Preface

In 2020, during the time I was working on my master thesis project, I started the idea that making another portfolio (named portfolio 1+) as a supplemental detail to the first portfolio. The first portfolio is planed to show the overall growth path, skill set, and capability, and present the selected projects that I like most and are important in my previous experience. While this portfolio collects several specific representative tasks.

With the idea of the Portfolio 1+ coming up, there were also other thoughts about a different portfolio collecting my reviews and revised undergrad works. It would be called “Portfolio 0”. I am so excited about this future-past work.

However, I haven’t begun this portfolio 1+ until I finished my final presentation on December 17th, 2020. With the thesis book due on January 10th, I started working on both this Portfolio 1+ and my thesis book simultaneously. Only when I started both ones in the following Christmas week, I found neither of which is easy work to finish in a short time as I thought previously.

So I decided first to establish a framework and pause here as a WIP version. Later when I have time so I can better organize everything. Looking back at what I have completed and revisit some of the unused great design ideas, I find that even fromo errors can I draw a beneficial thing. I start to feel nonrelevant things going together and see career as a whole.

As I finished my thesis book at the end of the January. I resumed this portfolio 1+. Also looking forward to working on “Portfolio 0”. I even have the idea to keep digging into the ideas in my thesis project. But this will be another topic or research to discuss later.

Skylight System

The skylight system of Ningbo museum is a spatial and relational design that involves various parts of the building system. Its form of two-dimensional shape comes from the subtraction of the atrium space, whose void is a transformed pentagonal prism developed both from the continuous wrapping ribbon of the facade and the concept forces gathered from the landscape.

The skylight system includes the subdivisions of the glass panels, the height of the structure and the elevation of the membrane which could be either at the bottom of the structure or somewhere in-between the glass and the bottom of the structure, and the subdivisions of the membrane based on the limitations provided by the material supplier.

The structure connects to both the main structure and the facade mullions at different locations. There are also several areas that need to define interior and exterior by the way of closing the atrium handrails.

1. Skylight division refine

1-finding dimensions for the panels.

While the meaningful relationships to other parts of the building should keep.

The atrium of the building evolved from a taped pentagonal prism. Together with the logic of the ribbon facade, they form two similar concentric (almost) pentagons angled from each other. Each edge of the pentagons has some directional relationship with other parts of the building.

The ring of the two pentagons will be covered with aluminum panels, so the inner boarder will be the curve that restrain the subdivisions. Working with the facade consultant. I tested different dimensions that is suitable for the glass division in various directions.

The preliminary design was a rough sketch following the “direction feeling” of the building. The task of re-designing the skylight subdivisions should find a simple solution that unify the dimension of the panels and make the custom shapes as less as possible.

After I made these simple models, we can see directly and discuss each options. There are several factors: the feeling of direction made by the ratio of the rectangle; which direction is more related the building; safeties; interior visual affects.

According to the structural properties of the steel frames, each option takes different dimensions of the glass panel. They are 1 by 2.5, 1.1 by 2.25, 1.2 by 2; also tested 1.6 by 1.5, and 1.7 by 1.4. Rotate the directions both along the longer side and the shorter side. The narrower rectangle feels more directional.

It feels more comfortable when the direction of the skylight follows the main direction of the two-dimensional shape of the atrium.

Also during the variations of the panel dimensions.

Move the panels as a whole to an extent when the border of the skylight cuts through the least glass panels. No need to cut the glass by the borderline, extend the glass panel under the decoration board.

2. Each layer of the skylight structure There are main beams and secondary beams for the glass subdivision panels. The panels in the area of the frame are aluminum panels. Above the frame area, covered with decoration board. Together they form the skylight exterior surface.

This system is placed on a truss system supported by the building columns and beams. This creates space in the skylight, through which the sight can go into the equipment area in-between the ceiling and the roof floor. So the membrane has three functions: close the gap, a safety measure in case of broken pieces of glass, optimize the interior lighting.

There are several reasons to add membrane functioning together with the skylight. Safety issues and lighting optimization. Because there is a distance between the bottom of the skylight truss and the glass, there are two potential positions or elevation for the membrane.

The membranes are divided and fixed by panel frames follow by dimensions guides provided by the supplier. On the bottom left is the original membrane area, which is the same projection as the skylight. On the right is the previous division of the membrane, according to the division of the skylight.The clients want to expand the skylight to maximize the natural lighting. The southwest part of the skylight is

restrained by the structure of the building, and the expansion is also in the ceiling, which will provide little additional lighting. So the solution will be on the northeast side of the skylight. Considering that there should be some distance to make sure the detailing, the expanded border will be 300 mm offset from the border of the columns.

On the southwest side, offset inside a little bit due to the inclined finish surface of the atrium handrails.

The positions of the glass panels of the skylight can keep the same. Based on the new shape of the membrane area, the divisions of the membrane should be adjusted to the same materials and get better visual effects.

After expanding the skylight and the membrane. The divisions of the membrane should be re-arranged.

The first design option is an adaptation of the original one. But because the width of the unit panel (4.5) is wider than the limitation of the width of the material (3.8m), when the stitching line is in the middle, there will be many waste materials. When the stitching line

is not in the middle, the visual appearance might be less ideal. The second option changed the stitching direction, and every 3.3m there is a stitch, every 9.9m is a membrane unit. But this option is not flexible and there are too many collisions with the membrane border. So it is not ideal either.

The third option tries to make flexible option 2’s grid, by bringing in a small unit.

The dimension of the small unit is based on the calculations of the width limitation of the material. In the end, this design option forms a “9+1” dividing pattern.

But what is not good about this solution is that it creates too many fragments at the corners and borders, which affect the appearance of the membrane.

Option 4 is an option based on option 3, and it moves the units to minimize the numbers of the fragments. The pattern of the option adds a little bit more

complexity. The final design option is based on the second option. Instead of add small units, this option shift half distance of the 9.9 unit as a whole. (The glass on top above the membrane is 1.1m in width.) Option 5 consider comprehensively the former options, keeps the good parts, and got rid of the shortness.

Stitching lines are arranged every 3.3m. Also considered the dimensions of the frames, and how to save more materials. And it is also inherited the simpleness of the original design.

The landscape of the Ningbo museum is an extension of the building; the building is growing from the landscape. Its topology echos to the building form and serves as the building base. The up and the downs of the hills form the paths to each entrance. And the paths surround the green patches for plantings of different scales. And the whole landscape connects to the water. With the help of retaining walls at locations of difference, the balcony and the entrance floor of the building blends into the landscape and forms layers of terraces. Another concept is the continues earth goes into the building through the changes of the landscape and the organization of the retaining walls. The is being displayed by the materiality of the pavement stones.

1. Pavement & guiding line design Due to the free form of the landscape surface, the construction of the pavement needs to be instructed.

The design of the pavement lines is of this purpose.

Instead of letting the materials go out of control, we need to make sure that the final results of the landscape pavement appearance are what we expected.

The goal is to make a simple set of rules that the construction team can easily follow, otherwise, they will need to guess where would we want the bricks to be put. The topology is a continuous surface with patches of greens. So there won’t be many paths that equal its width everywhere. So the whole surface is divided into different areas. And most of the areas are in 3D shapes.

The projections of the 2D lines will deform dramatically when they are applied to the 3D surface. So it must be generated in 3D on the freeform surface itself, then export these 3D lines into 2D drawings.

Pavement area

With the help of the grasshopper script, the edge of any poly surface can move alone the poly surface and generate the line sequence iteratively. Next is to figure out the general rule of generating these lines, by dividing the whole landscape topology into different parts and provide each first line using strategies.

The first strategy is from inside to outside direction begin with the edge of the building. The second strategy is each part of the division has a guiding line as the start and the division line as the end, which could also be the end border for other division parts. The third strategy is that the construction of the pavement starts from the guiding line until it hits the next guiding line, a division line, or the border of the area.

There are two ways of the design the drainage. The first one: when possible, always use slot drainage, which is a more integrated way to the pavement. Second, when bigger drainage is needed, use a stone cover. For both of the types, always combine with guiding line or division line, offset to inside.

The landscape handrails use steel wire. The distance between the wires is 150mm. The pole is made as thin as possible and the distance between the two poles is as wide as possible. In the testing model, the thickness of the pole is 20mm and the distance between each two-pole is 2m. The handrail uses the pipe same as the ones of the parapet.

The landscape handrail should blend into hate landscape, by reducing the visual strength. Material-wise, the color of the pole and the color of the handrail bar are the same as the paving stone material. Form-wise, it should correspond to the up and downs of the landscape, and connects to it naturally. In the area of the safety requirement, it should also be as close to the geometry as possible.

Facade System + The skylight atrium, the landscape, and the terra-cotta facade are three parts from one concept, the continuous flying ribbon, which later developed to inner glass facade and further to the interior and the whole building. It made the facade of the Ningbo museum consisting of two parts, the outer facade made of thousands of terra-cotta tiles and the inner facade of the different types of glass and aluminum panels. The facade is not an isolated system, everything else connects to the facade influences the division and structures it. From the inner and outer facades, derives handrails, parapet, and parapet handrails. The materials of these parts are consistent with the materials of the facade and the building. The form of these parts is also a continuation of the primary concept.

The end of the ramp is far away from the entrance, add steps to let people access the ramp near the entrance, keep a comfortable ratio in front of the entrance area.

To optimize the visitor’s view on the third-floor balcony, add a walking and viewing ramp along the outer edge. The ramp is from the south wing of the building to the east wing of the building, connecting an entrance area to exterior stairs. So there are aspects to consider during the design of the ramp: its slope in relation with the edge of the terra-cotta to make sure the broadening vision; its start-up location to avoid creating narrow space in the balcony; handrail style to integrate into the overall handrail style of the building exterior; its ending platform to cope with the elevation of the stairs.

During the construction of the roof, the ventilation shaft was built more than two meters high from the floor finish. It needs to be demolished and redesigned. There is a certain area of the louver should be provided and a certain regulation about the direction of the exhausted air and space the air need. The ventilation shaft also in the area that next to the barrier-free ramp, so it is better to consider designing them together, and combine them as one design.

The wrongly building shaft was huge so that it blocked the vision of the visitors. And the louver was directly facing the cafe affecting the people who would sit in this area. The new design lowers the shaft and hides the ventilation inside the circled channel, fixing the vision and circulation problems. Adjust the ramp and green area accordingly to integrate the area and optimize the appearance in front of the cafe.

Interior

This part is about spatial design tasks inside the building. During the process of the project, there are many parts of the building that need to be detailed and developed into other forms according to regulations, change of the functionality, or cooperation with other parties.

The digital sandbox is an added feature required by the clients in the need of exhibition. The offices are on the first floor. But since the main entrance leads to the second floor and many areas of the first floor are underground, there is the need to add daylighting the offices and even courtyard for a better working environment. The first curtain is a complicated system involving many issues: from the fire regulation, material supplier to the mullions’ thickness, connection to the facades and ceilings which affects the clearance in each interior space.

1. Digital sandbox

The client requested adding a digital sandbox for the exhibition. There are several possible locations for this. The first one is in the southwest core, there is an irregular but tall space.

Two of the walls of this space are inclined either inward or outward. The base area of the digital sandbox in this space is now 87 sqm, which is not enough for the exhibition requirement (100 sqm), so consider adding vertical displays.

The principles are: 1 get the display area as large as possible while the evacuation code is satisfied; 2 areas of the digital sandbox about 100 sqm. There will also be a platform on the upper floor for the visitor to observe this sandbox.

The diagrams on the upper right show the options that meet the regulation. There are three possible combinations of how different screens put together and form different sizes of the digital sandbox. And based on each combination, the areas are calculated, from which we can compare and decide which one is better than the others.
