In August I had the plea sure of help ing out at the SD Hereford Association’s Jill Hotchkiss Ribeye Steak Sandwich booth at Dakotafest. Each year for about the last 15+, the South Dakota Here ford Association has had booth there and it just gets better and better. With such an incredible product it is easy to understand why it is so popu lar. Breeder participation is encouraged and there is rarely a shortage of help. It is really a testament of the wonder ful Hereford breeders in this state and their dedication to the breed and their state orga nization. Believe me, there are a lot of very hard workers in this group and they know how to work together. Imagine a group of farmers, ranchers, men and women, young and old who can put a sandwich together in 3.5 sec onds. That’s pretty impres sive! Then there is the grilling crew. We (the sandwich mak ers) aren’t sure what all goes on back there at the grills but it is an incredibly hot, smoky, thankless job unless you con (continued on page 8)

Phenomenal year for SDHA’s CHB ribeye steak sandwiches at Dakotafest By Jill Bayers Hotchkiss Once again the South Dakota Hereford Asso ciation (SDHA) and its members had a fantastic year serving Certified Hereford Beef® ribeye steak sandwiches at Dakotafest. It is one of the most popular food items at the event. “We served around 4,150 lbs. of CHB ribeyes at our busiest point on Wednesday,” said SDHA comanager Mark Johnson. “I calculated that from 11-1 we served a sandwich every 3.5 seconds.” And in order to keep up with the pace, a large crew of experienced workers is a must. Greater Omaha announces start-up of high speed box storage warehouse By Jan Ellefson Greater Omaha Packing is ex cited to announce the start-up of a new Automatic Box Storage warehouse located at their pro duction facility in Omaha, NE. This new, high speed automat ed warehouse will allow Greater Omaha Packing to better service its over 200 customers in 65+ countries worldwide. The compa ny will be able to more efficiently ship its 6,000 products, allowing for specific product sequencing within the pallet and truck, tai lored to each individual customer. This is not the first expan sion project for Greater Omaha over the last few years. The Val
