THIS ISSUE OF JHSTYLE, ELEVATED THINKING, SALUTES THOSE WHO TEACH US TO EXPLORE NEW BOUNDARIES, RESPECT OUR NATURAL SURROUNDINGS, AND CHALLENGE US TO BE BETTER COMMUNITY AND WORLD CITIZENS. While proofreading this issue, I became quickly immersed, and was soon reminded of our own family’s experiences with education in the valley. From Shannon and Garrick Hart’s introduction to mountaineering and climbing, to the teachers and coaches who influenced each of our daughters, this community embraces a higher level of learning.

As I continued reading, my smile grew as I was introduced to Valley Bookstore owner Steve Ashley, and Mary Flamino, youth services manager at the Teton County Library. Like these two, our youngest is enamored with libraries, bookstores, and the written word.

We profile Teton Pass ambassador Jay Pistono, who has been instrumental in our extreme skier daughter’s awareness of backcountry skiing etiquette and safety. To him I can only say a sincere “thank you.”

We also write about retired Jackson Hole High School art teacher Greg Houda.

Mr. Houda, I can’t tell you how much you influenced not only my daughter, but so many students over the years. We wish you the best in your retirement.

Many Teton athletes get their start on local ski slopes, and skiers and boarders always benefit from having a good instructor. At Grand Targhee Resort, Mark Hanson leads the ski and snowboard school where he connects with the program’s many students, often making lifelong friends. In Jackson, Don and Gwenn Wadsworth spend their time helping people master the art of the skinny ski through cross-country ski clinics and classes.

But it’s not all about outdoor learning in Jackson. Hayley Kleyman’s tutoring and college consulting companies help students master school subjects and prepare for college, with everything from one-onone tutoring, to girls’ math camps, to pro bono college workshops.

Retired obstetrician and gynecologist Annie Fenn explores the art of healthy eating and shares her knowledge with those who read her blog, Jackson Hole Foodie, and magazine and newspaper articles, in addition to the workshops and classes she teaches.

Students can delve into their creative sides through the Art Association of Jackson Hole’s hands-on classes and programs. Dedicated teachers, like glassworking instructor Amy Perkins, enthusiastically help budding students turn raw materials into masterpieces.

And, of course, this issue of JHStyle wouldn’t be complete without covering the fantastic local teachers and administrators who spend their days teaching and inspiring the valley’s young people, including retired art teacher Greg Houda and Teton County School District Superintendent Gillian Chapman.

FROM BOOKS TO BELAY DEVICES, THERE’S A LOT TO LEARN IN THE TETONS. IN ADDITION TO A VARIETY OF EXCELLENT SCHOOLS, INCLUDING A BRANCH OF CENTRAL WYOMING COLLEGE, THE VALLEY IS HOME TO EARLY LITERACY PROGRAMS, ART EDUCATION CLASSES, AND ONE OF THE BEST CLASSROOMS FOR OUTDOOR LEARNING ANYWHERE: THE TETONS.

Education in the Teton region can consist of anything from spending a day curled up with a good book, to attending a day of classes, taking a naturalist-guided snowshoe hike in Grand Teton National Park, or hiring a world-class backcountry ski guide at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort to learn how to safely enjoy the outdoors.

After learning the art of mountaineering by trial and spine-tingling error, teachers Garrick and Shannon Hart branched out from their classroom teaching jobs at the high school and middle school to start their schools’ mountaineering clubs. The clubs safely expose young people to the mountains, helping kids learn how to do everything from scaling the Grand Teton to navigating avalanche-prone slopes and assessing backcountry terrain.

Jay Pistono also works to help people stay safe from avalanches and other mountain hazards in his role as Teton Pass ambassador. Pistono spends his days atop Teton Pass

educating backcountry skiers and other visitors about the area and encouraging them to enjoy it safely, while also conserving and protecting a place he and many others hold dear.

Valley Bookstore owner Steve Ashley combines his love of the outdoors with his passion for books, even making time to read by bringing a book along with him for the chairlift when he’s out for a day on the slopes. Jane Lavino, education and exhibits curator at the National Museum of Wildlife Art, also strives to meld education with the outdoors as she cultivates programs to educate museum visitors about many different aspects of the natural world.

Living in the Tetons often means combining a love of education with a passion for adventure. For Jacksonites, these things are closely intertwined. Every day is an adventure, and every day is a chance to learn something new, whether in the classroom or on the ski slopes. n

AFTER A FULL DAY TEACHING, MOST PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO GO HOME, BUT THAT’S NOT THE CASE FOR GARRICK AND SHANNON HART. THEY VOLUNTEER TO SPEND EVEN MORE TIME WITH THEIR STUDENTS BY LEADING TRIPS AND ORGANIZING ACTIVITIES FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL MOUNTAINEERING CLUBS. “I was surprised when I started teaching at the high school here,” Garrick says. “You could learn everything except the two things that make the town famous: Alpine climbing and backcountry skiing. They’re sports that have a dangerous learning curve without close supervision and mentorship.”

Rod Newcomb, the founder and owner of American Avalanche Institute at the time, partnered with Garrick so that every kid taking physics at the high school was being exposed to the classroom part of a Level I Avalanche Course.

After Garrick received his teaching degree, the couple began looking for a mountain town with climbing opportunities that needed a high school physics teacher. Jackson Hole High School was the first to respond, KIDS TO ENJOY THEIR and the Harts moved to the WATCHING THEM GROW region, sight unseen.

Some students opted to complete the training by going out into the winter for the field portion of the curriculum as well.

From those field days, the Jackson Hole Mountaineering Club was born.

Hart’s motivation for teaching kids to climb stemmed from his own experience. After playing football in college, he was looking for a sport that would keep him busy and fit. He saw some people climbing and decided he wanted to give it a try, soon convincing his wife, Shannon, to join him.

“We bought a rope and Freedom of the Hills and started climbing,” he says, referring to the classic introductory climbing book published by Mountaineers Books.

“We learned by trial and error,” Shannon adds. “That results in a long learning curve.”

But the Harts say they wouldn’t recommend learning to climb the way they did. Garrick says most of their gear purchases came after they terrified themselves on one climb or

At that time, Shannon was home with their children. After the kids moved out of babyhood, she finished up her schooling and started teaching art at Jackson Hole Middle School where she helped start a mountaineering club for younger kids.

"Teaching kids to enjoy their passion, and watching them grow while experiencing the outdoors, is very rewarding," Garrick says.

The Harts are quick to point out the other people who have worked to make the mountaineering clubs a success, but there’s no doubt their dedication and enthusiasm have created a unique program for Jackson teens. n

Growing up in Jackson, Ashley used to frequent the bookstore in town. It used to be the Valley Shop, which sold books and art supplies before transitioning to books and camera equipment.

“I spent a good amount of time in there,” he recalls. “I can remember going in and buying every Ian Fleming James Bond novel that they had and ordering the rest.”

“It has almost gone out of business three times but never actually got there,” he says. “We’re not perfect. We’re not growing, but we’re not shrinking.”

JAY PISTONO DOESN’T SEE HIS ROLE AS TETON PASS AMBASSADOR AS A JOB. “THE PASS IS AN ADVENTURE,” HE SAYS. Pistono has held the role of ambassador for 12 years now, working at Teton Pass, a popular spot for backcountry skiing in the Bridger-Teton National Forest along Highway 22 near the Wyoming–Idaho state line.

The idea of designating Pistono as official Teton Pass Ambassador came to fruition when U.S. Forest Service program manager Linda Merigliano and Friends of Pathways executive director Tim Young approached Pistono about the position. He was already regularly traversing the area with his dog, Molly, picking up litter and others' dog waste, so Merigliano and Young proposed making his regular routine into an official job.

When Pistono began skiing Jackson in the 1970s, he started purchasing annual passes to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Then, he found work as a ski instructor so he wouldn’t have to buy a pass anymore. But soon, he began traveling into the backcountry, embracing its wildness and affordability. His concern for Teton Pass was born early on, and he first started talking to people about caring ABOUT THE PASS for it as early as the mid-1980s.

But for the most part, Pistono is excited by his job every day.

He’s also taken his work on the road, traveling to places like Salt Lake City, Utah, and Denver, Colorado, to promote the idea of ambassador programs and sharing a model other communities can use.

As Teton Pass ambassador, Pistono’s goals include greater avalanche awareness, encouraging carpooling and considerate parking, proper dog etiquette and clean-up, and sharing the importance of the pass along with the attention and care required to sustain it. A dozen or so reliable volunteer assistants help him attain these goals.

Pistono also works closely with agencies like Teton County Search and Rescue, Wyoming Department of Transportation, Wyoming State Highway Patrol, and the Teton County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the general public.

Today, Pistono works to educate people about Teton Pass etiquette, and he notes that a few visitors can be disagreeable.

While many respect the area and traverse with care, some take up two parking spaces or leave dog waste or trash behind.

Pistono's quiet passion for exploring the area is anchored by his humbleness and respect for the wild landscape.

The wildlife focus of the museum is also dear to Lavino. When she and her husband, Ed Lavino, moved to the area nearly three decades ago, they built a home in the Buffalo Valley east of Moran. They have since moved to town, but during the years they lived on the one-acre property, they relished the time they spent spotting moose, elk, deer, bison, coyotes, bears, and birds right outside their door.

Her focus on education is evident as she walks through the museum. Visitors frequently ask her everything from the difference between a bison and a buffalo to how bronze sculptures are made, and she appreciates the opportunity to share her knowledge. She particularly enjoys chatting with visitors in the museum’s open studio.

“I love to come to open studio and spend time talking to people and getting a sense of who our visitors are,” she says. “This museum is particularly valuable for education because people are so curious.”

When she’s not working, Lavino is often focusing on her own artwork, particularly printmaking. She carefully carves blocks of rubber into birds, feathers, bears, fish, flowers, blueberries, and other nature-inspired images and creates ink compositions with them, decorating note cards, tea towels, aprons, and baby onesies with her artwork. A few times a year, she’ll sell them at small fairs and bazaars.

A PASSION for PLACE Teton Science Schools Transform Lives

AMY LORENZ WAS IN THE SEVENTH GRADE WHEN SHE FIRST VISITED THE RUGGED LANDSCAPE OF JACKSON HOLE DURING A TETON SCIENCE SCHOOLS FIELD ECOLOGY PROGRAM. SHE REMEMBERS THE JOY OF HIKING IN THE BACKCOUNTRY WITH HER FELLOW CAMPERS AND LEARNING ABOUT THE AREA’S FLORA AND FAUNA.

Amy Lorenz received her master's degree through Teton Schools' graduate program, and she now works at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology.

But for the Pennsylvania native, the program also left a deeper mark.

“I think that’s when I first realized there was a place for this sort of nerdy naturalist inside of me,” Lorenz says. “I met a lot of other kids like me.”

The organization got its start in the 1960s when a science teacher named Ted Major came up with a novel way to teach the natural sciences. Students would learn best, he thought, by actually being out in nature. His idea was to “expand the classroom into the outdoors,” as Teton Science Schools officials like to say.

That is an ethos she can trace back to her time with Teton Science Schools. For five decades, people from all walks of life have enjoyed the organization’s programs, learning about the Jackson Hole region's ecology and natural systems through hands-on, experiential learning.

Today, Teton Science Schools operates seven different programs, including everything from summer field education programs to a pre-K through 12th grade private educational institution known as the Journeys School.

Most recently, in 2015, the nonprofit merged with The Murie Center and continues to run its conservation and education programs in Grand Teton National Park. The organization even runs a wildlife tour program for tourists, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with herds of bison and elk in the company of a trained naturalist guide. >>

But Teton Science Schools is still best known for its work with youth.

Jenny Baysa is yet another one of the school’s accomplished alumni. Like Lorenz, she first visited Jackson Hole through a summer program with the nonprofit in 2012. Coming from Los Angeles, the experience was foreign to her in nearly every way.

“We didn't really get to go outside of our comfort zone in Los Angeles,” she says. But her time in the backcountry of Jackson Hole opened her eyes.

“When I first got to Jackson I wasn't considering studying wildlife,” she says.

“Once I got there, I started realizing it was really something I was interested in.”

Today, Baysa is studying wildlife biology at the University of California-Davis.

Both Baysa and Lorenz were able to use Teton Science Schools programs to refine their passions and turn their love of outdoor education into something they could share with others.

“Teton Science Schools provided me with the space to take this disorganized interest I had and put it together to work in a meaningful way in education,” Lorenz says. n

MATH POWER Tutoring Entrepreneur Inspires Local Students WORDS Ben Graham | IMAGE David Bowers

LAST SUMMER, A GROUP OF GIRLS HUDDLED AROUND A TABLE AT THE JACKSON HOLE COMMUNITY SCHOOL, DEEP IN CONCENTRATION. THE GIRLS, RANGING FROM FIRST GRADE TO SIXTH, WERE PLAYING A GAME OF CARDS AND RIGOROUSLY WORKING ON THEIR MULTIPLICATION SKILLS. IN THE BACK OF THE ROOM, SEVERAL FIRST GRADERS PLAYED SHOP, BUYING SNACKS WITH A SACK OF COINS AND COUNTING UP DOLLARS AND CENTS.

The scene was the girls-only math camp put on by Jackson Hole Tutoring. More than 50 students participated in two week-long sessions.

“We’re trying to inspire them at a young age, telling them they can do this,” says Hayley Kleyman, founder of the tutoring enterprise.

And she should know. Kleyman’s love of math only grew as she became older and delved deeper into the subject. She is confident that other girls can have a similar experience with a little help.

Kleyman studied math at the University of Wisconsin and has been tutoring since her undergraduate days. After school, she continued working with young students one-on-one as a way to make extra money.

When she returned to her hometown of Jackson in 2014, she continued following her passion by founding her company, Jackson Hole Tutoring. Initially, she didn’t do any marketing for her new business. But slowly, through word-ofmouth, it grew.

Today, she can barely keep up. Kleyman employs 12 tutors and works with a wide range of students in terms of both age and ability. While the girls math camp is close to her heart, it is just a small part of the business. Kleyman’s days consist of training tutors, organizing lessons, balancing spreadsheets, and sitting down with students to go over math problems. Working with kids is what she loves most.

She also enjoys working with older students and helping them prepare for college. Pennants from different colleges Kleyman has visited hang on her office walls. She hopes her students will one day be able to attend these schools or one of the thousands of other options available.

This is why Kleyman, along with Sarah Phocas, co-founded Jackson Hole College Consulting in 2016. Recently, they offered a summer college prep workshop pro bono to students at the Teton Literacy Center. They are helping five teenagers navigate the application process, from test prep work to figuring out how to finance a degree. All of them would be the first in their families to go to college.

Kleyman believes they will succeed.

“They have no idea that this is so attainable,” she says. n

“You can’t set it down and come back to it later,” she says.

“You have to finish it all at once. Even if it’s 120 degrees in the studio, you have to power through and finish. You can’t worry about sweat getting in your eyes. You’re really in the moment.

It’s a 2,000-degree medium and within 15 seconds, it’s cold.

You have to focus and pay attention—it keeps you busy.”

Perkins has worked with glass for 15 years, and she currently teaches glassworking classes for the Art Association of Jackson Hole. For the past three years, she has taught summer classes and camps for kids as well as adult workshops, helping people learn how to create beads, pendants, miniature ornaments, and tiny glass critters with a torch. Her favorite creations are the ones that make people smile.

“I like humorous, cartoonish animals,” she says. “My favorite things to make are ladybugs, frogs, cats, and fish, but I really like to make everything because it is all challenging and fun.”

She attended the Pilchuck Glass School near Seattle and took numerous glass workshops there, learning glassblowing, hot casting, and other techniques. She also has a bachelor’s of fine art in glassblowing from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.

Before coming to Jackson, she worked at a fast-paced production studio in Maryland specializing in clear glass. She cranked out many copies of the same object—such as a particular style of drinking glass—making up to 60 pieces daily.

“I learned a lot there, but I missed seeing colors,” she says.

Perkins also worked at a lighting company in Texas, creating anything and everything lighting-related out of glass including sconces, cylindrical outdoor lights, and lampshades, as well as projects at large office buildings in Dallas and Houston. Additionally, she spent several summers in Skagway, Alaska, teaching glassblowing to cruise ship passengers who stopped at the port.

In addition to teaching glassworking, Perkins owns You Dirty Dog, a pet grooming service, and is a snowboard instructor at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

She also creates her own glass projects that she sells on Etsy and at Raven Lunatics in Alpine. She’s currently working on a landscape sunset series, combining different colors of glass to create sunsets. Perkins loves experimenting with color, especially when she’s not quite sure what will happen.

“A lot of colors will react with each other and create a completely different color where they meet,” she explains.

The interplay of colors and unpredictability of glass can be a challenge, but for Perkins it’s an exciting one. From creating beautiful sunset images to cute critters, every creation she makes is just another opportunity to play with fire and find something to smile about. n

And, thankfully for local food-lovers, she began to write. Her blog, JacksonHoleFoodie.com, now features recipe after recipe for homemade huckleberry jams, ricotta gnocchi,

and other delights. Her Sicilian roots shine through with rustic Italian recipes reminiscent of her heritage.

“I like to cook from the season, which can be really hard in the winter,” she says. “I love to cook simple rustic cuisine, mostly Italian, but I definitely like to delve into other cultures.”

For the past six years, Fenn has been exploring new recipes, chatting with local chefs, and writing for her blog, local magazines, and newspapers. But she soon realized she needed something more.

“Writing about the food culture is really fun and experiencing it is so exciting, but something was missing,” she says. Fenn needed to help her community stay healthy.

Earlier this year, Fenn heard about a study that came out of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago about the MIND Diet (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay), which reduced the risk of cognitive decline in people who ate “brain-healthy” foods.

She was inspired by the study’s results and started looking for ways to help the growing percentage of the populace at risk for dementia.

Fenn reached out to friend and fellow doctor Martha Stearn at the St. John’s Institute for Cognitive Health in Jackson. As fate would have it, Stearn was already working to create an eight-week course for people hoping to reduce their cognitive risks called “Brain Works,” which covers mindfulness, food choices, meditation, and more. Fenn collaborated with Stearn and now teaches cooking classes based on the MIND Diet.

“The study is evidence-based which, as a doctor, really excites me,” Fenn says.

“Mostly, I am teaching how to eat and cook with whole foods and stay away from processed foods as well as buy organic as much as possible.”

She taught a Brain Works class in Chicago, and she will soon travel to Rancho La Puerta Spa in Tecate, Mexico, serving as guest chef for the cooking school, which boasts the oldest organic garden in North America. Her program there will focus on wellness and longevity.

“I am really excited about getting back in the business of helping people with their health,” she says. “If I can do it through teaching people how to cook and eat, then I think that is amazing.” n

As the judges proclaimed the Mexican team the winner and called out “Oscar Ortega,” he felt hot tears of joy streaming down his cheeks and a rush of indescribable emotion. “That feeling stays with you for life,” he says.

Ortega is a dynamo, busy and smiling as he orchestrates the art of chocolate-making. He is fluent in four languages and is as much of a perfectionist as he is a creative force.

Born in Mexico City, he credits his love of food to his beloved mother, who was a professional psychiatrist and yet still found time to prepare a home-cooked meal each day.

He remembers helping her in the kitchen as a young boy when she remarked, “You are going to be a chef one day.”

As a boy, he often traveled around Mexico with his father, visiting the colorful markets and delighting in the adventure of looking for new or interesting foods. From an early

age, he particularly loved finding new chocolate shops and was always in search of sweet treats.

Chocolate, Ortega notes, is one way in which he honors his Mexican heritage since the Aztecs originally discovered chocolate in Mexico. Now, when creating his delicious desserts for CocoLove, he calls upon his heritage by serving up celebrated delicacies such as Mexican hot chocolate, chipotle chocolate pudding, and tres leches cake.

In his early 20s, Ortega moved from Mexico to Europe and enrolled in Cast Alimenti, a culinary school in Italy. As he studied to become a master in Italian cuisine, the Italian pastry team was getting ready to compete in Coupe du Monde de la Patisserie, a French pastry competition. That year, Italy won and Ortega fell in love with the world of desserts and competitive cooking.

“When I saw the perfection and the creativity in the desserts…

I knew this is what I wanted to do,” he recounts. He changed his major to pastry immediately.

Ortega found his way from Europe to Jackson by happenstance and stayed for the beautiful scenery, skiing, and for love—a trifecta of reasons many Jacksonites can relate to.

CocoLove, which opened its doors in 2012, is reminiscent of a modern European café, and passersby wander in for what Ortega deems “the perfect bite of sweet.”

Choices like the decadent espresso mascarpone cheesecake, perfectly rose-colored raspberry sorbet, and sparkling, jewel-like chocolates make walking away with just one a nearly impossible feat.

In addition to owning CocoLove, Ortega owns a workshop and storefront named Atelier Ortega where all of his chocolate is handcrafted.

The artisanal chocolates tell an international culinary story with names such as “three tea,” “honey balsamic,” “wasabi white chocolate,” and “chipotle.” With such inexhaustible variety, one has to ask: Which is the chocolate master’s favorite?

Ortega smiles as he says, “Every single thing I create is something that I am very proud of. My favorite chocolate? It is the last one I have created.” n

It provides affordable winter sports opportunities to kids and their families. TVSEF offers programs in Alpine racing, freeride, snowboarding, and Nordic skiing, with competitors traveling throughout the Rocky Mountain region, in addition

TETON WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTER People often call the Teton Wildlife Rehabilitation Center if they find an animal they believe may need assistance, such as a young deer curled up alone in tall grass. The center fields these calls and often ends up educating people about animal behavior and the fact many of these animals are actually safe and just awaiting their parent’s return. In addition to this type of educational work, the organization also provides public and private educational programs and is working to build community partnerships.

The organization is currently seeking land where it can build a permanent facility to rehabilitate wildlife harmed by human actions and provide an internship program. Ultimately, the organization plans to incorporate a captive breeding program within 10 years to help restore endangered and threatened native species. TetonWildlife.org

GILLIAN CHAPMAN COMES FROM A FAMILY OF TEACHERS. BORN IN 1915, CHAPMAN'S GRANDMOTHER LEFT SCHOOL DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION TO CARE FOR HER SIBLINGS AND WORK. “She’s probably the best teacher I’ve ever known, and she was never able to go beyond eighth grade,” Chapman says.

Gillian Chapman’s father, Ted Chapman, taught classes and served as business department chair at Ottawa University in Kansas. Her mother, Ginny Chapman, taught home economics in the 1960s. Back then, pregnant women weren’t allowed to teach so when she started a family she left the vocation.

Around the age of 12, Gillian Chapman met a girl who was deaf. She learned some sign language to communicate but wanted to know more, so her mom enrolled her in a community college class.

The school, however, wouldn't let children attend. Instead, Chapman's mother ended up taking the class for her and went on to get a master's degree in teaching deaf and hard of hearing students. Ginny Chapman taught until the age of 70.

Gillian Chapman, now Teton County School District’s superintendent, has followed in her family’s footsteps.

She grew up in Kansas, earning a bachelor’s degree in French at Pepperdine University in California before she went to work for Applebee’s, overseeing 200 new store openings during a time of rapid growth for the company. It was here that she discovered her love for teaching as she worked to create the training modules used to ensure consistency at all the restaurants.

When she went back to school for a master’s degree at the University of Central Missouri, she studied curriculum and instruction. After student teaching, she knew she wanted to be in a classroom. She started teaching full-time as soon as she finished school.

At first, Chapman taught middle school students and then switched to high school French. While she loved the impact she had on kids, she felt it could be even bigger if she worked with teachers and students. She started chairing committees, working on a school improvement plan, and taking on more leadership roles, guided by the goals of staying open-minded, creative, and taking risks.

When she started on her doctorate in leadership and administration at St. Louis University she was working as an assistant principal but, by the time she completed her degree, she was a middle school principal.

In 2009, Chapman gave a conference presentation in Jackson and fell in love with the area. Years later, she came across a job posting with the Teton County School District.

She’d recently made a presentation on leadership, change, and taking risks, and realized she’d been in the Shawnee Mission Unified School District for 20 years. She loved what she was doing but needed to try something else and was ready for the next challenge. In June 2015, Chapman arrived in Jackson as the district’s new superintendent.

In this role, she embraces change. Education is evolving, and Chapman is willing to experiment to find out what works best for kids.

“I’m not afraid to say ‘Let’s give that a try,’” she says. “We can’t continue to do things the way we’ve always done them.

WHEN PHIL LEEDS WAS FINISHING UP COLLEGE IN SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA, HE WAS ITCHING TO GET BACK TO THE TETONS. HE HAD SPENT SUMMERS WORKING AT COLTER BAY LODGE, AND HIS FRIEND, JEFF CRABTREE, HAD JUST OPENED A SHOP CALLED SKINNY SKIS IN JACKSON. AS SOON AS LEEDS FINISHED SCHOOL, HE HEADED BACK TO TOWN AND BEGAN WORKING WITH CRABTREE, SOON BECOMING A CO-OWNER. Now, 40 years later, Leeds still co-owns the shop but with a new partner, Scott O’Brien.

to the community and being involved with environmental and youth-oriented groups and nonprofits.

“What could be better than being involved with activities you’re passionate about from the business side and sharing them with other people?” Leeds says.

“Our relationship with the community is really important,” Phil Leeds says.

The shop’s name alludes to cross-country skis and for Skinny Skis’ first three seasons it was only open fall through spring, focusing on the winter sport. But in 1977, Leeds and Crabtree were able to expand their focus to summer goods as well, delving into hiking, backpacking, climbing, and running gear.

Leeds was an avid rock climber for the shop’s first 20 years, but now he gravitates more toward cross-country skiing and fly-fishing.

“In winter, I love cross-country skiing and all the dimensions of it,” he says. “Touring, skate skiing, and backcountry skiing.”

He spends time product testing in the field and tries to spend at least two days outdoors each week. He and his wife of 32 years, Heidi Leeds, enjoy exploring Granite Canyon, Teton Pass, and Trail Creek together.

But it isn’t just about ing outside and selling for Leeds. For him, the important thing is giving

He is on the Friends of Pathways board, and he also focuses on community partnership opportunities for Skinny Skis, including working with the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club to make sure kids who want to participate in Nordic racing can enjoy their chosen sport.

“It’s making it easier for kids who are growing up in the community to do an activity they feel so strongly about,” Leeds says. “We don’t want to see any obstacles for kids who are genuinely interested in a sport.”

The shop also works with the Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance and Grand Teton National Park Foundation’s youth trail crew, in addition to supporting Avalanche Awareness Night with Teton County Search and Rescue and the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center.

CLUTCHING A TEDDY BEAR, MARY FLAMINO QUICKLY GOT TO WORK. THE YOUTH SERVICES MANAGER AT THE TETON COUNTY LIBRARY POSED THE TEDDY BEAR AND A CADRE OF OTHER STUFFED ANIMALS SO IT LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE “RAIDING” THE STAFF REFRIGERATOR AS HER COLLEAGUE SNAPPED A FEW PHOTOS. NEXT, SHE GATHERED ALL THE STUFFED ANIMALS TOGETHER AND PRETENDED TO READ THEM A STORY FOR ANOTHER QUICK PHOTO SESSION. She was doing this as part of the library’s stuffed animal sleepover, where kids leave their plush friends at the library overnight. By the time they pick them up in the morning, the animals have had all sorts of adventures—with photographic evidence to boot.

This type of creativity is something Flamino uses daily in her work as she coordinates after-school programming for kids.

It’s not all reading, though. Kids can work on crafts, origami, puppets, Legos, Tinker Toys, snap circuits, and even have fun with glitter tattoos. Some days are science and engineering days while others are for movies.

“I love working with kids and hearing what they have to say,” she says. “We’re a safe space for kids to come.”

Flamino has worked at the library for four years, officially becoming youth services manager in August after several years as youth services librarian. Before becoming a librarian, she worked at an actuarial consulting firm, but she opted to leave that field in order to embrace her love of libraries.

“You work 40 hours a week, and you should love the place you’re in,” she says. “I love the physical space of libraries and the freedom of information.”

Flamino earned her graduate degree in library science through an online program offered by San Jose State University in California. She completed her degree while she was living in Jackson, and she used the Teton County Library as her model for school exercises, studying the library, its user population, and the local community.

She uses her knowledge of the community and its kids to help select the best books and media to add to the library’s collection. While she reads industry publications to stay on top of new happenings in children’s literature, her favorite way to learn about kids’ books is simply by reading them. She averages 15-20 juvenile fiction books each year.

“I spend most of my free time reading kids’ books,” she says. “I spend more time reading kids’ books than adult books. I’ve always loved a good story.”

Her love of reading and enthusiasm for kids makes her feel like she’s in just the right place, and every day at the library is an adventure.

“I feel like I’m in the right role for who I am,” she says. n

WHEN RECOUNTING SOME OF HIS MOST MEMORABLE ART STUDENTS, RETIRED JACKSON HOLE HIGH SCHOOL ART TEACHER GREG HOUDA SMILED AND TEARED UP A LITTLE AS HE BRAGGED ABOUT SOME OF HIS FORMER STUDENTS. One has a local tattoo studio with a year-long waiting list.

Another former student just moved to the West Coast after holding several successful art shows in Jackson. Houda even proudly bragged about the third grader he once taught who had so much energy and looseness in his art, which may have just looked like scribbles to the untrained eye.

“It just makes you cry, you’re so proud of how hard they work and how accomplished they are,” he says.

Houda never intended to become a teacher. He went to college for fine art in South Dakota and traveled around the West looking for work. When he found himself in Jackson in 1979, he took a job as a log home builder.

One day, the local art teacher at the time, who worked with Houda in construction during the summers, mentioned to him that he would make a great art teacher.

“And I still to this day don’t know why he said that,” Houda says.

After some work accidents forced him out of the building business, Houda began substitute teaching for all grades and subjects throughout Teton County.

“I did this for a few years, so I got to follow these kids as they grew up,” he says. “I got to see the same kids, spend time with the same kids, and really get to know them.”

Eventually, he had the opportunity to teach art full-time at

Jackson Hole High School, where he spent the remainder of his career. Houda loved teaching so much that for many years he would teach after-school art programs for elementary students in addition to his high school duties. He was also artist-in-residence for special art and literature retreats, and he spent time teaching workshops during the summers.

Mostly, he cared about connecting with students, whether they bonded over art or life in general. If a student didn’t have time in his or her schedule for an art class, Houda would fit the student into his planning period.

“I spent time one-on-one with students,” he says. “It didn’t even need to be about art. It could be about life, it could be about whatever. That is a big part about the teaching thing.

It isn’t just about getting your decimals in the right place, it’s just life, trying to share and sort things out.”

In the spring of 2016, Houda officially retired from teaching at Jackson Hole High School. While he has big plans to clean out his art studio, work on his vintage Harleys, focus on his own art, and hang out with his wife of 44 years, Judy, you can see in his face that he will never stop teaching.

FIRST Avalanche Institute Saves Lives

TWENTY-TWO YEARS AGO, PLASTIC BOOTS WERE JUST MAKING THEIR MARK ON BACKCOUNTRY SKIING. BACK THEN, PEOPLE USED THE INCREASING VOLUME OF A BEEP TO PINPOINT A BURIED AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVER, AND TO HEAR THE AVALANCHE FORECAST FOR THE AREA, SKIERS HAD TO CALL A HOTLINE—MOST LIKELY FROM A LANDLINE. While a lot has changed since those days, what hasn’t changed since the winter of 1994-1995 is the total number of people killed in avalanches each year. That number has stayed steady, despite the exponential growth in winter backcountry use.

If it had held steady, he noted, we would be seeing roughly 200 people dying in slides each winter, but we’re not. Something is working, and a big part of that something— beyond improved forecasting and gear—is avalanche education.

In a June 27, 2016 blog post on the National Avalanche Center website, director Karl Birkeland wrote that the avalanche fatality rate has actually dropped by a factor of eight or more in the last 22 years.

Back in 1994, the American Avalanche Institute (AAI) was just beginning its third decade. Started by Rod Newcomb in Jackson, AAI was one of the first avalanche education programs in the United States

and the only one to include time spent outside as part of the curriculum.

Newcomb thought it was essential that students look at and feel the snow, getting down in it and digging around to get a sense of what was happening below the surface in order to understand stability. That conviction became a cornerstone of AAI’s avalanche training and has influenced the field of avalanche education across the country. >> JHStyleMagazine.com |

It’s the philosophy that continues to underpin AAI courses and drive its current owners, Sarah and Don Carpenter and Don Sharaf, who emphasize that training is essential to reducing risk in the backcountry.

But he could see the backcountry from the lifts and, gradually, its allure pushed him to take an AAI Level I Avalanche Course so he’d feel comfortable venturing out of bounds where he could access untracked powder.

“When I moved to Jackson I didn’t know anything about avalanches,” Don Carpenter says. “I pretty much skied at the resort that first winter. I was so green I didn’t even get out into the backcountry.”

Sarah Carpenter also started her ski career inside resort boundaries, but she joined the ski patrol at Bridger Bowl and the Yellowstone Club in Montana after college and began learning about avalanches from more

experienced patrollers. She asked questions, dug pits, studied slopes, worked with explosives, and soaked up information.

The Carpenters later met while working for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), where they both spent a number of years instructing before moving into big mountain guiding on Denali, Rainier, Kilimanjaro, and other high peaks around the world, as well as teaching avalanche courses and ski guiding.

Sharaf cut his winter teeth telemark skiing through the tight trees of New Hampshire and Maine where he worked for the Appalachian Mountain Club for three years. In 1990, he came west to take a winter NOLS course and was hooked.

He soon left the East Coast and started instructing for NOLS, leading mountaineering, winter, and backpacking courses before becoming the head of the school’s winter program in the mid-1990s. In 2001, he went to Alaska to work as a guide and avalanche forecaster for Valdez Heli-Ski Guides, a job he still returns to each spring.

All three AAI owners followed career paths that allowed them to pursue their passion for skiing and the mountains. That shared passion, and a respect for each others’ skills and knowledge, also helped forge their friendships.

With these interests and values in common, the trio bought AAI in 2009 after Newcomb decided to retire. It seemed like a logical next step for all of them.

The owners are now expanding their use of the Internet to help educate backcountry users outside of a formal course.

They post videos showing snow stability tests, tips for digging pits, and ideas to improve decision-making.

In addition, AAI has been instrumental in providing avalanche instruction for Jackson Hole youth, and the organization offers professional-level training for patrollers and guides.

“AAI is the largest independent avalanche course provider in the United States,” Sarah Carpenter says. “We run 65 to 70 courses a year and have roughly 45 employees. Our instructors are professionals who come with lots of experience as forecasters, patrollers, and teachers. AAI is a school. That sets us apart from other avalanche education providers. We don’t guide. We teach people about avalanches” And, as Karl Birkeland says, teaching people about avalanches is saving lives. n

A ZAMBONI IS MUCH LIKE A TRUCK, EXCEPT IT HAS AN 84-INCH BLADE THAT SCRAPES THE ICE. THE MACHINE MUST MOVE AT A STEADY PACE, AND THE DRIVER MUST MAINTAIN THE PERFECT PATTERN EVEN AS THE ZAMBONI SLIDES INTO TURNS. “It might be like a truck, but you are still driving it on pure ice,” says Brian Hannafin, who drives the Zamboni at the Snow King Sports & Events Center as part of his job as operations manager. He is also a hockey player and one of the team captains for the Jackson Hole Moose.

Hannafin drove a Zamboni for the first time when he was just 22 years old and brand new to Jackson. A longtime hockey player, he understood the importance of the Zamboni driver providing smooth ice for the skaters.

“I didn’t want to be the guy who wrecked the ice,” he says.

It takes about 12 minutes for a driver to complete the precise patterns required to clear the rink of grooves and cuts left behind by skaters. The higher skill level of the skaters, the more hacked up the ice becomes, according to Hannafin.

The machine sprays a sheet of water behind it that freezes and creates a pristine new layer of ice. It’s something Hannafin, after a lifelong obsession with hockey, still appreciates.

Hannafin learned to play hockey when he was just four years old. Growing up in Massachusetts, the sport was a family tradition, and Hannafin’s grandfather was his first coach.

He was hooked from the moment he first got on the ice, going on to play for his high school team and then, in college, at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island. After college, Hannafin played in the Eastern Professional Hockey League for a time, and he also had a tryout for a team in what is now called the Southern Professional Hockey League.

to Jackson in the fall of 2002 to both play for the Moose and work at the ice rink. He became rink operations manager in 2014.

At that time, most of the Moose players were skiers who also played hockey.

Games drew about 500 fans then. Today, with a full recruitment and marketing team, Hannafin and his teammates are serious hockey players and games draw up to 1,500 eager fans.

But even after all these years, he still drives the Zamboni—his teammates are counting on him. n

Started last year by the Teton County Search and Rescue Foundation (TCSARF), Backcountry Zero is an initiative that aims to reduce fatalities in the Tetons year-round. As it heads into its second winter, the foundation's executive director, Stephanie Thomas, hopes to continue the conversation.

Steps like these help Thomas and her team of volunteers reach the right groups with the right messaging, whether it’s people enjoying backcountry skiing, floating down the Snake River, or mountain biking on Teton Pass. The goal is to impact all backcountry recreationists in the Tetons.

“We are analyzing all of our data so we can say what type of people are leaving the resort gates, whether or not they are prepared, and if they have the right skill-set,” Thomas says.

The first cross-sport, year-round, community-based program of its kind in the country, Backcountry Zero is mirrored after Sweden’s successful Vision Zero program aimed at road fatalities.

During a TCSARF strategic planning session in 2012, the board realized there was a need to address Jackson’s deep-rooted love of backcountry exploits and the reality of the potentially dangerous elements involved. Members of the community and key players in each realm of recreation would need to come together to educate and empower the general public. Backcountry Zero soon came to life.

Fast forward to 2016, and Thomas and her team’s program is well underway with

classes, campaigns, and ambassador programs geared toward all facets of recreation in the Tetons.

Thomas first became a volunteer with Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) in 2007. She was launched into her current role as executive director of TCSAR’s fundraising arm, TCSARF, in 2010 when the need for a new building called for fundraising.

She now works to educate locals and visitors in hopes of stopping people from getting into situations where they may need assistance from search and rescue. But, when rescues do occur, she helps ensure her volunteers are trained, educated, and as efficient as possible.

“We play a role in education, but it isn’t just about us educating people,” Thomas says. “It is about bringing together different people from different sectors of the community and getting them on the same page.”

Backcountry Zero gives the foundation the ability to take this message further.

“The more people who know about the initiative, the more we can draw others in,” she says. “They can come to us with thoughts and ideas about what might work with their peer groups and how we can reach more of the community.”

Thomas stresses, however, that the goal isn’t to present a top-down method where volunteers tell everyone what they shouldn’t be doing. Instead, TSCARF wants everyone who enjoys the outdoors to remember the “Three P’s”: Prepared, Practiced, and Present.

“Someone said, ‘Lets hop off the highway and learn how to snowboard or something’,” Boyd recalls.

So the group headed to a small ski area nearby. The lights were on but the lifts were closed, so the kids rented snowboards and hiked up the deep, powdery hill.

“I just remember hiking up, bootpacking under the lights, snow coming down, carrying the board and it was so exciting,” Boyd recalls. “The first turns were total powder turns. So that was the first time I ever snowboarded and I think that was pretty influential on me.”

That excursion was just the first of many snowboard adventures to come for Boyd.

Last June, Boyd, a Jones Snowboards team rider, embarked on her most epic adventure yet. In March of 2016, she found out she was awarded a $3,000 Jones Snowboards Adventure Grant to tackle the highest turns in Wyoming on Gannett Peak. This new grant program encourages riders to tap into their backyard and explore local terrain.

“I was talking to a photographer about Gannett and the Wind River Range on a road trip back from Utah in January of 2016,” she says. “It has always been this looming and mysterious range. We said, ‘Let's make this happen,’ and shortly after that conversation, I got an email about the grant.”

On June 2, Boyd, along with action sports photographer Chris Figenshau, videographer Aharon Bram, fellow Jones Snowboards team rider Jimmy Goodman, and local split-board guide Brendan Burns, headed out on the adventure. >>

Rather than walking the 23 miles from Pinedale, Wyoming, to the mountain’s western access point, they chose to go through Crowheart on the Wind River Indian Reservation where they paid a landowner for permission to cross their land and snag a ride through the reservation to Cold Springs Trailhead.

“They dropped us off at the snow line, which was all water at that point,” Boyd says. “We were dropped off in a pond.”

That was the beginning of a long, wet trek for the team. The snow was melting quickly and runoff was all around them.

When they got to Dinwoody Pass, they were finally able to put on skis and begin touring. But it didn’t last long. As soon as they got over Dinwoody Pass, each step they took punched a hole through the snow into knee-deep, rushing water.

They planned a single day for the 13-mile walk, but that turned into two days of grueling, wet hiking with 65-pound packs. On day three, it all felt worth it.

“Day three was the day we went for Gannett,” Boyd says. “It was just a gorgeous walk. The sunrise was lighting up that whole valley. And then, once you actually get back in there, it’s the most incredible terrain.”

And the weather couldn’t have been better.

“After six months of planning and rescheduling and looking for the perfect weather window, we had beautiful clear skies, not a single cloud, zero wind, and could look across the state and see the Grand Teton dwarfed by our proximity,” Boyd says. “That's just unheard of in the Winds… We all felt incredibly lucky and grateful after all the effort we put in to get to that moment.”

On the fourth day of the trip, and the second day of snowboarding, the team attempted a couloir on Mount Warner, but the snow was too firm so they headed to another nearby peak, Le Trois Dames.

“I was the first one to drop, and it was still very firm, so it was really gnarly,” she recalls. “I was hauling on firm snow. It was the first time that I had snowboarded over a bergschrund (glacier crevasse).

That was cool, getting air over an abyss.”

Following a couple of days of snowboarding stoke, the exhausted team headed back through the grueling terrain to their pick-up point. Would she do it again?

“Absolutely,” she says. n

“It’s Class A avalanche terrain,” Miller says. “When it slides, it slides big.”

Traveling with experienced guides can help mitigate these dangers since even seasoned backcountry skiers may not be familiar with every terrain trap or danger.

“We know the history, we know the terrain,” Miller says.

“You can be the best backcountry skier in the world and fall in a trap because you don’t know the terrain.”

Having guides with such extensive experience makes exploring the backcountry safer and even more enjoyable.

People also appreciate the fact a backcountry adventure is very different from a typical resort ski day.

“I like that it’s quiet out there,” Franco says. “You leave the resort and it’s a whole different place. On a busy day, even when you see some people out there, it’s quiet, it’s peaceful.”

Some people also underestimate the danger factor because JHMR’s backcountry is so easily accessible.

And, for many skiers and snowboarders, the uniqueness of the backcountry experience makes it even more special and helps build lifelong memories.

“I think people tend to downplay the backcountry by calling it sidecountry, and I think that maybe folks who don’t

“WHERE ELSE CAN YOU GET ON A CROSS-COUNTRY SKI TRACK AND SKI 17 MILES UNDER INCREDIBLE MOUNTAIN PEAKS?” – Gwenn Wadsworth

The Wadsworths are lifelong coaches and athletes.

Both taught physical education in San Diego, California, and Jackson while Gwenn also coached volleyball and Don coached football. They’ve been ski instructors with Jackson Hole Mountain Resort for 36 years.

Today, they work to support the local Nordic community, and every Saturday and Sunday, they can be found at the cross-country trails near the Stilson Ranch parking area. There, they work with skiers of all levels to give customized tips based on each skier’s needs through free drop-in sessions and classes organized by the Rec Center.

The Wadsworths believe the Teton-area landscape offers an incredible playground for Nordic athletes.

“Where else can you get on a cross-country ski track and ski 17 miles under incredible mountain peaks?”

Gwenn says. “This is really just an awesome place to cross-country ski. That’s the draw.”

Jackson’s Nordic community has always been strong, but access has not always been as prevalent. However, in recent years, a strong community partnership has put Nordic skiing on the fast track.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort recruited the Wadsworths to act as Nordic ambassadors and partnered with Teton County and Jackson Parks and Recreation which provides the necessary trail grooming.

In addition to the ski tips clinics, the Wadsworths also teach a Nordic workshop for Spanish speakers.

“We only speak a little Spanish, but we got really lucky,” Gwenn says. On the first day of one workshop, a wellknown Spanish-speaking Nordic coach happened to join them, and at other times, they’ve had the help of some of Jackson’s Spanish immersion students.

“We had one student who translated the entire lesson all day,” Gwenn says. “We couldn’t have done it without him.”

The Wadsworths attribute many of the fantastic local cross-country skiing opportunities to the work of the Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance, a community organization that supports the sport.

“Thanks to their work, there will be more grooming and more awesome places to ski,” Gwenn says.

Head “yurtmeister” Brian Hady has led over 50 overnight trips to the dome in the past five years. As a backcountry tour guide, he skis with clients from the bottom of the Hoback runs at the resort to the yurt, takes care of all yurt maintenance, keeps the fire stoked, cooks meals, and melts snow for water.

“My favorite moment is often when people realize that their drinking water is coming from the snow that covers the mountains around them and it just needs to be melted over a hot woodstove,” he says.

According to Hady, it's hard to beat riding the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram to the 10,450foot summit of Rendezvous Mountain and skiing down to the yurt with clients for his job. He especially enjoys helping people relax and bond with each other.

Maloney was the first person in the state to attain the Les Clefs d’Or honor, and is one of only two Wyomingites to earn the distinction. She completed a 15-hour test, gathered letters of recommendation, found current members to sponsor her, and even fielded a “secret shopper” call to earn her keys.

But when she first came to Jackson in 1998, she didn’t have visions of golden lapel keys in mind. She simply wanted a break from her busy New York City life and came to the Tetons on vacation. The following year, she wanted a longer break from the city’s hectic pace so she took a job at Lost Creek Ranch.

She spent her summers working at the ranch and winters at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s Kids’ Ranch, in addition to a rotation of other jobs including nanny, personal assistant, barista, and florist.

But when the Four Seasons opened in 2003, she found her future career. Starting as a lounge server, she soon transferred to the concierge desk and became head concierge in 2006.

“One of the things I love about being a concierge is all of the problem solving that we have to do,” she says. “We help guests when they are in a bind, and it's nice to be able to think creatively and figure out ways to solve guests’ various problems. Oftentimes, there is a time constraint involved so it really puts your problem-solving skills to the test.”

While Maloney and seven other concierges routinely handle day-to-day requests such as making dining reservations, booking local activities and spa treatments, ordering flowers, and the like, sometimes guests are looking for something a bit less conventional.

She recalls one guest who wanted an ice sculpture of his wife’s name. Not finding any local ice-carving artists ready to take on the task, the concierge team tracked down a Colorado ice artist who created the sculpture and drove it all the way to Jackson on a white-knuckle drive.

“We can make most things happen,” Maloney says.

Another guest wanted an engagement to remember, so he worked with the hotel to ship clothes and shoes from a personal shopper and have a new wardrobe ready for his girlfriend upon arrival. He also shipped some relationship mementos and took her on a romantic boat ride to pop the question—she said “yes.”

“She didn’t even know she was coming to Jackson,” Maloney recalls. “It’s fun to be able to do unexpected things.”

When she’s not at work, Maloney revels in Jackson pastimes like cross-country skiing and hiking, as well as spending time outdoors with her partner, Mike, and their 6-year-old son, Michael. Her delight in Jackson living translates to her work.

“Jackson Hole is the best, and being able to share it with people is what makes the job,” she says. n

Lawrence, who is originally from Tennessee, studied interior design at the University of Tennessee. In college she taught herself to sew, inspired by her grandmother who was always gifting handcrafted bedding or curtains to family members.

She moved to Jackson with her family in 2001, and in 2010, Lawrence began to create custom-sewn fabrications under the name Yelsew Studio. She found that new upholstery can make a piece of furniture one-ofa-kind or brand new again. “I think a very beautiful box cushion is one of the hardest to make, but it’s so rewarding,” she says.

Lawrence is fastidious in her work. She likes things done precisely, which is one reason she never wanted to create a large upholstery store where she wasn’t the one working on the pieces.

About three years ago, she combined the upholstery business with her skill in interior design and her eye for unique pieces.

The resulting Matterhouse is a store offering mid-century modern and collectible furnishings.

The store has a contemporary, yet comfortable, feel with a soft purple upholstered wall and furniture that begs to be sat upon. Among the large furniture pieces, there are also smaller accessories.

A wall of pillows in a rainbow of colors allows people to pick a pop of brightness to add to their beds or couches.

The store features collectable pieces like a George Nelson credenza, a Hans Wagner daybed, and a Norwegian wall unit and desk. The style ranges from mid-century modern to antiques. “I just get what I like,” Lawrence says. But she also picks pieces specifically with Jackson homes in mind.

Because of the sense of style in Jackson, she limits the space-agey modern pieces, and opts for offerings with more wood.

of-a-kind, but they are hard to find. Plus, Lawrence customizes items with fabric, upholstering couches, chairs, and daybeds.

She creates full rooms in the storefront, and some people come in and purchase the whole set, taking home all the pieces to recreate it in their own home. Some buy a single piece. Others hire Lawrence as a designer.

As a designer, she helps people work with what they have, usually acting as a second eye instead of coming in to totally redecorate. She first tries to rearrange rooms or add accent pieces.

“If you have good bones, sometimes you just need to throw in some new accessories,” she says. “Sometimes all you need is a coat of paint or some new upholstery.” n

In 2000, Etchemendy moved to the area with her husband, who was helping build the Teton Springs Resort golf course in Victor, Idaho. She soon earned her real estate license, transitioning to the field after spending years working in human resources. In contrast, Anderson’s background is in corporate finance and operations.

They both moved to Teton Valley and found work selling home sites at Teton Springs Resort in the early 2000s. They rose to the top of their class in sales and saw the opportunity to expand. All Season Resort Realty was born under the umbrella of Teton Springs Resort, and that’s where the main office is still located today. They have since expanded to employ three fulltime agents: Jennifer Blair, Chris Miller, and Patty Crawford.

Etchemendy is an avid golfer and a self-described “summer girl” who delights in riding her bike to the Teton Springs pool.

By contrast, Anderson longs for winter by the time August rolls around, and spends her time backcountry skiing and riding her snowmobile. She also loves to escape for mini-vacations now and then. Whatever she does, she always loves to get outside.

“Being outdoors is what touches my soul,” she says.

Etchemendy and Anderson certainly agree that the beauty of their surroundings helps keep them rooted in the Teton Valley community and makes the real estate business personal.

“We strive to build great relationships because, at the end of the day, our customers not only become our neighbors, they become good friends,” Etchemendy says. n

ONE OF THE PLACES YOU MAY HAVE RECENTLY SEEN JULIA HEEMSTRA IS IN A PREVIEW FOR A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT WOMEN CLIMBING IN THE WIND RIVER RANGE. THE MINUTE-LONG CLIP SHOWS HEEMSTRA INCHING UP A CRACK ON A STEEP PITCH OF GRANITE HIGH IN THE CIRQUE OF THE TOWERS, A WORLD-CLASS CLIMBING DESTINATION IN THE HEART OF THE RANGE. Equal Footing premiered at the Telluride Mountainfilm Festival in 2016 and is making the rounds as part of the Mountainfilm World Tour.

The video offers a glimpse into the adventurous side of Heemstra’s double life. In addition to her mountain feats, she is also director of St. John’s Medical Center’s Wellness Department. On a daily basis, she works with hospital employees to help them make small, sustainable changes toward healthier living, whether that means passing up a cookie at lunch or going for a walk during a work break.

“They are the ones I think about every day because they’re the ones making changes and encouraging one another,” Heemstra says.

Originally from South Africa, Heemstra got her start in social work. She signed up to be a community support worker in a shanty town, where she provided instruction on home gardening techniques for food crops and conducted medical and social advocacy work.

She moved to Jackson Hole 12 years ago, working as a Curran-Seeley staff member before taking the position at St. John’s.

When she’s not working, she is often out on a mountain adventure. One recent extreme outing took place in the summer of 2015. Early on a July morning, while most people in the valley were soundly sleeping in their beds, Heemstra was pouring herself a cup of coffee and wrapping up a brief meditation session. At 4:24 a.m., she climbed on her bike and began pedaling toward Grand Teton National Park.

She was attempting her first solo “Picnic,” as the expedition is known locally. Started by mountaineer David Gonzales,

the “Picnic” is a sort of big-mountain triathlon. It involves biking to Grand Teton National Park, swimming across Jenny Lake, and free-soloing—climbing alone and without ropes—up all 13,775 feet of the Grand Teton. Once up top, it’s time to do the whole thing again in reverse.

Heemstra was the first woman to complete the entire “Picnic” solo and unsupported, meaning no one was bringing her supplies along the way.

“Really the most memorable moment for me was when I could finally see the bottom of Jenny Lake again on the second swim,” she says. That meant she was nearing the final leg, and that’s when it finally sank in that she was actually going to accomplish what she set out to do.

But as she cruised into Town Square on her bike, 14 hours and 47 minutes after she set out, Heemstra realized she could go further. That’s when she decided to attempt the “Moranic Picnic,” which is a similar triathlon that involves swimming across Leigh Lake and climbing Mount Moran.

As Heemstra put it, the adventure is “longer and way more remote” than the original route.

She was able to accomplish her goal, finishing in 16 hours and 13 minutes. She’s the first woman to have completed either triathlon solo and unsupported.

For Heemstra, the herculean efforts of that summer were about re-establishing, for herself, exactly what she was capable of in the face of change in her personal life.

“I wanted to remind myself of the level of strength I had,” she says. And that’s a strength she brings with her, whether in the mountains or at work helping people live healthier lives at St. John’s. n JHStyleMagazine.com |

One resident lived near what is now called Slide Lake in 1925 when the infamous Gros Ventre landslide occurred, bringing 50 million cubic yards of debris crashing down, blocking the Gros Ventre River and creating the lake.

Vinson grew up in Michigan. Her mom, Joan Hosterman, worked as a nurse, and Vinson always thought it might be a profession she’d like to pursue.

When the factory closed, it offered training for year-long programs, and Vinson went to nursing school and became a licensed practical nurse (LPN).

That was 25 years ago.

“It was something I always wanted to do,” Vinson says. “It just took me a while to get pushed in that direction.”

About seven years ago, with their children grown, Vinson and her husband, Mike, moved to Jackson after he got a job as a certified public accountant in town.

Three years ago, Ella took a job as a staff nurse at MorningStar since she’d always loved working with the senior population. She liked MorningStar, in particular, because of its sense of community.

“And everybody is a family,” she says.

“Everyone looks out for each other, and that’s one of the best things about being here.”

Vinson served a brief stint as MorningStar’s resident care coordinator, a position she left in August to work as an LPN on an as-needed basis. She moved to the part-time position to allow more time for her to focus on completing her registered nursing degree online. It’s something she has always wanted to do.

While her studies take priority for the next nine months, she couldn’t quite give up MorningStar and its residents, so she still works there part-time.

The shop has two owners: Jennifer Nelson-Hawks and Babette Melka. Nelson-Hawks went to school to be a certified medical assistant, while Melka obtained a pharmacy degree. The two became connected five years ago when Nelson-Hawks would call in prescriptions for a doctor in town and the two would get to talking.

“We are nothing alike,” Melka says. “But when it comes to running a business together, we don’t even have to speak to each other; we just know what to do.”

The two offer holistic health options including hormone consultations and preventative measures for health and wellness.

“We individualize for our clients,” Nelson-Hawks explains. “We support them as individuals instead of giving everyone exactly the same thing.”

Wandering through Simply Health’s aisles, visitors will see “living fuel” super meals, brain formulas, flower essences, massage oil blends, detox formulas, and a number of other herbal and pharmaceutical-grade supplements.

“We’re constantly keeping up with new research,” Melka says. She described an incident where a client finished radiation for cancer and wanted to nurse her body back to health but had insomnia and a generally truncated state of mind. She tried the aqua detox foot bath and said she had never slept so well or felt so optimistic.

It is this type of individualized care and unconventional therapy that inspires the two to continue delving into new research and methodology.

Nelson-Hawks notes many people come in after they can’t find what they need from their doctors. The shop helps them find alternative treatments and ongoing education to heal their minds and bodies.

The women aren’t saying they’re miracle

For these two Jackson women carving their own path to healing, there is never an endpoint in their journey.

“We’re always evolving,” Nelson-Hawks says. “We will grow indefinitely.” n

With her small frame and collection of burns from quiche trays, pastry chef Li Corn’s battle wounds from the kitchen are a mosaic of her diverse experiences in baking. Corn started working in traditional New York Italian bakeries when she was just 16.

“The second I walked into the bakery and felt the flour under my feet, I knew that is where I wanted to be,” she recalls.

Corn believes Picnic is unique because everyone there is passionate about what they are doing, working to make classic American pastries and dishes even better.

A graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in New York, Corn holds a bachelor’s degree of professional studies in baking and pastry arts management.

She has worked in food and beverage management for Four Seasons hotel properties in Jackson, Houston, Whistler, Los Angeles, and the Caribbean, and is currently writing a cookbook.

“I am a complete foodie,” she says, “I knew from a young age that I wanted to have a career in food.

Pastry is a science and an art put together.”

Corn works in production and management at both Picnic and its partner restaurant, Persephone, which allows for maximum creativity. She manages special orders, writes her own recipes, creates new products and designs, develops menus, and trains and manages pastry cooks.

“I have the freedom to be creative doing what I love,” Corn says. “I literally dream of recipes that I can implement and turn into reality at my job.”

Picnic provides Corn with the opportunity to explore innovative ideas that don’t fit into Persephone’s French-inspired identity.

Recently, O’Connor has taken over the Million Dollar Cowboy Steakhouse that resides below the iconic bar. The restaurant has gone through many owners, and has featured several different genres of food, ranging from Mexican cuisine to burgers.

Now, O’Connor is changing the menu and the atmosphere again, creating what he calls a “speakeasy steak house with a modern twist.”

O’Connor grew up outside of Albany, New York, and attended the Culinary Institute of America near New York City. After graduating, he headed west to work in Park City, Utah, and then opened an Italian restaurant with his cousin called Stoneground Kitchen. After a year and a half, he was ready for a new adventure.

“I came up here for a vacation for a couple days and then really fell in love with the place,” O’Connor says.

The chef put in his time at Jackson restaurants, working for Calico, Old Yellowstone Garage, Il Villaggio Osteria, Bin22, and Q Roadhouse. After more than 10 years moving up in the local culinary scene, he took some time to decompress and travel for eight months, working short stints at restaurants in Connecticut, San Francisco, and Seattle along the way.

When he returned to Jackson, he started Old Yellowstone Garage Catering, opened a restaurant of the same name in Alpine, Wyoming, and recently took over ownership of the historic Million Dollar Cowboy Steakhouse in downtown Jackson.

“I am trying to re-brand everything as a speakeasy steak house because we are underground,” he says. “We just renamed the bar area ‘The Den.’”

O’Connor describes the menu as classic steak house with a modern twist, but he’s modest about the creativity in his food.

The restaurant offers large cuts of prime meats and wild game with innovative sauces, appetizers, sides, and salads. It features poppers made with duck, citrus cream cheese, bacon, and tamarind barbeque sauce. There is also a take on the classic iceberg salad, made with pickled egg, shishito peppers, and deep-fried braised pork belly cut up like croutons.

was visiting the region on a road trip from Northern California when the Jackson Dam broke and flooded the area, stranding him.

He embraced this happy accident wholeheartedly and secured a job washing dishes at the old Silver Spur Restaurant.

His entrepreneurial spirit and restaurant industry experience led him to launch Jede-

diah’s Restaurant with his original coworkers from the Silver Spur in 1980. The successful restaurant was eventually offered the contract for Jackson Hole Airport, and Mike shut down the original restaurant in town to focus on his new airport location.

He’s served as town councilman, county commissioner, and member of the Chamber of Commerce board. In 2016, he ran for the State House of Representatives and served as a super delegate for presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

He and his wife, Paty, even brought their entire family to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia in July 2016, seeing the event as a chance to expose their teenagers to the workings of the political system.

Gierau stumbled into politics by yet another happy accident, though this time no dams failed. After disagreeing with a decision from town officials regarding a liquor license, he began to attend town meetings, and he soon became involved in politics to help create change in his beloved community.

Having children also greatly influenced his desire to stay politically active. His self-described “whole new appreciation for our school system here in Teton County” brought issues of education to the forefront of his platform.

Besides the stellar local school system, Gierau cites snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, boating, and biking as some of the greatest perks of raising a family in Jackson.

“I take full advantage of the recreational opportunities that Grand Teton National Park affords me,” he says. “When I’m not running my business or running for political office, you can find me in one place: on my boat on Jackson Lake.” n

A VALLEY TRADITION The Hootenanny Delights

ON MONDAY NIGHTS IN THE TINY TOWN OF MOOSE, WYOMING, COWBOYS SHED THEIR SPURS TO SING A TUNE. AS THE SETTING SUN CASTS GOLDEN LIGHT OVER SNOWCAPPED PEAKS AND JACK FROST NIPS THE AIR, MUSICIANS OF ALL AGES GATHER AT DORNAN’S BAR AND GRILL, JUST OUTSIDE GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, TO PLAY A SONG OR TWO AT THE HOOTENANNY, A JACKSON HOLE TRADITION STEEPED IN LEGEND AND LAUGHTER.

Stragglers wander in and out of the bar, but the ambiance is respectfully hushed, and audience members sit quietly, tapping their feet and nodding along to traditional Western, country, and folk music. This open mic night evokes the good ol’ days gone by, a slice of apple pie Americana.

ing around a campfire surrounded by rustling sage and gently falling snow. Tomingas recounts being hired by Barker back in the day, rowing boats for the fledgling Barker– Ewing raft company, and he jokes, “I may have gotten hired because of my guitar playing and not my skills as an oarsman.”

This night, a cowgirl crooner takes the stage donning a Stetson hat, her boots peeking out from underneath a prairie skirt that she twirls with a flourish before telling the story of her song, as if spinning yarns beside a campfire. Then, she picks her full-bellied guitar and belts out a soulful tune proclaiming, “If music be the food of love, swing on!”

Tomingas recalls the Teton Tea Parties of local folklore, and his eyes light up as he says, “We got pretty good at what we were doing.” As he begins to play, it is easy to see how the Hootenanny tradition has helped him hone his craft into the phenomenal, mesmerizing guitar performance that lucky listeners are privy to today.

The town of Jackson didn’t always have a place to swing, sing, and strum, and as Hootenanny founder and emcee Bill Briggs explains, “We didn’t have music, real acoustic music.”

As the night swings on, the Hootenanny stage sees banjo players, singing duos, modern folk music, old country Western ballads, heartfelt originals, and anecdotes aplenty.

For the final act, several performers who have already graced the stage join together and form a band consisting of a banjo, mandolin, two guitars, and a stand-up bass.

Briggs is considered the father of American extreme skiing, having claimed the first ski descent of the Grand Teton in 1971, and music is his second lifetime love. Back in 1957, he set up camp under the Snake River Bridge in Moose and picked his banjo below a blanket of twinkling stars. Soon his friends joined in the fun, some strumming, humming, or singing along, and each person brought some booze for the communal pot bubbling over the fire.

Briggs dubbed the dubious mixture Teton Tea, and from this moniker sprung the tradition of Teton Tea Parties. Dick Barker, then a local fishing guide, was a regular at these gatherings and always delighted in both the camaraderie and joyful tunes.

Years later, Barker and Briggs convinced Bob Dornan to host a Monday night Hootenanny, a nod to the days of their youth and love of folk music.

The “Hoot” kicked off on February 22, 1993, and has continued with great success on Monday nights ever since. Local legends such as Briggs, Barker, and John Byrne Cooke have brushed elbows there with the likes of international sensations such as Tom Rush, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, and John Denver. Occasionally, the musicians even bring the show to town, performing at the Center for the Arts in Jackson.

The group appears to be a pack of old friends, jamming together in the spirit of the Old West.

The audience sways and claps along, standing for an ovation as the band wraps up its last tune. Many patrons stay for a while, mixing with the musicians as everyone enjoys a cold brew, red wine, or a beverage more reminiscent of Briggs’ original Teton Tea.

On this Monday night in Moose, Briggs calls his old friend Byron Tomingas to the stage, saying Tomingas "really makes a guitar sound right.” Tomingas clambers onstage and sits with his guitar perched on his lap, looking out into the audience and beaming a mischievous smile.

There is a large “Hall of Fame” board posted on the wall showcasing musicians who have played the Hoot over 100 times along with a plaque that reads, “We hope the Hoot will continue at Dornan’s for many years… So long as you, the audience, keeps coming, we’ll be here.” n

LIKE MANY WHO MOVE TO THE VALLEY, PATRICK CHADWICK CAME FOR THE SKIING. BUT HE ENDED UP STAYING FOR A TOTALLY DIFFERENT REASON: MUSIC. Jackson Hole has a bustling band scene, complete with folksy duos and the kind of funk music typically found in ski towns.

Chadwick says. “If you play an open mic in Boston, everyone is talking over you. The attentiveness here you can’t find other places.”

When Chadwick arrived six years ago, he quickly settled into the tuneful landscape, finding fellow singer-songwriters at the weekly Hootenanny at Dornan’s in Moose.

Although Jackson’s darling folk group The Flannel Attractions broke up after numerous gigs and a winter residency at The Mangy Moose Saloon, Chadwick is still nurturing his music in the valley.

He met the musicians who would become members of The Flannel Attractions, his former band, at those gatherings, and he even met a new collaborator: indie and electronically-influenced singer-songwriter Victor Pokorny.

Earlier this year, he released a solo EP called Soul of Mine that reveals his solid songwriting skills and Americana-style guitar-picking.

In the title track, he cleverly speaks of uncertainty in a relationship: “My heart is game/My head is not/I’m sorry I left

on your coffee pot/The stains it left will wash away and darling we’ll be fine/And if you’re still here when I run out of all these words that rhyme, then you just might settle this soul of mine.”

Chadwick got his musical start as a teen growing up outside of Boston. He listened to groups like the Smashing Pumpkins and Dave Matthews Band and wanted to learn to play his favorites on guitar. But, he says, it was a rough start.

“I have tapes of me singing back then, and I sound like a mix of a bizarro Dave Matthews and Bob Dylan,” he says. “It was a long road of progress.”

His first band was a trio called Those 3 Guys, a group he formed with friends from high school.

“I started playing more songs in college and got better,” he says. “My singing got better.”

While in school at Boston College, he started studying music, which ultimately helped him with his songwriting.

Now in Jackson, he collaborates with others in the music community including bands like The Canyon Kids and Shark Week. He was part of the first Out West Fest, a music festival honoring Jackson’s original songwriters with a showcase followed by an encore with all the musicians. The event was such a hit another was held in the summer at Teton Village.

“There are a lot of folks writing quality original music, which is a little surprising,” Chadwick says. “You don’t expect to find that in a mountain town.”

As the valley grows, more urban influences are bleeding into mountain life and music is part of that, he observes. And he’ll take it.

There are few other places to nurture days on the ski hill and nights of new melodies. n

MUSIC AND NIGHTLIFE Wear your dancing shoes if you’re headed to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar or the

Wort Hotel’s Silver Dollar Bar, and get ready to move to live, local music. The Pink Garter Theatre offers a wide assortment of bigname national performers as well as plenty of local acts. Follow up the show with a slice of late night pizza pie at Pinky G’s just below the Pink Garter. Or check out live music at the Town Square Tavern.

Stop by the Stagecoach Bar in Wilson to check out The Stagecoach Band, a local institution that has played there every Sunday night for over 45 years. Head up to the Hootenanny at Dornan’s in Moose, just outside Grand Teton National Park. This regular Monday night event features local and visiting musicians and singer-songwriters, giving the crowd an unforgettable open-mic show.

Be sure to get home safely after a night on the town. Jackson’s START Bus offers a free town shuttle and cabs are available on the Town Square. Just call one of the many local cab companies if you don’t see one waiting. n

THE CROWD OF BREWERS CHEERED AS REPRESENTATIVES FROM TWO JACKSON BREWERIES TOOK THE STAGE TO COLLECT AWARDS AT THE GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL (GABF) HELD IN DENVER, COLORADO, IN OCTOBER. Melvin Brewing earned gold in the “Fresh or Wet Hop Ale” category for its Melvin IPA, while Snake River Brewing brought home a silver for the Kelly Alt—an unfiltered alt beer that locals know as “Old Keller”—in the “Kellerbier or Zwickelbier” category.

“It’s the best feeling in the world for brewers,” says Chris Erickson, director of brewery operations at Snake River Brewing.

“You’re recognized by your peers in the industry, who make up the judging panel, as one of the finest beers in the country.”

Judges evaluated over 7,200 beers and awarded 286 medals at the 2016 awards. Wyoming was the state with the highest ratio of medals to entries, with 45 entries bringing home five medals.

Over the past 22 years, Snake River Brewing has received 34 GABF medals. In 2015, Melvin Brewing earned the Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year award, as well as a bronze for Melvin IPA. This year’s fresh hop winner, Melvin IPA, required a bit of maneuvering to get the ingredients together in time.

“It’s a fresh hop beer, so the hops get picked off the vine in Colorado and do not go through the normal palletization process,” says Melvin Brewing co-founder Jeremy Tofte. “They get to us within 24 hours of being picked.”

“Marco is an extraordinary Chef and Guitarist, wearing more than one hat, but it’s always a cowboy hat.”

To meet the 24-hour deadline, drivers brought the hops from Colorado straight to the brewery, beginning production right at 3 a.m. when they arrived.

“It’s always fun to figure out how to get fresh hops to middle-of-nowhere Wyoming,” Tofte says.

Teamwork and inventiveness help local breweries bring home the medals, but quality is the biggest factor.

“Wyoming has 13 breweries out of 4,600 in the country,” Tofte says. “I guess it’s quality over quantity.” n

EDUCATION COMES FULL CIRCLE Getting Back to Our Roots

ON A BRISK DECEMBER MORNING, TWO DOZEN TETON VALLEY, IDAHO, WOMEN TREKKED THROUGH THE WOODS, SUSTAINABLY HARVESTING BOUGHS, BRANCHES, ROSE HIPS, AND PINE CONES TO CREATE HOLIDAY WREATHS. FULL CIRCLE EDUCATION’S NATURALISTS SHARED TIPS AS THEY WANDERED ALONGSIDE THE FORAGERS.

This wreath-building excursion was just one of many sustainable living workshops that Full Circle Education offers throughout the year to teach and promote a sustainable pattern of living. The group also offers school gardening programs in Teton Valley. The programs all share a common goal: Connecting the community to the natural systems of life with a goal to “live more lightly.”

Full Circle Education is the brainchild of Erika Eschholz, now the owner of Teton Full Circle Farm along with her husband, Ken Michael. The nonprofit began in 2006 as part of Teton Valley Community School and then partnered with Slow Food in the Tetons before becoming its own nonprofit in 2012.

Now under the leadership of program director and educator Emily Sustick, Full Circle Education is picking up steam, working to instill a connection to food and sustainability in both children and adults.

Sustick stays busy teaching gardening at three Teton Valley schools throughout the school year, leading summer camps, and organizing sustainable living workshops.

Full Circle hosts half a dozen classes a year, but as the interest continues to grow, Sustick is excited to offer new topics and more options.

“The biggest thing I notice when I leave the workshops is the sense that people really benefited from the community aspect of the classes and built lasting relationships,” she says.

The programs are seasonally driven, ranging from high-elevation gardening to foraging for wild edible plants. The winter programs mirror traditional skills a homesteader might use to get ready for the frigid season ahead, whether creating candles from beeswax or preserving the fall harvest.

Sustick brings a background in education and a love of farming to a curriculum she teaches and lives. She graduated from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and has been living and gardening on both sides of the Tetons for the past decade. Sustick reconnected with her

gardening roots after working on a local farm for a summer, and she soon found she was hooked.

Her passion is apparent when sharing the possibilities for future Full Circle Education programming or recapping her students’ reactions to nurturing vegetables from seeds.

“I think the work is so important,” Sustick says. "Every time I teach, I have an opportunity to inspire positive change in how people connect with their food and interact with the natural world.”

At her Victor, Idaho, home, Sustick tends to her bees, cares for backyard chickens, and maintains her large garden. She enjoys living the lifestyle she teaches, supporting local farms and buying from sustainable producers.

“Growing my own food brings me a lot of pleasure,” Sustick says. “When you take part in the process you quickly recognize the value of what you are consuming, which is why I also choose to support local farmers and producers.”

Sustick’s passion for the natural world is evident, whether she is tending to her chickens or teaching kids about gardening. Living lightly on the land—Full Circle Education’s goal—is simply second nature to her. n JHStyleMagazine.com |

EVERYONE SAYS THEY’RE JUST GOING TO TAKE ONE YEAR OFF TO BE A SKI BUM. BUT SOME STICK AROUND FOR DECADES AFTER THEY UTTER THOSE WORDS. MARK HANSON IS ONE OF THOSE GUYS. He and his wife, Nell, left Eugene, Oregon, after they got married with thoughts of Jackson Hole in their minds. However,

things didn’t fall into place on the Wyoming side of the Tetons. But when they drove over Teton Pass to Idaho, a house,

jobs, and friends fell right into place in a matter of hours. They settled in and embraced their new community.

That community also helps Hanson in his work as director of Grand Targhee’s Ski and Snowboard School.

“Grand Targhee is the hub of the community in the winter,” Hanson says.

And it’s a fun hub, according to Hanson.

When he first began teaching kids, he found fun to be the key component in a successful lesson. He believes this should translate to adult lessons as well.

“Kids generally learn best when they are having fun,” he says. “Adults can learn from the kids. After all, it is about fun. If it isn’t fun, why bother?”

Grand Targhee's school offers a variety of options, including lessons for kids as young as 18 months. The “Big Cat–Bob Cat” lessons for kids focus on fun and playful learning, and the adult three-day “Knowledge is Powder” camp teaches off-piste skills along with a snow cat option.

“I hear people say they learned to ski when they were younger or years ago,” he says.

“I say, ‘Me too, but I am still learning.’ In fact, the best teachers really are also the best learners.”

For Teton Valley residents, Grand Targhee is an integral component of the community, and Hanson, who raised his two now-grown daughters, Lydia and Tait, on the hill, sees the value in what Targhee continues to offer.

“I enjoy that the original valley folks who dreamed this up have brought economic opportunity but have maintained a genuine, welcoming place,” he says. “It’s a personal experience.”

That kind of love for his hometown mountain is what has made the ski school program so strong. Hanson admits he’s a chronic teacher, and loves when his students from 25 years ago come back with their families ready to pass the torch to their little ones.

“We have a deeper relationship with folks,” he says. “We have a culture, you get to know most folks, and people get the chance to form lifelong friendships.” n

LOCAL YOGA ENTHUSIASTS, ASPIRING YOGA TEACHERS, WOMEN IN INDIA, AND EVEN USSA SKI AND SNOWBOARD TEAMS IN PARK CITY, UTAH, AND MOUNT HOOD, OREGON, HAVE ALL REAPED THE BENEFITS OF ONE LOCAL YOGA MASTER, GLOBAL ACTIVIST, AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES TEACHER: DAYSHA HAMPTON. With more than 10,000 hours of yoga under her belt, Hampton spends her time doing everything from coaching professionals in yoga, meditation, visualization, and practicing mental strength, to traveling to India where she leads yoga and service-based trips throughout the country. Her first trip there was in January 2007, and she continues to make regular journeys back.

“India is an assault on the senses with vibrant colors, tastes, and smells,” she says,

“And yet, the yogic lifestyle represents calm serenity in an ashram setting.”

Her trips to India are filled with surprising encounters, and she recalls one incident where “a gang of monkeys in a hill plantation took my backpack and stole all the shiny objects and food,” she says, laughing.

including the Idaho Teton Yoga Co-op In Victor, Idaho. The co-op offers Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, yoga flow, Yogalates, restorative yoga, 300-hour yoga teacher trainings, and private sessions.

“Daysha teaches yoga in everything she says and does and modifies every class based on individual needs,” student Barb Denisoff says.

In addition to her work in the yoga realm, Hampton is also an adjunct professor for the College of Business at the University of Idaho and she will teach a social entrepreneurship and cultural study abroad course in India through the school this June. She also helps with the school's Central American Youth Ambassador program each year.

“My passion for world cultures is continually strengthened by teaching,” Hampton says.

She also partners with Women’s India Trust, the oldest nonprofit organization for women in Mumbai. She teaches private enterprise courses and helps women sell handmade goods.

This spring, Hampton plans to once again travel to India to assist Apne Aap—an organization responsible for offering livelihood training to 20,000 women in Bihar—in opening a yoga and Ayurveda center.

Locally and regionally, Hampton is equally industrious, putting on a variety of original retreats, including “Women’s Empowerment in the Tetons,” “Moab by Moonlight,” and “Horses and Healing.”

“Leading trips brings all my skills together to offer people a life-changing, expansive experience, introducing them to rich culture, and truly, to themselves,” she says.

When not in the studio or across the ocean, Hampton teaches stand-up paddleboarding yoga on the Teton River, Palisades Lake, and Wakeside Lake.

“Being in nature on the board in the mountains is my favorite place to do yoga,” she says. “The balance takes your single-pointed meditative focus and your ability to the next level.”

Currently, Hampton is applying to Ph.D. programs in international development and researching women’s empowerment in India for a documentary.

“Every aspect of my life has been influenced by yoga,” she says. “It is an incredible holistic life path.” n

BACKCOUNTRY SKIING Travel into the backcountry with a professional on a tour or educational course offered

by Yostmark, Teton Backcountry Guides, or National Outdoor Leadership School. These tours typically visit Teton Pass or Grand Targhee Resort’s sidecountry, and avalanche education courses are also available. Be sure to have proper training, knowledge, skills, and equipment, and check the avalanche forecast before venturing out-of-bounds.
