What a pioneer Madame Vos-Camy was to take a group of unsuspecting students to France for the first time; thank you for your courage! It’s been over 20 years, and I still remember this program fondly and the many experiences that have shaped my life over the years. From learning to ride the Métro, hanging out at the Internet Café, exploring France and Italy by train and bus, or attempting to ski on the French Alps, my fondest memories are the strong friendships I made and the opportunity to continue expanding my worldview. Looking back, I think of the generosity of my famille d’acceuil, professors who surely put up with some poorly written French papers, and French shop keepers who patiently listened to my garbled French. The grace and care given to me, as a foreigner, is astounding. 1
In a world that can feel divided or living in a culture with civil unrest, study-abroad programs could not be more pivotal to moving towards peace. Getting to know a different culture, living with French residents, students, and business owners brings a new understanding of how our differences in outward culture can often hide the similarities of our inward hearts and thoughts. Late night conversations with locals, other students from across the globe, and my famille d’accueil revealed our analogous worries, joys, interests, and fears. Removing language barriers was critical in my understanding of the vibrant people around me who became less foreign and more familiar as I learned how to speak the language instilled in their everyday lives.
