Welcome to the Halloween edition of the Cover4Caravans newsletter

Hello and welcome to the Halloween edition of the Cover4Caravans Newsletter.

As I write this, we are in the midst of hope for the future with sites opening up and the announcement of an easing of much of the lockdown procedures coming soon. Of course, we must proceed with caution but there is room for optimism at last.

And with Halloween approaching, what better time to face your nervousness head-on by visiting one or two of the country’s most haunted houses? Future visitors can dream of discovering Manchester’s past alongside modern favourites in Ancoats, the world’s first industrial suburb. Starting on Anita Street, visitors can walk between two rows of Victorian houses built for the local workers of the time before seeing Beehive Mill, one of the oldest mills in the area.

Packed with panoramic views, historic sites and glorious gardens, this vista-filled walking route around Edinburgh begins at Camera Obscura.

Located in Outlook Tower, the attraction includes 360-degree city views from the rooftop terrace.

This on-foot adventure through Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns starts at the Georgian House, a restored period town house, before heading to the top of George Street, a shopping highlight and key thoroughfare of New Town. Moving on past Edinburgh Castle, you will be transported back in time when reaching the Royal Mile, which is home to the eerie underground world of the Real Mary King’s Close.

Further industrial highlights can be seen along Murray Street and Jersey Street, where the imperious Paragon and Murrays’ Mills dwarf visitors with industrial majesty. Those longing to live like a local can head to Cutting Room Square, home to beloved pizzeria Rudy’s and neighbourhood bar the Jane Eyre.

Located just across The Mound and into Princes Street Gardens is our next stop, the iconic Scott Monument, which was built to honour writer Sir Walter Scott. You can climb the 287 winding steps to the top of this gothic-style building, for mesmerising views of Salisbury Crags.

Just half a mile away, through the Georgian architecture of Princes Street, is Calton Hill. This gentle peak takes approximately five minutes to climb via a staircase at Regent Road (south-side) or Royal Terrace (north-side), rewarding you with outstanding views of the Scottish Parliament, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Royal Mile.

Next, wanderers can continue onto Rochdale Canal and the tranquil New Islington Marina. If heading back into central Manchester, explorers can complement this heritage tour with a trip to the city’s many vintage shops, such as Blue Rinse Vintage and Pop Boutique, both a 15-minute walk from New Having built up an appetite, explorers can enjoy an indulgent hilltop meal at The Lookout by Gardener’s Islington Marina.

Did you know… ...you should keep a check on your caravan storage site?

With winter upon us, you may have already stored your caravan or motorhome away at a specialist caravan and motorhome storage site, happy that it is safe and sound until next season.

vehicle will be stored – whether off-road on a driveway or on a secure site etc. Your premiums are based on the security measures in place at the storage site.

So, if these change – as in this case, the walls around the storage facility were removed – and your insurer is not informed, any claim you make whilst the ‘van is stored there could be rejected.

It is important, however, that if your ‘van or motorhome is stored at a site, that you make regular checks on the site itself – that way you can ensure it remains secure and, by default, the terms of your caravan insurance remain valid.

What can you do?

For example, there is a caravan storage site near the Cover4Caravan offices. A few years’ ago, the walls around the site were taken down and not replaced – potentially leaving the site open to unwanted attention from thieves and vandals.

CaSSOA discounts

For the people who store their ‘vans at this site, this means that should something happen to their caravan or motorhome whilst it is there, their insurer is well within their rights to refuse any claim.

We recommend that customers who use storage sites keep regular checks on the site to make sure its security – and the validity of your caravan insurance – is not jeopardised.

1. I’m grateful for my health.

2. I have learnt not to take anything or anyone for granted - it can all change in a heartbeat.

3. Other than for there not to have been a pandemic at all, I would change nothing. Everything happens for a reason and a lot of lessons have been learnt through the whole pandemic.

Newton House, Dinefwr, Pembrokeshire, west Wales The gorgeous Dinefwr Estate is a beautiful 18thcentury park landscaped by Capability Brown, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t tales of ghosts and ghouls roaming the grounds.

Newton House, in the centre of the park, has a ghostly visitor each night in the form of Lady Elinor Cavendish. The tale goes that she was betrothed to a man she didn’t love and, when she ran away from him and escaped back to Dinefwr to her family, her suitor strangled her.

Visitors should listen out for muffled voices and watch out paranormal activity from the servants’ basement …

Glamis Castle, Scotland Known as one of the most haunted castles in Scotland, Glamis Castle – 20 minutes’ drive from Dundee and, incidentally, the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother – is said to be home to many spirits…which makes sense when you learn it’s been standing since 1372 and was said to have inspired Shakespeare’s Macbeth. There’s many a spooky tale of historic dark deeds to be heard, especially around Halloween on one of its ghostly tours.

Security devices for your static home October is National Home Security Month (NHSM) which is a timely reminder that static caravans have one major thing in common with more conventional properties – they are both potential targets for burglars and other criminals.

Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to deter these criminals.

A quick review of burglar’s psychology Before looking at some of the concrete measures you might be able to take to better protect your property, it’s worth thinking a little about the typical burglar’s inclination.

Many such criminals are opportunists. That means they are looking for spontaneous opportunities to easily access a static caravan and so steal the contents.

Static home interesting and fun facts!

As a result, they are always on the lookout for things such as open doors and windows, tools left lying around outside (which might be used to gain entry) and potential access points that appear to have no or only limited security.

In 1947 the first static caravans started to appear.

They were very basic, fitted with gas lighting, a coal fire for heating and a single gas burner to cook on - but no bathroom or running water. They were also made from hardboard, so after a few seasons they had a tendency to warp!

Anything you do to visibly secure your caravan is likely to deter large numbers of potential burglars. They will typically move on, looking for caravans that are more vulnerable.

Holiday parks and campsites around the UK generate £9.3bn in visitor expenditure and support over 171,000 employees.

So, it makes sense to install approved professional locks and bolts on all your doors and windows. Make sure that you don’t help burglars unintentionally by leaving tools lying around outside which they might otherwise use against those same security bolts.

There are over 2,500 static caravan parks across the UK. Celebs love caravans too! Retired Boxer Frank Bruno, singer Chris Martin and Formula 1 driver Nigel Mansell all apparently enjoy a caravan holiday!

They may even be able to use infrared sensors to detect movement in the dark and to film the intruders!

Some solutions providers might augment their provision of security systems with regular patrols and rapid response services.
