The “new school,â€? at 1600 Dixie Highway, has housed 1,858 Colonels from 15 graduating classes since it opened in 2003. But, the foundation for the school was established when the doors opened in 1925 at Mother of God School on 6th Street, with a freshman class of 32. As a Catholic school, religious education and participation in the sacraments have always been the cornerstone of a student’s experience at Covington Catholic. Service as a way of living the faith was formalized as a school requirement with the institution of the Community Service Program by Mr. Bill Snyder (CCH Class of 1964) in 2001. By identifying real needs from local organizations like ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) and Special Olympics, tracking service hours, and awarding those with exceptional commitment with Varsity letters, the total hours completed per year has grown from about 3,000 in the early years of the program to over 15,000 today. As Mr. Al Hertsenberg has often said, “the goodness is in them [the students]. Covington Catholic gives them the opportunity to bring it out.

14

Mr. Snyder included this in his Commencement Address to the Class of 2017: “CCH is a Gospel centered institution. In four years, you have H[SHULHQFHG WKH PDQ\ GLÎ?HUHQW ZD\V &KULVW JUDFHG \RX WKURXJK \RXU teachers, your teams, your clubs and your friends. The last command to us in the Gospels is the “eschatological taskâ€?, the challenge to now carry this forward, play it forward, so to speak. You CAN change the world, one person at a time. It’s not what you gather, it’s what you SCATTER that tells what type of life you’ve lived.â€?

THROUGH WISDOM A HOUSE I S B U I L T... - PROVERBS 24:3-4

BUILDING MINDS

IN THE HOUSE OF BLUE “Tiny Houses” are a relatively new development. While not for everyone, the thing that seems to make them work is creative cross-functionality of features. Even in larger homes, the popular “open concept” implies that a single space must support multiple functions. Schools are expected to impart knowledge – facts, basic skills, etc. But, wisdom comes from the application and integration of that knowledge in novel ways.

HOUSE OF

BLUE COVINGTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

COVINGTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

CovCath’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program is all about integration. Courses are based on activity-, project-, and problem-based instructional design, centered on hands-on, real-world activities, projects and problems that help students understand how the knowledge and skills they develop in the classroom may be applied in everyday life. The strength of CovCath’s Science, Math, and Technology (Computer Aided Design, Computer Programming) departments provides a strong foundation to STEM learning. So much so, that CovCath was named a “Distinguished School by the nation’s leading STEM curriculum provider, one of three high schools in Kentucky and one of only 133 schools nationwide (out of 11,500 eligible U.S. schools) to receive the honor.

Covington Catholic’s results in building integrated minds are consistently evident: • Seven National Merit Finalists in two of the past three years (the most of any school in Northern Kentucky); • ACT and AP Exam scores which far exceed state and national averages (the Average ACT Composite for the Class of 2018 = 26); • 43 students over the past 5 years who were admitted to Kentucky Governor’s Programs (GSP, GSA, GSE); • Graduating classes who earn more than $17 million (past three year average) in scholarships and grants to colleges and universities across the country, including $22 million in 2018 (a school record, for the second year in a row).

HOUSE OF

BLUE

More evidence of CovCath’s integrated learning includes: • A student’s original melody was selected by a composer to be developed into a new piece played by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, with the student and his Colonel classmates in attendance at the work’s premiere; • Engineering students speak not only to technical but also cost, demand DQG VRFLHWDO QHHG HWKLFDO OHJDO DVSHFWV RI WKHLU GHVLJQV DQG UHČľHFW KRZ they managed a team approach to achieve the best solution; • Now in its fourth year, the Mock Trial Team has grown to over twenty PHPEHUV DQG UHDFKHG WRS WLHU Č´QLVKHV LQ UHJLRQDO VWDWH DQG QDWLRQDO competitions, with multiple members earning “MVPâ€?-type awards.
