This past year, four students - Jacquelyn Cao, Justina Miao, Irfaan Karim, and Tayseer Karrossi - took a class called Reintroduction to Writing: The City that Writes, where they learned about racial injustice and activism in the Baltimore community. For their final project, they created the Baltimore Arts magazine, which seeks to break down the stereotypes and disinterest Hopkins students have towards the city beyond the “Hopkins Bubble”.

“We were motivated to create the Baltimore Arts magazine, in response to the jarring realization of the disinterest many peers have towards the Baltimore community. As participants of the Identity & Inclusion workshop ourselves, we wanted to provide further application to the DEI concepts being taught at Hopkins. We realized DEI efforts need to start from our immediate surroundings, which is the city our school stands in. As students who were awestruck by the talented artists of Baltimore, we are a testament to how art can inspire and hope our fellow students have the chance to explore this sector of the city as well. I hope that in these coming years, the beauty of Baltimore culture is what comes to people's minds first, shifting away from negative stereotypes.”

The design of the magazine cover is inspired from the artists that we explored in not only our reintroduction to writing class but also our own trip to explore Baltimore arts. The cover serves as a documentation of our understanding. Through collaging and drawing some of Baltimore’s most prominent artworks, we added our own perspective of Baltimore’s flourishing art scene. The comic inspired style we chose for the magazine cover reflects the vibrant and dynamic nature of Baltimore culture.

DEAN’S MESSAGE It is with great pleasure and pride that I present to you our annual report for the 2023 academic year! As Associate Dean, I am privileged to share the remarkable achievements, growth, and milestones that the Center for Diversity & Inclusion has accomplished throughout this transformative year. This report serves as a testament to the collective efforts of our dedicated staff, exceptional faculty, and talented students who have propelled our center and institution to new heights.

Innovation lies at the heart of our institution, and this year has been no exception. We are thrilled to showcase the introduction of several groundbreaking programs that have further enhanced our educational landscape. One such initiative is the launch of our university's new Gender Affirming Closet—an innovative resource that exemplifies our commitment to inclusivity and support for all members of our community. As one of six awardees from the university’s Diversity Innovation Grant, this unique program provides a safe and welcoming space where individuals can access clothing, accessories, and other items that align with their gender identity, fostering a sense of empowerment and self-expression. Within the first month of launching, the Gender Affirming Closet already collected 1,000+ items from the university and broader community! The Gender Affirming Closet represents a significant step towards creating an inclusive campus environment that celebrates diversity and ensures that everyone feels valued.

Celebrating diversity and promoting global connections, the Center for Diversity & Inclusion took a significant stride this year by organizing an inaugural week-long pre-orientation program specifically designed for international students. Welcoming over 50 students from all corners of the globe, this pioneering initiative aimed to provide a warm and inclusive environment for our international community as they embarked on their academic journey. The program included a diverse range of activities, workshops, and networking opportunities, all carefully crafted to ease the transition into university life and foster intercultural understanding. Through this transformative experience, students had the chance to forge lasting friendships, learn about the unique resources available to them, and acclimate to the cultural nuances of our campus and surrounding community. This remarkable initiative not only exemplifies our commitment to providing exceptional support for our international students but also strengthens our institution's global reputation as a hub for cross-cultural learning and collaboration.

In our continuous efforts to cultivate an inclusive and empowering campus community, we embarked on a significant revamp of our Identity & Inclusion workshop, which now serves as a mandatory component for all incoming first-year and transfer students. This year, we proudly introduced a transformative two-part workshop that allowed students to explore their own identities and engage in profound conversations with their peers. The asynchronous component provided an invaluable opportunity for students to reflect on their personal experiences and perspectives, fostering introspection and self-awareness. Additionally, the synchronous part of the workshop facilitated higher-level discussions, enabling students to connect with their peers and learn from one another's unique journeys. A notable highlight of the workshop was the involvement of our esteemed faculty members, who courageously shared their own identities and the profound impact these identities have had on their personal and professional lives. This revamped workshop not only nurtured a sense of belonging among our students but also empowered them with the tools and knowledge necessary to foster an inclusive and empathetic campus environment.

Together, we have not only weathered the challenges posed by a rapidly evolving educational landscape but also harnessed the opportunities to create positive impacts within our community and beyond. As we move forward, we recognize that our work is never complete, and we remain steadfast in our pursuit of social justice and equality. We express our deepest gratitude to our incredible team, our partners across campus, and our diverse community for their unwavering support and collaboration. Together, we will continue to foster a campus that celebrates and embraces the richness of our differences, propelling us towards a brighter and more inclusive future.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS The Center for Diversity & Inclusion are the category coordinators for 55+ student organizations that are part of the Culture & Identity, Gender & Sexuality, and Religious & Spiritual categories. These student organizations are clustered under membership organizations that collectively support and advocate for the interests of these groups. The membership organizations are as follows:

Disability Inclusion Student Community Outreach DISCO aims to create a unified sense of community for all disabled students across Johns Hopkins.

The organization celebrates the diversity of disability by raising awareness and advocating for the disabled student experience. It is designed to cultivate dialogue, campus and student engagement, and self-acceptance among disabled students and allied organizations to make Johns Hopkins a more equitable and enjoyable community for all.

Female Leaders of Color FLOC aims to provide a space for women of color to establish a sisterhood committed to improving their academic and social environments on campus as well as the surrounding Baltimore community. JHU FLOC’s values include support, service, solidarity, and empowerment. JHU FLOC strives to increase the visibility of women of color within the student body while also providing mentorship and leadership opportunities for its members.

Gender & Sexuality Council The GSC is a collective of student organizations across Hopkins who have a central theme of LGBTQIA+ or women/femme experiences. Our council aims to increase visibility and advocate for the diverse experiences of genders and sexualities.

Interfaith Council The Interfaith Council is a student committee that operates through Religious & Spiritual Life and the Bunting Meyerhoff Interfaith and Community Service Center. It is composed of members of various student religious groups on campus who, despite possessing differing faiths, have one vision in common: to sponsor and work towards establishing a cooperative community spirit among religious groups on the Hopkins campus and to dispel the myths and misunderstandings others may hold about various religions, faiths, and belief systems.

The members of the council are all students who have undertaken the task of establishing a bond of mutual respect and understanding between the groups that they represent.

International Students at Hopkins ISAH provides a diverse community of support for graduate and undergraduate international students at Hopkins. The organization supports international students through three pillars: 1) community-building and social connection; 2) professional development and networking; 3) cultural awareness and international student identity development.

Multicultural Leadership Council MLC is a council that oversees 35+ culturally-based undergraduate student organizations at Johns Hopkins University. The MLC seeks to increase visibility of these organizations, explore identity development and cultural growth, and foster an inclusive sense of community. Through monthly meetings, leaders come together as a way to engage with each other and further develop their leadership as it relates to their cultural identities. The executive board serves as a resource to all groups within MLC through relationship building, cross-cultural collaboration efforts, and providing grants. There are four umbrella groups which embody the inclusive efforts of MLC: Black Student Union (BSU), OLE Latinx Student Group (OLE), Indigenous Students at Hopkins (ISH), and Inter-Asian Council (IAC).

Men of Color Hopkins Alliance MOCHA assists and supports men of color in successfully completing their degree program at the Johns Hopkins University as well as pursuing their future endeavors by fostering a community that encourages brotherhood, academic excellence, and mentorship.

INITIATIVES Black Male Initiative BMI at Johns Hopkins University seeks to increase the retention, graduation, engagement, and overall success and well-being of Black male scholars by providing various educational and social support through academic engagement, peer mentoring, and leadership development.

Gender Affirming Closet The GAC was established as a part of the 2023 Diversity Innovation Grant Cycle. The focus of the GAC is to provide students with an opportunity to explore their gender expression in ways that may otherwise be inaccessible to them due to un-affirming environments and access to adequate funds. However, the GAC and related resources are available to all Hopkins affiliates.

Identity & Inclusion Workshop All undergraduates at JHU are required to complete an Identity and Inclusion workshop during their first year on campus. The workshop is designed to give first-year students a shared experience and shared language to understand their identities within the Johns Hopkins University context. The workshop has been offered at JHU since 2016, after the call in the JHU Roadmap on Diversity and Inclusion for a “mandatory cultural competency workshop for incoming undergraduates.” The workshop takes students through several touchpoints, beginning with a glossary of key terms related to diversity and inclusion, such as allyship, pluralism, and identity, and connects diversity and inclusion to students' home communities and to their new home in Baltimore. This part of the workshop aims to cultivate a strong foundation for further exploration of diversity, equity, and inclusion, with faculty and staff providing insight on these topics throughout the experience.

Mentorship Assistance Peer Program For over 20 years, MAPP has been a premier first-year mentoring program that has served thousands of underrepresented first-year students through 1-on-1 support, academic advice, career development, cultural exploration, and community engagement. Each first-year mentee is paired with an experienced student who provides continual support and will provide programmatic opportunities.

CDI Grants & Awards The Center for Diversity and Inclusion was pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for individuals and student organizations committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the university community.

The grants offered by the Center were intended to support events that aligned with the university's principles on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Whether planning to organize an event or attend one that championed these essential values, individuals and student organizations could apply for grants that empowered them to make a positive impact. This initiative aimed to promote a more inclusive campus culture, one event at a time, and invited interested parties to apply for the grants to be catalysts for meaningful change.

CDI Community Ambassador Award

Recognizes an undergraduate Junior or Senior student who has dedicated their tenure at Hopkins to impact and/or transform the JHU community through their brand of intersectional leadership. This is achieved through their direct work leading organizations, initiatives, and/or impact opportunities. The recipient of this award models exceptional reach across the communities they serve and through an inclusive lens.

Recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student who contributes significantly to diversity, equity and inclusion by engaging through acts of service/community programs that improve the lives of others. The recipient of this award exhibits characteristics of leadership, social responsibility, advocacy/allyship, and influences change agency within those communities.

The Owens-HallBilgrave Award

CDI Student Organization of the Year

Recognizes a faculty or staff member dedicated and committed to the diversity and inclusion education of the campus community. This award is named after three former African American administrators who were strong advocates for the full participation of students in campus leadership.

The recipient of this award will have demonstrated investments in student leadership, mentorship, outreach, and advocacy.

This award is given to a student organization that has exemplified true leadership around the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion. They are providing support through creating a sense of community and belonging for their members, while embodying the spirit of education, advocacy, and solidarity with the larger JHU community.

Heritage Month Celebrations

Pride Parade

Hundreds of Johns Hopkins affiliates gathered June 24 to rally around the LGBTQIA+ community by marching in the annual Baltimore Pride parade. The parade began near the Homewood campus at 33rd and Charles streets, so the JHU contingent gathered at the courtyard outside the Center for Diversity & Inclusion to hand out t-shirts and take photos before the parade kicked off. The festivities wrapped with a block party at Station North.

Latinx Heritage Month Luncheon

About 150 attendees—students, faculty, and staff took part in Johns Hopkins University's first-ever Latine/x and Hispanic Heritage Celebration luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Scott-Bates Commons on the Homewood campus. The event, hosted by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, was designed to bring together those at Hopkins who identify as Latine/x or Hispanic and foster a sense of connection and belonging. Participants heard from keynote speaker Inez Stewart, senior vice president of human resources for Johns Hopkins Medicine, and took part in an Afro-Peruvian dance lesson. They also heard from representatives for Latino Alliance, an employee resource group, and OLÉ, a Latinx student organization.

Indigenous People’s Day Pow Wow

To honor Indigenous Peoples' Day, the Johns Hopkins community held its fourth annual powwow event, with food, singing, and dancing on the university's Homewood campus. Sponsored by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Indigenous Students at Hopkins, the Center for Indigenous Health, and Peabody Student Affairs, the powwow invited tribes from across the Americas, including from Canada and Bolivia, to participate.

Hayden Fox, a senior at Johns Hopkins who is involved in the Indigenous Students at Hopkins organization, said the tribes celebrated with many different styles of dance, including jingle, traditional, grass, and smoke dancing. All community remembers were invited to join in the celebrations as a way to connect and learn.

LGBTQ History Month Drag Brunch

The Center for Diversity & Inclusion hosted a vibrant and inclusive drag brunch celebration to commemorate LGBTQ History Month on October 28. The event was a joyous occasion that brought together people from diverse backgrounds to honor the rich history and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Attendees were treated to an array of dazzling performances by talented drag queens and kings, accompanied by delicious brunch fare, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere for all to enjoy while celebrating the spirit of acceptance and equality.

International Education Week

During International Education Week, the Center for Diversity & Inclusion orchestrated a diverse range of events to foster global understanding and cultural exchange. Dr. Hsin-Ya Tang, an esteemed scholar, led an insightful symposium exploring the importance of cross-cultural education and its impact on global cooperation. Attendees also had the opportunity to indulge in a delightful tea tasting, discovering the rich flavors of different cultures.

To support international students in their academic and professional pursuits, the center hosted practical workshops on resume writing and interviewing tips, equipping them with essential skills for success in the job market.

Black History Celebration

The Center for Diversity & Inclusion, Peabody Student Affairs, and Black Faculty Staff Association co-sponsored an event Feb. 28 at the George Peabody Library to celebrate and highlight historical and contemporary musical influences within the African diaspora. The event featured performances by Peabody Institute students, the Morgan State University Choir, and Lady Brion of Baltimore Voices, as well as a keynote speech from Marco K. Merrick, chief of equity and environmental justice for the Baltimore City Department of Public Works.

It also included an expo of local Black-owned businesses and services.

During Disability Pride Awareness Month, the Center for Diversity & Inclusion organized a series of empowering events to celebrate and raise awareness.

They invited an inspiring speaker who shared their personal journey and advocacy for disability rights, fostering a sense of unity and understanding among attendees. The center also set up pop-ups in the quad, showcasing interactive displays and information about various disabilities, promoting inclusivity and dispelling misconceptions. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to express their creativity and support by making DIY buttons with empowering messages, creating a tangible symbol of solidarity and pride within the community. These festivities aimed to educate, uplift, and promote a more inclusive and accepting campus environment.

Women’s History Month Panel

Female leaders from International Students at Hopkins (ISAH), Female Leaders of Color (FLOC) and Inter-Asian Council (IAC) partnered to hold the Women’s History Month discussion panel on March 31. Led by ISAH Undergraduate Co-leads Shajae Pinnock and Betul Celiker, the discussion centered on themes of equity and intersectional identities and how these are expressed both in Hopkins and around the world. In addition to the ISAH student leaders, the panel included President of FLOC Indira Summerville, Vice-President of FLOC Cierra Gladden and President of IAC Isabel Veloso.

APIDA Heritage Month Celebration

To celebrate and honor the accomplishments of the Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American community, at Hopkins, the Center for Diversity & Inclusion hosted a luncheon event on Thursday, April 20. Nationally, Asian/Pacific Heritage Month is recognized in May; the Hopkins event allowed community members to celebrate together prior to the end of the academic year. Frank Wu, a Hopkins alumnus and president of Queens College, City University of New York, gave a keynote speech that focused on the diversity of the Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American population, and the duality of the invisibility and hypervisibility in the population. Wu also highlighted the promise that Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American youth hold, saying they are poised to make substantial contributions to American society and history.

Religious & Spiritual Life A department within the Center for Diversity & Inclusion, Religious & Spiritual Life promotes and supports spiritual development, theological reflections, religious tolerance and social awareness among students, faculty, and staff within our Johns Hopkins community. “Since working at the Interfaith Center, I have gained so much valuable insight about a variety of faith traditions that I was never exposed to before. There have been plenty of resources available for me to learn more about some of my friends’ religions. Although I hold my own set of religious beliefs, the Interfaith Center has been a great space to engage in meaningful conversations with others who share different ones. One of my responsibilities is to help open up the building upstairs and help some of my Muslim friends set up for their Friday Prayer service. In doing this, I was able to learn a lot about what this service means to them and how it helps build a sense of community."

Throughout the challenges and changes of college life during the pandemic, the RSL has remained a comforting constant. Our chaplain Kathy has not only been a wonderful boss, but a source of support, advice, and care. I cherish our many couch talks in her office.
