FROM THE PRINCIPAL

BOB ROWE

As this JOURNAL reaches you during the holiday season, we hope you have many opportunities to connect with your friends and family. We are grateful for connections from the past, present and future that support our Mission at Covington Catholic. We recognize that the past at CovCath has been fundamental to establishing who we are today. This fall, we celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the football program, recognizing players, families and coaches whose legacy is remembered as we celebrate the success of this year’s season. Each fall, we share a memorial mass to remember our connection to those from our community who exemplify “A Spirit That Will Not Die.” Today’s students benefit from those who connect with CovCath as donors, as mentors, as volunteers, as coaches, and as teachers. In addition to the support which provides tuition assistance to 1 in 6 current students, donors fund new endowment gifts, help sponsor students for the annual Nicaraguan Mission Trip, and provide the capital for the campus transformation currently underway. Recently, the NEHS recognized the commitment of our staff, with 11 members who have 25+ years of service and 11 alumni who are giving back to their alma mater. Volunteers provide countless ways to support our school, including the creation of new opportunities for students to develop skills and connect to their future, such as with the three year-old Mock Trial Team. In terms of the future of Covington Catholic, I can say, with confidence, that every day, we grow stronger and better. Since receiving the National Blue Ribbon School Award a year ago (for the second time in the last decade, the only high school in the state of Kentucky to do so), we continue to innovate and lead change, such as with the implementation this year of the 1:1 technology program, and with the expansive facilities improvements. And, of course, congratulations to our Colonel Football team on an outstanding, record-breaking season. We recently welcomed over 179 families of prospective students to our Open House, representing 40 grade schools. No doubt, these young men who will be future students of Covington Catholic will find things here with which they will connect – spiritually, academically, physically and socially. God’s blessings, Bob Rowe

LIGHTS AND ACTION FOLLOWING THE DED

The long-anticipated lights are finally a reality in our newly renovated and improved stadium. In addition to the lights which enable evening events, the $2.6 Million project includes new stands, a new modern pressbox, a new turf field (partially funded by a $200,000 NFL Foundation Grassroots Grant), and an impressive new entrance. Dennis Griffin Stadium was dedicated on Friday, August 18th, prior to the first-ever home football game under the permanent lights (which the Colonels won: CCH 49 – Ryle 17). With Lisa Cooney Henderson as the evening’s emcee, in attendance were: the Most Reverend Roger J. Foys, Bishop of the Diocese of Covington, and other clergy; Superintendent of Schools Michael Clines; Mrs. Joyce Griffin and Griffin family members; capital campaign co-chairs Rob Carlisle, Traci Griffin Kautzman, Bill Snyder and Carlo Wessels, as well as campaign leader Sue Finke; and members of Covington Catholic staff, faculty, school board, Boosters organization, students, and many additional supporters. The celebration moved to the field with several memorable moments. Studentathletes from the Soccer, Track and Field, and Lacrosse teams helped unfurl the Stars and Stripes across the field while 2013 alumnus John Frisch sang the National Anthem. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Williams presented a check for $46,200, which Mr. Williams (CCH 1963) announced would result in over $1 Million being donated from The Kenny and Brian Williams Fund to Covington Catholic and its students. All current students wore “Bright Lights” t-shirts provided by the event sponsors while CCH Ambassadors helped lead the countdown to the moment the “switch was flipped” to light up the stadium. The festivities for the evening were sponsored by The Kenny and Brian Williams Fund and

COLONELS CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CCH FOOTBALL PROGRAM A huge crowd of Colonels celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Covington Catholic Football on October 13th, 2017, with a victory vs. longtime rival Highlands. The game, like all home games this season, was held under the lights at the newly dedicated Dennis Griffin Stadium. Special recognition was given for families of all players who have a retired jersey before the game and for each of the six past state championship teams. A post-game celebration for all alumni of the historic Covington Catholic football program was held in the gym. Covington Catholic won its first two football state championships in back-to-back fashion in 1987 and 1988 behind Head Coach Lynn Ray, both against Paducah Tilghman in the Class AAA Championship. Covington Catholic did not reach the State Championship game again until five years later, in 1993. They went on to not only win the championship in 1993 against Lincoln County, they also won it the next year against Bowling Green. Three years later in 1997, Covington Catholic won the State Championship once again, this time against Hopkinsville for their fifth championship in 11 years. After a nine-year drought and the retirement of Coach Ray, Coach John Rodenburg led the Colonels back to the State Championship with a win against Bowling Green in 2006.

ABOUT COACH RAY The names “Lynn Ray” and “Covington Catholic Football” have become synonymous through the years in Northern Kentucky. The program as it stands today would not be the same if not for Coach Lynn Ray. When Coach Ray came to Covington Catholic in 1973 as an assistant coach, the football team practiced at the Ludlow Dump and had never seen the playoffs. In 2004 when Coach Ray resigned, the Colonels had won five State Championships and compiled a record of 234-132, including 42-16 in 20 postseason appearances and a 5-0 record

in State Championship games. Since 2004, Coach Ray has been enshrined near the field and locker room with a “Spirit Rock” that reads, “Coach Lynn Ray. Thirty-one years of dedicated excellence to Covington Catholic Football. A commitment made to developing minds, bodies, and souls that is handed on through generations with that Spirit that Will Not Die!” As a longtime teacher, coach, friend, and mentor of Covington Catholic students, Coach Ray was honored during halftime of the anniversary game. Clearly, the 2017 Colonel Football Team well-represented the legacy and tradition

of excellence that Coach Ray started in the early 1970’s with another dominant 2017 season. “This 50th anniversary,” Coach Eviston says, “calls us to take the time to reflect on the past and to respect the time, talents, and efforts of so many that helped build this football program to where it is today. We feel blessed to be a part of this program during this unique moment in time and every player and coach in the program right now continues to work extremely hard to make sure we represent the program and jersey the right way, a way that all those before us and after us will be proud.” COVINGTON CATHOLIC JOURNAL

COLONEL HEADLINES The Mock Trial Team competed in the Yale Bulldog Invitational Mock Trial tournament and finished fifth overall. The team members in the photo are, from left to right, Ethan Deters, Jack Scharstein, Trey Rottinghaus, Will Akin, Zach Thapar, Issac Boldery, Owen Piatt, Avery Dietz, and Matthew Batshoun. Avery Dietz received an Outstanding Attorney award, based on measured performance during the competition. For the past three years, Judge Amul Thapar, with the assistance of Stephanie Dietz, a local attorney, and Michelle Snodgrass, Campbell County Commonwealth Attorney, have coached the CCH Mock Trial Team. Mock Trial is a pretend trial: all teams are given the same case scenario and must prepare for both sides of the case. All teams are given the same amount of time to develop their case, prepare their witnesses, and prepare for the trial. The Corps of Cadets participated in a second annual “Military Day” with support from the National Guard unit in Boone County. After suiting up in uniforms, they learned and practiced battle tactics, ate MREs for lunch, and played a lot of paintball. In addition to lots of other activities, the cadets are selling American Flag pins to raise money for Corps of Cadets shirts and make a donation to Wounded Warriors. Pins are available in the CCH office for $5 each. Sophomore Joseph Kiely won 3rd place (out of 120 entries) in the Books by the Banks writing competition. He also recently was named an Eagle Scout for Troop 727 (the troop’s 35th).

Out of over 4,000 campers who attended YMCA Camp Ernst this year, sophomore Sean Boyer was among the two percent who won the prestigious Honor Camper award. The Honor Camper award was created in 1928 by Camp Ernst Founder Willard Wade to recognize campers with outstanding character and leadership. CCH freshmen Jack Bell from St. Joseph (Crescent Springs) and Trey Gronotte (St. Pius X) received awards in 2017 from The Aubrey Rose Foundation, which provides scholarships to rising freshmen attending Catholic high schools in the NKY/Greater Cincinnati area. Sophomore John Lawrie was the winner of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s Melody Contest. His melody will be fully composed and orchestrated by composer Brian Nabors to premiere at the CSO’s Express Yourself concerts on January 24 and February 13! The composer visited CCH to talk to John and his class about the melody, and has invited the class to attend one of the CSO concerts free of charge! Sophomore Sam Paley raced in the US Formula 4 race in Austin, Texas (Car #26). He ended the last 2 rounds of the season in COTA well with a 13th and 16th. See Sam Paley Racing on Facebook for more info and photos.

Sophomore Paul Allison was interviewed by Sheila Gray and Bob Herzog in a September 4th segment on Good Morning Cincinnati (Local 12 News) about his award-winning photography. See his work at www. pallison351.wixsite.com/ photography. A group of Colonels traveled to Hopkinsvile Kentucky to view the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. Colonels back in Park Hills viewed it from the CovCath stadium. This eclipse was the first since 1918 with a path of totality crossing the USA’s Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

Junior Nathan Deimling’s club soccer team played for the US Youth Soccer National Championship. His team (Cincinnati United Premier U16 Boys) made it to the semi-finals. He is the only NKY player on the team. Seniors Brett Lampe, Drew Hummel and juniors Max Gray, Kevin Finke and Jacob Shriver had art work selected for the 2017 Thomas More College Juried High School Art Competition. Overall, 200 pieces were selected and 50 selected for display. Brett Lampe was also awarded the TMC art scholarship and Max Gray was awarded the Faculty Choice Award.

High AP scores often translate directly into college credit and/or placement into high level courses in that subject. Anthony Zechella, Assistant Principal, Dean of Academics, noted, “The AP Scholar designation is a tremendous honor for the recipients, their families, and their teachers. Our AP program is very rigorous. Success in any of these subjects requires a great deal of dedication and diligence by all members of our learning community. The success of our students in the AP program is further evidence of Covington Catholic’s commitment to educational excellence.”

FUTURE COLONELS Do you know a young man in 1st-8th grade who might be a “Future Colonel”? Please encourage him to sign up at www.covcath.org/admissions to receive information about our Future Colonel events, summer camps, and (for 8th graders) Shadow Day visits to CCH. We have over 50 grade schools represented within our current student enrollment, and now typically see more than 40% of our classes coming from outside the five parish “district” schools. All are welcome to “Be A Colonel!”

DID YOU KNOW… Jesus, Mary and Joseph, a 30” x 40” oil on canvas was painted in 1991 for the Class of 1971 twenty year reunion with Tom Lohre’s nephew as Jesus and his wife as Mary. During the reunion, the person who donated the most for the painting got to pick who Joseph was. The winner picked his father’s military image. The painting hangs in the office of Covington Catholic High School, Park Hills, Kentucky.

The Colonel Crazy Day of Giving was a great success. Gerald Hardcorn, Class of 1962, challenged the Covington Catholic community to participate in a Day of Giving for the school. Mr. Hardcorn offered to match the first $10,000 raised that day. Students promoted the day through social media posts and photos, encouraging alumni, parents and friends to give. In addition, students participated by raising $800 for Be Concerned. Over $59,000 was raised on that day thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of our great CovCath community!

COLONELS AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

The CovCath Community Service Program helps fulfill the CCH Mission and practice our Catholic values. Here are three recent examples of our students serving and leading across our region: • Senior Avery Dietz started a program last year called Athletes Again to collect gently used athletic equipment and redistribute it to where it can be put to use again. After successfully contributing to DePaul Christo Del Rey High School in Cincinnati last year, this year he initiated out of uniform days at CCH and St. Pius X to purchase and deliver volleyball equipment to Holy Family school in Covington. • Senior Drew Danneman and sophomore Mason Brewer were quoted in a Northern Kentucky Tribune story (November 22, 2017) about the nearly three tons of food and nonperishable items CCH students collected for Be Concerned. • Several CCH students are members of the Northern Kentucky Advisory Board (NKYAB), which develops leadership and service experience among teens from across the region. Besides networking with other schools on service opportunities, the group performs one project each month to benefit the Life Learning Center in Covington, a multi-purpose space dedicated to helping at-risk citizens reach their highest potential. A photo, including seniors Tyler MacKnight and Trevor Hay, was featured in The Messenger (November 10, 2017).

ANNUAL COVCATH COLONEL CLASSIC VEX ROBOTICS TOURNAMENT – JANUARY 6TH CovCath will be hosting a VEX Robotics Tournament at CovCath on Saturday, January 6th, 2018. Up to 50 middle and high school teams from across the state (and possibly beyond) will be competing in this KY VEX State Qualifier. The event is free and open to the public. If you haven’t seen a robotics tournament, you’re missing an experience! More about VEX Robotics: • The VEX platform is aligned with the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) program and is the largest and fasting growing high school robotics competition in the world. Competitions are a great opportunity for students to develop skills in teamwork, leadership, and project management. • Teams of students design, build, and code robots each year to play a brand-new game. • Thousands of competition events are held annually in all 50 US states and over 40 countries. • Applying basic STEM concepts to a competitive atmosphere increases student engagement and makes lessons feel more “real”. SCHOOL NEWS

CCH STAFF MILESTONES AND RECOGNITION In October, the CCH National English Honor Society (NEHS) hosted a teacher and staff appreciation day to thank the entire staff at Covington Catholic for all that they do. The one constant throughout the years of CovCath is the dedication to Catholic education and the betterment of students the teachers and staff have for the students of Covington Catholic. The teachers and staff of Covington Catholic are unique in that many of them have spent most of their professional lives working to make CovCath the best school in Northern Kentucky by challenging their students to be the best Christian men they can be both in and out of the classroom. In fact, the average time spent

35+ years at CCH: Charlie Hartman, Bill Krumpelbeck, Bill Balskus

at CCH among 65 staff members is 14.94 years as well as 16% of staff spending over 25 years at CCH! Furthermore, eleven staff members are proud CCH alumni who now aim to give the current students the same experience they once had as CCH students, whether they graduated 53 years ago, or three, they all believe in the same mission at Covington Catholic. To put it simply, great teachers make for a great school, and Covington Catholic has been blessed with great teachers for many years. That commitment is illustrated by the impressive tenure and alumni among the CovCath staff, as shown here:

30+ years at CCH: Tim Haders, 25+ years at CCH: Carol Rasp, Diane Ruth, Lois Flaherty, Mike Guidugli Al Hertsenberg, Barb Hagedorn (Not pictured: Marti Davey)

11 Alumni are current staff members: Joshua McCoy, Joseph Gastenveld, Alex Ammerman, Nick Hovan, Rick Flesch, Tom Eckerle, Bill Snyder, Tom Arnold, Tony Barczak, Craig Cleveland (Not pictured: Jake Kleier)

10

We welcome seven new staff members at CovCath this year: • Mrs. Theresa Guard – Math Teacher • Ms. Emily Neubauer – English Teacher • Mr. Tom Rowe – STEM Teacher • Mr. Ron Verst – Religion Teacher • Mr. Jordan Landrum – IT Director • Mr. Gary Louderback – Maintenance Director • Mr. Jake Kleier – Marketing Assistant

SARAH PANZAU EVANS

2017 BACK THE BLUE

Sarah Panzau Evans visited CCH for the second time (she spoke here previously in 2012) to share lessons she learned following a tragic car accident in her early 20’s, related to her unfortunate choices, including driving under the influence of alcohol. She was authentic, courageous and inspirational for all in attendance.

The 2017 Back The Blue event, titled “History, Heritage, and A Spirit That Will Not Die,” was another big success for this annual evening of fun, fellowship and fundraising. With 310 in attendance (the third year with a sellout crowd), over $80,000 was raised to benefit tuition assistance and other needs, including $10,000 to purchase 4 Tech Tables in the new Student Center. The event was chaired by Valarie Brandenburg and Jennifer Lenihan and supported by over 50 volunteers.

FALL SPORTS RECAPS

Cross Country The CCH Cross-Country team had another fantastic season. With over 50 student-athletes involved, the team won numerous meets including the Franklin County Invitational, the Williamstown Invitational, the Diocese of Covington Championship, the Owensboro Fast Cats Classic, the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Championship, and the Regional Championship. The Regional Championship meet at Ryle was a very close meet with a thrilling finish as the Colonels defeated Cooper by 2 points and Conner by 8 points. The season concluded with a 10th place finish at the State Championship meet. Area coaches named Owen Piatt and Will Akin to 1st Team AllRegion; Nick Eten, Michael Kessans, and Will Tate to 2nd Team All-Region; and Aiden Smith All-Region Honorable Mention. Congratulations to the Cross-Country Colonels on a great season!

Soccer After reaching the state finals the past two seasons, the Soccer Colonels were looking to continue their winning ways. In order to prepare, the Colonels played the toughest regular season schedule of the Coach Robertson era. The Colonels finished the regular season 10-6-4. In the stretch of tough games, the Colonels went undefeated against Northern Kentucky teams. Unfortunately, in post season play they were eliminated in the Regional Semi-Finals to rival Highlands, losing in penalty kicks. Senior Noah Wulfeck led the team this year achieving state and local recognition. He was named 1st team All-State and AllRegion. The soccer team has a large group of varsity players returning next season to avenge this season’s early exit. In addition to the younger talent rolling through the program, the players will be ready to prove again they are a premier team in the state.

Golf The 2017 golf season for the Colonels had its highs and lows, but was overall a successful one for CCH. Led by six seniors and three juniors, the team started off the year strong by winning its second tournament of the season with a team score of 301 at the Oldham County Classic. Junior Lincoln Hammon also took home the Individual Tournament Title with a score of 71. The team ended the year strong after a Runner Up finish in the Regional Tournament at Summit Hills CC, by coming in 7th place in the KHSAA State Tournament. Junior Patrick Kennedy led the team with a t-24th finish at state just two weeks after winning the NKAC title. Senior Tyler Chandler finished t-39th at state followed by fellow seniors Josh Struck (t-56th), Ben Pieper (t-64th) and Paul Thelen (t-64th). It marks the end of a great four year run for the four seniors listed above as well as Evan Klein and Lucas Reynolds.

ADVANCEMENT

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT

JUDITH M. SEE Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,

As we approach the celebration of the birth of Christ, our Savior, we are reminded of the gifts we have been given. Your gifts make it possible for Covington Catholic to continue to strive for and achieve excellence in all four pillars of our mission – Spiritual, Academic, Social and Physical.

• Your gifts allow us to maintain the highest academic standards, while providing support to students who need assistance. • Your gifts allow us to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through religious instruction, the Celebration of the Mass, and by offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation. • Your gifts allow us to instill in our students the importance of community service – from tutoring Down Syndrome children, to working a Special Olympics soccer event, to collecting canned goods for marginalized citizens in our community, to funding student travel to the Nicaraguan mission. • Your gifts allow us to offer varsity sports as well as intramural sports programs in which over 400 of our students participate. • Your gifts allow us to fund capital projects that will serve generations of students and will keep our infrastructure and instruction relevant in a changing world. • Your gifts provide funding to help bridge the gap between what families can afford to pay and tuition costs, ensuring that any young man who wishes to attend Covington Catholic may have that opportunity. • Your gifts of prayer lift us up in our daily work.

Thank you for your gifts. On behalf of the Covington Catholic Advancement team, we wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a peaceful New Year. God’s blessings,

Judith M. See Director of Advancement

WAYS YOU CAN HELP COVING HIGH SCHOOL BEFORE DE Make your Annual Appeal Gift The Annual Appeal is vital to our students and school for a number of reasons: 1. A nnual Appeal gifts support the financial assistance program to help one in six CovCath students bridge the gap between what their families can afford to pay and tuition costs.

2. Y our gift helps alleviate budget shortfalls by allowing the school to utilize funds that would otherwise be earmarked for tuition assistance, for important purposes such as teaching and learning enhancements.

3. Students receiving tuition assistance participate in the Work Study Program, helping with school tasks. The Work Study Program would not be possible without the Annual Appeal.

Give to the Capital Campaign

Please see Page 19 for the current needs.

Create an Endowed Scholarship Endowments are special gifts, made in your name or in honor or memory of someone. A minimum $10,000 gift or pledge is required and can be fulfilled over a period of up to five years. Once the fund reaches $10,000, and interest is accrued over a period of one year, five percent of the interest is awarded as a scholarship to a deserving student. Endowed scholarships are a great investment in the future of individual students, and will help sustain Catholic education at Covington Catholic in perpetuity.

Giving is Easy Simply use the reply envelope included with this issue of the Jour 16

GTON CATHOLIC ECEMBER 31 Leave a Legacy Including Covington Catholic in your will is a wonderful way to leave your legacy, while providing support for future generations of students. Please contact Director of Advancement Judy See at 859-448-2247 or email at jsee@covcath. org for more information.

Consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution If you have reached the age of 701/2, you may want to consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution (“QCD”) from your individual retirement account, which allows tax free treatment of IRA distributions, including required minimum distributions. Specifically, QCDs permit a donor to exclude from income yearly transfers up to $100,000 to a qualified charity. With a QCD, you must make your gift directly from your IRA to a qualified charity like Covington Catholic High School. By excluding the IRA distribution from income, a QCD provides a tax benefit to both itemizers and non-itemizers. For example, a QCD could help prevent the Alternative Minimum Tax and an increase in Medicare premiums, as well as reducing the amount of Social Security benefits subject to tax. For more information, contact your tax advisor or call Director of Advancement Judy See at 859-448-2247 or email jsee@covcath.org. In recent years, several of our donors were able to benefit from QCDs, while providing much needed support to Covington Catholic High School.

Recurring Giving Whether you are a seasoned donor or a young alumnus, recurring giving may be right for you. Recurring giving is an easy, automatic way to support CovCath. For example, if you typically make a $1,200 pledge to the annual appeal, you can set up a monthly recurring gift of $100, eliminating pledge reminders. Likewise, a young alumnus on a limited budget might wish to set up a monthly recurring gift of $10, bringing their annual gift to $120. You can set up a monthly recurring gift by going to covcath.org/annualappeal and selecting the ‘Donate Now’ button or simply use the enclosed envelope. CovCath will automatically deduct your monthly gifts from the account you provide. You can stop or adjust your monthly gift anytime by contacting the CCH Advancement Office at 859-448-2247.

THREE NEW ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED In August, we were proud to welcome members of the Tom and Patsy Franxman family to our All-School Liturgy after which we announced the Thomas L. Franxman Memorial Scholarship. Tom (Class of 1959) passed away suddenly in December of 2016. He and Patsy were members of St. Benedict Church and had three sons and three daughters. They were loyal and generous in their support of Covington Catholic High School. Tom was remembered for his great love for our beloved faith and for Catholic school education. Family and friends came together to provide the funding to make the scholarship possible. This scholarship will ensure that Tom’s love for Catholic education will continue to touch future generations of students. In May of 2017, Jack and Carrie Brueggemann established the Dr. Carl and Carol Brueggemann Endowed Scholarship Fund. Jack is a graduate of the Class of 1949 and he and Carrie have been long-time supporters of Covington Catholic, giving generously of their time, talent and treasure. Jack, also known as “Doc,” served on the 2013 Capital Campaign Steering Committee, was Chairman of the Score Committee, is a member of the CCH Hall of Fame and served as Team Doctor for six State Championship football teams. Jack and Carrie have a deep love for the school and in his words “I have received more than I could ever give back.” Jack is a legend here at CCH and he and Carrie’s legacy will live on forever through this scholarship. When John “Jack” Schepman was asked why he wanted to establish an endowed scholarship at Covington Catholic High School, Jack thoughtfully answered “This is where it all started.” Jack graduated from Cov Cath in 1958. Where it all started was in Jack’s Junior Chemistry Class. Jack credits a very engaging instructor for his love of chemistry. He also enjoyed Senior Physics. After college, Jack went on to a 33-year career at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a Chemist. Margie was instrumental in the decision to establish the scholarship, but added “it’s all about Jack.” She wanted to honor Jack’s legacy at the school, while helping current students. Jack and Margie are active parishioners at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky, where Jack sings in the Choir. The Margaret C. and John B. Schepman Scholarship was announced after the All-School Liturgy on November 2. Jack shared his favorite quote with the students, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” Vince Lombardi. Well said!

Endowment Gifts are a wonderful way to give back to the Covington Catholic community in your honor or in honor of a loved one. For more information on Endowment Gifts, contact Judy See at (859) 448-2269 or jsee@covcath.org.

DAVID DIEDRICH (1952 – 2016): A LASTING LEGACY David Diedrich, Class of 1970, was a hard-working teenager who graduated from Covington Catholic High School a year early so that he could start college. He worked as a successful CPA in Arizona. In his free time, he loved to play tennis and vacation in Hawaii. His powerful personality touched so many people’s lives along the way with his sharp wit, sound advice and gift of gab. He wanted to help others in life. He was struck down with disabling physical injuries in the prime of his life. Over the years, he stayed in touch with classmate Jim Cahill and Development Director Sue

Finke. Both recall thoughtful and engaging conversations with David. He was especially interested in gift and estate planning. When David passed onto eternal life in August of 2016, he left a generous portion of his estate to the David Diedrich Endowed Scholarship Fund, which he had established. We are grateful for David and for this generous gift to our students, which will allow his legacy to live on in perpetuity. Some information gathered from David Diedrich obituary, www.legacy.com. FROM THE ALUMNI DIRECTOR

ALEX AMMERMAN ’10 CCH Alumni, Parents, and Friends, As we draw to close another season of class reunions, the community feeling at Covington Catholic has never been stronger. All Colonels, past and present, are enjoying the successes of Covington Catholic High School, and coming together during times of need. While there are many examples that highlight these sentiments, three key moments from this fall come to mind as I reflect on our recent activities. The 50th Anniversary of CCH Football saw alumni come back to Park Hills from all over the country, including from as far away as Los Angeles. Whether it were the members of the first football team from 1967 or the members of the last state champion football team from 2006, all Colonels, enjoyed the night and reminisced over the past 50 years. All involved were able to reunite, share stories and watch the current team carry on the Colonel tradition of football excellence. The Colonel Crazy Day of Giving saw alumni, students, family, and friends come together to support Covington Catholic, as well as a local non-profit organization, Be Concerned. Donations were made by alumni who attended from every CCH era. Whether it was an alum from the class of 1947 who attended CCH when it was located in Downtown Covington at Mother of God or Colonels who attended both the “old” school and the “new school” buildings, each donation was impactful. The spirit of giving shared by all was reflective of the values that were instilled in each of us at CCH and in one day, we collectively raised over $59,000. Finally, and perhaps most poignantly, the Colonel Community also recently came together for the Annual Memorial Mass, where we recognized all of our Colonels who have passed away. This is a special day of remembrance, reflection and reverence that connects all of us Colonels in Mass. All Colonels, whether from the first graduating class in 1929, or the current freshman class of 2021, came together with alumni and their families to remember their loved ones through prayer and participation in Mass. These three occasions, while very special, are only a few of the many examples of all of the great things occurring on a regular basis at CCH. While we continue to expand upon our campus and make changes to our physical buildings, Covington Catholic High School can still be called “home” to over 8,500 alumni. Whether you come back to CCH to check out the new additions or ongoing construction, or just come back to find your picture on the wall with your graduating class, you are always welcome back to Covington Catholic. GO COLONELS!

The City of Covington proclaimed “Kenney Shields Day” on Saturday, August 26, 2017, honoring the longtime basketball coach, who grew up in Covington, worked for the city recreation department and helped conduct youth basketball leagues at Covington Turners Hall for more than 30 years. Shields compiled a 766-427 record coaching high school and college basketball in Northern Kentucky during his 39-year career, including as the coach of the Northern Kentucky University Norse. He took NKU teams to the NCAA Division II national championship games in 1996 and 1997. He retired from NKU in 2004 with a 306-170 record in 16 seasons. He recently published a book, Nothing More, Nothing Less, Nothing Else, about his life and coaching accomplishments. He often told his players: “Go out and do your best … nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.” A portion of the money from book sales will go to the Kenney Shields Scholarship Fund that was established at NKU for men’s basketball players.
