ACADEMIC YEAR 2021 - PRESENT
Hello!
My name is Ng Jia Suen. Visual expression and design has been an interest of mine, hence Architecture was my chosen field of study. Before enrolling into the course, I admire Architecture only for its aesthetics. Now, apart from the aesthetics aspect, I admire how Architecture has the power to shape the lifestyle of people living there and understand the importance of architectural detail. To me, the most challenging thing about life as an architecture student is keeping up with the workload. However, having in mind the passion for my work, ensured me in staying focused.

Plexus Wonderland is a place of recreation that is located within Tanjong Pagar Plaza, that intends to bridge with the existing Yan Kit Play field. It aims to open up the space to encourage pedestrian movement to occur and strengthen the intergenerational dialogue between the persisting demography of the site, the elderly and the youth community.
Analysing Tanjong Pagar Plaza, it has a very dense, mysterious and dark spatial quality. The three courtyards also create a lack in legibility for pedestrians as there are no directed paths towards destinations, people are walking in every direction. Pedestrian do not know where the circulation route is bringing them to.
Therefore, this project aims to intervene the tanjong pagar plaza courtyards and part of the carpark to establish a connection between Tanjong Pagar Plaza and Yan Kit Playfield.
The project consists of three key ideas grid structure representing permanence, circulation representing partial permanence and programmatic volumes representing impermanence. ‘Permanence’ is the study of dividing, dispersing and combining the grids. ‘Partial Permanence’ is the planning of the design of horizontal and vertical circulation taking on the concept of the labyrinth. ‘Impermanence’ is the exploration of the diffierent possibilities of the types of form that can be accomodated by the grid structure.

This project explores how we can transform a space via adaptive and kinetic facades to make them more comfortable and livable. The facde of Celestial Cove consist of rotating cubes that are able to open and close depending on the outdoor atmospheric conditions.
The facade is made up of 7X7 and 5X5 cube modules. The 7X7 modules are arranged such that they overlap one creating a dynamic form of layering. The 5X5 modules on the other hand are facing inwards for the users to control manually, creating an interactive facade.
A light sensor is introduced to sense the lux levels of the outdoors and move the modules accordingly using a Light Dependant Resistor and Arduino. The individual cubes also have a wind funneling effect which allows us to succesfully achieve indoor comfort.
There is a parametric interior design with wave-like projections that transforms the interior into a cave-like space which is comforting and soothing for the users. Moreover, the curves are derived from human anatomy and are used as part of the furniture for the users to utilize.
The stark contrast between the linear language of the exterior and organic form of the interior would be able to create different and unique experiences within each space of a multi-storey carpark located opposite of Admiralty MRT station.

The design aims to create aggregation with the repetition of cuboid geometries and function as community that is well integrated.
The site is located at the corner of Shenton Lane and Union Street in Singapore’s Central Area. Responding to the site context, the site is zoned as one part being the more public area as it is facing the MRT and the other half is less public.
Coalescence Cuboids begins with the study of geometries in nature phenomena, the human and plant cells. For instance the epithelial tissue that can be found in our intestines characteristics in cells and the epidermis found in leaves. These cuboidal cells are arranged in clusters with a sense of order and layering effect. The way they divide follows the pattern in the geometric sequence. They slide across one another as they divide. These strategies are applied in the aggregation process. The narrow footprint and extended cantilevering structure overlaps on top of each other. All the units and communal spaces are surrounding one another such that there is visual connectivity between various levels. This can promote social interaction between residents.
The overlapping of cuboids also allow it to become a selfsupporting structure in a way that other than using steel trusses to support the structure, these cuboids are rested and relying on each other to ensure stability.
Global warming has caused rising sea level on the Earth. The residential housings in Singapore are in the high-rise settings and human density is growing vertically due to the scarce amount of land in Singapore as well.
Site chosen is the water body in Pulau Ubin due to its vicinity to the sea and the villages on land which allow connection to the public. Instead of packing people in dense, highrise settings, water body allows horizontal expansion of dwelling units to be more flexible and allow the users to live among nature, away from the hectic city life.
The target users for the design are couples or singles. Due to its location on the sea, a big community with tranquil environment will be an ideal living place for couples or singles to spend their life at when they retire. Young couples and singles are also welcomed to try on a different lifestyle. In the community, users can live, work, play and exchange ideas with each other without much assistance from the outside. Self-sufficiency are also highly deployed where the users can meet their own living demands and earn incomes at the same time.
Under master planning, the platforms towards the periphery will be fully residential (5-sided lily pads), fully communal (4-sided lily pads, and half residential-half communal (6-sided lily pads). The expansion would be horizontal. Instead of packing people in dense, high-rise settings, it seeks to spread them outwards and allow them to live among nature.

Future Schools(Educational Institute) : A Learning Hub
We are living in an environment where the surroundings our behaviours and attitudes will be affected by the environment and vice versa. In the environmental psychology aspect, feel includes emotional wellbeing, look include visual comfort, while listen includes the noise level. Hence I ponder how a theatre school could provide a common space for everyone and allow the individuals to eliminate distractions from the external environment.
This project aims to design future schools Future Schools with the establishment of a Program that will form the focus of the school as a Learning Hub which spaces need to be designed for recreation, information exchange and collaborative engagement to give learners the freedom to think, be creative and interact in a dynamic environment.
Overture breaks away from the conventional user journey. Instead, relate to “storyline” as a metaphor emphasising the connecting flights as the connecting element that representthe interactive spaces. This will engage the users’ journey from milestone to milestone.
Interlocking of spaces are explored to create internal looking spaces and grouping spaces into clusters. Pop up spaces are considered to express the communal collaborative spaces with different volumes for different activities.

In this modern society, millennials are living in a fastpaced environment that leaves them no time to bond with their neighbours. They are also set apart due to the proliferation of technology in today’s age. Surveys have shown that Singaporeans have longer working hours than others in the world, they seldom have time for other forms of entertainment after a tiring day at work. Hence, millennials are unable to feel a sense of belonging and attachment to the place that they are living in, causing them to feel excluded from the community.
Artist Residence aims to provide both the public and its residents a unique neighbourhood identity through the connection with art forms. A research by NAC has shown that Art allows them to connect better with one another. 79% of Singaporeans agreed that the arts strengthen inter-generational dialogue and understanding. Millennials will be brought together through this integration of common interest, specifically visual arts.
Artist Residence took advantage of the proximity of the Goodman Art Centre as an influence on its design. Artist Residence includes programs and spaces designed for art enthusiasts and artists like potters, sculptors, painters, and wood carvers. Furthermore, there are double volume communal art making corner for residents to create art either in public or private and mingle around with their neighbours. Interaction is ensured through zoning the levels for different groups of people based on their individual interests. This brings about the Dakota identity.
Point block that maximise privacy and splitting the block into 2 to allow for natural ventilation.
Splitting the heavy volumes to allow for natural ventilation and creates space for residents to interact with one another.
Units are also spread out to maximise views and cross ventilation.
Void for all storeys except the communal levels to direct residents to overlook towards the communal area from their unit level and also encourages daylight and ventilation.
The concept of the project is embracing nature. Since Lin family wanted a change of environment from Sydney’s urban built up, they would feel calm and peaceful in the house. Having them exposed to greenery and water feature while staying indoor will give them the sanctuary they wanted. It has a sense of openness, but it is still secure and private.
There is a courtyard and water feature in the house and pavilions and veranda in the space to give them the exposure to the greens in the house while staying indoor. I can use louvres and fins to cover up the openings slightly to give the open space a certain level of privacy.
The layout within the form has the public area closer to the entrance and private area is towards the back. Most of the spaces are surrounding the courtyard so wherever the user goes, they will be able to view the courtyard. courtyard. The toilet and wardrobe is placed here closer to the entrance while the bedroom is placed furthest from the door where it can receive the south south west wind.

This project is about assembling a 2V geodesic dome with 3d printed connector hubs. Each group is tasked to design connector hubs that is able to fit in the bamboo struts and build the geodesic dome as a class.
Through the two weeks elective, each group needed to brainstorm ideas on unique connector hubs that can be properly 3D printed and later connect and hold the bamboo struts firmly and flexible enough to allow the assembly of the geodesic dome.
