What Impact Will You Make?

D

ear JIBS students – new and old, when you read this, we will be far into the summer, closer to the start of the term, you will be preparing for coming to JIBS. Some of you for the first time, and some of you returning. I am myself starting my third year at JIBS this autumn. Although the job as Dean itself is no longer new for me, I am never bored. No week at JIBS is the same as the one before and the accomplishments of the JIBS faculty and students never cease to amaze me.

Jerker Moodysson Dean and Managing Director Jönköping International Business School

You will all have heard that JIBS was reaccredited by the international accreditation body EFMD, the EQUIS accreditation is secured for another five years. You might also have heard that the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) gave JIBS “high quality” in its evaluation for PhD programmes in Economics. These “wins” are in some ways taken for granted by many, but a lot of hard work has gone in to the processes and as Dean, I am very proud of the business school that I have the privilege of managing. And of course, nothing of this could be possible without our excellent students. You are our raison d’être. Incredible projects such as the E-ship Challenge, Spring Inspiration, NextStep, GoExchange, to mention a few, are also things we sometimes take for granted but that are in fact proof of the incredible force of nature that you, our students, are. So, thank you all. And to all our new students, welcome! I look forward to seeing what we can achieve together.

Welcome to the summer issue of JIBS United Magazine!

M

y name is Sylvie DellaBruna; a second-year student enrolled in the Marketing Management program here at JIBS. I am also an international student and have moved here from California, USA. This is my second semester as a project manager for JIBS United Magazine and it has been an amazing learning experience so far. I am so proud of the work that my team accomplished in the Spring semester and cannot wait to share this magazine with you. The theme for this magazine is “The Start of Something New. One of the reasons why we decided on this theme is because of the many new students joining us this year

from Sweden and many other countries around the world. New students, you will be starting your incredible journey here at JIBS this semester and we are happy to welcome you into JU and JIBS culture. JIBS United Magazine represents one of the many projects that are available to join under JSA; joining a project can open up an entire part of JIBS that you didn’t know would be available. Through these projects, you can meet new friends, become involved in student activities, and even help host student activities yourself. We look forward to meeting you and getting the chance to work with you in the future!

ready to start this new school year! For some of us, that means starting our second school year and diving deeper into our subject areas, and for others that means going on their study abroad. We wish everyone luck on their study abroad and hope that the third-year students will enjoy every moment of their new home for the coming months.

Another reason for choosing this theme is because all continuing students are coming back fresh from the summer,

Thank you from my entire team and me, we hope you enjoy this issue.

This is the start of something new guys! Take advantage of the moment and dive in. You will thank yourself later for taking hold of new opportunities in life. You regret one hundred percent of the chances you don’t take, so take them!

SURVIVING SURVIVING KICKOFF KICKOFF by Rebecca Larsson

What to Expect for Kickoff 2018

T

he end of summer is quickly approaching, but no need to get the summer blues. The 21 st of August will mark a very special day in your life as it is the first day of the JIBS Kickoff. I can assure you that it will be a week filled with new friendships, experiences and a lot of fun! For you to get a hint of what Kickoff is actually like, I interviewed two students who were involved in last year’s Kickoff. Martina Jonsson was a second-year student who took on the role as being a “fadder” and Iyad Chabiah was an excited “zero”.

12

Life as a Fadder with Martina Jonsson I first sat down with Martina, who was very excited to talk about her time as a fadder and what she enjoyed most.

She also gives a really important piece of advice when participating in a Kickoff, and continuing beyond.

“Looking back at being a fadder, I believe the most empowering moments were during the first days. Being responsible for everyone feeling safe and accepted while participating in activities; all laughing together - I love competing. I enjoyed watching the building of relationships and forming of friendships as the moments were lived.”

“Be 100% yourself. Ask questions. Don’t limit yourself to making friends within your program and be open to the new adventure you are about to experience throughout your education!” Martina also advises that students become advice in school projects, and thinks back on what she would do differently if she could be a zero again.

Martina was also delighted to reflect on her favorite activity during the Kickoff.

“I would have started looking at teams or projects to join in school more actively. I believe being involved in a project brings you to new people which consequentially will open doors you’d never thought of opening for yourself.”

“I must say dancing at AKA until sweat dripped from the ceiling brought most warmth to my heart. Everyone had such amazing ways to express their character through dancing.”

THIS OR THAT ? RIO or JUBEL? FADDER or ZERO? SITTNING or AKA? TEQUILA RACE or AFTER WORK BEER? PREPARTY or AFTERPARTY?

13

Life as a Zero with Iyad Chabiah It is important to sit down with not only someone who has been a fadder, but someone who is excited to talk about their time being a zero. I sat down with Iyad to see how he remembers his experience.

“In the beginning, it might feel a bit straining to go out, mingle, party and have fun all the time on daily basis but TRUST ME, it’s all worth it! So, my advice to the new zeros would be to have fun and try to enjoy every bit of this incredible experience. I encourage you to not miss out on any of the daily Kickoff activities (unless you’re extremely sick, there’s no excuse!). Be there on time and make the most out of your time with your fellow zeros because it will be one hell of a ride!”

Iyad first reflected about his favorite thing about being a zero, and his relationship with his fadders. “Being a zero was such a thrilling experience... pure euphoria! I felt like I was a part of something much bigger than just myself. It’s difficult to only mention one thing I enjoyed most about being a zero, but I would say probably being “pampered” by my fadders was rejoicing, so to speak!”

When I asked him if he would do anything differently if he were to be a zero again, Iyad not only reflected on his time as a zero, but as a fadder during the spring as well.

There are of course many activities during a Kickoff, and remembers the Pub Crawl as one of his favorite things to participate in. “The outdoor activities such as Night Missions, Beach Volleyball games and AKA parties were so much fun amusing. I also particularly enjoyed the Pub Crawl and playing beer pong... it was definitely one of the highlights of my Kickoff.”

“I actually had the opportunity to be a fadder for the last spring Kickoff yet somehow, I still felt like a zero when mingling with my new zeros. I am also a head fadder for the next fall Kickoff. As you can probably tell, my first ever Kickoff experience had a large impact on me, which is why I want to relive the whole experience again and again. I honestly still think that my first fall Kickoff was the best. I had a blast with my fellow “Incredibles” zeros and hardly missed out on anything. Maybe the only thing I would do differently is to take more crazy selfies with my zeros and fadders.”

Iyad went on to give some words of wisdom and pass on advice to any new zeros joining JU this fall.

THIS OR THAT ? RIO or JUBEL? OVERALLS or CASUAL WEAR? SITTNING or AKA? TEQUILA RACE or AFTER WORK BEER? PREPARTY or AFTERPARTY?

14

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE KICKOFF IN THREE WORDS?

Amazing, connecting, and energising.

Buzzing, exhilarating, and MFL (Memories for Life).

The first semester at Jönköping University by Beata Edlund

I

t is August, the beginning of fall and the air is still warm and even though a new semester is about to start we still enjoy those late summer evenings. But before school really starts it is time for an amazing kickoff. The kickoff is a great way to get to know new friends and get the opportunity to explore the city and Jönköping University. However, at the kickoff were the first time I got to meet Benedikt Czerny, we were in the same kickoff group and for this article, I decided to do an interview with him about his experience about the first semester at JIBS and find out his best tips to survive.

When it comes to the university he really likes the campus area that offers a lot of things like nice cafes and restaurants, a gym and different areas where you can study. Benedikt is a student at JIBS and he did the program International logistic and Supply chain management. What differs most from his university back home in Austria is clearly that at JIBS there is a lot more focus on group projects, presentations and company visits

”If you are not used to that, it is very different, but I believe it will prepare you better for the future”. Furthermore, what makes studying at JIBS great are the good teachers, helpful staff and there are a lot of students from different countries which contribute to a nice atmosphere.

The city Jönköping develops and grows all the time and with the help of Jönköping University, which is attracting a huge amount of students each year both international students and from Sweden. When Benedikt arrived to Jönköping his first impression of the city was that Jönköping is not the biggest city but it has all the things you want and need.

”Jönköping is great, especially with the lake, the beach and the city itself is beautiful”.

16

Since there is a lot to do except studying it may be hard to know if it is merely time-consuming or really a good experience. Benedikt is involved in the committee GoExchange where he is a project manager and he describes the work as ”even though it is a lot of work sometimes it is definitely worth it, you get to meet so many new students, you get more experienced of working in a team, it is good to have on your CV and an additional plus is that you receive abroad points”. It is a fun experience and since there are a lot of clubs and committees to join there will be no problem for you to find one that suits you as well.

The kickoff is a huge event here in Jönköping and it goes on for almost two weeks. I thought it was interesting to find out what kind of impression Benedikt had about it, since he is an international student and they do not have a kickoff like this in Austria. His first thoughts when thinking back to last fall were :

”the kickoff was lit, it was an amazing event and I had never experienced such a large event for new students starting school”.

Except committees and different clubs, the committees will throughout each semester organize special events and “sittnings” that all students can attend. Some you will need a ticket for and others are for free. A tip is to take the opportunity to go to these events, they will give you more insight in what the different clubs and committees do and it might be a great way to see if you want to join them. Then we also have the “sittnings” which are a fun event created by the Sexmästerierna, which are the students that are organizing the kickoff as well. These “sittnings” you do not want to miss. I have been to a few of them and you have a great time for sure, so bring your friends and get cozy in the queue and remember to be on time, you do not want to stand without a ticket.

We talked further about how the kickoff is the best place to make new friends and that he, just like me is still friends with a lot of people from the kickoff group. Benedikt’s best tips of surviving the kickoff are;

”if you are tired it is okay to take a day or two off to rest, and also to have some water between the drinks, then you are good to go”. However, the kickoff may be the start of a great semester but it is not the only thing that will happen throughout the year. You have a semester filled with studies, exams, events and friends.

17

They say the time at university is the best time in your life but it is not always fun, and at the end of each course there will be an exam waiting for you. Even though this can be a tough period you will manage and here are some tips from Benedikt;

”start in time and manage your time well, book group rooms ahead of time though a lot of students will be in school and study. And go to the wrap-up lectures, the teacher usually give you some tips for the exam”. Following this, you will have no problem with your exams and your study time will be great. Lastly, some things that have worked out well for Benedikt and made the semester go by easier are that he found a project group already in the beginning at the course and they work together in all of their courses, this makes the group projects more comfortable and fun. It is also important to balance your time okay, do other things than just studying, it is important to have fun as well and start in time with your assignments and exams,

”the sooner the better”.

Accommodation decisions: Where to live during your studies? by Nikola Kolev

M

any of us come to university with expectations and aspiration to spend the best time of our lives. Choosing the most convenient place to spend it may often be a struggle. I’ve experienced it rather well myself. Proximity to campus, social life and price are only some of the factors that influence our decision regarding our new home. Therefore, to help you make the best of your time here, I’ll share with you some fellow students’ opinions, as well as mine, of the accommodation options in Jönköping.

Råslätt With more than 400 students living in the Råslätt student area, it is the most popular accommodation in Jönköping. At first glance, I will not impress you with astonishing views nor proximity to the university campus. However, as soon as you arrive, you find out that it is only 12 minutes away by bus from campus, 5 minutes away from a big grocery store and it stands in the middle of a picturesque forestall area.

Interview: Bilal Javed

When it comes to the apartment, you get a combination of the privacy of having your own room and the experience of sharing the common areas with fellow students. And one of the best things is definitely Sockertoppen; a social common area with a big TV, pool table, table tennis and sauna among other things, all for free and exclusively for students. This makes it so easy to socialize and make friends from all over the world.

What made you choose this accommodation? I chose Råslätt as my first choice of accommodation because of the sheer number of students who live here. I was told by many people (including former students) that living in Råslätt is one of the best ways to experience the student life at JU!

20

Ekhagen With an astonishing view to Lake Vättern, Ekhagen offers you the possibility to live in your own apartment. You get to live in a room by yourself, with kitchen utensils and bathroom only for your disposal. It is well connected to the city center and you can easily access campus, apart from late hours when you will have to step up your time management game since there are not as many buses.

Name the two things you love most about your accommodation. The thing that I truly enjoy about this place is that it is right next to a forest. This gives me and my friends a convenient way to enjoy the outdoors. I also love how cheap it is, the low rent has saved me from filing for bankruptcy during my time in JU. Name something that can be improved in your accommodation. The accommodation is a good balance between quality and affordability; however, it’s not without its faults. The apartments here can definitely use some maintenance work for sure; the need for maintenance work depends on each individual apartment, so your mileage may vary. Who is it more convenient for, party-hard people or chill-seeking ones? It’s definitely for the type of person who enjoys socializing and to party on a regular basis. There’s always something happening in Råslätt at any given moment, so if you have no friends then moving here would be a great opportunity for you to finally make some! Rate your accommodation from 1-5.

21

Vilhemsro

people passing by and the fact that the lake and forest are so near. You can go and sit by the lake or just barbeque with friends outside the house.

Situated in another beautiful forestall area and very close to lake Vättern, Vilhemsro offers its inhabitants both the tranquility of the nature and the liveliness of student life. The kitchen and bathrooms are shared by the people living on the same floor, which makes you all feel like a big family. Interview: Isabel Clemente Våzquez

Name something that can be improved in your accommodation. The kitchens could be improved. Sometimes it is difficult to keep them clean as you share with other 7 or 8 people. Also, if a kitchen cannot find some utensils, they go to another kitchen and take it from there so it can be challenging to find the kitchenware you need to cook. Who is it more convenient for, party-hard people or chill-seeking ones? Vilhemsro is convenient for both actually, we have a big common room where you can hang out with your friends, party or play some games but you also have your private room where you can be if you want to spend some time alone, study or chill. In the surroundings, you also have some green spaces where you can chill and relax if you prefer.

What made you choose this accommodation? I chose the accommodation because I loved the area, initially I was in a different accommodation, Furan, but it was shut down. As I had to change, I decided to move to Vilhemsro because it is in the same area, there is a lot of nature and places to walk and it´s relatively near the city center.

Rate your accommodation from 1-5. Rating is a bit hard, I am very comfortable in my accommodation and I would not change it so I would give it a 5.

Name the two things you love most about your accommodation. The two things I love the most about Vilhemsro are the quietness you have there as there are barely any cars or loud

22

Delta house

the shoulder for being lucky to be here and being so close. I also love how close it is to all the essential places I need in my life. Like Nordic Wellness!

Located only 500 meters away from campus, Delta house is the place to be if you want to live on a walking distance from grocery stores, gyms, clubs etc. Similarly, to Vilhemsro, students there share a kitchen and a couple of bathrooms on the same floor.

Name something that can be improved in your accommodation. We all know that this place used to be an office! Unfortunately, it still looks like an office. Those walls are so thin that I can hear all the naughty noises you can imagine and I feel like I can just kick the wall and get into my dorm-mates’ room. Also, (directed to the accommodation office) PLEASE GIVE US BIGGER SHOWER CABINS

Interview: Simeon Kovachki

Who is it more convenient for, party-hard people or chill-seeking ones? Both! It is just a bit noisy from the club on Friday and Saturday nights. And who is really studying at that time? I mean if you are into yoga and seeks some kind of chill chakra then this is not the right place for you!

What made you choose this accommodation? I decided to choose Delta house as my first option because it’s the closest dorm to our university. I was worried that it might be too noisy due to the club on the first floor, but I was ready to risk it all in the name of being 5 minutes from the Uni. And at that time, I did not know that the club is for older people and I thought that I can just party hard and go upstairs when I get wasted and fall sleep ASAP.

Rate your accommodation from 1-5.

3.69 precisely! To sum all the information up, there is no accommodation convenient for each person. Everyone here has different priorities and taste so choosing the right one is a very personal decision. My advice is to explore every option on JU’s website, talk to fellow students have a visit and not to be afraid. Either way, your time in Jönköping will be an unforgettable experience.

Name the two things you love most about your accommodation. I love how close it is! I wake up sometimes in the morning and tap myself on

Debate Club: the newest jewel in the crown of JSA An extensive interview with Austra Kase and Paul Pawlowski by Nikola Kolev

NIKOLA: Hello and welcome to the fourth podcast episode of JIBS United in partnership with RadioK, and thank you for listening. My name is Nikola Kolev, a writer for the magazine and I am glad to present you the JIBS Debate Society – one of the newly established projects within JSA. To give us a better insight into the topic and why it concern students in our university, I have here with me Austra Kase, current Vice – President of JSA, responsible for developing the educational quality at JIBS. Recently elected as the next year president of the student association, she is already looking forward to the opportunity of improving the student experience at our university.

N: Lets start off our talk by me asking you in what situations in your life you find yourselves debating? In a casual chat with friends, throughout the work with classmates or maybe in a Facebook post arguing on a topic that you are passionate about? P: I am a pretty confrontational person, so I find myself arguing with people all the time. Sometimes for a legitimate reason, sometimes just for pure entertainment. I guess that is just how humans interact with each other. A: I think I have a different approach to debating. I kind of see it as a lot of listening as well and you are debating while you are listening so I always like to take some pauses listening to someone speaking that in my mind I debate what I am going to say next.

AUSTRA: Thank you, that has been the best introduction that I have ever received in my life. N: And with her, I have the initiator of this project and my fellow classmate, Paul Pawlowski, to tells us more about his vision for JIBS Debate Society. Glad to have you here, my friend.

P: She is definitely the more experienced debater. N: And she sounds like the more reasonable one, so if you must compare your way of debating, reason against emotions, what would you say about yourself?

PAUL: Thank you, Nikola.

28

P: Well it depends on the situation, if you are in a debate over trivial topic with a friend, you may get emotional sometimes but you still try to rely on fact. However, in a professional setting, when there is a judge and a debate structure, you have to rely on facts, listen to the arguments, try to counter them.

we went really deep into some facts, things that people do not usually think about. That made us think that we should not be part of NATO, it is bad for us, even though the overall opinion is that it is awesome. So, when we had to debate that “yeah, NATO is awesome”, we still had on the back of our minds this thought that “no, no, no, we do not want this”. That was really interesting, and I think the judges also saw that, because we performed much better on debates where we were actually defending the topic that we believed in. But, if you do debating somewhat professionally, then you learn to be able to take the step back and what I believe does not matter, what matters is what the government and everyone else believes.

A: I kind of feel the same. Because I have done a lot of debating on national and regional level, there have been topics where my team and me would feel really strongly about one side of the argument, but in the same time we would have to defend the other side, so it is mostly thinking about the facts. Sometimes it would be very hard not to let our emotion get on the way. But sometimes you just need to get to the bare facts, no emotions. Also, in those cases, you come as the more logical one, because you are using what these high government officials or whoever has said anything and you are not really putting yourself into it. But in an everyday situation, I guess emotions just come in naturally and if you feel really passionately about something you really do not want to speak against it.

N: You make the transition very easy for me, so if you must highlight one commonmisunderstanding about debating, what would it be? A: That debating is about arguing. I would not say that it is about arguing, but rather trying to understand because in order to counteract your opponent’s arguments you have to understand why they are saying the specific thing and you cannot just take your personal beliefs for example or your general stance and say those are your counter-arguments, you have to understand why they say that. That is why I think debating is more about understanding and listening, not that much arguing.

N: I understand. And have you tried, in a debate setting, to defend a stance which you do not support yourself? A: Oh, totally! We had once this really fun debate about whether Latvia, where I come from, should or should not be part of NATO. My friends and me, we were quite critical on the topic so

29

N: So, Paul, to get deeper into the purpose of our talk, JIBS Debate Society, why do you think a business school is a suitable place to launch such a club? It is a common understanding that debating is more for law or political science students, so that provokes me to ask you how did you find a need for one? P: Ideally, I agree that a law school would be the ideal place for that. However, law, business and economics are kind of slices in the same pie, so people who study economics and business will be naturally more inclined to know about things happening in the world. What happens in the world of economics is highly influenced by what happens in the political scene.

N: We are approaching the end of our talk and I hope some of our listeners already got interested in the project. Student Life at JIBS from Different Perspectives by Annie Johnson

A

ugust has passed, the amazing kick off is behind us and the new school year has finally begun. Some of you are new to the student life, some are new to JIBS, and some are even new to the country. Although it has already been a couple of weeks since JIBS opened up their doors once again after a well-needed summer break, I assume there are quite a few of you out there who are still a little lost in the city, wondering where to find a decent meal, or how to make new friends? No worries, three students with difference origins, experiences and advises are here for your rescue!

Justus Jäde, originally from Braunschweig, Germany, moved to Jönköping to begin his bachelor’s degree in 2017. During his first year as an International Management-student at JIBS he was an active member in five (!) different projects under JSA. He is, for example, a member of the rowing club, and was a casted model at the Spring Inspiration’s fashion show 2017. One thing Justus wished he knew before he moved to Sweden was that the darker half of the year is rather rough, so be prepared! Although, on the bright side, Justus admits that he was more nervous than needed about the workload required to manage to pass the classes.

Justus has been able to do some traveling within Sweden and thereby got to inhale the culture and country, he highely recommend other students to do so as well:

31

I think Stockholm is a must and I can highly recommend the west coast which I really much loved – but also really good is just to drive a little bit around town to some close lake in the nature.

In January this year, Dedre de Lange left Australia for a semester abroad – at JIBS. The Queensland University of Technology (QUT), where Dedre is majoring in International Business, has approximately 50,000 students which made her experience in Jönköping into something different. She explains the difference: “… coming to JU is basically the exact opposite of what I’m used to at QUT. Classes are small, teachers actually remembers some students’ names and making friends is easy! There are so many cool school activities and my kickoff week was amazing!”

Louise Rask from Älsvjö, just south of Stockholm, is currently doing her second year of the Marketing Management program. She had close to no expectations when she began her journey at JIBS, since she did not know what to expect to begin with. However, she was hoping to get to know new people, which she did for instance by being involved in the JSA Ball Committee. This was a both fun and an educative experience where she was able to learn further about marketing, and of course meet a lot of students at JU. Additionally, Louise was a head fader at the spring kickoff, where she got the second opportunity to experience a kick-off as well as getting to know people from all around campus and the world.

According to Dedre, a must is to visit Gothenburg. She had visited multiple Swedish cities but thinks that Gothenburg is a “more relaxed Stockholm but with all the interesting cultural or social events”.

When asked about what she knows now, after a year at JIBS, that she wishes she knew when she started is that she advices to be open-minded about participating all kinds of activities. “My greatest memories of this first year comes from participating in different things, getting to know people and making memories for life. “

32

Although the three students who were interviewed are from different countries with different expectations towards Jönköping University, they all seemed to have the same view on student life when attending JIBS: to ease the process of creating new friendships, stay active in committees and projects. If you are unsure which projects and committees JIBS have to offer, we have prepared the list for you in the article called “JIBS’ Projects and Committees” where you can spend a minute or two to figure out which ones suit you.

Quick Tips for New (or “old”) students at JIBS: Hungry? Then Mister Rice is an option for a “low budget” lunch (make sure to bringyour JU-card for a discount) and Rosegarden lunch buffet to “treat yourself every now and then” New to Sweden? “Enjoy every possible second of the good weather – there are not too many nice days especially in the winter” Want to travel with other students at JU? Don’t miss the Student Union School Trips! They occur three times per semester and information about upcoming trips will be announced at Student Union’s Facebook page. How to meet new friends? “Be open to participating in activities, projects and committees because that is where you get to know new people”

Road-trippin’ your way by Elisa Baker

through Uni S

tudying in Jönköping basically means studying in the heart of Scandinavia. This means endless road-trip opportunities! If you are an exchange student this might be the time of your life to explore not only Sweden, but also Scandinavia, and why not the rest of Europe while you are at it? If you are a Swede, or even a local from the Jönköping area, we are often bad at appreciating the things that are right in front of us. Take a break from your studies and get inspired from these destinations, around or south of Jönköping!

35

Ullared and Gekås Swedes need no introduction to Ullared. But for non-Swedes, this phenomenon can be a bit hard to grasp. In the middle of pretty much nothing, Ullared is a tiny town, surrounded by forest as far as the eye can see. Yet it is the home to a huge shopping centre called Gekås, that attracts almost 5 million visitors each year! This one department store has everything from food, to clothes, hobby department and books. The reason they have become so popular is that they are cheap. Really cheap. Most people go there to stock up on things such as laundry detergent, and personal hygiene product to last them throughout the year. But if you are lucky, you can also come across some seriously cheap designer clothing. However, collections vary and you will have to keep your eyes

open for the real bargains once you are there. Many other stores have also started opening around town, and if you get tired of shopping there is a variety of restaurants and bars, and even spas to relax in. When: The shopping centre is open 360 days per year, but you should avoid visiting during peak seasons, such as Christmas and public holidays. Days like these, there can be a queue of over a kilometre to even enter the store! Getting there: Best option is to drive, and it is a trip of about 2 hours. If driving is not an option, why not take a chartered bus trip? There are several bus companies offering this with departure from Jönköping every week.

36

Gränna and Visingsö For those with a sweet tooth, Gränna is paradise. The city is famous for its polkagris candy and you will find lovely picturesque shops all along the main street selling these lovely treats. Many of the shops let you watch the mesmeric process of making the candy by hand, and then let you try the newly made sweets! If you are not into these sweet treats, this is a lovely town anyway. Just stroll around the cobblestone alleyways and enjoy the charming scenario and old cottages, covered in climbing ros-

es, before enjoying a fika in one of the many coffee shops in Gränna. When heading over to Visningsö, in the middle of Lake Vättern, make sure to make your way down to the ferry in plenty of time. Especially during peak season. It is a short trip, and once there the best way to explore the island is by bike. There are several places where you can rent a bike. A trip to Visningsö is not complete without a tour by horse and carriage, as well as a visit to the castle ruins, dating back to the 1100’s.

When:

Getting there:

Best time a year is spring and summer, but early autumn is also a good time as the tourist season is coming to an end. Avoid making this trip during winter, as many shops and attractions may be closed already.

Take bus 122 towards Gränna and get off at Gränna Järngränd to be in the middle of town. After this, it is a short walk down to the harbour where you can catch the ferry over to Visingsö.

Copenhagen The capital of our neighbour country Denmark is a beautiful city, and there is so much to see and do. Plan for a weekend, and you will not feel stressed out. Apart from the obvious (and pretty much mandatory) things, like visiting the statue of the little mermaid, the Freetown Christiania, and strolling around Nyhavn, you should do like the locals. Make your way to the shopping centre Fisketorvet for shopping of famous Danish design. Also, make sure to stop by the market halls of Torvehallarna for a nice and relaxed lunch. When in Denmark, you should try the Danes favourite food: Smörrebröd. These are small sandwiches, with a variety of spreads. Torvehallarna is also the perfect place to indulge in some typical Danish pastries. If the weather permits, A beautiful evening in Copenhagen is best spent at Tivoli. Did you know that Walt Disney himself got the inspiration to build Disneyland from this iconic amusement park? Enjoy the rides, eat some sweets and just breath in the lovely retro feel of this historical site.

When: All year!

Getting there: Catch the train from Jönköping. It takes around 3 hours and costs about 700 SEK return trip for a student. Swebus departs from Jönköping several times a day. It is a longer trip, but tickets are around 400 SEK return trip for students.

38

Österlen For a more stress-free get-away, escape to the utter south-east corner of Sweden. Österlen has the last few years become a true centre for cultures such as art, food and gardens. Festivals and events are happening all throughout the year, but some highlights are the food festival every year in mid-May and the yearly apple festival in late September. Oddly enough some of Sweden’s (And even Europe’s!) best chefs have found their way to Österlen lately, and all along the countryside, you can find high-quality restaurants. Even one or two with Micheline stars… Do not worry if you are on a tight budget, you can find amazing places to eat anyway! Österlen has an abundant of incredible products, and everywhere you turn you will see endless wheat fields and cattle strolling around the green fields. Maybe this is the reason why great chefs thrive in Österlen… Stop by the chocolate factory “Österlenchoklad” for the best chocolate you will ever eat, and do not miss out on the guided tour in their factory! Also make sure to stop by the famous self-supporting farm of the family “Mandelmann”, famously known from their very own show on national television.

When:

Along the coast, you will also find “Ale stenar”, also called “Sweden’s stone hedge”. Here you will get some incredible views of the surrounding landscape.

The mine is open from May to late September, be sure to check exact dates on their website. Regardless of when you visit, dress warmly. The mine is quite cold, all around the year.

Best during spring and summer. Preferably the one week per year (mid-May) where the landscape turns all yellow from blooming rapeseed!

Getting there:

You will need a car. It is a drive of about 3 hours. Bring a bike, if possible, and explore the area. There are several places to sleep. All from bed and breakfasts to fancy hotels. Kleva gruva This historical nickel mine dating back to the year 1691 will keep you busy for a day! First of all, you should enjoy a mine-walk in the old caves. There is a lake inside the mine and several old shafts and passageways. You can choose to discover the mine in the company of a guide, or all by yourself if you are adventurous! There are also treasure hunts, and you can try real old fashioned gold panning, rock climbing, picnic and barbeques. If you still have not had enough there are several nature walks in the surroundings. What better way to explore Swedish nature are there than with a hike through the forest?

When:

Getting there: It is a 1.5-hour car drive south-east of Jönköping. Bring a GPS!

COFFEE BREAK with AHSAN MUSTAFA by Sylvie Dellabruna

I

had the pleasure of sitting down with JIBS alumnus Ahsan Mustafa on a beautiful day in Gothenburg this past May. Ahsan attended JIBS from 2007 to 2011 after moving from his hometown, Sheikhupura, Pakistan at age of nineteen years. He completed his bachelors in International Management and master’s degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

40

While writing his master thesis, Ahsan was offered a position at Volvo Group as a Global Sourcing Buyer.

such as the monorail system in Miami, a monorail system in Bangkok, and currently on a “people mover system” in Las Vegas.

“I finished my master thesis for Volvo and then got an offer from Volvo; which was the first step in my job career. I think I was one of the luckiest ones in my class that got a job during my master thesis.”

“I work with my engineering colleagues on designs, and then we work with suppliers to see how we should develop the system. If you work in procurement you are a spider in a web; you work with planning, you work with management you work with engineering you work with sales you work with the customer, legal, and everyone.”

However, staying in Sweden was not always his plan, and after years of pushing moving home aside, he decided to stay. “My initial plan was to just finish my degree and move back, then the offer from Volvo was a surprise for me; then I thought two years and I will go back. And in two years I said, two more years. Now it has been 11 years, time just flies"

After talking about his exciting position at Bombardier, I wanted to know if moving to Sweden was a culture shock and how the beginning of his journey started. Ahsan had a lot to reflect on when thinking back to his first days in Sweden.

Now Ahsan works for a Canadian company named Bombardier Inc. who builds airplanes and trains. This job position has taken him to Stockholm, where he has been for the last two and half years

“I knew the time difference would be different [at first], and people say it’s dark in the winter, and sunny in the summer. I remember landing in Arlanda, and it was 9 pm, and the sun was pretty much shining, and I was like, where the heck am I?”. Adding, “The big shock for me was that I learned some Swedish words before coming, I remember I was trying to get some frukost, like a breakfast, and I had difficulty pronouncing the word, and then, the girl at the counter spoke English with me. The knowledge of English that Swedish people have is mind-blowing. And I think if you are an international student, you shouldn’t worry about it.”

“I started with Bombardier as a Global Strategic Sourcing Manager, after quitting my job at Volvo. Here at Bombardier I am responsible for team distributed across Asia, Europe and America. “ Bombardier has 78 production and engineering sites in 28 countries, and has recently delivered new commercial airplanes called the C-Series. This is one the most advance airplane in the market within its segment. The company has been a part of many major train projects

41

What was also very fun for Ahsan was meeting so many students from different parts of the world.

“That was the best part. And I remember I was living in Råslatt, and that was a party town. But I mean, back then you can’t imagine, it was so crazy.” And for the signature green JIBS overalls, “You should keep them I mean, it’s once in a lifetime.”

“What is so fun is when you are in school at JIBS –if I recall correctly in 2007-2008 we had around 64 or so nationalities on campus, and it was amazing – I worked with a student from all parts of the word such as from Mongolia, from Japan, Africa and from the U.S., it was a really dynamic and international environment.” However, what he enjoyed most was the library. “I love that place. I love the people there. I remember when you need a book they bring it for you and are so good to you.”

Ahsan has been living in Sweden since his arrival in 2007 and feels very connected to Sweden; feeling his presence in both cultures. “I think I have become a hybrid. I am no longer fully Pakistani, and I am not fully Swedish, I am a hybrid of both. When I go back [to Pakistan], people notice that I behave a bit different. For example, standing in a queue and listening more.”

Ahsan also remembered kickoff, and how much it is a special time in one’s university career in Sweden.

42

rush and loves the feeling of the cold air blowing into the aircraft right before jumping out.

I think I have become a hybrid. I am no longer fully Pakistani, and I am not fully Swedish, I am a hybrid of both.

“I do skydiving, every summer I do it. I am a licensed skydiver, and I go to Norway in the big mountains to do it.” He continues, “I also do plane gliding or, segelflug.”

Ahsan also has very good advice for incoming students about how they can utilize their time at JIBS and in Sweden by being proactive and marketing themselves.

Regarding this issue’s theme, “the start of something new”, Ahsan offers an insight into why it is so important to step out of one’s comfort zone and try something new.

“I would recommend for the new students that they should start looking for an internship as soon as possible. When you are in your second to last or last year before graduating, keep sending your CV’s to any company, and you will get a response. Pick up phone and call don’t rely on email, Swedes are very nice.”

“Because I think all of us need some drive; if you are an international student, you are already doing something out of your comfort zone because you have decided leave your home town to study in new cultural context of Sweden.”

Ahsan has advice when it comes to studies as well.

Chatting with Ahsan and learning of his success after JIBS was a great experience. He encourages current students to reach out to alumni to take advantage of their experience and resources for the future.

“Just do well in your courses and pass. However, these day’s knowledge is phasing out so fast, so some practical advice; get good in Excel and PowerPoint, I spend most of my day in those two. Read books outside of curriculum this is where the learning starts”

Thank you, Ahsan, from the JIBS United team and students.

Another side of Ahsan, and a fun fact about him, other than his success in his career and his fun-filled time at JIBS, is that he is a skydiver and fly glider planes (segelflyg). He says that it gives him a

Project Manager in Focus Case Academy by Sylvie DellaBruna

Simon

I

sat down with Simon Cederholm at Dallucci Café, on campus during a cozy, rainy day to discuss his new position as Case Academy Project Manager. Simon, 21, is now a second-year International Management student at JIBS from the town of Strängnäs just outside of Stockholm. Besides his involvement in school projects, you may not know that he is a sailor who competes all over Sweden, and has even won the Swedish Championship in ice sailing in 2012. From a business perspective, Simon owns his own business in which he works with other companies in the areas of business administration and product & business development.

44

To begin to get to know Simon, and his decision to manage Case Academy, I first asked him why he decided to become the project manager, he explained,

and my weakness is that I am a little bit stubborn, I really want to succeed. Sometimes you may need to drop it, but I think you can change it to a strength as well.”

Simon Cederholm: “I can’t sit still for five minutes, I always have to do something. Looking into Case Academy and what it is, the connection between the companies and the real world; looking at being in school, my work, and with my company – it should suit me.” Adding, “It is not the biggest organization; it’s more personal. I want to help other students, I’m a salesman from the beginning and I want people to be happy. [It is like] selling a service for students and companies.”

Diving more into what Case Academy is and can offer students, Simon is excited and ready to express his enthusiasm for the project saying; SC: “I think Case Academy is one of the really important parts of JIBS because it helps you with your future. I know some who have done this earlier who have gotten jobs at some of the companies.” Further explaining, “You will not just do the case, you will meet important people within the company, it’s about the network. You may not see [the benefits] today, but maybe in a few years [when] working on cases with companies in the future to solve problems, and innovations – getting a network with both companies, other schools, and JIBS.”

He made comparisons to sailing when expressing what qualifies him to be the project manager for a committee like Case Academy; SC: “I think it is because I really like structure and communication. I am a leader as a person, and I like to lead. When sailing with my team, I make the decisions and create the tactics, it gives me experience.” Adding, “I have experience with coming in contact with companies; I have a big network in Europe.”

Because Simon is a new Project Manager, I also had to know if he will be making any significant changes to improve the project, he expresses that it is too early on to tell, but might have a few ideas.

Strengths and weaknesses are important to acknowledge when taking on a leadership position, a subject Simon seems comfortable opening up about.

SC: “It’s really hard to say right now because I haven’t set my team yet and I am new. One idea I hope and want to have, though, is to work with the other events and association at JIBS and JU.” Adding, “this year we have some really good companies that we are working with,

SC: “My strength is to have a good communication and plan for how and when my team and I will do something,

45

but maybe more international – a goal is to have a case outside of Sweden.”

ple who are similar to you; get to know how a project works from the beginning to the end.”

For new incoming students and students who are interested in joining the project after learning more, Simon encourages you to join.

Thinking of starting something new can, in fact, be a huge step in your life, and maybe Case Academy can be part of that new start. Simon’s final words for anyone thinking of joining, not only Case Academy, but any project, reminding us that what we do now affects us in the future.

SC: “I think it is very important for new students; really think through what you want to do during your studies here at JIBS. It”s fun to do events and projects, of course, it’s taking time, so make a list of all of the positives and negatives with what you want to be a part of. Take your time before making a decision.” Adding, “It’s very fun to be a part of a project, you should choose Case Academy to get to know a group, network, [meet] peo-

SC: “Think about beyond one year or what this can only give you at JIBS. This network may help you in twenty years. If you are driven and want to succeed in your working life – it’s now.”

Are you ready for

the Winter Banquet & Summer Ball? by Elisa Baker

50

T

wice every year, the popular summer ball and winter banquet takes place. The Winter Banquet has been an annual event since 2011 while the Summer Ball was launched in 2016. Together, both are some of the most popular happenings at school during the year! For the Winter banquet in fall 2017 around 160 tickets were sold. The event took place in a beautiful winter wonderland scenery at “Stugan” in Stadsparken. The summer ball, that took place in mid may 2018 sold 320 tickets! It is not hard to see why. It is a reminder to us all that soon yet another semester will be behind us, and that summer is just around the corner. It is a great opportunity to spend time with old friends, and to catch up before exam periods start and everyone leaves for summer break. It is also a great chance to meet new people! Both the Winter Banquet and the summer ball has the same style of arrangement. They include a formal 3-course dinner and entertainment, followed by an after party. What differs them from other JSA events are that they are more formal and organised to their character, compared to other typical “Sittnings”. For example, the “Ovve” should be left at home, as the dress code is suit and evening dress. The summer ball takes place at “Munksjömagasinet”, located just next to the Munksjö lake in a beautiful setting. It starts off with stunning lakeside mingle, with a chance to relish some sparkling wine while enjoying photo time with friends! After dinner, it is time for the afterparty, which means dancing the night away. If you somehow cannot attend the ball and dinner, there is no reason to worry. You can buy tickets for only the afterparty.

51

Even if both events are initiatives by Jibs students, students from other schools at JÜnkÜping university are welcome as well. Starting from spring this year, the ball committee has actively marketed the event towards other schools. A strategy that really paid off, as sold tickets for the summer ball was at an all-time high. The tickets are sold at set dates that are announced at the ball committees Facebook page in advance. People line up early to get a hold of the tickets, so make sure you don’t wait for too long! It is time to dust off the tux and pull on those dancing shoes for a magical evening, spent in the company of good friends!

NIGHTLIFE A GUIDE TO

AT JÖNKÖPING UNIVERSITY by Beata Edlund

S

tudying at Jönköping University is not only an opportunity to gain knowledge at one of the four exceptional schools. The university also offers an introduction to the incredible student life within Jönköping city. There are of course clubs open to the public which are happy to provide quality nights out for students, however, there are on-campus pubs which are exclusive to the students of Jönköping University. These exclusive activities are what this article will focus on.

53

Wednesdays are known as the clubbing day for students and is often referred to as “little Saturday”. There are often special events hosted by university clubs on Wednesdays, which start nights filled with happiness, great company and often a drink or two. The city lingers with excitement and students in overalls can be seen wandering the town until early Thursday mornings.

House. This pub serves as a café during the day and students are welcome to study and socialize. Elda Tosic, a student at Jönköping University, says that,

Rio is the right place to go to if you are doing group work and [want] a cup of coffee or a beer on a Wednesday evening.

I highly recommend visiting this downstairs pub to experience the joyful atmosphere and also chat with the nice staff and student volunteers; in fact, our very own committee West Coast works there. A much-appreciated event at Rio is their Taco Friday. I recommend you to be on time though, tacos run out fast!

There are many options when choosing what to do for an eventful Wednesday. Jönköping University’s on-campus pub, Jubel, offer after school events between 4PM and 8PM. Here students are offered various drinks at affordable prices. They are also sure to provide high quality music and the chance to mingle with classmates or friends. I encourage you to attend one of these evenings whether you want to meet some new friends, or have a drink with some old ones; lively conversation is always certain. During the year Jubel is also presenting two sittnings that any student can attend just make sure you do not miss the ticket release.

After an afternoon or evening at one of the on-campus pubs you might be inclined to continue the night at a night club. Luckily, Akademien is Jönköping University’s exclusive, student-only night club. “AKA” is located at walking distance from campus, in a historic area called “Tändsticksområdet”. They offer diverse music at several dance floors and serve drinks for the same reasonable prices as the on-campus pubs. One of the most significant advantages in relation to other local night clubs is that Akademien provides the option of

If Jubel is not for you then, luckily, Jönköping University has another pub! The pub is called Rio and is also located on campus just under the Student

54

ordering some incredibly filling midnight snacks like nachos or chicken strips. Elda comments, saying,

AKA is a club with a different vibe, people are here to have fun and you can be as unique you want without other people judging you, AKA is a student club at its best.

There is a rookie mistake you should definitely avoid if you want to experience an unforgettable night at Akademien. Don’t forget your ID and student ID. These are what validate your exclusive invite. This applies to all events with the exceptions of open nights where students are welcome to bring a friend from another university. Hopefully by now you are aware of what Jönköping has to offer on a Wednesday night for students, and have gathered enough information to start planning your next night out. If you need further tips, don’t afraid to ask a second or third year student, we would love to help you enjoy life at uni.

SPRING INSPIRATION What happened at

by Johannes Ahlse

56

What is Spring Inspiration? Spring Inspiration is Scandinavia’s largest fashion show entirely driven by students and attract over 800 attendees. It consists of students from all faculties at Jönköping University but is managed by students at Jönköping International Business School. Spring Inspiration invites artists, entertainers, and designers/stores, both local and national ones, to show their clothes at the annual fashion show. The fashion show usually takes place around April/May every year and attract both large companies as well as private persons.

57

O

n the 4th of May, Jönköping’s annual fashion show Spring Inspiration was held at Spira. We were lucky to be blessed with beautiful weather after a long and cold winter, and what could have been more suitable than an evening filled with fashion, music and glamour? Spira is in the heart of Jönköping and right by the shore of the lake Munksjön. The perfect setting for a warm summer day. At five o’ clock, Spira fills up with over 800 people from the city excited to see what this year’s show will bring. Spring Inspiration has become the ’Met Gala’ of Jönköping, ”spreading a bit of star shine on Jönköping”.

This year marks the 21st show that Spring Inspiration has put together. With a theme of ’Colourful Art’, it was no secret that the project would focus a lot on bright and popping colours. When you walked into the building, you were greeted by an arrangement of colourful balloons, gold balloons hang from the ceiling spelling out ”SPRING18” and an exhibition of paintings by Hanna Öhman. After a while, when people have had a glass of wine and enjoyed the terrace, the doors to the auditorium opened. Névelle, a group of dancers opened up the show with a powerful performance to set the tone for the rest of the evening.

The evening continued with a diverse collection of clothes, from swimwear to worker’s clothes from Husqvarna and of course, Spring Inspiration’s own collection. A hula-hoop performance by ACTS OF EMOTION stunned the audience, and lastly, we enjoyed performances by the incredibly talented Sandro Cavazza and crew, playing songs such as ’So much better’,’High With Somebody’ and the world premiere of his new song ’When I Get Rich’. Suddenly, the clock turned 9 pm, and two hours filled with entertainment, fashion and glam had passed. But before the show ended, Isabel Stacy and Adam Halldén, hosts of the evening, had one more act to present. The project managers Jennifer Alfredsson and Ottilia Clewåker look stunning in their summery dresses paired with a big smile as they entered the stage. After a couple of thankful sentences to partners and the people sitting in the audience, the sound of the song ”Dreamer” started to play. As the peak of the song filled the room, the team of Spring Inspiration run out on stage, danced and laughed together to mark the end of the amazing show after their 8 months of hard work. This year’s show was really something else, and if you ask me, this was a night that no one will forget.

Get in involved with GoExchange by Hannah Edgren

O

lunch lectures and pre-events followed the same theme. The pre-events that are held are intended to be fun, informative, and social. During fall 2017, the GoExchange pre-event was held in Jubel (the International Business School’s pub) where people could take part in a music quiz, drinks, and some information regarding the fair. During Spring of 2018, the GoExchange pre-event was held in Rio (School of Engineering’s Pub) where a buffé was served together with a music quiz and a photo wall. During both events, the sponsor team managed to put together great prizes for those who participated in the music quiz and for those who posted the most creative photo on Instagram.

nce every semester, usually in October during the fall and April during the spring, a group of students from all schools on campus put together what is known as the GoExchange fair. The fair, typically held in Campus arena, provides an opportunity for the students to explore and speak to representatives of schools they could potentially go on exchange to. The project is directly under Jönköping Student Union and the International Office. However, since it is run by students, it is primarily organized in cooperation between HINT (School of Engineering), JSA International (International Business School), LOK (School of Education and Communication), and S.U.S.H.I. (School of Health and Welfare).

Now, as you can imagine, putting together, these events require great organization and clearly defined areas of responsibilities. Therefore, the GoExchange members has been divided into teams. During 2017/2018 there was a logistics team, a marketing team, a sponsor team, a graphic design team, and an event team together with 2-3 project managers. No prior experience or expertise is required in order to apply for the various positions within the different teams. However, it is always a positive attribute to be interested and driven about going abroad, meeting and working with exchange students, and putting together these types of events.

The fair is usually held for 3 hours during lunch period, and every year the students arranging the event decide on a theme. At the fair, each school (arranged by country) is given a table where they hand out brochures and provide information to interested students. More than often, students who represent a certain school and a specific country also like to bring along food and treats that are typical of their culture. This allows the fair not only to be informative of schools but also of culture, country, and people. For the spring fair of 2018, the decided theme was airport inspired. This also meant that the other events leading up to the fair, such as

Meetings are held on a regular basis, about once a week - once every other week together with the entire group along with the project managers, and once every other week with the individual teams. Having regular meetings along with team-building activities allows the students who are involved to get to know each other and create friendship amongst and within the teams. However, since GoExchange is a cooperation between schools, this will

also allow you to get to know people beyond your own school! Applications for GoExchange positions open up at the end of August, and if you are interested in joining keep an eye out for posters around school and information on social media. A good first step would be to follow GoExchange on Instagram and Facebook:

Here are three quick questions with one of the previous project manager for Go Exchange 2017/2018, Alexandra Winther: 1. Why did you apply as project manager for GoExchange?

I wanted to give the project a chance that it deserved. I had seen the project from a distance as a board member and wanted to see if I could help it develop and grow towards its full potential.

2. What has been the best part of being a part of GoExchange?

The team and everything we have accomplished together. I could not have dreamed of a better outcome. I was both shocked and amazed with all the work and the amazing feedback we’ve gotten throughout the year

3. Why would you recommend joining GoExchange 2018/2019?

It’s a project that will help you develop many skills and get to know people from all schoolsas well as gaining a better understanding of studying abroad, internships and how all thatworks. You will also get to meet Exchange students from all over the world and become familiar with new cultures, languages and partner universities.

SPORTS JU at

T

rying a new sport or continuing your favourite one should be a given in my book. Not only does JUSA and Jรถnkรถping have a lot to offer, but as a new student, sporting can be a great way to make new friends and find other like-minded individuals. In this section, we outline some of the more unconventional sports that are available, while still showing the diverse and range of sports that are accessible. JUSA has something to offer for everyone.

63

New at school and want to try something different? Then you are in luck because the opportunity for playing sports on or off-campus are plenty! At Jรถnkรถping University Sport Association (JUSA), you can play all the classic sports; Badminton, Basketball, Floorball, Volleyball, Swimming, Tennis, Futsal and many more. Anyone who wants to try something new or stick to what they love, have that opportunity at Jรถnkรถping University, regardless of their ability, experience or ambition. The more popular sports even offer both training sessions as well as competitive practices for players who want to take their skills to the next level. The best part is that the price to be a member is extremely affordable. At only 250 SEK per semester, you can participate in any sport as much as you want, being able to switch when you want or take a break whenever you feel like it. You are not obligated to do anything, but you also have the opportunity to take part in multiple sports if you have the time!

64

Campus arena, where most sports take place is right next to the University, in order to allow students ease of practice by stopping by after school or a meeting. Most practice times are usually after school, which makes going to practice as timely as it can be. Relaxing by playing a bit of basketball after school is one of my favourite things to do. In the same building, you can find Nordic Wellness, which is a gym facility where you can gym, go for stationary workouts, do bicycle workouts in group and so much more. Campus Arena is simply a great place to stay healthy, have fun and meet new people.

getting tickets is very cheap. HV71 is actually one of the most successful Swedish hockey teams. The team has won the Swedish Hockey League as late as 2017. If you decide to go to one of the games, you are guaranteed an intense match. Another lovely sport to get into during the warmer days of the year is rowing! JURA, a branch of JUSA actual operates an amazing rowing club off-campus. Rowing in the summer heat, speeding through the water is not only an awesome way to enjoy Jönköping, but also a good way to cool down during the summer heat while getting your workout in.

If you want to try new sports outside of school, however, that is of course possible. There are tons of sports outside of school. Maybe you want to try boxing? You can find a ”BK Ringen” close to the train station if you are looking for an intense, versatile and exciting sport. If you want something a bit more social, then why not go bowling? There are three places you can go to in Jönköping. There is also motor crossing, paintballing, skiing, and horseback riding available in the city or close by. If you’re not the sporty type but still enjoy watching sports, we strongly recommend watching a HV71 (Huskvarna Vätterstad 1971) game, the ice hockey giant’s hub is located in Huskvarna, where they play several matches. The arena is just a short bus trip away and

ello everyone! My name is Albert, and I want to introduce you to StartUP Jönköping; a student association from the Student Union, in which I am an active member.

topics of entrepreneurship and innovation. Therefore, we host different events with formats such as lectures, workshops or networking events on a regular basis. During summer semester of 2018, we were able to organize 5 events for the students. For Instance, we invited Angelr (now Qualora Capital) from Stockholm to campus. They are a startup who talked about how they’ve built an innovative next-generation investment bank. Additionally, we offered a lecture with Volvo Cars about innovation and disruption in the automotive sector. These events pose as excellent opportunities to network with these companies. A friend of mine was offered an internship at Volvo in Gothenburg during our event with them. Our last event was the first ever student organized Hackathon at JIBS, which we arranged together with SIGMA Technology, one of the biggest consultancy firms of the Nordics. During the Hackathon, the participants developed real digital product prototypes with the aim to make Jönköping “a better place.”

My friends and I started the association because we all became interested in entrepreneurship early on in our lives. That is why we also began to study strategic entrepreneurship at Jönköping University. We saw the opportunity to share our ideas and network with other schools at the campus and inspire each other during entertaining events and guest lectures. Also, it was important to us to encourage others to engage in entrepreneurship and show that entrepreneurship is not only about funding a company but also about having an entrepreneurial mindset in business and maybe in life as well. The aim of StartUP Jönköping is to reach out to students from different schools and create a network for them to and inspire and empower each other regarding

In addition to the events, we are also organizing events for members, such as barbeques, sports activities and insider afterparties after the events.

YOU there. We are a dynamic association with an open-minded and flexible structure, which always leaves room for new ideas. I would say that this is a real opportunity for anyone that strives to develop, grow on a personal basis and wants to make valuable contacts for their career.

Through my involvement in the association, I was able to gain first-hand insights into thrilling industries and was able to further develop my personality, both on a professional and personal basis. And last but not least; I received study abroad points for my exchange semester in Mexico.

If you want to learn more about StartUP or join the association, you can visit us here:

After my exchange, I will be engaged in the association again and hope to see

W

ell, hello there! I believe we haven’t met. Let me introduce myself; I am the new President of JSA – JIBS Student Association. I began my life in Jönköping in 2016 when I moved here from my home country Latvia to start the Sustainable Enterprise Development bachelor program. For me this decision to study here was the beginning of a totally new chapter in my life. I have made other big decisions in my life, like starting to live on my own at the young age of 16, but the decision to go to university is one that you and I have in common, dear student. Some (my mother, for example) would argue that choosing to study in a university in a country that I had never really visited before might have been a crazy decision, but I can say with confidence that it has also been one of the best decisions that I have ever made.

72

I see every new beginning as an opportunity to develop as a person, take a different approach to the life I am living and to get more out of it. Thus, university was the perfect fit for where I wanted to go as a person, simply because as a student you can get so much out of time you spend here. I hope that you will gain a lot from your stay here as well! As you may notice during the kick-off, one of our strengths is the large number of international students on campus. After all, we are called the Jรถnkรถping International Business School! On my first day of kickoff I met a more diverse group of people than I had met in my then 19 years of existing on this planet. The courses that I have taken have opened up my eyes and filled me with knowledge that I did not even anticipate of receiving. And lastly, the JIBS Student Association has provided me with hours and hours of involvement, new friends and a sense of belonging and community. I believe that we as new or current students get two new beginnings every year, one in January when we make all the New Years resolutions to work out more, eat better and be more financially responsible and another one when the academic year starts. With this start of the academic year I encourage you to take on something you have not done before, develop some new skills, make new friends that you never would have imagined having otherwise. Be more kind, more ambitious and more open-minded. Make the most of your time here! And always feel free to come by the JSA office to have a chat and a cup of coffee or tea!
