Our current system of governance is shaped by patriarchal traditions and often excludes the voices of women and those challenging dominant narratives. Opportunities for critical thought are shrinking—especially as some of the authors we’ll study are banned in parts of the U.S. Yet figures like Anna Julia Cooper, a former slave and pioneering essayist, offer lasting inspiration. Her 1892 writings helped lay the foundation for feminist thought. The essays in this course will push us to question, reimagine, and understand power structures through themes like the American Dream, interest convergence, and ambition—offering critique, clarity, and hope for a more just future.
