Dear Parents and Jieminites, 2022 has been an exciting and fulfilling year. After 2 years of living with all excited with the many opportunities for us to expand our activities and programmes A big thank you to all parents and guardians for your support and confidence in partnering with our staff to create learning opportunities and striving to create meaningful learning experiences for our beloved Jieminites.
I am sure our Jieminites welcomed the return of cohort activities, learning journeys and being able to participate more actively in Sports and Games. Not to forget, our performers had the opportunity to return to stage, proudly showcasing their talent at the Singapore Youth Festival as well as charming their schoolmates with performances at our school’s National Day Celebrations, Teachers’ Day Concert and many more school-based events.
We are proud to present this e-book that captures the essence of our school experiences in 2022. We’re confident that our Jieminites, guided by our school values of Responsibility, Respect, Resilience, Humility and Care, have grown in character and maturity. Let us all continue to live up to the school’s motto “Strive to Succeed” as we bring out the best in our Jieminites!
Jiemin’s academic programme is framed around Show, Experience and Achieve. In Show, teachers explore pedagogies to bring about effective and engaging lessons for our Jieminites. We recognize that Jieminites learn at different pace in different subjects, hence differentiation is a key adoption in our programmes and instructions to cater to the different learning pace of our Jieminites.
It is important for children to experience the joy of learning and to be presented with opportunities to express creativity. In Experience, teachers designed activities and programmes to enrich and inject fun into learning. You will be able to see many of such examples in the section Jieminites’ Schooling Journey beyond the classroom.
Finally, assessment within Achieve is a systemic, on-going and iterative process of monitoring one's learning. It provides Jieminites, teachers and parents with feedback and affords opportunities for reflection. Jieminites will have the opportunity to work on tasks such as oral presentations and miniprojects as part of Assessment for Learning. These tasks will provide opportunities for our Jieminites to reinforce their learning and hone their knowledge and skills.
During the Covid period, Jiemin has strived to provide quality learning experiences for our Jieminites. Throughout this e-book, you will catch glimpses of these vibrant learning experiences and Jieminites’ inquisitive minds at work. With the lifting of most covid restrictions, we are very excited to continue to fan the flames of wonder in our Jieminites and to keep their hearts ignited for learning.
- Ms Joy Wong, Vice PrincipalIn Jiemin, we aim at providing all our Jieminites with a holistic education that encourages each of them to learn and develop a curiosity that goes beyond their learning in the classroom. Holistic development in our Jieminites essentially means that they are developed intellectually, mentally, physically, and emotionally, equipped with social abilities in them that they are capable of facing the demands and challenges of their daily life in school and beyond.
Through their involvement in programmes and activities like Co-curricular Activities (CCAs), Learning Journeys (LJs), Arts Presentations, Community involvement and performances, competitions, and camps, each Jieminite can discover and nuture his/her strengths and interests. Such activities reinforce the cultivation of important values, leadership, and life skills, and realise their full potential to seize learning opportunities for their development, lifelong experience, and the future. Opportunities and platforms given to them in these areas empower Jieminites to take responsibility for the development of their abilities, hand in hand, with their academic pursue. Essential language, Science and Mathematical concepts, and social skills are used that reinforce experiential learning with hands-on educational experiences in fun and meaningful ways. Looking at the interconnectedness of all the individual subjects working together beyond the classroom, holistic development of each Jieminite in the school is an integrated and a comprehensive one, that consider a multidimensional aspect of wellness of an ideal Jieminite.
- Ms Nur Fatimah, Vice PrincipalThe Applied Learning Programme (ALP) Interdisciplinary Project Work (IPW) is a collaboration between the English and Mother Tongue Departments. The programme aims to provide opportunities for our Jieminites to be aware of the current global issues like environmental sustainability and conservation, in promoting self-directed learning, and responsibility towards nature and the environment around them.
Starting with our youngest Jieminites in Primary 1 and the theme ‘Endangered Animals’, they had a chance to view the animals from their classrooms through an online virtual tour. This unique and interactive online tour hosted by the Singapore Zoo expose our Jieminites to the unique characteristics of the selected animals. They learned how these animals depend on their environment to survive and how humans can avoid creating harm to the animals and their natural habitats. Incorporating the school’s value of Care, they were made aware of some of the humans’ actions that could lead to these animals becoming endangered.
As a follow-up, these youngest Jieminites demonstrated their learning by presenting the information they gathered through Show-and-Tell sessions during their English and Mother Tongue lessons. They also reflected on their roles on how they can help to avoid these animals from extinction!
Our Primary 2 Jieminites took part in the Sustainable Conservation-Food Wastage programme where they had the opportunity to learn the characteristics and functions of the wet markets in Singapore. They also learn about the variety of food items sold there in alignment to the lessons on this during their English and Mother Tongue classes. As part of experiential learning for the programme, Jieminites had the chance to role play as wet market stall holders and the customers. They also had the opportunity to creatively create local delicacies like chicken rice, prata, nasi lemak and thosai using the craft materials provided. Their learning in food conservation was then reinforced through the presentation that they did on the consequences of food wastage, and also sharing their learning experiences with their classmates in class, and at home with their family members.
As writing is one of the key language skills in the English and Mother Tongue curriculum, the book “JPS Budding Writers”, a compilation of Jieminites’ creative writing in the 4 languages was conceptualised. This compilation of stories provides a platform for our Jieminites, not only to recognise their flair of creative writing but also to showcase their literacy works to their fellow schoolmates. Through the stories that they wrote, and the characterisation presented, the value of empathy was instilled in them, as writers and the readers of their stories.
As Jieminites freely articulate their thoughts and ideas in their stories, the process helps to broaden their vocabulary and mastery of their writing skills. This has motivated and encouraged many of our Jieminites to strive in becoming confident writers. This book has also been used in the classrooms as a reading and teaching resource for English and Mother Tongue lessons where content ideas for composition writing in class is being developed. This rich repository benefits Jieminites in their planning process of their writing pieces in many ways. With the love for reading and writing instilled, Jieminites will become proficient users of both English and their Mother Tongue Languages.

Facilitator leading an ice-breaking session for Jieminites to learn more about one another Reflection to learn more about leadership Building a structure from scratch? BringIn Jiemin, we believe that every Jieminite is a leader, being responsible in acquiring self-mastery in managing themselves well. Jieminites are hence leaders in their own rights, being able to make a positive difference in his/her own growth and development. To support our Jieminites in this area, the school maps out its 3 main leadership developmental stages for all Jieminites: “A Leader in Me” (P1-P2), ‘To Lead by Example’ (P3 and P4) and ‘To Lead is to Serve” (P5 and P6) Global Learners, Discerning Citizens.
Over the 6 years, each Jieminite receives leadership training in the various stages to develop their potential and opportunities, and platforms are provided for them to apply what they have learnt. Leadership responsibilities like Classroom Leadership positions and leadership opportunities at a wider scope beyond the classroom like CCA leaders, Peers Support Leaders and appointment to the Prefectorial Board are also offered to our Jieminites. They not only contribute in the classroom by helping their peers and teachers, but also in organizing school wide events like National Day and Teachers' Day celebration.
At the higher tier of the Student Leadership scale, selected Jieminites are appointed as Prefects through a selection process by their teachers. These Jieminites are selected based on their leadership qualities and ability to maintain a good balance between schoolwork, commitment to CCA, and duties as a Prefect.
The Prefects’ Investiture, an annual event where the school community celebrates and recognises the appointment of these Jieminites as our Student Leaders in the school. In 2022, the event was conducted during an online assembly where their contributions and appointment were showcased to the school in the respective classes.
During the ceremony, Mr Choong spoke on the importance of serving as leaders, leading the rest of the Jieminites in the school in various areas. The formal appointment of the EXCO Prefects was also done by Mr Choong and the Vice-Principals with the presentation of badges in the respective classes of these student leaders. The ceremony was then concluded with our newly appointed Head Prefect, Kumarathasan Lakshana from Primary 5 Care, on behalf of all the Student Leaders, addressing their commitment to lead and be role models to all Jieminites, and thanking all teachers on their guidance and support on behalf of the Prefectorial Board.
In Jiemin, we believe that fostering a strong, caring and supportive peer relationship is important for the overall holistic growth of our Jieminites. To enhance the school’s effort in this area, selected Jieminites from Primary 3 onwards made up the school Peer Support Leaders. A series of trainings was conducted to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to better support their peers. They were also given authentic opportunities to apply these skills through various platforms, such as, cofacilitating class bonding activities and befriending new Jieminites in the school.
In advocating pro-social behaviours, the Primary 5 Peer Support Leaders came together to co-create a music video and performance during Children’s Day celebration, titled, ‘Kind Is Cool.’ This video hopes to influence all Jieminites to continue exhibiting pro-social behaviours which are considered ‘cool’ amongst them, as demonstrated in the music video.
Our school ushered in the Year of the Tiger with a vibrant celebration in the classroom. Even though the school had to adhere to the SMM guidelines at that time, it did not deter the Jieminites and teachers to be treated with a concert via Zoom. They were also engaged with various interesting cultural activities in the classroom where they learnt about the Chinese customs associated with the Lunar New Year. Jieminites were also greeted with well-wishes for the celebration by Mr Choong, Ms Fatimah and Ms Wong and presented each staff with a pair of mandarin oranges that signifies blessing and prosperity for the recipient.
It was really heartening to see our Jieminites of different races completing their craftwork activity together for the Lunar New Year.
Festive decorations were placed around the school compound to create a festive atmosphere for all Jieminites to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa. With the theme “RiangRaya@Jiemin”, Jieminites and the teachers put up songs and dance items to the vibrant tunes of the Hari Raya songs. These performances were enjoyed by all through the Hari Raya Puasa e-celebration that was held in the classroom.

On 1 September, feelings of gratitude, joy and warmth filled the air on Teachers’ Day. The celebration started with a fun-filled concert with performances, videos and games held in the school hall which was proudly organised by our very own Jieminite Student Leaders, the Prefects. After the concert, teachers and Jieminites continued the celebration in the classrooms through hands-on activities. Jieminites expressed their gratitude and appreciation to their teachers by making thankyou cards, heart-shaped origamis, and thank-you class banners collaboratively.
With the theme “Get Animated!”, the staff dressed up as cartoon characters for the afternoon’s High Tea after school. Everyone had great fun and laughter as the teachers and staff bonded to celebrate Teachers’ Day together this year, after a few years hiatus due to Covid-19.
On Children’s Day, the school celebrated the achievements of all our Jieminites who have braved through the Covid-19 with their positive attitude and continue to live their childhood vibrantly despite the pandemic. They have shown resilience and the ability to adapt to the changing environment, striving their best to overcome challenges in their daily endeavor. With the theme ‘The Best Of…’, the teachers put up a captivating performance, appreciating their hard work and perseverance, with the aim to inspire all our Jieminites to always be their best. Both Jieminites and the teachers had a really good time watching and cheering to the performances, from the popular K-pop songs to the mesmerising fairy tales themes. They were much delighted with the special appearance of Jiemin's very own Pikachu on the stage that became one of the highlights of the day!
“Together We Keep Singapore Strong” is the theme for Total Defence Day 2022. It emphasizes on the message that everyone can play a part to build a caring and cohesive society, to make Singapore stronger and more resilient. To make it more meaningful, the school invited a former Jieminite who is also one of the School Advisory Committee (SAC) member, Mr Jawahir, to share his thoughts and experiences in relation to the theme. Similar to some of the teachers who also shared on their experiences, collectively, they concurred to the significance of their role in contributing to the Singapore story of service, resilience and perseverance through the six pillars of National Defence, namely, Military, Civil, Social, Digital and Psychological Defence. Especially during the pandemic, many restlessly continued to don their uniforms as they served in the different forces in Singapore. While the lower primary Jieminites showed their appreciation by writing notes to the frontliners, the middle primary Jieminites reflected on how they can keep themselves safe in the digital space of modern technology that is widely used globally. The upper primary Jieminites took part in the various quizzes to test their understanding skills and knowledge on the Pillars of Defence.
International Friendship Day commemoration this year focusses on the theme of Singapore to sustain its efforts in building strong relationships with our neighbouring countries. With the theme “Singapore in Asia”, Jieminites learned and explored the spirit of friendship and collaboration between Singapore and countries in Asia like India, Philippines and Vietnam. Through the various classroom activities and quiz, Jieminites learnt about the diverse and colourful culture and traditions of these countries especially their contributions, as foreigners living, working, and studying in Singapore that contributed to its nation building since Singapore's independence. Heartfelt messages were featured on the school’s HeArt Board where several of our Jieminites who were from these Asian countries, shared their life experiences in Singapore, and their appreciation of being part of the different communities here.
During Racial Harmony Day commemoration, Primary 1 to 3 Jieminites watched a puppet show entitled “Perfect Harmony” in the school hall, that depicts the meaningful theme and message about friendships among the different races in Singapore. Simultaneously, the Primary 4 to 6 Jieminites watched a recorded performance online on “Together We Defend”, learning about how they can work together to maintain peace and harmony in Singapore. With the year’s Racial Harmony Day theme, “Our Multicultural Mosaic”, it reinforces one to reflect how each community in Singapore, while having their own personal space to express its own identity as part of the Singapore society, it also provided them with the platform to intertwine theirs with the others, creating a unique cultural diversity that characterizes what life in Singapore is all about.
To provide our Jieminites with more experiential learning on this, that week during the various recesses, they were provided with the opportunities to view the intricate miniatures that showcase the local customs and cultures of wedding ceremonies in Singapore through the loaning of the booths provided by the Singapore’s National Heritage Board (NHB). Jieminites also were delighted with the showcase of the traditional games, musical instruments, costumes, and food of the different races that were put up by the teachers.
To commemorate Singapore’s 57th Birthday, the National Education (NE) Show made a comeback to The Floating Platform@Marina Bay to much of everyone’s delight. Our Primary 5 Jieminites excitedly donned their red T-shirts and together with their teachers, as audience, they witnessed the celebration together with hundreds of students from other schools on Saturday, 2 July.
Waving their national flags excitedly, they sang the National Day theme song alongside with other evergreen national day and community songs.
