News One of the most beautiful symbols of the city of Vukovar, the Baroque Eltz castle, has recently opened its gates after years of refurbishment. During the Homeland war and the aggression upon Vukovar and Croatia, the castle was completely destroyed. In the past few years it has been refurbished as part of the big project «Research, renovation and revitalization of the Ilok - Vukovar – Vučedol cultural heritage», worth over 200 million kunas. The renovation of a number of castles, the Baroque city centre, the construction of the Archeological- tourist park Vučedol, with the Museum of Vučedol culture and the renovation of the historical town core and the Odescalchi castle in Ilok are also a part of the mentioned project.

The outer part of the Eltz castle, whose construction began in the middle of the 18th century and was finished at the beginning of the 20th century, is now open for visitors and sightseeing.

The inner part will be opened next summer and will serve as a new museum-exhibition space of the Vukovar city museum. The whole complex of the castle encircles four Baroque country houses, a string of buildings, the chapel of St. Rok and an orange grove in the park.

The Scandinavian air carrier SAS will be introducing five new lines towards Croatia into their summer flight schedule this year. From 25 March, SAS will be connection Stockholm and Dubrovnik with two to three flights a week, Copenhagen and Split with one to three flights a week form 31 March and Bergen and Stavangar will be connected with Split once a week, starting on 25 June.

Copenhagen will also be connected with Dubrovnik twice a week, starting on the 4 July.

Along with SAS, flying from the north of Europe, from Helsinki to Dubrovnik to be precise, will be the Finnish national air-carrier Finnair, with the first flight on the 2 April and subsequently three flights per week. This will be the first regular line that Finnair is opening in Croatia.

Also from the beginning of June until the beginning of October, Jet2 will have flights between Newcastle and Dubrovnik every Saturday. This will be the fifth line of this British air carrier to the very south of Croatia.

British EasyJet, which already has seven existing lines towards Dubrovnik will be introducing an eighth line that will connect it with the Spanish capital Madrid. The first flight has been announced for 25 June, after which there will be three flights a week. More flights on the same route have also been annonced by the Spanish national air carrier Iberia.

Croatia Airlines will connect Zadar with Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris every Tuesday. from 1 May until the end of the summer flight schedule.

The Irish low budget air carrier Ryanair has announced that it will begin flying from Pula to Oslo-Rygge airport from 26 March. This is the fourth seasonal Ryanair line from Pula and the first one towards Scandinavia, after the airports Bruxelles-Charleroi, Frankfurt-Hahn and London-Stansted, and all together the fifteenth Ryanair line from Croatian airports. During the summer season Ryanair also flies from Osijek, Rijeka and Zadar.

German regional air carrier Eurowings will be connecting Zadar and Duesseldorf from 26 May until 22 September every Saturday.

Transavia, the Dutch low budget air carrier, has announced the introduction of six new lines, one of them towards Spilt.

The seasonal line between Split and Rotterdam should be launched on 7 July, and will operate twice a week. This will be the first regular Transavia line towards Split as well as the only connection between Rotterdam and Croatia.

Qatar air carrier, Qatar Airways, has also announced the introduction of a new line from its base in Dohi towards Zagreb this year.

New air lines reach Croatia in 2012

More flights towards Croatian airports have also been announced by the Scandinavian low budget air carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle, Condor and Smartwings.

British low budget air carrier Monarch Airlines has for this year announced three lines towards Dubrovnik. The pearl of the Adriatic will then have regular Monarch flights towards London (Gatwick), Birmingham and Manchester. The first to be launched will be the Dubrovnik-Manchester line, which will be operating from 27 March until 27 October.

Veliki Tabor - The symbol of Croatian Zagorje open for visitors

The castle Veliki Tabor near Desnići in Croatian Zagorje, one of the most significant monuments of profane architecture in continental Croatia and a cultural good of the highest category, has recently been re-opened for visitors.

The second phase of reconstruction of this noble town, a cultural pearl not just by Croatian but also by middle European standards, has thus been competed. In the past four years over 50 million kunas have been invested in the reconstruction of Veliki Tabor.

The reconstruction began in 2005 with the decoration of the castle porches and a complete renovation of the pentagon tower, popularly called ‘palas’, which represented the first phase of reconstruction that ended in 2007. The outer facades and all the rooftops of the castle were renovated in the second phase and the whole contructive sanation was also carried out. The next phase sees the renovation of the inside of the towers and the museum part of the castle.

Veliki Tabor is one of the rare late Middle Ages and Renaissance fortified towns of continental Croatia which have been preserved in their more or less original shape, noting varios changes throughout the centuries in its architecture. It was built by the noble family Rattkay during the 16th century, and was kept in their possesion all the way until 1793.

It is located on a hill in the picturesque surroundings of the Desnići area and is visible from afar. Its grand towers are a witness to a turbulent history of their makers and former inhabitants as well as their new role of an unmissable cultural tourist destination. The renovation of such a complex monument is very long and hard and after many years of restoration the oldest part – the pentagon tower has also been renovated.

Veliki Tabor is a noble town, which is, thanks to its numerous and valuable characteristics and especially because of its architecture, a monument of culture of the highest category.

The construction of Veliki Tabor began at the end of the middle ages and the beginning of the 16th century. Soon after the construction of the `palas`, an inner and outer Renaissance defense ring with towers was added to the late Gothic core. With this, Veliki Tabor was transformed into a Renaissance castle. With further additions during the 17th and 18th centuries it slowly transformed into a Baroque castle.

Today, Veliki Tabor is an interesting tourist destination with a number of organized cultural events. An attractive event called «Meideval camp (croat. tabor) under Tabor» is held every year and includes military camps being put up, competitions of strength in various medieval styles and a trade fair with an offer of various crafts and original gastronomy dishes prepared according to ancient recipes.

The castle Veliki Tabor is in the ownership of the Republic of Croatia and from 1993 it has been handed over for the use of the museum facility – the Musem of Croatian Zagorje.

The wittiest writer among chefs and the best chef among TV reporters, the author of the cult television gastro travel show «No Reservations», the world famous Anthony Bourdain, recently spent a few days in Istria. He also posted a number of photos from his experience on his personal Twitter profile @NoReservations.

His stay in Croatia began in Rovinj, where he was staying at the hotel Lone but he visited the whole of Istria. The first dish that he photographed was mussels `buzara` (mussels typically cooked in wine, olive oil, garlic and parsley) and following that a scampi `buzara` but this time with spaghetti.

Apart from the seafood menu he was fascinated by the beauty of Rovinj and the wonderful sunsets for which this town is well known.

The curiosity of this gastro adventurer then took him to the sea, where he fished for small sharks with the local fishermen during freezing winds, which he complained about on Twitter. His last tweet about Istira was about warming up with some honey snapps. He also tried truffles with the accompanying pasta, an octopuss cooked under a bell (‘ispod peke’) and oysters from the Lim Canal.

By his initial reactions he was mostly amazed by the Istrian white truffles. The famous travel writer and chef carried on his Croatian tour on the island of Pag, where he enjoyed the local delicaces – the amazing Pag cheese and lamb in Boškinac.

Bourdain also visited Skradin, where he tried and loved the Skradin risotto, which he described as a `traditional dish prepared by men only`.

He rated Croatian dishes as excellent and predicted that in ten years time Croatia will become a gastro world hit.

Bourdain`s world famous show «No Reservations» has 120 million fans around the world, and in its eighth season this number is still growing thanks to the very simple but interesting scenario, by which Anthony arrives in a foreign country in which he tries indigenous culinary specialties, gets to know local traditions and ingredients and then spices it all up with his recognizable cynical humor.

The filming in Croatia took eight days and the episode will be aired in March of this year.

Excelsa hotels receive the Domestic EuroCHRIE Industry Award 2011 Recently held in the hotel Excelsior in Dubrovnik, organized by the international organization EuroCHRIE (The European Council on Hotel, Restaurant & Institutional Education was the 29th EuroCHRIE conference with «Tourism and hotel management - originators of transition» as the main theme.

The hosts of the conference were the American College of Management and Technology (ACMT) and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

The conference gathered numerous international and domestic experts from the fields of tourism and business, which for a few days held workshops and discussions about innovations in tourism, trends in hotel management, the management and education of staff and gave many examples from their specific fields.

At the final gala dinner, held in Dubrovnik`s Revelin fort, awards for special accomplishments in tourism were handed out. An award for the domestic leader in tourism was given to the Excelsa hotels for their outstanding contribution to tourism and hotel management in Croatia. Excelsa hotels manage the Dubrovnik hotel Grand Villa Argentina, the hotels Croatia and Supetar in Cavtat and the hotel Odisej on Mljet.

EuroCHRIE is an international organization which gathers educators from prestige world tourism and hotel management colleges and employees in the tourism industry with a goal of connecting and upgrading knowledge in the fastest growing industry in the world.

Hotel Croatia in Cavtat is the winner of the gold medal awarded by the British tour operator Thomson Holidays for 2011, for excellence in the 4T+ category from the Thomson program which covers the whole world.

This valuable recognition of the largest British tour operator is based on results from the survey that was carried out about the satisfaction of guests, who rated not only the hotels accommodation facilities but also the destination itself, starting from the airport and the transfer to the agency representatives.

According to the survey of the guests who stayed at hotel Croatia, this year the hotel contents and service were rated with a better grade than expected in the 4T+ category.

The Thomson award for excellence marked the end of a successful season and a very rich autumn congress season at hotel Croatia. Even though the hotel is closed in the winter period, it carries on with its activities at tourism fairs and workshops.

Croatia is traditionally represented at the EIBTM fair in Barcelona and the WTM in London.

Hotel Croatia is an ideal place for congresses. It is a hotel of modern architecture and rich offers which stretches across a total surface of 83 000 square meters, from which the hotel building takes up 35 000 square meters and offers 480 rooms and seven apartments, which is altogether 980 beds.

The Gold Award in the 4T hotel category was received by Dubrovnik’s hotel Lapad. The hotel was built in 1912 on the peninsula Lapad and was called Bijeli Dvorac (White Castle).

After WWI its name was changed to Grand Hotel Lapad. It was completely renewed in 2008 when it was categorized with four stars. The hotel has 157 luxury rooms and six apartments.

UHPA an associate member of UNWTO The Croatian travel agency association (UHPA) had recently become an associate member of the World Tourism Association (UNWTO). The decision about UHPA joining UNWTO was made at the UNWTO council meeting and then confirmed at the General meeting held in the Republic of Korea. By this, UHPA became the first association that became a member of the WTO, joining the already accepted Croatian members – The Croatian Tourist Board, The Institute for Tourism, The Tourist Board of the Istria County, The Tourist Board of Mali Lošinj, The Zagreb Fair and Faculty of Economics in Zagreb.

«It is an honor that at this moment we can count on the UHPA, its knowledge and potential for collaboration while creating an ethical, responsible and healthy tourism sector», said Javier Blanco, the managing Director of the UNWTO Sector for associate members, in his welcoming letter.

UHPA today counts 212 regluar members – tourist agencies with 424 branches, which employ more than two thousand people. And there are also 99 associate members – hotels, rent-a-car companies, tourist boards, restaurants and other.

Tourists in Zagreb have recently been enabled to read all the information about tourist attractions throughout the city, in a very simple way - by using their `smart` phones. This is the newest presentation of the city sites with the help of new QR codes, which were set up on 26 locations in the wider city centre, on the same direction boards that point to the town`s attractions, at the initiative of the Tourist Board of Zagreb.

Zagreb has had its own code that leads to information on the website of the Tourist Board for a long time now and the newly created codes lead to information about tourist attractions. QR (Quick Response) code is a socalled cripted message (very similar to a bar code) which by simple `scanning` by the smartphone can lead to a lot of information. In order to obtain the information it is necessary to have a smartphone or another mobile device with a built in Android operating system. Install the free application for QR code reading and the info search about the desired locations can begin even if the user is located far away from it.

The use of this code has multiple advantages: it is the fastest way to open a website, find an interactive map, get all the necessary information and see photos and short video clips about each site.

Information by Zagreb`s QR code is currently available in seven languages – Croatian, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese, and it is also soon expected in Chinese.

Croatian campsites achieve record breaking accomplishments

Zagreb - Tourist attractions even more accessible

Last year Croatian campsites were in the 8th place in European camping, with a record 15.1 million overnight stays, which was 7% more than the year before. By capacity, they are in the10th place and by the price of camping in the 5th.

According to information from the recently held 5th Congress of Croatian Camping, the most overnight stays (8.1 million) were in Istrian camps. In the second and third place are the camps of the Primorje-Gorje and the Zadar County, with 3.1 and 1.6 million overnight stays respectively.

The tourists were mostly German with 32%, followed by Slovenians with 18%, the Dutch with 10%, the Italians and Austrians with 9% and the Czechs with 5%.

Last year two camps received the prestige international markings ‘Superplatz’ and ‘Leading camping’. They are camp Zaton near Zadar and camp Lanterna in Poreč, while 12 camps recieved the «Yellow Boards» for quality from the German auto club ADAC. According to data from the Croatian camping association there are 518 camps, of which 268 are in private households.

In one day these camps can accommodate 231 000 persons.

20 camps have a 4 star standard, which is 19%, while 58 have 3 stars, which is 35%.

The ones with the largest accommodation capacity, 68%, are located in Istria and Kavrner, while Dalmatia has the most number of campsites. Camping also represents 25.5% of the total tourist accommodation capacities in Croatia in which 25% of overall overnight stays are counted.

Dubrovnik receives the autor of Traveloscope The pearl of the Adriatic was recently visited by American journalist Jospeh Rosendo who has successfully been making documentaries about travel, foreign cultures and gastronomy for the past 25 years. The seafood restaurant Proto introduced him to the richness of Dubrovnik`s gastronomy. He talked about the oysters from Ston, mussels, white fish and unforgettable wines Malvazija and Plavac Mali.

The Travelscope documentaries have been awarded the Emmy and Telly Awards. Travelscope has been aired on 500 public networks in America and has been seen by over 250 million Americans.

Projects Agrokor has recently announced a 100 milion euro investment into a new tourist-recreation wellness-centre construction project in Daruvar. With this project, this area which is know by its health spa, the special hospital for medical rehabilitation and sports and wellness tourism in the Daruvar health centre, would become the leader in Croatian continental tourism.

The recreation wellness centre, in which 70 million euros will be invested, will be constructed in the first phase and the second phase envisages the building of the hotel and other facilities.

The facilities of the Daruvar spa will also be renewed: the central mud baths, Antun`s Spring, the Swiss Villa, Arkadija, the health arcade and the south part of the park. The total value of the investment is around 15 million kunas.

The town of Daruvar and Daruvar Spa have recently been accepted as members into the EHHTA, an association of European historical thermal cities.

Daruvar was awarded with a golden award last year in the category of the best presented Croatian continental towns with a health spa facility, while the Tourist Board Daruvar – Papuk won the international Golden Interstas 2011 award for the «exquisite contribution to tourism development».

This prestige international award has been given out to individuals, companies, tourism organisations, mayors and towns for the past 18 years by the European federation of tourism journalists and INTERSTAS. The Daruvar spa has also been well known for a long time by its thermal health centre, one of the most famous in Europe, where the great Roman emperors Hadrijan and Komod were treated.

Located in central Croatia, they can be reached within a few hours drive from any part of Croatia. The lovely parks, the spirit of times gone by which can be best felt through walks along the old bathing areas, the hotels and villas built in the 18th century, thermal water pools but also the modern wellness centre and excellent gastronomy are just some of the trumps of the Daruvar spa. The surrounding area is well known for good wines which can be tasted on the wine road.

An Eco Ethno village should soon arise in the SisakMoslavina County in Sunja. The renovation of around 30 original Moslavina houses, built up to 1930 and of extreme cultural value is predicted across 14 thousand square meters.

All the facilities will be renovated under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and the strictest renovation rules and then put into use as accommodation capacities of the highest category. In the centre of the village, a restaurant with 250 seating places which will serve only original Croatian dishes, will also be constructed.

This original Moslavina architecutre village has been imagined as a wellness oasis with a complete spa offer and investors are expecting their most frequent guests to be hunters and fishermen.

The opening of the village is planned for the spring of this year.

Dubrovnik has prepared numerous surprises for its guests this winter. Through the program «Dubrovnik – a town for all seasons» along with accommodation in Dubrovnik`s quality hotel facilities, tourists are offered tours of the city, walks in nature, wellness and spa treatments, trips to Ston and Konavle with folklore, and as a special scene and music treats numerous events have been prepared by the Dubrovnik summer festival organisation, which will be held in the reading room of the Sponza Palace.

These plays and events will be based on the hundreds of years old cultural-historical connections of Dubrovnik with France, Germany, Great Britain, and USA and will be performed in French, English and German. Dance parties with evergreen music will be held on Saturday nights at the hotel Hilton Imperial for `winter` guests.

Dubrovnik - The path of wines and flavours Based on the model of the most attractive and active Italian wine roads in Arezza (Tuscany) and Trentin (south Tirol), the Dubrovnik-Neretva county should also soon get its `Path of wines and flavours`.

This is a three million kuna worth project named Seenet - «The valorisation of local resources with a goal of rural tourism development in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County and the region of Herzegovina».

«Path of wines and flavours» will contain the traditional and contemporary way of life and will connect agriculture with tourism. Local producers and autonomy units will be informed about the project and products sold along the path will be noted as to create a database about the situation in the field.

Istria among the most desirable destinations in 2012

The prestigious magazine National Geographic Traveler has put Istria among the 20 most desirable destinations for 2012, in its winter edition.

Describing all the beauties of Croatia`s largest peninsula, Traveler magazine pointed out that Istria is a romantic place and should be experiencd as Tuscany with a Habsburg past.

The magazine states that Istria is becoming more and more famous for its truffles, Malmsey wines, olive oils produced in small town ruins on green hill tops. They also point out that Istria has more than 2000 miles of upkept cycling trails and Adriatic bays surrounded by the shade of pine trees, tempting one to go for a swim.

The text is illustrated with a photograph of Rovinj, which is compared to a Venetian island. They also mention the romantic bar Valentino, located on the rocks along the sea.

Along Istria, the magazine mentiones Belfast, Snaefellsnes on Iceland, Koh Lip on Thailand, Dresden, National park Tayrona in Columbia, Virunga volcanos in Africa, Costa Brava in Spain, Sonoma in California, Muskok in Ontario, Omaka, London, Gvatemala, New Zeland, Panama, Peru, Pittsburgh and Mongolia Also on the «Best of the World 2012» list are towns, countries and natural sites which, according to the popular magazine, deserve the title of the most desirable places on the planet which will inspire travellers with their various riches in 2012.

In a special edition of the most famous world travel guide Lonely Planet with an overview of the best world destinations and trends that should be visited in 2012, the island of Hvar came in 5th among the top 10 towns and regions, instead od Istria which came in second last year.

One of the most popular Croatian islands and the town that bears the same name are described as a top summer destination intended, before all, for those who are in search of some super fun during the season. Hvar is the «coolest place in Croatia», where during the summer one can enjoy crazy fun 24 hours a day. Apres beach parties, tanned bodies, great DJ`s, the sun and the beautiful sea is Hvar for those in search of entertainment.

Lonely planet is the most popular printed travel guide in the world, which has been published since 1973. In the beginning it recommended the cheapest forms of travel and today it recommends destinations, restaurants, hotels, hostels, large places as well as small villages, form the cheapest to the most expensive. Readers of the respected British daily paper The Guardian have put together a list of the best towns for Christmas shopping, but also for a holiday and entertainment. Split was enlisted among the top 12 world destinations where shopping is, as the British paper claims, a special pleasure.

«Shopping in the town centre is amazing. It is fantastic that one can shop and enjoy its beauty at the same time, completely free from traffic and car jams. The centre is full of shops, especailly the ones selling shoes and there is an excllent choice of cafes. The Riva (promenade) is wonderful and offers a view onto the palm trees and the blue sea», writes the Guardian and adds how it is a town full of small galleries. Stockholm, Newcastle, Leeds, Whitstable, Krakow, Salzburg, Istanbul, Kyoto, Kuala Lumpur, Marrakech and New York were also listed as ideal shopping destinations.

Daily Mail amazed by the beauty and diversity of Croatia British journalist Quentin Letts wrote an article in the Daily Mail in which he does not hide his unceasing enthusiasm when it comes to the Croatian coast on which he spent his summer holidays three times in the past four years. « Strange language, strange people and missing vowels give a special charm to this country. The crickets do not sing here, they shout. The sun hits you in the head and a bleating goat suddenly runs out of a bush. In front of us, at the end of a steep, narrow path, shines a small bay in which we hope to find a café and a pebbled beach», writes Letts for the Daily Mail.

The Dalmatian coast is like the Spanish coast in the seventies, with many unnamed villages with just a few houses. »I am very much enjoying the diversity of Croatia. The old village houses are stil romantic in their simplicity», says the author of the article and reveals how in the past four years he has spent three summers in Croatia, fighting the Croatian language.

Twice in Istria, he calls it a Shakespearean Illiria. Istira is Italianized, he says, but without the Latin showing off, so significantly more peaceful. He spent last summer in the far south of Croatia – on Pelješac Peninsula, where he was especially impressed by Trstenik.

«Croatia is charming because it is nothing like the fast, overcrowded, globalized Europe. It is still not fully modernized», writes Letts.

Even though he was in Trstenik in the middle of the season, there were not many tourists there. He pointed out how the prices in Croatia were significantly lower than in England.

«The Dalmatian coast is virgin like and it stretches for many kilometres. Most of the houses seem like they are from Napoleon times, even though there are a few newer ugly ones in Orebić, from where you can catch a ferry to Korčula», describes Letts, «Even though most of the continental European coast has been destroyed by money, it is a miracle how bulldozers and multinational hotel chains still have not destroyed this beautiful place», concludes the author.

«Croatia is so well preserved because of the fact that it was isolated during the time of Communism and later it fought off Serbian aggression in the war. Will this soon change?

After fighting for independence, the Croats could loose one more time, this time because of Bruxelles».

ADAC - Croatia third on the list of places best visited by car

The German auto club ADAC has put Croatia in third place on the list of places best visited by a personal vehicle in 2011. On the list of favourite camping destinations of German campers Croatia is behind Germany and Italy and in front of Austria and France. The previous year, Croatia was in the5th place.

Among European regions, the Germans found Istria to be the most popular region for camping this year, for which ADAC notes the most enquiries by its members and which in comparison to last years analyses has increased its advantage for 0.6%. Last year Istria was also the leader and this year it overtook Oberbayern, Suedtirol and Gardasee. ADAC, which counts 17 million members, bases its predictions for the following year on a sample from 1.7 million surveys about the choices of the best routes to the desired destination.

Readers of the British Sunday Times Travel Magazine have recently proclaimed Croatia the third best European destination with the most beautiful beaches, in the «European Beach Destination» category. First place was won by the south of Spain and second by the Greek islands, while Turkey and Croatia fought for third place, according to reader votes.

At the same time The Sunday Times Travel Magazine enlisted the island of Hvar among the top 25 world islands.

The Sunday Times Travel Magazine is a monthly magazine dedicated to travel, tourism, gastronomy and similar subjects and all with a signature of luxury. The magazine is printed in over 67 thousand copies and is the best selling British paper in the mentioned sector.

«The best in the world» awards in the categories for destinations, cities, hotels, tour operators and air carriers have been given out for almost ten years.

CNN - The best nudist beach is located in Croatia The Jerolim beach, on the island of the same name, which is part of the «amazing collection» from the archipelago of Hvar`s Pakleni islands, is first on CNN`s list of the best nudist destinations in the whole world.

The beach is described as a place of untouched nature, rocky coast and crystal blue sea. The beach is, as they say, equally popular among nudists and those who prefer to wear swimwear. Those in search of a little privacy are recommended to `dissappear` among pine forests and find secluded bays.

Jerolim became the first naturist island in Croatia, when in 1960 this type of tourism became popular. CNN stresses that Croatia is famous for its nudist beaches. The history of naturisam in Croatia owes a lot to King Edward VIII (who abdicated in 1936) and his wife Wallis Simpson, who asked and got permission to swim naked in the waters around the island of Rab. The announcing of Jerolim as the best nudist beach in the world is just one of the numerous recognitions received by Hvar and its islands. Lonely Planet proclaimed it one of the top five destinations for 2012, while the readers of Conde Nast chose it as the 8th best European island.

The hotels in Hvar also received praise from the world.

Hotel Adriana is one of the top 100 hotels, according to Fodor, and the Sunday Times proclaimed hotel Riva one of the best boutique hotels in Europe.

On CNN`s list, right after the Jerolim beach, is the beautiful Brazillian sandy beach Praia de Galheta in Santa Caterina, and in third place the beach close to the Italian Marine di Camerota. In fourth place are the luxury villas on Phuket in Thailand, while the nudist cruise along the Cote de Azur is in fifth place.

Three respectable Croatian wineries: Kozlović, Saints Hills and Krauthaker recently presented themselves at the elite gathering Decanter Fine Wine Encounter in London. This event is organized by one of the leading wine magazines in the world – Decanter, at which only the best one hundred wine makers from the whole world come together.

Croatian wines were tasted under the slogan «The Hidden Gems», with a lecture by Joanne Simon and Saša Špiranc. A special honor was given to our wines by Decanter`s editor and the legend of wine journalism Steven Spurrier, who tasted these Croatian wines.

Ktauthaker presented Graševina 2010 and Graševina TBA 2009, Kozlović offered Malvazija 2010 and Malvazija Santa Lucia 2008, while Saints Hills was represented in London

by Dingač 2009 and Nevin 2009.

Almost at the same time, the world`s most famous wine magazine published a long article entitled «The new wine order – the best wine makers of Eastern Europe», in which it describes the wine scene in Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia.

The leading wine makers got noticed, and Decanter audience received an insight into Croatian wines which received many high grades.

In the same edition of the magazine, there was also a guest columnist, the popular Oz Clark who wrote an article entitled «Istrian malvazija? Count on me…». Clark has visited Croatia twice in the past two years and is clearly satisfied with the offer. In the article he mentiones Graševina as the dominant sort but also praises Dalmatian and Istrian wines. He singled out malvazija, which could be, as he claims, what Sauvignon is for New Zeland and at the same time puts it neck to neck with the Italian Pinot Grigio.

The cheese Žigljen from Pag, a hard cheese made from a mixture of cow and sheep milk, which is produced by the famous dairy Gligor in Pag, has recently received a big international award. Žigljen was chosen among the 50 best cheeses in the world and won the «super gold medal» for 2011 at the British World Cheese Awards. Žigljen has a slightly spicey flavour and characteristic aroma and it takes three to six months to fully mature. The Gligor dairy returned home with a gold and bronze medal for its Pag cheese.

A gold medal was also won by Vindija`s cheese Caprilo, while the Pag dairy received silver medals for all four of their cheeses: Mediteraneo, Pag Cheese, Pramenko and Dalmatinac.

This year`s competition of the best dairies of the world gathered over 2500 producers of cheese from more than 30 countries and they were all graded by a jury of 200 judges. The French cheese Ossau Iraty from the famous Agour dairy was chosen as the best cheese in the world this year. This is the second time after 2006 that it has won this prestigious award.

Included in the Flos Oleia 2012 edition, a guide for the best virgin olive oils are 43 Istrian and four Dalmatian olive oil producers. 42 countries from five continents are represented in this publication. Italy has the most included producers, France has 12, Greece as one of the largest producers has only four while Croatia has 49 in total. This year Istria has enlarged the number of included producers by four labels and is once again the second region in the world, after Italian Tuscany.

Investments Plava Laguna, a company that has been doing business for over half a century and is constantly growing, has refreshed its identity in the further promotion of Poreč as a world famous tourist destination. As part of its new branding, Plava Laguna has become Laguna Poreč. It presents its resorts as sub-brands, each with a specific position: Plava Laguna Resort offers a peaceful vacation on the wonderful coast, Zelena Laguna Resort is a place of exciting events and active holidays in natural landscapes, while the capacities in the northern part of Poreč are gathered under the name Materada Area.

Laguna Poreč has begun the renovation of the Poreč hotel Parentium with which its category will be raised to fourplus stars.

According to initial predictions, the price of the hotel reconstruction will be more than 17 million euros in total.

The renovated hotel will have 269 rooms, a hundred less than it has today, which will surpass the standard necessary for five stars and all the necessary facilities needed for business all year round – wellness, spa, fitness, an indoor pool, a congress centre, three restaurants…As part of the investment, which could be finalized this year, another outoor pool will be built and the beach will be decorated accordingly. The hotel will then be re-named Laguna Parentium.

During the summer season Laguna Poreč is able to accommodate more than 20 000 tourists in its 12 hotels, four apartment resorts and a camp.

Introducing Located in the north of the Istrian peninsula, between Oprtalj and Grožnjan, on a 240 m high hill is Završje, a picturesque small town which was in the past surrounded by double walls. They are still partly visible and had two gates, of which only one is still recognizable today.

Above them is the ancient coat of arms of the Contarini family that ruled this feud for three centuries.

A small stone paved streed leads to an elevation with an ancient church of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a bell tower.

The church has a round apse and a portal with a pointed arch with the year 1879, when it was last reconstructed. It was built in the 16th century and renovated in 1634, after which only two altars remained, as opposed to the previous four. It had silver lighters and candle holders from the 18th century and a magnificent cup with sparkling medalions from 1476.

The church sold it at the end of the 18th century and it ended up in the Rotschild collection, which is today located in the Louvre. The Gothic monstrance originates from 1849, and shows the Virgin Mary, St. John the Evangelist and Christ coming out of his tomb.

Next to the church there is a 22 m high Romanic bell tower, located at the highest point of the high hill. The bell tower which was occupied by guards and watchmen in the past is specific by the fact that it does not end with a pyramid, but with a flat roof from which arise sharp bastions.

An equisite view stretched from the top towards the horizon so the enemy could not come near the town without being noticed. The bell tower leans 40 cm to the north and because of that it was named the Leaning tower. It has seven wall chaplets and near the top, just under the guard house, there is a bell room.

Built in front of the north gate of Završje was the large church of St. John and Paul, a new parish church which was renovated in 1792. It has a rounded apse, five altars and is richly decorated. The altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary was donated to the church in 1972 by nobleman Besenghi. Towards the valley, before the preserved gates, there is a church from 1556 dedicated to St. Rok, and about a kilometre to the north, a cemetary with the church of St.Andrew.

Završje - A pearl of the Istrian inland

The pre Roman object that have been discovered as well as the Roman tombs and signs are the Proof that Završje was inhabited many centuries ago. Supposed traces of the first consul road that ran through the inland of Istria have also been found.

Along it, a tomb stone, on which various historical figures are named, was discovered in 1885.

The ancient name of the medieval town is held in the Italian form – Piemonte. It was known under this name since 1102, when the Istrian marquise Ulrich II gave it to the Patriarch of Aquileia Today, the ancient core of Završje is a protected urban entirety, noted in the register of Croatia`s cultural goods.

Qaud rides – four wheel motorcycles or as they are popularly called AVT`s (All Terrain Vehicles) are becoming a more and more popular type of entertainment among the urban youth. And when this is done in a perfect ambience it is an experience for all the senses! In Gorski kotar, in Fužine to be precise, they have thought up a two day program during which participants can take part in the basic or advanced type of program, depending on their driving experience.

There are six different routes along vrious types of roads.

For those less experienced, there is panoramic sightseeing along previously aranged routes, accompanied by an experienced instructor, while more experienced drivers can have independent rides, with orientation according to GPS devices in the quad bikes.

Riders can view the beautiful forests of Fužine, the Lokvarka cave, the Park forest Golubinjak, the Devil`s passage and Fužine, a place with a long mining tradition which originates from the 17th century when iron minerals were dug up there.

This is how this place got its name – the procedure was called fužinarstvo, from the German phrase fusioniren. But Fužine also have a long tourism tradition. Passing through this place was the ancient Karolina road (from 1737) so even in those times there were resting places along it, while later, in the 19th century there were organized trips to Fužine from Rijeka, Sušak and other coastal towns. The first organized trip of that kind was noted in 1874.

The fact that it lays on three lakes- Bajer, Lepenica and Potkoš, gives Fužine a special charm. The participants of the ATV weekend usually stay in hotel Bitoraj. The hotel is located in the very centre of Fužine. It was completely renovated in 2007 and offers top comodity and a large choice of indigenous local dishes.

Apart from Fužine, the participants of the ATV safari can ride their quads to Ogulin, which is 35 km away, where there are also numerous sites to be seen.

The modern tourist offer has introduced the term «unplugged vacation», which means a holiday in places without any telecommunication signals, meaning no mobile phones, internet and other miracles of modern technology.

Some of these «unplugged» places are located for example in Alaska, on the Rocky Mountains in the USA, on the Carribean island Anguilla, in Mongolia or a desert oasis in Marocco.

Croatia also has special places like these. Before all, these are small far away islands turned towards the open sea, then the National park Risnjak and some of its areas that hold no signal. Accommodation can be found there in mountaineering huts just under the very peak of Risnjak.

Velebit also offers accommodation where there is no danger of modern technology.

Certain rural areas of Banovina, Slavonia and Podravina are still out of the digital signal’s reach and by this also belong to the category of potential destinations in Croatia for the development of the more and more popular form of «unplugged» tourism.

«Unplugged vacation» in Croatia

Green Point is the name of Zagreb`s first healthy fast food restaurant. Lovers of fast food who want to enjoy a healthy quick bite can do so in Varšavska Street, where there is a variety of meatless burgers on offer. There are various soy and seitan burgers, sandwiches and sausages, the aioli sauce is offered instead of mayonaisse and fresh tomato puree instead of ketchup.

Seasonal vegetables are also on offer, as well as the Arabic falafel, fried apples and bananas, homemade fruit shakes with honey, cous-cous, vegetable tortillas and hemp steak. At the Green point, Himalayan salt is used in food preparation.

To make the dishes at Green Point more tasty and attractive to people who are not attracted by vegetarian cuisine, the owners have hired a top chef, Branko Ognjenović.

The Salaj family estate in Grabovica near Čazma has been attracting the public`s attention for years by the way they decorate their house and estate, which has been proclaimed the best decorated twice (in 2004 and 2005) in the ‘I love Croatia – the Green Flower’ campaign.

During the holidays their estate is lit with thousands of colorful lamps which create a rich, idyllic atmosphere for each visitor. The Christmas manger and the decorated surroundings give an unforgettable feeling of a real Christmas story.

Tens of thousands of people visit the Salaj family estate each winter. The electricity bill which the family recieves each January comes up to tens of thousands of kunas, but they do not care about this because they find pleasure in offering their visitors an unforgettable Chistmans experience.

The owner, Zlatko Salaj, decorated the first tree 20 years ago, and since then every Christmas he decorated a few more.

His love and passion for Christmas lights and atmosphere resulted in the project `A Christmas story from Čazma` which was launched in 2005 and has become a tourist brand of the area.

Every year the Salaj family decorates the estate with a larger number of lamps and lights which make a unique lighting performance. This year the estate was decorated with a record 1.1 million lights, put on plants, wooden huts, bridges and other objects on the estate, which creates an oasis of light and a unique atmosphere. Many lamps are put up in a way to create certain shapes, so it is possible to see raindeer with a slay and a snowman. To make the atmosphere complete, traditional Christmas songs are played and there are also stands with a catering offer.

This unique attraction can be visited until 8 January.

Makarska during winter time
