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, after a decade-long battle with cancer. He was born in Aurora on March 20, 1956, to Dale and Dorothy Bellis; the oldest of three children.

Brought up on the family farm raising cattle, agriculture became one of the passions of his life. Active in FFA, he served as a chapter president, area president, and state secretary. He was mentored by his agriculture teacher, Mr. Jim Golding, who introduced him to Hereford cattle, helped him pick out his first Hereford that started his herd, and empowered him to go to college at Mizzou to become an agriculture teacher. He was a mentor to many aspiring agriculture students.

He worked at Wheaton and Aurora High Schools as an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor. Then, served as the district supervisor of agriculture education with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. After retiring from the state, he was hired as the assistant to the Dean of the College of Agriculture at Missouri State University. He helped transform the MSU Department of Agriculture into the College of Agriculture. His farming accomplishments include receiving the Missouri Hereford Breeder of the Year award, serving on the American Hereford Association Board of Directors, and being inducted into the Missouri Hereford Association’s Hall of Fame.

He was a member of Orange Cumberland Presbyterian, where he attended church all his life. He was baptized in Honey Creek, going on to serve the church by playing the piano (along side his wife) and as an elder, serving multiple times as a delegate from Missouri Presbytery to the Cumberland Presbyterian General Assembly.

He met his wife Carla at Camp Cumberland during Convocation when he was in college and she was a junior in high school. They were married Aug. 12, 1978 and had three children.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carla; his children, Jamie (Kevin) Johansen, Joanna (Neal) Wilkinson, and Jonathon Bellis; four grandchildren; his brother, Bob (Sharon) Bellis; his sister, Julie (Tony) Keatts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Scott Kennedy

Scott Kennedy, age 70, of Philip, SD, died on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 in a horse accident in Wickenburg, AZ.

Scott James Kennedy was born on February 10, 1954 in Rapid City, SD. Scott was the fourth child of Howard & Dorothy Kennedy. He attended school in Philip from elementary through high school, graduating in 1972. During his school days, he played football, baseball, basketball and rodeoed. His basketball team went to state his senior year, which was quite a highlight to his life thus far. Scott started team roping after graduating high school.

In the fall of 1973, the Kennedy families bought a ranch in Faith, SD.

Shortly after high school graduation, at the age of 19, Scott moved to Faith with his cousin, Mick, and brother, Kent, to work on the family ranch up there.

Scott met Beth (Schuelke) of Mud Butte, SD while living in Faith, SD. Scott and Beth were united in marriage on October 3rd, 1980. In 1981, Scott and Beth were blessed with their first son, Radley, while living in Faith, SD. Also in 1981, Scott lost his uncle, Duck (Wayne), in a horse accident. Scott, Beth and Radley moved to Philip in the Fall of 1982 and he continued ranching and partnered with his dad (Howard Kennedy) at the ranch just west of Philip. Scott and Beth were blessed with their second son, Tyrel, in 1985. The family of four continued to live in Philip while he ranched with his dad. In 1989, Scott and Beth completed their family when they were blessed with their daughter, Blayne.

In 1991, Scott and Beth built a home on the ranch west of Philip and moved their family of five to the country. Scott and Beth raised their three children on the Kennedy Ranch.

His love of rodeo and basketball never faded. Scott coached boys basketball in Philip for several years and always supported his kids, and many others, in rodeo.

He enjoyed ranching and time with his family. Horses were always a true passion for Scott throughout his life and he spent his last moments horseback, doing what he loved.

Survivors include his wife Beth Kennedy of Philip; two sons Radley Kennedy (Cassidy) and her two daughters Izzabella and Emberlyn; and Tyrel Kennedy, both of Philip; daughter Blayne (Kenny) Feidler of New Underwood; two grandsons, Townes and July; brother Kent (Kathy) Kennedy of Rapid City; sister Judy Goldhammer of Wall; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Scott was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Dorothy Kennedy; his grandparents George and Anna Kennedy; his brother Dennis “Denny” Kennedy; and his brother-in-law Paul Goldhammer.

Private family interment will be held at a later date.
