Leadership Program This school year, Associate Activities Director Mr. Goetzinger, and Associate Principal and Activities Director Mr. Deam thought Jefferson High school was missing something when it came to Jefferson sports and activities.

To fix this they put together a Leadership program where participants from each activity meet.

One member, sophomore Zac Henderson, has been a part of the new program this year.

“These meetings will positively affect Jefferson by seeing who can actually stand out and be a leader when it’s needed most,” Henderson said. “Some people say they are a leader but when it matters they hide away. And these meetings are trying to get people to stop that and be more vocal and voice more opinions when it’s needed.”

Saying that leadership is important is one thing, finding ways to cultivate that leadership in students is another.

“We have only had one all we did was work on describing what we think leadership is,” Henderson said. “With all honesty, it’s a complex answer and there isn’t really a right answer.”

This program is supposed to be fun as well. “(My favorite part is) being there with friends,” Henderson said.

The program aims to help improve Jefferson High School’s activities all around “My first impression of the meeting was they seem to be helpful and had potential to be very useful,” Henderson said.

While the program is still very new, the hope is that participating students can take what they learn from their time in the group and apply those lessons to their interactions with their teammates and peers around the school.

Teacher Of The Issue Charlie Goetzinger Charlie Goetzinger has been a part of the Cedar Rapids schooling community for 10 years.

Throughout those years, he has built many relationships with students, expanded his teaching and made many impacts at Jefferson High School.

Mr.Goetzinger knew teaching was the right choice for him when he was just a teenager in high school.

“I became a teacher because of one that I had in high school,” Mr. Goetzinger said. “As I went through the class, I began to take notice of the way in which he taught. He was all about relationships, getting to know his students, being goofy, being stern when he needed.”

Goetzinger was a student who never found an interest in school because things came easily to him, but this teacher found a way to keep him interested and challenge his abilities.

“He took a kid who acted like a stereotypical jock and made him enjoy reading things like The Canterbury Tales, Beowulf, etc,” Goetzinger said who then went on to teach at Jefferson.

While making the decision to become a teacher came easy to him, he found he would like to try a new way of teaching, and decided to work at Iowa BIG in 2019.

“I loved that Iowa BIG was all about community,” Goetzinger said. “Getting people to connect, collaborate, communicate etc. I built some very deep relationships with community members, teachers, and students.”

He loved the community and found it exhilarating to see the students wanted to be at Iowa BIG. “At Iowa BIG, it’s rare to find a student who doesn’t want to be there,” Goetzinger said. He also appreciated that everyone went by their first name at Iowa BIG, and he continued to do so when coming back to Jefferson in 2020. Although, this year was very different comparedTransitioning to any other year him. fromfor Iowa BIG seemed great because he was coming back to his old routes, but this year was not the Jefferson he once knew.

“I have gotten to know foreheads better and eyes better than I ever could’ve imagined,” Goetzinger said. He explained how building a connection with students as he once could do so easily, is now tremendously harder.

It has also been difficult to motivate the students who often struggle as well. While this has been a challenge, he has found the school year to be as amazing as it once was even though he now is not only teaching math and science, but also serves as the Activities Facilitator and Program Coordinator for BlendEd Academy.

“I love the work; I still get to be connected to sports and the athletes, I get to teach and build connections with students, I get to collaborate with an exceptional group of teachers to

build a system that benefits all students,” Goetzinger said.

“I am back where my heart belongs: at Jefferson. So with that, what’s not to love?”

Mr. Goetzinger is thankful to be back at Jefferson and has noticed that from working with Iowa BIG he brought back more skills that have aided him in improving his teaching.

“I am most definitely a better teacher because of my time at Iowa BIG,” he said. He learned that Iowa BIG was always about building community within the students, teachers, Cedar Rapids and even the world. The question they asked themselves is, how can they get students connected and see what is happening outside the high school walls.

“My focus as a teacher at Iowa Big was to be a mentor to students who wanted something different in their education,” Goetzinger said. These differentials included a break from tests, quizzes, GPA, and a real-world project they could potentially put on their resume.

Mr. Goetzinger began to realize that everything he was doing at Iowa BIG was interconnected, where at public schools everything was being taught in a different class. He saw how this had been affecting numerous students and how a change needed to be made.

“When you get a job, rarely will you be asked for test scores, GPA, or class rank,” he said. “Instead what you will need are the universal constructs: collaboration, critical thinking, flexibility, adaptability, complex communication, creativity, positivity, and accountability.” He learned that schools should strive to teach these universal constructs and integrate those skills into the school.

Mr. Goetzinger is set on improving the future, but he has already made many accomplishments in his past.

“I think the biggest accomplishment during my teaching career is how I have worked collaboratively with amazing students and teachers to co-develop other models of education that work for students,” Goetzinger said. He has made many accomplishments through Iowa BIG and BlendEd Academy which have challenged students, teachers, and school leaders to consider how education can be performed differently.

“Even if they haven’t changed because of it, improvement can only happen when you challenge your assumptions,” he said.

This is what challenged him and his colleagues at Iowa BIG. They were consistently challenging what they believed.

Online Play Along with everyone else, Jefferson’s theater department has had to face a lot of changes this year. Different from sports, theater has not been able to have any in person performances or plays, so they decided to shift everything online.

We have tackled three online projects so far” Theater Director, Mr. Link said. “Our first was a series of monologues called "Shakespeare 2.020" by our very own Mr. Addler. These were characters sharing their problems to their webcam, and then Shakespearean characters replying with their advice using lines from their plays. Our second project is an online game for elementary students where they tour a virtual theater and click on pre-recorded videos of Jefferson students playing fairy tale characters as backstage workers. Our third and ongoing project, "The Show Must Go On....Line" is a monthly online trivia game with commercials that explain how to get involved in theater.”

“The Show Must Go On...Line” is what the department has been mainly focused on since it is something they put out every month. The game consists of goofy trivia questions that the audience can answer using their own devices.Every question the audience answers correctly, adds to the physical challenges the host must complete.

“In round one the audience nearly aced all the questions and Dan Kelley had to eat five oreos which may or may not have had their filling replaced with toothpaste or horseradish sauce” Link said.

Dan Kelley is a senior who has been involved in theater for all four years and has played many important roles in his time here at Jefferson.

“I’ve had a few recently, King Lear from “Shakespeare 2.020” which is being performed at this year’s State Thespian Festival, The Big Bad Wolf from our “Fairy Tale Theater” production, and then just recently was apart of a two-person online game show called “The Show Must Go On-Line” Kelley said.

After doing in person productions for the past years it is a big difference to switch and have to learn how to do everything differently for online productions.

“I’d say the biggest difference between in-person and online is the social atmosphere we have in the theater,” Kelley said. “Before theater was an easier community to slip into, because it was everyone from every side of the school just coming together to do one thing. Now, I just suppose it takes more effort to reach out and include people.”

“The biggest change is the ability to go back and change things,” Link said. “In a regular play the process is a bit like making and throwing a paper airplane for a contest. You do the process over and over, hoping to get it just right, but in the end you throw it and hope for the best. For online work there's always time to go back and re record or edit what you will eventually send out to the world.”

As there are many changes and differences to being in a play online rather than in person, there are also positives to take away from the experience.

“Often we will choose a challenging show for the season purely to get an opportunity to try new equipment, new tools, or new challenges. In my twenty one years at Jefferson nothing has offered me more opportunity for new skills than this pandemic,” Link said.

“Preparation for our productions nowadays has actually seemed like a step in the good direction,” Kelley said. “Rather than an online rehearsal with everyone at once, we’re typically meeting one-on-one with our directors, which gives us a much better chance to get notes on how we can improve our performance.”

Luckily the theater department was able to grow their numbers even during online productions.

“Thankfully we have added numerous new members with these new online projects, but as we graduate this year's seniors it becomes even more important to continue to add new faces,” Link said.

DIY Foods Vegan Broccoli Soup

Fruit Salad

Ingredients Dressing ❏ 1 Tablespoon lemon juice ❏ 1 Tablespoon lime juice ❏ 1 Teaspoon maple syrup, more of desired ❏ ½ Teaspoon grated ginger ❏ Pinch of sea salt Salad ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏

10 Strawberries sliced 2 peaches sliced ½ cup Bing cherries, pitted and slice ½ cup Blueberries ½ cup Raspberries ¼ cup fresh basil, more for garnish ¼ cup fresh mint, more for garnish

Serves 6-8 Instructions 1.

In a Medium bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, lime juice, maple syrup, ginger and salt 2.

In a large bowl, toss together the strawberries, peaches,cherries, blueberries, raspberries,basil, and mint 3.

Drizzle the dressing on top and toss and coat. Garnish with basil and mint 4.

Ingredients 2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 small yellow onion diced ½ cup chopped celery ⅓ cup chopped carrots 1 lb broccoli 1 small yukon gold potato diced 4 garlic cloves minced 4 cups vegetable broth 3 cups cubed bread ½ cup raw cashews 1 ½ teaspoons apple cider vinegar ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard ¼ cup fresh dill 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice ¾ teaspoon sea salt Ground black pepper

Serves: 4 Instructions 1.

Preheat oven to 350, line 2 small baking sheets with parchment paper 2.

Heat the oil in a large pot or Dutch oven on medium heat. Add the onion, celery, carrots, broccoli stems, salad and pepper. Saute until softened. Add potatoes, garlic and stir, add the broth and simmer for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft 3.

Set aside 1 cup of broccoli florets to roast for a topping. Place remaining florets in a steamer and set over a pot with 1-inch of water, bring the water to a simmer and cover and steam for 5 minutes until broccoli is tender 4.

Place reserved broccoli florets and the bread cubes on a baking sheet. Toss with olive oil and salt, roach until the bread is crispy and broccoli is tender and browned 5.

Transfer the soup the a blender and add the cashews and apple cider vinegar, mustard and blend until creamy. Add the steamed broccoli,dill and lemon juice and pulse until the broccoli is incorporated but still chunky, if it gets too thick add ½ cup of water 6.

Athlete of the Issue Olivia Proctor It was almost exactly a year ago that the call came in.

No school.

No spring sports.

No season for athletes who’d been training.

For JHS junior, Olivia Proctor, it meant no opportunity to see her ascent to the top spot on Jefferson’s girls’ varsity tennis team.

With the departure of six of Jeff’s seven top girls’ tennis players from the 2019 season, Proctor will be the only returning varsity player on the team. This will be her second season on varsity playing doubles and singles.

Olivia has grown up playing tennis, this will be her eighth year.

“I can’t wait to be back on the courts after our last season got cancelled,” Olivia said.

Tennis players in Cedar Rapids were challenged with the derecho destroying many of the tennis facilities around town.

That didn’t stop Olivia from practicing and getting better.

“I’ve been driving down to Iowa City to play at the Hawkeye Rec Center,” Olivia said. “I’ve been doing some workouts at home too.”

Olivia has been putting in a lot of work in improving her baseline shots and creating a lot of topspin.

Being the only returning varsity player Olivia has assumed the leadership role for the team.

“I think we can all be more aggressive on the court and more confident in our actions,” Olivia said.

To have a decent doubles team in tennis the two players have to have good chemistry. Olivia is able to play with almost anyone and still have great results. She adapts well to the other players and works well with all of her possible partners. Going into this season she will have a fresh start since she hasn’t played with anyone on the team prior to this year.

Olivia aspires to be able to continue playing tennis after high school.

State Wrestling Preston Bruck Though it has been a challenging year for wrestling due to the Covid-19 pandemic the team still managed to find their way to Wells Fargo arena. Preston Bruck, a JHS senior, was Jefferson only student to make it to the Iowa high school state wrestling tournament this year. He lost both of his match which, sadly, means he did not place.

“The number of people allowed was a lot fewer than last year” Bruck stated, “so there was a lot less pressure which allowed me to focus more my wrestling”.

To keep safe the Wells Fargo arena limited the amount of people allowed in for the state tournament and also made groups socially distance while in their seats. Covid-19 wasn't the only obstacle for Preston this year, as a new head wrestling coach Robert Martin was introduced to the team.

“This change in coaching was a little odd at first” said Bruck, “but in the end it really helped me achieve my goals”. Even and very much valued”. though these challenges Preston still managed to keep a positive attitude and work to get to the state tournament.

“I mentally and physically prepared myself” said Preston, “for state by focusing on the little things at my practices and reading my Bible to stay rooted in my faith”. Though he did not place the experience of being able to expertise this one last time was valued.

“I'm not sure if this will be the end for my wrestling career” said Bruck, “but the experience I got this year was meaningful

2021 Spring Sports Preview Boys’ Tennis The boys’ tennis team is led by Coach Tim Preston and perennial all conference player, senior Kyle Lassen.

The boys’ team enters the season with a lot of unknown players, Lassen is the team's only returning player from two years ago.

“I’m really excited about our newcomers and there aren't many players better than Kyle in our conference,” Coach Preston said when asked about the upcoming season.

Boys’ Track & Field The boys’ track and field team is led by Coach Bueisng and a number of other assistant coaches.

Unlike many of the other spring sports the boys’ track and field team did get a few indoor meets in last season.

They return some key runners in Prosper Kapongo, Lukas Lamparek and Gavin Hall.

The team had their season opener at the A.D Dickinson Relays at the UNI Dome.

Girls’ Tennis Like many of the other spring sports the Girls’ tennis team enters the season with many questions.

The girls’ team is under a new head coach, Chad Garber, a familiar face for many at JHS. With not many returners from two years ago the varsity team will look a lot different.

“Almost all of our varsity team graduated and it left a lot of promising players,” junior varsity letterwinner Olivia Proctor said.

Girls’ Track and Field Jefferson’s track and field team has been very successful in the past and seniors like Paige Wiebke hope to make this season one to remember.

“Hopefully success means some of us (or all!) making it to state in each event or as a team,” Paige said of how she hopes the team will succeed this year.

Missing their season last year there are a lot of new runners in the lineup.

Girls’ Soccer

Boy’s Soccer The boys’ soccer team led by coach John O'connor and coach Tom Jackson have had strong success recently.

Knowing that, sophomore Abram Johnson hopes to offer himself to the team.

“I think everyone is looking to the veteran players to really lead the team and get us on track for the year,” Abram said. With the soccer team returning a big lineup this year, Abram hopes they will lead their team to success.

The girls soccer team is going into the season with many questions.

With all spring sports having no season last year many of the players missed out on another year of experience.

“I always hope for more wins than losses but we may have to rebuild from many people leaving,” returning varsity player Jada Platt said.

Girls’ Golf With the team returning Kiera Thomas and Anna Warkel and new head coach BJ Mcgrew, coach BJ has big hopes for the girls this season.

“I hope to compete in every meet we participate in this year” coach BJ said when asked about the outlook for the season.

He hopes to grow numbers of participants they have and build for future years to come.
