Housing Project 2020/21 Group Work

HIGHRISE ALLOTMENT GARDEN

FOR REMOTE WORKERS

Today, work is radically influenced by the growing digitization. Technology has revolutionized work allowing a person to perform his or her task anywhere around the globe remotely. The virus that hits the world in early 2020 accelerated this evolution, forcing millions of workers to isolate and restructure their homes as their new office sanctuary. While the unique setting benefited many people, some suffered mental and physical exhaustion. The question of combining work and leisure becomes cogent. This approach is evident in contemporary office design, which seems to be increasingly built around leisure spaces rather than strictly around desks.Inspired by these contexts, we developed our design project that seeks methodology in combining green space and living space in a non-rhetorical way and where integration of work area is essential. Our core vision is to create a distinctive type of architecture that leverages the power of machine learning and automation while taking into consideration the natural and built-in environment, human interaction, and food production (allotment gardens). This housing will cater to remote workers and their families who seek solace in nature while focusing on their productive and creative pursuits. The overall building program will promote coworking and social gathering spaces for the community. The author mainly focused on b-core structures and module aggregation and helped in machine learning part.

SITE ANALYSIS

The site is in Torre Annunziata, the southeastern city of Naples. It is sitting beside two main wharfs - Molo di Ponante and Molo di Levante, and across to Napoli Centrale Railway station. The sea port served as hub for importing wheat from Russia and exporting dry pasta. Aside from Pompei, it is also within the proximity to Herculaneum and Oplontis villa. The climate in Naples is warm and temperate with rainfall during winter. The average amount of sunshine is at 111 hours per month and the average rainfall is 42 inch.

JOINT COMPONENTS

Since modular construction does not rely on typical structural framing, vertical stacking plays an important role in providing overall building integrity. Each module is stacked through a connector plate directly welded into corner and intermediate columns where it can provide direct path of load. Facades are pre-cladded with corrugated aluminum panels.

The a computational method is to stack the floors within a building envelope. The slots organize the circulation by locating certain modules.Their shapes can be adjusted at each floor to fit the different sizes of modules. The housing modules and shared space modules are assigned to the two sides of the corridors with connectors.

GARDEN AREA

Half Indoor

Half Outdoor

The outdoor space for gardens and indoor space for living is divided in each housing module by solar analysis to optimize the sunlight exposure in private gardens. On the basis of maintenance of the garden ratio as roughly 0.5, the results are selected by the standards of fitness objectives. They are respectively minimizing the degree of structural exposure; minimizing garden fragmentation and maximizing radiation in the garden.

Four L-shaped clusters in four directions are designed and filled in a building envelope. The back side is the shared green space for remote working and socializing. The front side is the housing units alloted with gardens.

One L-shape cluster has three parts. The front is the housing units, the middle is the corridor and the back is the shared space units. The units are combined with several modules in different sizes.

URBAN FABRIC REGENERATION IN OLD TOWNS

Shanghai / Suzhou,China

As the urban development, traditional houses are gradually disappearing, along with which childhood memories of the native are also gone, so this regeneration attempts to revive the old towns' reminiscence. At old times, the shops along the street are full of life or serve as a part of people’s life. There are various stores providing delicate but practical daily necessities, boutiques selling fashion clothes and between them maybe small cafés with bourgeoisie taste. People can wander leisurely from street to street, chatting with their neighbors and vendors after dinner. The design will pick up the feelings of a warm, kind and elegant community by combining tradition and modernity.

Scope Range

As an important cultural heritage, pingjiang Road historical and cultural street has completely retained the style of the ancient town of Jiangnan water town. However, the old city needs to further adapt to the development of modern society, and under the principle of protection, it also faces the needs of partial transformation and renewal. The site of this project is located in the old city, which is an empty space used as a parking lot. It needs further planning and design to make this "scar" be integrated into the overall texture.

Surrounding Buildings Assessment

Building Ages

Although the fabric of traditional Suzhou dwellings in Pingjiang Road historical and cultural Street of Suzhou is relatively intact as a whole, there are still many cases of fabric destruction, and there is the possibility and trend of further destruction. Based on this, the subsequent design is carried out to further clarify the functional positioning of the design.

ANGLING ARCADIA AWAY FROM WORLD

China

Set in the woods of the countryside, the open-ended building provides a shelter for city people to relieve themselves from reality and recall their childhood memories. The building is semi-open, directly connected to paths and trees, the sky and a pond, in which the mountains far away will leap to the eyes. Surrounded by dense groves and misty waters, adults can go fishing in a comfortable way while children will play with flowing water safely. People no longer have to rush through the hustle and bustle of the city, but can enjoy the tranquility of the utopia. The building makes us return to what we thought is like as a kid before.
